I wrote some real time radar processing software for the Cell/BBE chip. They ended up strapping a "cheap" Furuno radar to a Jeep and duct taping a PS3 to the passenger seat for real world testing. It worked.

Or Cities Skylines rendering the individual teeth of everyone in the city.

late fulcrum
#

That $20k Furuno radar (plus the PS3 and software) outperformed Raytheon's $20M radar. Raytheon was Not Pleased to lose that contract.

"my x86 box is better than your x86 box!"

tranquil swallow
#

i recently had that thought over the current state of consoles, they really don't offer much value now

late fulcrum
#

The weird thing is that the $20k radar produced a better pulse shape, which gave the software something to chew on. The Raytheon radar was fully transistorized, but the vacuum tube Furuno outperformed it due to the improved pulse.

#

A friend gave me a PS5 because it overheated. Taking it apart, I could see they tried to push it too far and make it up with a liquid coupled heatsink. Didn't work.

glad ruin
#

x86 is just sad at this point. We've pushed it basically as far as it will go in terms of IPC. At this point future performance improvements will have to rely on either (a) compatibility-breaking architecutural changes, or (b) manufacturing improvements. The former is mostly pointless because x86 is an antiquated architecture. The latter is living on borrowed time.

its been "replaced" several times, but none have gained a foothold. except arm coming form the bottom now.

maybe desktop machines will be what goes away

late fulcrum
#

It turns out MICROS~1 doesn't care about it any more (they're making all their money from cloud these days), so they're quietly replacing the underpinning of windoze with Linux.

tranquil swallow

The upshot is that in a little while, "windows only" games will no longer exist, they'll run on Linux too.

tardy badger
#

I saw a post on a local information fb page about how their phone call got rerouted to a scammer call center.

#

Kind of an interesting situation. I suspect three possible situations:

  1. They have malware on their phone that is running some call forwarding type scheme in it.
  2. They are using a 3rd party calling service and their account is compromised in some way.
  3. They received a fake statement from the scammers for the company they thought they were calling and just fell for a phishing type email/mail scam.
late fulcrum
#
  1. Scammers biased Google results to give an incorrect number for a company (this one is known to happen)
tardy badger
burnt tendon
#

I know I've mistyped a number at least one by exactly one digit and gotten a phone-number-squatter.

#

Phone numbers suck.

late fulcrum
#

Back in the day, AT&T bought 1-800-OPERATOR, thinking that an easy to remember number would have people use them over their competitors. MCI immediately bought variant spellings like OPERATER, OPERETOR, OPARETOR, etc. and cleaned up. AT&T ended up quickly retrenching, replacing the campaign with 1-800-CALL-ATT in the hope that people could remember/spell that better.

burnt tendon
#

I really should bike over to the respective headquarters for Apple and Google and kidnap a few software engineers out of the actual-phone-portion-of-things teams and poke them with sharp sticks until they agree to get rid of all of the UI whackyness that prevents me from copying a phone number from HERE and pasting it to THERE under all circumstances.

I am not messaging some rando person my babka recipe for Easter. Sure it's just the one on the King Arthur Flour website, I don't share it with telephone SMS randos.

i used to watch on YouTube every weds a while back then stopped for some reason, it turned into years before I knew it. good to see you guys are still hosting your shows. I am trying to get used to discord. I am 61 and I find it uncomfortable and anxiety-producing.

rapid geode

its ok, noone is judging you

tranquil swallow
#

i'm not a fan of discord but everyone uses it, so it is what it is

rapid geode
#

i miss forums

ebon dew
#

what would you rather use? IRC?

rapid geode
tranquil swallow
#

I was using IRC prior to discord tbh

rapid geode
#

actually, irc was ok

tranquil swallow
#

but I recognize IRC is quite dated for what people want now, so I'd be ok with some decentralized fediverse type platform, or telegram

tardy badger
#

IRC was good fun if you knew how to make chatbots

rapid geode
#

discord is just irc with your data monetised

tardy badger
#

Yeah

ebon dew
#

we could go back to BBS's.

tardy badger
#

I ran an IRC server network at one point

#

Though I mostly was on Geekshed

rapid geode
#

i never did anything online til about the late 90s. so i missed all the weird stuff haha

ebon dew
#

if you liked IRC bots well you're in luck because there are tons of them for discord too. there is a case to be made that discord is just a modern version of IRC.

rapid geode
#

i am a bot. beep boop

tardy badger
#

IRC was big in the late 2000s and early 2010s

rapid geode
#

i used irc for work

tardy badger
#

I used it for gaming

ebon dew
#

so was limewire and napster. some things don't always work out.

rapid geode
#

haha

tranquil swallow
#

I think Twitch still uses IRC as the backend for their chat

#

I know they used it at one point

tardy badger
#

I think Twitch uses something closer to discord at this point

ebon dew
#

i knew there was something out there but couldn't remember which one it was. think you're right.

rapid geode
#

what ever happened to myspace

#

:x

#

hehe

ebon dew
#

all the IRC bots got ported to Twitch bots.

rapid geode
#

my friend wrote a chat bot "girl" and it was amazing how many people tried to hit on it in private messages

tardy badger
#

Not surprised given people have crushes on e-girls

#

Or the streamers who use avatars

rapid geode
#

so weird. like, surely they know its not a real person. all it could say was "hi"

tardy badger
#

It’s pretty cool how good avatars have become for real time streaming

rapid geode
#

and little else

#

like 8 canned responses

#

avatars? like a 3d character in real time?

tranquil swallow
#

yea

tardy badger
#

I watched a video of someone doing all the animation for streaming avatars and it is.. intense (2D/3D animated personas)

rapid geode
#

i dont pay any attention to streaming

tranquil swallow
#

at this point you have enough technology to automate the streamer entirely

rapid geode
#

fake streamers

ebon dew
#

i've seen some of the animated avatars, yeah some of the face and body tracking is kind of amazing. there's also one that applies makeup so the streamer doesn't have to worry about putting on makeup. there were a couple people caught out for being guys with female ai generated faces. it was mind blowing to see how realistic some of these camera apps are.

tardy badger
#

Oh yeah, it’s pretty good

rapid geode
#

so these are realistic avatars, not just cartoon characters?

tranquil swallow
#

the animated avatars are very stylistic and cartoonish, but there is an economy built around them

rapid geode

ah

tardy badger

rapid geode
ebon dew

heatsinks are very important. i purchased a little wifi camera recently that gets so hot it will melt the abs case and start a fire.

rapid geode

yeah. heat can be surprising

tardy badger

ebon dew

tardy badger

ebon dew

Got some tiny heatsinks and now it doesn't get above 99F.

rapid geode

but it will deform

ebon dew
#

oh there are images people have posted where the entire case looked like someone took a blowtorch to it.

rapid geode
#

now im curious ha

#

ah, next to the hospital. makes sense (3km away)

tardy badger
#

My local library is pretty small

#

Only open like 6hrs a day

rapid geode
#

ah yeah. that im not sure. libraries have faded from being a necessary service

tardy badger
#

The other library close to me is fairly large, open like 12hrs a day

ebon dew
#

libraries next to hospitals is a great idea. both are generally places where quiet is appreciated.

rapid geode
#

the toronto reference library is cool though. cause you can look at original books frokm 200 years ago

#

when you need the real "source"

tardy badger
#

Libraries play a pretty big role in areas with lots of families. Utah just happens to be known for large families.

tardy badger

There are three soda shops less than a mile from me

rapid geode

i can see that. gotta drink something if not coffee or alcohol

ebon dew

sugar and caffeine have always been popular items since like the day humans discovered them.

tardy badger
#

Utah has more soda shops per capita than anywhere in the US 😅

#

Dirty sodas were invented here too

rapid geode
#

i vaguely remember a soda shop" here in the 80s

tardy badger

A dirty soda is a soda with things like flavorings, creamer, whipped cream, etc.. mixed in

rapid geode

whats a dirty soda?

#

ooh

#

a lazy cream soda

ebon dew

and for a short time so was Coca-Cola, the real Coca. something most of us have never had the privilege of trying. this is why we can't have nice things.

ginger ale is really big here though

tardy badger
#

It didn’t taste bad, but it was very bizarre

rapid geode

they have gingerale in hospitals

#

haha

#

i wonder if thats just here.

#

we use is to settle stomaches

#

like if youve had some surgury and cant eat much. you can have that

tardy badger
#

In the southern US, ginger ale is as common as chicken noodle soup for being sick

rapid geode
#

hopita sandwiches are pretty bad too. bread and ham. and nothing else. no butte,r no mayo, no cheese.. ha

tardy badger
#

I went to an HBCU (historically black college or university) and they (the students) were joking at the start of COVID that the school administrators were gonna give us ginger ale if we got sick so we could go to class

rapid geode
#

i ate like 10 hospital sandwiches in a few hours after being sick. (long story, functionally i hadnt eaten for weeks)

then they "fixed" me and i was so hungry they just brought me these sandwiches and i ate all of them from the ER. none left

i miss all the crush flavours too.

grape, lime

tardy badger

We had watermelon crush here

It was pretty good

rapid geode
#

i dont drink pop much anymore. mostly tropicana lemonades etc.

pineapple mango mmm

tardy badger
#

I have a little soda stream thing

#

I don’t buy much soda these days

rapid geode
#

unfortunately because i know what pop actually costs i would never buy one of those haha.

tardy badger
#

It’s the convenience

#

Not having to go out to the store

#

Plus I end up not wanting it as much which is surprising to me

rapid geode
#

i would get a real soda machine instead if i wanted pop. mount it to the coutner. rooth beer on tap for 5 cents a litre

i remember at the theatre the cups cost more than the pop

tardy badger

I love root beer

Outside of open/simplecv or related, I have no way to check the windows of a browser?
Current issue: we use chrome to display stuff in a commercial area. Sometimes randomly, chrome opens two windows, one with the correct thing, and on top of it, a white chrome page, that covers the thing.
This happens with every chrome based browser and even firefox. I can't find what's up with it.
I thought at first to check with python how many windows are open, but the number of processes =! Number of opened windows

this might be a network problem

glad ruin

Oh I see. So I can have one SPI device, but there's some flexibility to where I plug in. Then in my firmware (say MicroPython), when I utilize their SPI code, that initializes SPI on those pins. Is that vaguely correct?

#

#

When an SPI Host is set to 80 MHz or lower frequencies, routing SPI pins via the GPIO matrix will behave the same compared to routing them via IOMUX.

honest trail
#

so just use any old unused GPIO and it's all good (especially to drive an OLED)

#

i really appreciate you helping me out, thanks

thorny sandal
#

@stuck moth

#

Question.

ebon dew
# honest trail Oh I see. So I can have one SPI device, but there's some flexibility to where I ...

Some boards have multiple SPI buses. Multiple SPI pins listed could be either separate SPI buses or 1 bus with different available pins as Herr Brain said. You have to figure out which. That pretty pin diagram isn't as clear about it as newer pretty pin diagrams for buses. Newer diagrams will label them as SPI0 and SPI1 if they're separate buses. The documentation for the Adafruit Feather ESP32-S2 could be improved in this regard.

honest trail
#

I got it working. I think the case is, there are two busses and either can be used on either set of pins, it comes down to how you initialize those pins with whatever firmware platform you're using (I'm using MicroPython). So I tell it, "use bus 2, with pins X, Y, Z"

ebon dew
#

Yep, so this is an example of 2 SPI buses not being mentioned in the pretty pins diagram.

#

The same is true for multiple I2C buses which are also not listed.

#

I will leave some feedback to have the diagram updated.

umbral phoenix

next path
#

@late fulcrum what app?

#

I'm curious what hardware might interface with wireshark

#

also curious what hardware might be worth fiddling with

whole jacinth

i think Linux has a virtual network interface that captures USB protocol messages, and Wireshark uses that

i think the USB Beagle (several models) is a fairly good hardware analyzer, if somewhat expensive

whole jacinth

macOS supposedly also lets you use Wireshark to capture USB traffic, but it requires turning off a lot of security protections

next path
#

Who needs security? Lol

#

Can it do it without external hardware @whole jacinth ?

#

That would be legit. I've got a Mac and would love to do this for free lol

#

Also without the headache of additional hardware. Cost aside

whole jacinth
#

yeah the general way it works is by having the device plugged into a port on the host that’s running Wireshark. monitoring traffic between an arbitrary host and device is what you want something like the Beagle (or Cynthion?) for

next path
#

?

#

So I can't just sniff my own USB traffic without an external piece of hardware?

whole jacinth
#

if you’re running Wireshark, it’ll sniff traffic between the host you’re running Wireshark on and some device

next path
#

Like my own keyboard?

whole jacinth
#

yeah

next path
#

Or an Xbox adaptive controller?

whole jacinth
#

in theory. i haven’t tried this personally

No cynthion device required?

#

Hmm

#

Do you know who might have more hands on experience with this?

#

I appreciate your help but I'd also love input from people with hand on experience with it. Not sure where to look for people with hands on USB reverse engineering

tardy badger
#

You could probably just use wireshark on a raspberry pi or beaglebone

#

With raspberry pi you get the advantage of a GUI

whole jacinth
#

https://superuser.com/questions/873896/wireshark-usb-traces-explanations makes it sound like the Wireshark capture is at the IRP/URB level (the host kernel’s abstraction for talking to its actual USB host hardware), so it’s not as complete as what the Beagle would give you (you’d miss NAK/ACK traffic, etc), but might still be good enough for reverse engineering

#

Yeah, red pine, white pine, Nova Scotia pine

#

Black pine

ebon dew
#

probably regular white pine

tardy badger
#

Florida has tons of Australian pine (the tall pine trees that fall over if you so much as look at them wrong)

ebon dew
#

i didn't cut the tree down i don't know

tardy badger
#

If you got it from Home Depot or a lumber yard, it’s likely just red pine or Douglas fir

#

Douglas fir is a common wood for framing

ebon dew
#

got it from a local 84 Lumber kind of place. had it delivered so i didn't pick out the boards.

tardy badger
#

Looks like southern yellow pine

ebon dew
#

ok we'll go with that 🙂

tardy badger
#

Lol

ebon dew
#

cut it into a 4 foot section, probably weighs about 25lbs, 2x12's are heavy.

tardy badger
#

Very rugged though

ebon dew
tardy badger
#

Heh..

ebon dew
#

This is what happened to the old fiberboard shelf. Started creaking and breaking in the middle.

tardy badger
#

I discovered that Home Depot has a very nice prefabricated shelf section

#

Very nice shelves to hang on your wall

ebon dew
#

I had a lot of much heavier stuff on the shelf that I removed, it was worse than the picture shows too.

#

yeah umm that is a fiberboard shelf from home depot lol

tardy badger
#

Lol it’s a bit thin, and I personally would have used 3 brackets to hold it up

#

Over 2ft in length should have 3 brackets to be safe

ebon dew
#

probably would have been better to go with those laundry wire shelves. live and learn. over compensating with the 2x12 I know but I have a lot of heavy stuff to put on that shelf. Will be making a L bracket that attaches to the workbench from underneath so all the weight won't be on the shelf brackets.

#

yes and will be adding a 3rd bracket

tardy badger
#

Hard to beat a nice thick wood shelf

ebon dew
#

think i still have about 5 brackets left. after this one i intend to make an L shape and wrap it along the wall to the right too.

tardy badger
#

I’m a big fan

ebon dew
#

all storage depends on maximizing the amount of horizontal surfaces

#

because gravity

tardy badger
#

Yeah, gravity does get in the way a lot

ebon dew
#

well in space it's different, maybe maximizing perpendicular surfaces makes more sense.

#

yeah i could have probably avoided all this with 3 brackets 🤦

#

user error, bad design

tardy badger
#

Live and learn

#

Sonic adventure 2 taught me that

#

😅😂

tranquil swallow
slender haven
# tranquil swallow Do you have a recommendation for a flight controller, really I have no idea when...

I haven't been in it for a year or so, and the hobby moves fast. Anything at least F4 based, and even F4 is probably on its way out. Anything F7 based, you'd be safe. Matek and Mamba are good names. As for tx/rx, if you have nothing yet, go with an ELRS long range system, as it's just as good as crossfire (range measured in kms) but way cheaper and more open source. If you're in North America, 915MHz, if you're in EU, 433MHz.. if you're anywhere else, check your local regs to see which region you're in for things like LoRa, and that will be where you should go for ELRS.

#

I guess Diatone is still selling the Matek F405 line, so it hasn't moved on that much while I've been out.

Pokeball cake from Wish

Lol (I made it)

New belt sander came in. Chewed right through the sap in like 5 minutes. Can has sand!

Only a partial eclipse happening today, but it has started

rapid geode
#

its full on coudy here. all those people that went to the falls are gonna see nothing

#

3:20 its gonna be here. ill go out and look anyway

late fulcrum
#

Cloudy here too

tardy badger
#

Best it’s going to get here

whole jacinth
#

overcast here, not likely to clear up in time to see anything interesting

ebon dew
#

It actually turned Dallas at 2:45pm into night. Can see here in the screenshot. It was actually a real full eclipse holy cow!

rapid geode
#

it JUST got sunny

#

ha

#

neat

#

wow, it actually became night time here for 60 seconds

#

that was neat

whole jacinth
#

i couldn't see anything on account of the clouds, but it did suddenly get a lot darker than it does in daytime without a thunderstorm

rapid geode
#

we had very slight clouds during the full eclipse but that was ok, cause it blocked some light so you could look at it

#

nice ring

#

my phone camera was useless though

#

just blown out

#

best i got

valid spoke
#

I've been trying to source replacement motors for some of my machines

#

It's been the most exhausting thing

#

Small DC motors nowadays are made like garbage

#

I'm getting samples from different manufacturers and they have crappy bushings

#

Bad tolerances

#

Subpar performance
Some of their "high quality samples" also came with rust and their recommendation was to run it by hand to clear the rust and then feed the 6vdc motor 12vdc to free it up

#

Why is it so hard to find quality DC motors

#

I might start rewinding motors again

#

Or make them myself

rapid geode
#

sanyodenki has some nice ones... you wont like the price though. :x

ebon dew
valid spoke
#

100 at least

#

So maybe they'll do a bulk discount

rapid geode
#

Sanyo, doubt it.

#

they are they most expensive motors ive ever had to buy

ebon dew
#

Anything on digikey that might be acceptable? They'll do bulk discounts.

valid spoke
#

Do they have small DC motors

rapid geode
#

sanyo makes all sorts of dc, fans, brushless, etc. ive only bought their ac servos, and they are brutal

#

$1000s

ebon dew
#

oh they must have been in that really expensive fan on a stick thing from last year?

#

or was that a lamp? can't remember.

rapid geode
#

?

valid spoke
#

I mean the original motors are Sanyo DC motors

rapid geode
#

i think the monster crazy hurricane fan they had on ltt was sanyo

valid spoke
#

And mabuchi

#

But they don't make em anymore

rapid geode
#

ah

valid spoke
#

Mabuchi does a 5000 minimum to make new ones

#

The most I'll ever need is 500

#

The most

rapid geode
#

hmm

ebon dew
valid spoke
#

I'll look at Johnson electric tho thank you for the digikey idea

#

@ebon dew

rapid geode
#

what type of motors are there. just the basic stamped steel canned brush dc?

valid spoke
#

Hold on

ebon dew
#

actually it's kind of funny the motors you're talking about are more expensive than that ridiculously expensive dyson lamp.

valid spoke
#

This is the datasheet by one

#

It's the same part number for mabuchi

#

Now the original Sanyo motor j have the part number but there is no datasheet

#

This is the closest equivalent I can find

#

Only issue is the bolt spacing is too big

#

The top one is the biggest issue

rapid geode
#

0.23w. feel the poweeer

valid spoke
#

The bottom one I can butcher one in by doing unholy things with a mill to some countersink Allen bolts

valid spoke
#

AC synchronous motors

#

2000hp sometimes

rapid geode
#

370 is a common rc size from the 80s

valid spoke
#

So this is very small

#

It is

rapid geode
#

but they kinda went awat

valid spoke
#

Which is why the only replacements i find are

rapid geode
#

i assume you cant use a brushless?

valid spoke
#

Crappy ones with sintered iron bearings

#

And other subpar decisions

valid spoke
rapid geode
#

theres lots of $5 brushless 370 size motors

valid spoke
#

Where

rapid geode
#

with bearings, aluminium housings,

valid spoke
#

Plug me in

rapid geode
#

hobby king is where i ge that typoe of thing

valid spoke
#

Problem is

#

I need the rpm to be around 6000

rapid geode
#

set rpm to whatever you want. truck will be what torque and voltaGE

#

rc specs are sorta upside down vs the normal torque.rpm ratings of an industrial motor. so you need to figure out some specw first

#

whats the voltage?

valid spoke
#

Voltage is around 6V

#

But

#

I can increase it a smidge

#

To maybe 8

rapid geode
#

so youd want in the 1000kv range. (1000rpm per volt)

#

for idea power

valid spoke
#

Okay

#

So hobby king

#

370 size motor

rapid geode
valid spoke
#

Around 1000kv

#

Oh that would be so good

rapid geode
#

first one i found. this is a higher preformance 120w motor

#

(120w is peak current draw, so in real terms, its about 20-25w

valid spoke
#

Thank you this has been very helpful @rapid geode

rapid geode
#

that seems to be the viable one in stock
