So hopefully they’ll do something about this because it’s getting really really old

#

We were all sitting down for dinner when they were doing it

#

Or most of us, some were standing in the kitchen putting some food away

delicate stream
#

I had a run-in with some people that made me wonder "why" with some girls on the street the other day... I was walking, listening to a story podcast, this group of girls walking towards me [teenagers, young?] and the one girl goes "HEY" and I say hi back [a lot of people say hi despite my having headphones on, usually I say hi and that's that] but then she started asking questions. I pull off my headphones, and she says "do you watch anime?" and the other girl goes "do you play games?" and they both keep repeating questions, and I try to answer but am careful with the timing. Well... one of the questions they asked was "do you eat bodily productions? are you a piece of same thing?" and just got more vulgar from there, at which point I walked away, and was like... why, I don't know you, I did nothing to you

#

Some people are just horrible and disgusting for no apparent reason

#

Unrelated I'm melting

#

I wish I could compute without space heater times

The weather over here has been more over on the cold side even though we are in the middle of July

#

At least we don't have to turn on the A.C. as much which means 📉 energy bills

delicate stream
#

It was only 86 here today

terse estuary
#

June was miserable in the midwest but it's normal now

Electric bill is only like $400 a month

@tardy badger how dare you. like. live in your apartment

scenic oak

speaking of dinner I should eat

scenic oak

for apartment dwellers. I live in a house so am allowed to eat. 😛

delicate stream
#

Ah

#

I too live in a house

#

My house has lasers

honest jolt
#

Poor skerr not being able to eat

scenic oak
#

I'm sure my house has at least one laser somewhere

#

(do those garage door safety things use lasers?)

Impossible is gonna make nugs 👀

#

i was jealous but i remembered i have a CD drive with lasers in it 😎

honest jolt
delicate stream
honest jolt
#

Although the front cover was a pitab to remove

terse estuary
#

I remember reading instructables about people converting CD drive parts into small engravers

#

Sounds like a tempting project although I think those lasers are UV so that's a bit scary

delicate stream
#

I have a pile of CD drive parts that was going to be a 3D printer

honest jolt
#

I was thinking of maybe something like a cnc plotter maybe...but I have a gazillion projects already so XD

delicate stream
#

I do want to make a laser engraver still... probably what I'll do with the CD parts since I have big 3D printers, lol

honest jolt
#

:o you habe 3d printer? Gib

delicate stream
#

I have 4

#

lol

honest jolt
#

Or just share

#

Nvm give XD

delicate stream

Nah XD need them all

honest jolt
#

Nooooooo

delicate stream
#

Also one is still in need of repair and calibration

#

But I'll print things for you, lol

honest jolt
#

Naw that would be too much
Plus, I have a library nearby which is like a 5 min drive which actually has a 3d printer :D

delicate stream
#

lol

honest jolt
#

But I still need to learn how to use the stinking software >.<

delicate stream
#

Practice makes perfect!

honest jolt
#

(By learn I haven't even downloaded any software yet XD)

terse estuary
#

Which part of software? Modeling or the slicer software?

delicate stream
#

lol

honest jolt
#

👀 wait there are 2 parts to it

#

I feel dumb here XD

delicate stream
#

Basically. First, you need a model, which either you can design yourself or download

#

Then, when you have a model, you need to slice it with a slicer, which is basically making the instructions for the printer

#

Thingiverse is great for downloading free models :D

scenic oak
#

I'd imagine the library provides the slicer and known-to-work settings though

delicate stream
#

Yeah, I'd hope the library with the printers has some info for you

scenic oak
#

or you just give the library a STL?

honest jolt
#

(If ya have any recommendations for an easy one that takes up less then 4gb of space (why does Microsoft c++ build tools take up 6gb and I only use it for one python library >.>) please tell me lol)

And/or someone who knows how it works to teach you

#

I was really excited about this design

scenic oak
#

I am waiting for my OSHpark boards and my attiny202s to show up (August 🙁 )

#

so I can make and test a thing

delicate stream
#

Random question... Is it weird that I can rip soda cans apart with my bare hands?

scenic oak
#

eh, not really? that you want to and aren't concerned about slicing yourself? a bit?

delicate stream
#

I've never sliced myself doing it before XD

scenic oak
#

but yeah once you've got it started aluminum cans are really weak

delicate stream
#

Yeah

scenic oak
#

but yes. the remaining parts and the stencil are taunting meeee 😦

delicate stream

:O

#

I uh... I have a potato

scenic oak

( and the PICkit 4 I acquired as I needed a UPDI programmer capable of the 12v pulse )

delicate stream

I have injured myself unrelated to cans

#

Wait, this isn't a potato

scenic oak
#

but yes I just wanna make things. not wait for parts so I can make things

delicate stream
#

I know that feel

#

What're you gonna make when you have all the bits?

scenic oak
#

designed up a (smallish) I2C Controlled Mosfet board based on discussion in another channel here

delicate stream
#

Nice :D is it for a specific project, or something to share with the world?

scenic oak
#

shaaaare

delicate stream
#

Share ALL the things!

scenic oak
#

(and/or to sell >_> but also am going to open-source the design+firmware)

delicate stream
#

Nothing wrong with selling! I'm working on a project to try to sell too, and plan to open source too

scenic oak
#

selling things means I can make more things

delicate stream
#

Exactly :D

scenic oak
#

( assuming people buy them )

delicate stream
#

I mean, Adafruit sells and open sources their things, so it's proof that you can do both

scenic oak
#

yep

#

so much easier to exchange currency for one of the things

#

than it is to buy all the parts to make one of the things

delicate stream
#

Yeah, I think the majority of people who want a thing will buy the thing, and the people who grab onto the board designs are going to tweak it for one reason or another

scenic oak
#

I mean I totally grabbed the Adafruit NeoKey 1x4 design files a few weeks back to just delete everything from the board and add 4 sqares to the cutout layer >_>

delicate stream
#

lol

scenic oak
#

wanted a mechanical plaaaate

delicate stream

delicate stream

Heh

#

I need a 3D printed version

scenic oak
#

lemme see if I can get KiCad to spit out a svg

delicate stream
#

:D

#

Wait, isn't SVG an image file?

#

2D?

scenic oak
#

you should be able to import to your 3D design software of choice and extrude

delicate stream
#

Ah, yeah, sleepy brain didn't think of that XD

delicate stream
#

Yay!

scenic oak
#

I believe you want ~ 1.41mm thickness

#

the boards I had made are 1.6mm and work just fine

delicate stream
#

Lessee, can I remember my TinkerCAD login...

#

yissss

scenic oak
#

I'm tempted to try a 3D printed version now and see how well it works

delicate stream
#

Mmmk, TinkerCAD no liek

#

Also that's 1% scale because it wanted to do 10000x37873mm

scenic oak
#

oooops

#

I think it might have been exported in inches

delicate stream
#

lol

scenic oak
#

but those numbers don't make sense for that

delicate stream
#

Sorry, 10000x35730. Still very very very big

scenic oak
#

... okay what is tinkercad doing

#

I see where it is getting those two numbers from

#

but also the svg file says width="9.075420cm" height="2.540000cm"

#

I'll have to fight with that later

delicate stream
#

It do a dumb sometimes... but I really wanna know why it just has 4 cylinders, lol

#

I need to sleep, guessing you do too?\

scenic oak
#

allegedly

delicate stream
#

lol

scenic oak
#

it is completely ignoring the board outline

delicate stream
#

lol

scenic oak
#

and is instead turning the mounting hole spots into cylinders instead

delicate stream
#

Silly TinkerCAD

scenic oak
#

I can't even get Fusion 360 to import the file

delicate stream
#

Hmm

#

Bad export?

scenic oak
#

it looks right in inkscape? 🤷‍♀️

#

I wonder if it doesn't think the outside path is closed

delicate stream
#

Computers are weird

scenic oak
#

oh discord does do file uploads

#

lemme know if that works?

#

you may need to tweak the thickness?

delicate stream
#

Downloaded

#

Wait, what's that format?

scenic oak
#

tinkercad should be able to handle it?

delicate stream
#

Doesn't show in file picker

scenic oak
#

... rude of it

delicate stream
#

Went to "All file types" it says no, yucky

scenic oak
#

that's supposed to be a file for exchanging a 3D model, but allowing editing later instead of just being the triangles like a SVG STL

delicate stream
#

hmm

scenic oak
#

IDK if that's the right thickness but

delicate stream
#

It imports, so that's a start XD I can adjust if I need to

#

1.6mm, that should be good, right?

scenic oak
#

that's what my physical boards are

delicate stream
#

It's only a couple grams of material, so no biggie if it's too thick, lol

#

I have like 20KG of filament XD

#

Well, I need to sleep... Thanks :3

scenic oak
#

lemme know if that works!

delicate stream
#

Sure thing!

scenic oak
#

I mean I'm also printing my own but

#

Night night!

tardy badger
#

yay i have a com port for my board! so far so good!

scenic oak
#

\o

tardy badger
#

only issue is I had to make a small cut because somehow i didn't realize the 5V and GND pins of the LDO touched and shorted o_o

scenic oak
#

OOPS

#

I am half expecting a very silly error on my prototype PCBs as soon as they show up

tardy badger
#

but i can write to the chip so i consider this a success. I fixed the issue in the board file. now just to check if I can make these neopixel glow 😄

scenic oak
#

I def. found one mistake (which I can fix by somehow soldering a chip on upside down) + a few things I could do better after submitting my board files 😦

#

because that's the curse

tardy badger
#

it's not perfect but this is honestly one of the best outcomes on my first try for something like this

scenic oak
#

\o

tardy badger
#

all the neopixels were working, i just forgot to change something in my code to use them all. whoops!

scenic oak
#

firmware changes are always better than board changes

tardy badger
#

i have a small change to make board wise but so far it's just one thing

delicate stream
#

This is fine

delicate stream
#

Friendly reminder to check your printer profile before you save your gcode. Your Mini Select will not be happy when you use the MP10 profile.

#

The Mini Select does not know that it can't go as far as the MP10 because it doesn't have sensors on that end....

slim shard
#

a "good firmware" can count the distance from the start sensor and choose not to run past a sane point, but yeah

delicate stream

This is a 4 year old $180 printer, they didn't put THAT much effort in, lol

dusty citrus
#

I had muscle issues for a few days with Pfizer - very mild.

#

No 'flu symptoms' at all though.

median viper
#

I don’t want to say I have jitters because I don’t but I would have to say I think the first shot was worse

#

But I waited like 2 months between them

dusty citrus
#

A good friend who also got the 2nd dose kept saying just you wait for about three days after.

#

Three days came and went, then five, then seven: no ill effects.

#

So it can vary.

I'm getting my second Pfizer shot in... 6 days?

dusty citrus

I am a firm believer in public health measures including all vaccine programmes. ;)

tardy badger
late fulcrum
#

Pretty much a non-event. A little soreness (like a bruise) for a couple of days, that was about it.

tardy badger
#

I’ve considered it as my body doesn’t like getting a lot of shots in short periods of time (thank the military for that)

#

I learned you can develop vaccine sensitivity if you get a lot of vaccines over short periods of time like they do when you join the military

#

Basically your body throws a big temper tantrum which isn’t fun

late fulcrum
#

It is recommended to wait at least two weeks before and after a vaccination during which you do not get additional vaccinations.

tardy badger
#

Yeah, the first shot I got after finishing military training felt like I was going to die

static flare
#

I had to wait 2 weeks after my flu shot to get my first shot of Pfizer

tardy badger
#

Hives, I felt like i was boiling in my own skin, my eyes felt like they were just cooking and I couldn’t keep them open

#

Worst experience of my life

#

And after all that, I’m still all for vaccines because they save lives

dusty citrus
#

In Denver, I got my inprocessing shots in tech school in the USAF. Mile high city: not a good combination (altitude).

#

I went for a run around the track (I did such things back then). Error.

delicate stream
#

I had a sore arm like a flu shot for my first Pfizer dose, except my arm didn't get hot like the flu shot. The second one I felt like death for a couple days, bad migraine, dropped body temp, lost my lunch a few times... But then I was perfectly fine. May have been food related, but no way to know

#

Peace of mind is worth the bit of suffering

delicate stream
umbral phoenix
#

not to mention the societal benefits of not infecting others

tardy badger
#

Yeah, if anything people should realize that vaccines are not cures just road blocks for transmission. And that’s important to understand.

#

Well, and helpful for reducing or eliminating symptoms as well. But mostly slowing or stopping transmission.

My frankenDesktop PC never likes to keep the boot order I tell it to follow. It never wants to boot to the primary HDD that has the only bootable sector on it. The other HD's are for extra storage. It even tries booting to USB HD's or flashdrives that I left plugged in. I have repeatedly gone into the UEFI to check boot order and it never has the primary HDD as primary when other "storage" options are plugged in.

So, my question is, is it possible to build a 1 minute delay for the extra HD's using an Arduino nano as a timed data connect (automatic switch) to prevent my frankenputer from continuing this issue.

terse estuary

delicate stream

Yeah, rainwater collection laws are a thing, typically in places with less rain overall -- the idea being that if people collect rainwater, they may just horde it, and then other places might have even less since that's taken from runoff

IMO

median viper

They need to really loosen these rainwater legislation

look at teh restrictions

#

looks like the laws are changing though since I lived there

These summaries are a bit too short to make any real conclusion on, were you specifically talking about Cali's laws?

median viper

Cali and NC specifically

delicate stream
#

I need to fix my water processing

wary herald
#

"Colorado -

According to House Bill 16-1005, residents are allowed to collect rainwater in two rain barrels with a combined capacity of 110 gallons. The collected water can only be used on the property where it was collected and for outdoor purposes."

What is this!!

median viper
#

yeah see what I mean!

terse estuary
#

In more detail:

#

Section 1 of the act allows the collection of precipitation from a residential rooftop if:

A maximum of 2 rain barrels with a combined storage capacity of 110 gallons or less are used;
Precipitation is collected from the rooftop of a building that is used primarily as a single-family residence or a multi-family residence with 4 or fewer units;
The collected precipitation is used on the residential property on which the precipitation is collected; and
The collected precipitation is applied to outdoor purposes such as lawn irrigation and gardening.

#

All depends on where

median viper
#

There is restrictions on tap water, if you use more than 50 gallons a month in California they fine you. But the big farmers use more than any city and pay nothing

delicate stream
#

Bottled water all the time would be too expensive and has too much waste for my taste -- I would do filtered

delicate stream

Sometimes I think about sending a bowl of mashed potatoes into low earth orbit and exploding them

scenic oak
#

I'm pretty sure that's against a few treaties

delicate stream
#

I signed no such treaty

#

I only signed one saying I wouldn't weaponize mashed potatoes

terse estuary
#

I think that would still be legal, iirc the only illegal weapons in space are WMDs

#

To the best of my knowledge exploding potatoes don't meet that definition 😉

late fulcrum
#

Now I'm trying to figure out if mashed potatoes would explode by themselves in a vacuum. Hmm, there's a youtuber for that sort of thing.

delicate stream
late fulcrum
#

If you know, I'm all ears

#

I suspect it depends somewhat on the temperature of the mashed potatoes

delicate stream
#

It mostly depends on if you're allowing explosive decompression, or sending it up slowly without any atmospheric sealing. Explosive decompression, it would spoof out, the liquid would basically rip it to a powder as it vaporizes, and you'd have potato powder [probably a finer consistency than instant mashed potatoes]. If you're sending it up the slow way, eventually the water would start to boil off, and depending on the rate of ascension it might puff and poof a bit, but eventually you'd have a pile of desiccated potato powder.

late fulcrum
#

Both of those would be interesting to watch. Maybe I should suggest it to the Action Lab.

late fulcrum

I'm only good at ordinary tumbler locks, pushbutton, and wheel locks

delicate stream

Lockpicking is fun :D

#

But security and surveillance control is my specialty

late fulcrum
#

I had a really snooty security officer at one job, I kind of enjoyed pointing out dumb mistakes. And yes, lockpicking is fun. I went to a local storage unit place and asked them if they had a bucket of cut-off locks somewhere, sure enough they did and I bought it. Sure, about 2/3 was Master locks, but the others were more interesting.

terse estuary
#

I got that adafruit lockpicking set, and it never occurred to me to go to a storage place to get practice locks

#

That's a good idea

delicate stream
#

Ohhh, I didn't think about that

#

I'll have to ask next time I go to my unit, although they only use barrel locks, so they don't do cutoffs as far as I know

late fulcrum
#

Note: they'll ask you what you want the locks for.

static flare
#

i assume they'd probably be cool with selling locks they can never use again to you

delicate stream
#

"you... You want 300 useless locks? And you'll give me $25? I mean, sure, why not"

late fulcrum
#

Normally they just sell the locks as scrap metal: if you can beat that price (which isn't hard), it's worth their while, if you can give them a reasonable reason you want useless locks. In my case, I briefly explained locksport and that I was teaching some people and wanted practice locks.

delicate stream

scenic oak

I'm pretty sure you could sneeze on a master lock and open it

delicate stream
#

I have done this... sortof

#

One time I put one of my practice locks on a post, and was picking it, and I sneezed, and yanked hard enough after getting close enough that I sheared a pin and it opened XD

late fulcrum
#

I tried some of the stuff I'd seen online, like picking Master locks with pull tabs, zip ties, paper clips, etc. Not only did I manage it, it wasn't even hard, even with wildly suboptimal tools.

#

And I'm not that good a picker.

delicate stream
#

Master is scary bad

#

But all locks are worthless and it's all theater of the mind

late fulcrum
#

Weirdly, they have some lines with good cores. Their cheap plastic lockout locks have decent cores in them.

delicate stream
#

Do you watch LockPickingLawyer?

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, I watch LPL, BosnianBill, etc. Those guys are really enjoyable.

delicate stream
#

Yeah, their LOTO locks having better cores than some of the "real" locks is hilarious

#

LPL is legend, and he got me back into picking... I had learned like 15 years ago, but rarely picked

#

Now I try to pick at least once a week

late fulcrum
#

I bought one of those clear plastic locks to get back into practice, but that thing was so ridiculously easy that I stopped playing with it after a few minutes.

I remember when they had the rockets in front of AFTAC before 9/11

#

And they had A1A routed weird as a security protocol after 9/11

#

Good times

#

Anyway, gotta get some sleep. I’ve got an early meeting in the morning

late fulcrum
#

Me too. I'm presenting, too.

delicate stream
#

I wish I could have seen a shuttle launch... We were in Florida during scheduled launches a few times, but they always got postponed

jovial path
#

Very pretty, I showed a space shuttle launch on YouTube a few months ago to my 4 years old sister.

#

I told her it is like if a very big building flied to the sky. I have a video on my Google Photos of a space shuttle launch my smartphone uploaded in 2014, I never found a better space shuttle launch video.

Finding a new PC case is... annoyingly difficult

delicate stream
#

Finding a new PC case you want is difficult

#

There's a quintillion options... but finding the right option is hard

thick wind
#

I hear table PCs are the next big thing

delicate stream
#

I kinda want a desk PC case

thick wind
#

I kinda wish I could build my own...

delicate stream
#

You can!

#

Wood is the easiest thing

thick wind
#

Well, sure, if I had time and money to spare.

#

Maybe when I sign up for my local makerspace next year, but probably not until then.

delicate stream
#

Time and money are the wooorrrrssssttt

#

Modding might be a better start for your first time, but that REQUIRES power tools

#

Not sure if you know your way around a cutting wheel

#

You can probably get a cheap case on eBay to give you a frame... can cut it up and expand on it

thick wind
#

I have some experience with those types of saws, but it's been years since I did woodworking of any kind haha

#

It would be nice to get a thick table with a missing drawer or something and refurbish it into a desk PC.

delicate stream
#

I want a glass top one, but glass scares me

static flare
#

i want something people don't seem to offer nowadays

#

drive bays

thick wind
#

Like, 3.5" HDD bays, or like the really old drive bays that could hold floppy/CD-ROM drives?

static flare
#

both of them!

#

i want to add a floppy drive and a Bluray drive, plus space for my internal stuff

delicate stream
#

-- case manufacturer

static flare
#

I DO

delicate stream
#

I hate to tell you... But you're an edge case

#

The lack of bays is why I still have many vintage cases

ancient kindle
#

I love 3.5” bays

#

My define 7 has a max of like 14

drowsy zephyr
#

Yo guys, another question, for your master's degree thesis, do u have to do it by your own or can we follow someone's project

thick wind
delicate stream
#

Just the gawdy old ones with plexiglass and chonk design...

delicate stream
thick wind
#

And the requirements do vary from school to school, so consulting with your advisor is your best bet.

static flare
#

:( I don't want to be an edge case

delicate stream
#

Then you gotta give up the floppy

thick wind
#

They do have USB floppy drives nowadays?

static flare
#

There are but i want a built in one

delicate stream
#

She gotta be retro like dat

thick wind
#

I mean, most of Newegg's ATX full towers have drive bays still. You might not be able to get them in full RGB, but there should be plenty of options if you're willing to accept a larger case.

delicate stream
#

And old styles

thick wind
#

Older. Tempered glass with drive bays is a rarity, I admit.

delicate stream
#

The only time I've seen ANY drive bays with tempered glass that I can recall is the Tower 900, which is big and expensive

#

And that's just one 5.25" bay

late fulcrum
#

You should be able to get tempered glass pieces of specified dimensions at a glass shop.

I want to get more retro stuff

delicate stream
#

I have mixed tastes

#

I like retro, but also like my rainbow vomit

#

For retro rainbow vomit, I want to get an acrylic case... but I dunno how easy it is to get your hands on them these days. Probs have to make my own

#

Not brave enough to make an all tempered glass case, lol

static flare
#

I mean, I love modern stuff, don't get me wrong, but there's just an allure to old stuff too

delicate stream
#

Mmmm

#

I want to get a VT220 terminal and hook it up to a Pi

One "maybe eventually" project is making a text-based GUI of sorts for a terminal to control 3D prints

General whining. 😥 At 2 PM I received an email that over 800 macro pads were available. I hustled my fingers over to eight or fruit to find them out of stock. Come on people, couldn’t you have left me just one? Now don’t you feel ashamed and sorry for me, an old old man? 👨🏼‍🦳🤣😂🤣

static flare

I'd love to just... have a place where I can ship things to in the US and then when it gets to a certain point economically, I can have it shipped to me in Australia

round obsidian

Even including employee cost I sometimes think they make a killing on shipping prices. But if you want it you got a pay it.
