Or Cities Skylines rendering the individual teeth of everyone in the city.
That $20k Furuno radar (plus the PS3 and software) outperformed Raytheon's $20M radar. Raytheon was Not Pleased to lose that contract.
"my x86 box is better than your x86 box!"
I can imagine.
i recently had that thought over the current state of consoles, they really don't offer much value now
The weird thing is that the $20k radar produced a better pulse shape, which gave the software something to chew on. The Raytheon radar was fully transistorized, but the vacuum tube Furuno outperformed it due to the improved pulse.
A friend gave me a PS5 because it overheated. Taking it apart, I could see they tried to push it too far and make it up with a liquid coupled heatsink. Didn't work.
x86 is just sad at this point. We've pushed it basically as far as it will go in terms of IPC. At this point future performance improvements will have to rely on either (a) compatibility-breaking architecutural changes, or (b) manufacturing improvements. The former is mostly pointless because x86 is an antiquated architecture. The latter is living on borrowed time.
its been "replaced" several times, but none have gained a foothold. except arm coming form the bottom now.
wonder what an arm workstation cpu would be
Ask Ampere. They made one.
Propped up by windoze but that's going away, presumably followed to the grave by X86
One can only hope.
windows aint going nowhere any time soon, but we'll see. somethign has to grab hold, and it doesnt seem to be linux.
i thought beos was gonna be cool, then it went away
maybe desktop machines will be what goes away
It turns out MICROS~1 doesn't care about it any more (they're making all their money from cloud these days), so they're quietly replacing the underpinning of windoze with Linux.
Idk about linux, I'm seeing more takeup thanks to valve's thing, even seeing antivax boomers making linux tutorials on my feed now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVI6SCtVu4c
FFMPEG comes with Linux as a terminal based application and video converter. But there is an easy way to convert sound and video files to other formats. I show you how with MystiQ. You can also use QWinFF.
The upshot is that in a little while, "windows only" games will no longer exist, they'll run on Linux too.
But perhaps depend on Microsoft-specific APIs.
i dont think theres is MONEY in windows anymore. thats for sure.
They've been trying to force everyone to use their AI, and I am having none of it.
That's a build I'd want to do. 😄
Doh!
@rapid geode have you considered fabbing your own keyswitches, since its tangential to making keycaps
Welp, new fear unlocked.. driving on a large bridge over a harbor and it getting struck by a large container ship that’s struggling to maintain power which then causes the bridge to collapse.. I hope all the people who ended up in the water are okay 😥
Is that a real thing that happened or an irrational fear?
Real thing. The Francis Scott Key bridge in Maryland was struck by a container ship this morning and it completely collapsed with a number of vehicles on it
It’s all over the news
modern container ships are possibly a good example of just because you can scale up something that large doesn’t mean it’s a good idea
trying to search for videos on a topic and the whole front page is ai generated garbage and I can't even hide or block these channels
have you seen the latest cruise ships? i used to work downtown Seattle (pre-pandemic) and some of the docking ships were taller than the buildings
Holy cow it broke that bridge like it was made out of toothpicks.
Why didn’t they call for tug rescues when they lost power? 😞
I think it was too late at that point. Just the distance they were at
one might say they are hard to contain
Maybe is that I haven't really followed the news, but stuff lately is videogamey
I saw a post on a local information fb page about how their phone call got rerouted to a scammer call center.
Kind of an interesting situation. I suspect three possible situations:
- They have malware on their phone that is running some call forwarding type scheme in it.
- They are using a 3rd party calling service and their account is compromised in some way.
- They received a fake statement from the scammers for the company they thought they were calling and just fell for a phishing type email/mail scam.
- Scammers biased Google results to give an incorrect number for a company (this one is known to happen)
The person called the number on their statement so probably this but planting it in a phishing statement
I know I've mistyped a number at least one by exactly one digit and gotten a phone-number-squatter.
Phone numbers suck.
Back in the day, AT&T bought 1-800-OPERATOR, thinking that an easy to remember number would have people use them over their competitors. MCI immediately bought variant spellings like OPERATER, OPERETOR, OPARETOR, etc. and cleaned up. AT&T ended up quickly retrenching, replacing the campaign with 1-800-CALL-ATT in the hope that people could remember/spell that better.
I really should bike over to the respective headquarters for Apple and Google and kidnap a few software engineers out of the actual-phone-portion-of-things teams and poke them with sharp sticks until they agree to get rid of all of the UI whackyness that prevents me from copying a phone number from HERE and pasting it to THERE under all circumstances.
I am not messaging some rando person my babka recipe for Easter. Sure it's just the one on the King Arthur Flour website, I don't share it with telephone SMS randos.
(why are there no pointy-stick emojii !!!)
I just long-press on a number to copy & paste..
Android is pretty good at identifying phone numbers, so a quick-tap will take me to the dialer, with the number.
I can? Maybe it's likely down the app
Sometimes it happens too with WhatsApp
Hm maybe I can start again at being a scalper
Apparently on 7950X you can somewhat mine on them.
I had a lot of fun during the eth spike
crypyo needs to die. ha
No more HTTPS?
nope. banned
out of curiousity i looked and you can make about 30 cents a day with a rtx3060 mining
ha
Qubit with a R7950
Pretty bad that you'll have to pay at least ~800€ for a functional system
Like there aren't multisocket m5 boards, or psus for more boards
Think about the efficiency! A couple of cents a day running on a 1KW machine that costs housands of dollars! 😍
(This is satirical by the way)
Crypto in general just.... hmm how do i say it without getting flagged by the automod
It sucks
It just sucks

i used to watch on YouTube every weds a while back then stopped for some reason, it turned into years before I knew it. good to see you guys are still hosting your shows. I am trying to get used to discord. I am 61 and I find it uncomfortable and anxiety-producing.
i'm not a fan of discord but everyone uses it, so it is what it is
i miss forums
what would you rather use? IRC?
ew ha
I was using IRC prior to discord tbh
actually, irc was ok
but I recognize IRC is quite dated for what people want now, so I'd be ok with some decentralized fediverse type platform, or telegram
IRC was good fun if you knew how to make chatbots
discord is just irc with your data monetised
Yeah
we could go back to BBS's.
i never did anything online til about the late 90s. so i missed all the weird stuff haha
if you liked IRC bots well you're in luck because there are tons of them for discord too. there is a case to be made that discord is just a modern version of IRC.
i am a bot. beep boop
IRC was big in the late 2000s and early 2010s
i used irc for work
I used it for gaming
so was limewire and napster. some things don't always work out.
haha
I think Twitch still uses IRC as the backend for their chat
I know they used it at one point
I think Twitch uses something closer to discord at this point
i knew there was something out there but couldn't remember which one it was. think you're right.
all the IRC bots got ported to Twitch bots.
my friend wrote a chat bot "girl" and it was amazing how many people tried to hit on it in private messages
Not surprised given people have crushes on e-girls
Or the streamers who use avatars
so weird. like, surely they know its not a real person. all it could say was "hi"
It’s pretty cool how good avatars have become for real time streaming
and little else
like 8 canned responses
avatars? like a 3d character in real time?
yea
I watched a video of someone doing all the animation for streaming avatars and it is.. intense (2D/3D animated personas)
i dont pay any attention to streaming
at this point you have enough technology to automate the streamer entirely
fake streamers
i've seen some of the animated avatars, yeah some of the face and body tracking is kind of amazing. there's also one that applies makeup so the streamer doesn't have to worry about putting on makeup. there were a couple people caught out for being guys with female ai generated faces. it was mind blowing to see how realistic some of these camera apps are.
Oh yeah, it’s pretty good
so these are realistic avatars, not just cartoon characters?
the animated avatars are very stylistic and cartoonish, but there is an economy built around them
looking good. what's the plate for?
Nice looking enclosure
heat sink for the pi
so slim, looking sleek.
I’ll tell you what, you’re definitely a much better 3d modeler than I lol
i was gonna cut it, but i think ill wait til i get the rubber buttons and measure them in real life. i trust nothing anymore til its in my hands haha
Hehe, yeah I get that
haha. thanks. although, it my actual job for 30 years, so i hope i dont suck at it
heatsinks are very important. i purchased a little wifi camera recently that gets so hot it will melt the abs case and start a fire.
yeah. heat can be surprising
Well you’re not homeless if that’s any indication 😬
Measured 169F with my digital temp gun.
Either that or you have 24hr access to a library and are fooling us all
Anything is possible in this day and age
abs wont cat fire till over 500f
😆
Got some tiny heatsinks and now it doesn't get above 99F.
but it will deform
oh there are images people have posted where the entire case looked like someone took a blowtorch to it.
ha. i dont even know where the library is here. hmm. there must be one nearby.
now im curious ha
ah, next to the hospital. makes sense (3km away)
ah yeah. that im not sure. libraries have faded from being a necessary service
The other library close to me is fairly large, open like 12hrs a day
libraries next to hospitals is a great idea. both are generally places where quiet is appreciated.
the toronto reference library is cool though. cause you can look at original books frokm 200 years ago
when you need the real "source"
Libraries play a pretty big role in areas with lots of families. Utah just happens to be known for large families.
A particular group of nice people
ah the early days of trying to digitize old records. kids today might not ever know the joy of the microfiche.
cause you have to dump the kids somewhere?
Who don’t drink hot beverages but consume so much soda/pop that there are so many soda shops here.
haha
There are three soda shops less than a mile from me
i can see that. gotta drink something if not coffee or alcohol
sugar and caffeine have always been popular items since like the day humans discovered them.
Utah has more soda shops per capita than anywhere in the US 😅
Dirty sodas were invented here too
i vaguely remember a soda shop" here in the 80s
A dirty soda is a soda with things like flavorings, creamer, whipped cream, etc.. mixed in
and for a short time so was Coca-Cola, the real Coca. something most of us have never had the privilege of trying. this is why we can't have nice things.
Think a really elaborate root beer float
I did a country report on Canada and one thing listed as a popular drink was milk and ginger ale
It was.. weird
shudders
It didn’t taste bad, but it was very bizarre
they have gingerale in hospitals
haha
i wonder if thats just here.
we use is to settle stomaches
like if youve had some surgury and cant eat much. you can have that
In the southern US, ginger ale is as common as chicken noodle soup for being sick
hopita sandwiches are pretty bad too. bread and ham. and nothing else. no butte,r no mayo, no cheese.. ha
ah ok
I went to an HBCU (historically black college or university) and they (the students) were joking at the start of COVID that the school administrators were gonna give us ginger ale if we got sick so we could go to class
i ate like 10 hospital sandwiches in a few hours after being sick. (long story, functionally i hadnt eaten for weeks)
then they "fixed" me and i was so hungry they just brought me these sandwiches and i ate all of them from the ER. none left
haha
good timesd
haha
This was one meme circulating
I made this one
is gingerale there canada dry, or is it a different brand? i was always told it was called american dry down there, but that turned out to be a lie.
We have Canada Dry, we also have store brands, Seagram’s, Vernor’s
ah
I like the Canada Dry ginger ale and cranberry flavor
I like that one too
wow they are doing a lot of flavours right now. mango, backberry. cherry
The blackberry one as pretty good too
I like the cranberry sprite but I couldn’t find it this last Christmas
never liked sprite
there was an orange 7 up that i liked
i think orange
maybe somethign else
One soda I wish I could find is Pitch Black Mtn Dew
unfortunately because i know what pop actually costs i would never buy one of those haha.
It’s the convenience
Not having to go out to the store
Plus I end up not wanting it as much which is surprising to me
i would get a real soda machine instead if i wanted pop. mount it to the coutner. rooth beer on tap for 5 cents a litre
i remember at the theatre the cups cost more than the pop
I love root beer
We have a soda stream thing that gets used solely for carbonated water.
MOUNTINA DEW
sadly mountain dew isnt sold here officially, however its getting easier to get it from stores that import products from the US, and its easily their most sought-after product.
are there mountain dew smuggling rings? the people need their hackerjuice
i'm afraid you're going to have to be more specific - what won't "launch" what "payload"? (once you post that info, you're more likely to get help 😀 )
There was a jolt dealing ring at my high school because it was available but hard to find.
Lucky ya. Here you can only find cola, orange and lemon stuff. Crap market
is that the one that had twice the cafience (which was still 0)?
i dont know if we had that here
So, Jolt was the first extra-caffeine cola, which then kicked off a bunch of different other bizarre energy drinks.
It was 95% placebo probably. "OMG THIS ONE'S THE GOOD STUFF"
i cant have cafiene
Why no caffeine?
its evil
no. it counteracts my drugs. so its not good. a small glass of coke wouldnt hurt me, but every day would be bad
so if i do drink pop its root beer, or ginger ale. things wiht no cafiene
luckily i never liked colas anayay
Yeah, I had to give up soda altogether for a while and I really lost a taste for it.
In India they have Thums Up and it's like ... extra spicy cola. And that's kinda nice, maybe a dixie cup sized serving thereof, then I can't get past all of the sugar.
And over there they have ginger-lemon soda which i kinda wonder if that's something I could recreate at home.
Tea is a different matter. That gets purchased by the pound.
I went to Indy Microcenter for the first time yesterday because I was traveling to see Dune in 70mm Imax, and I saw neopixels on the shelves. I got myself 8mm diffused leds, a x24 neopixel ring, and a 16x32 matrix. it'd be nice to see more makerspace stores. Bestbuy should pivot their stores to be more maker friendly.
Sounds like you want to reinvent 80s RadioShack 😄
I mean, if Bestbuy is getting rid of physical dvds and games they could at least stock something like the raspberrypi and arduino aisle at Microcenter.
@fair summit Hello, i got a circuit board for circuit playground. Is there a channel for this?
Sorry for pinging you by the way.
what sw are you going to run on it? CircuitPython, Arduino, or MakeCode, and what kind of Circuit Playground is it: Express, classic or Bluefruit?
it says on the back
Express, and makecode
#help-with-makecode but there aren't many people in there. There is also a MakeCode forum: https://forum.makecode.com/
we do have quite a few tutorials in the Learn system: https://learn.adafruit.com/category/makecode
np
they need space for guitars... 9or is that venture gone already?)
i wouldnt mind guitars
throw in some working amps so I can annoy the entire store with my stilted rendition of smoke on the water
NO STAIRWAY
Denied!
@fair summit i basically made a spin the bottle code!
makecode is really easy to get started with!
it's pretty easy to me !
@fair summit wanna review my code?
nope, I'm not familiar with the JS. I did introduce MakeCode blocks to a bunch of HS students just last week
@hard estuary No wonder I didn't get a notification for the new bootloader episode. It's not on youtube. Are you not syndicating to Youtube anymore?
I found it here though. https://www.circuitpythonshow.com/@thebootloader
There seems to be a problem with it. It only plays the first 6:30 no matter the platform. Might be someting wrong with the encoding?
I'm away from home today, but I will look tomorrow. Thank you for pointing that out
I’m going to be giving a short talk at Teardown2024 in Portland this summer! I think my write up on Adafruit Playground helped make for a convincing talk proposal! Links below! ⬇️

Why I can get "free" and fast shipping from AliExpress/cn, but not with externals like jlc, pine and so on?
free shipping is a lie.
its just blended in the price
also... italy
just be happy anyone ships to you at all 😛
Likely, but yet stuff it's somehow least expensive
But AliExpress is a weird place, whole boards that cost 1/5 of the main mcu
I recently got butthurt for a german that won't ship to italy, and that in the Balkans they get AliExpress/cn stuff in just 7 days
aliexpress usually comes here 4-7 days
depends what you pick for method of course
digikey comes next morning
Lucky. I need to wait like 14 days on average.
But I can't complain, not too long ago was like 3/2 months
jlcpcb stuff in the mail. should arrive mid to late next week
yeah. used to take 2 weeks to mail something in the same city in canada
so, be happy
also, elext better governments over there
hehehe
anyhow
There are too many old people, and mafia is at the top, not in the streets
I got my PCBs in but unfortunately JLCPCB forgot the stencil I ordered 😒
doh
Wait, apparently there’s a second box on the shipment that is still coming 🙃
They only moved the PCBs through..
But it says both were delivered 🤔
bwomp, ive only ordered once from JLC and it took ages to arrive
is that a feather btw?
nice
In other news, I got my BGA samd51 feather working
Lots of space for more things too
Yup lol
There are tons of open pins too which means I could do so wild things.
On the FPGA feather, just an FT232H usb interface chip
oh, so its just an fpga
Yeah
what is your intended use?
Uhh... FPGA development?
shhh
It’s mostly focused on education and helping create a board that is easy to access, combine with tons of feather wings
ah ok
That way you can learn to write different protocol interfaces like I2C, SPI, parallel bus, UART, etc..
ethercat?
Sure
anyhow. i dont know enough about this to even ask questions ha\
i know it gets used in servo drives and io apps
For something like a servo controller it makes a lot of sense due to the ability to implement as many timers as you need.
Handling protocol translation with low (and predictable!) latency is also useful.
so this is adafruits first product huh
Yup
any plans to remake or re-release this gizmo?
or is it just part of adafruit history
Probably just part of history
I have faith in your hand pasting skills. You got this. It is a lot of work but it's doable... how many boards are we talking about here though?
I have 20 of those lol
I’ll just wait in the second part of the shipment to get here
Quiet Friday night
I don’t have anything cool to contribute, I’m just shocked at the poverty of software for the iPad relative to its compute
Can anyone find the product in this video on the site?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1RlHjUq2iE
We got a request from some folks for "solder-less pin header" - these snap-apart headers look just like your regular pin headers but they have a little slot in the shorter end that can make a cold-contact with pads on a PCB. only thing is, since they are wedged in, you need some good leverage and it takes a few tries to get the hang of it. but t...
These type of things are usually a sneak peak. If you read the YouTube video description it says coming soon to the adafruit shop....
If you go to https://www.adafruit.com/new you can see there's no new listing for it yet.
It's so new it hasn't even been added to the store yet. 😉
Thanks!
Outside of open/simplecv or related, I have no way to check the windows of a browser?
Current issue: we use chrome to display stuff in a commercial area. Sometimes randomly, chrome opens two windows, one with the correct thing, and on top of it, a white chrome page, that covers the thing.
This happens with every chrome based browser and even firefox. I can't find what's up with it.
I thought at first to check with python how many windows are open, but the number of processes =! Number of opened windows
are you already using kiosk mode in these browsers? Maybe the website is doing something strange? I assume you have disabled popups in the browser
We tried both the kiosk mode and without. Currently they're all without the kiosk because it's really limited.
Pop ups are disabled, we disabled even updates, but at any random time, it keeps open this blank window on top the other
I haven't really followed through the case, as my partners, but currently they're literally closing the white window by hand
is the entire window white or is it the page contents? If you do "Show source" would it be blank?
this might be a network problem
all-white, some people suggest turning off hw acceleration, but I'm not sure that's the issue here
if firefox is doing the same thing, I think that points to something external to the browsers
What you mean by show source? I have not a pc at hand
Actually the pcs are all in a closed Network without access to the internet
The system that they use is pure garbage as they bind the correct webpage with cookies and hostnames
ctrl-U in a browser window will show the HTML source
there's probably some menu command for that too
the website is garbage or the kiosk OS is garbage? Not sure what is garbage 🙂
Ah I tried to launch the dev tools ctrl shif I (if memory doesn't lie to me) and it literally does nothing on it
The only thing that you can do is closing the window or rebooting
If chrome is unresponsive
Both. But the website/management is one of it's kind
And it did cost like 500k
(Somehow public stuff cost a lot, and they always delivere garbage)
Quid pro quo I’m guessing
(as our "service" tbh)
sounds like an issue to be brought up with the provider of the whole system, could be anything
It's such a mess with sourcing that there's like no provider, nobody has responsibilities
ok, this is a management problem 🙂
So anyway, outside of image recognition libs, there's nothing else that I can use?
I ll have a look thanks
Opencv sounds overkill imo
#help-with-projects is sort of the catch-all.
Thanks again for letting me know - th episode definitely hangs, I opened an issue with my podcast host. I forgot about YouTube, I'll get the audio up tomorrow I hope
Glad it wasn't just me. I thought I was doing something wrong at first.

does anyone know where adafruit actually sources these from? trade secret?
was able to find very similar parts on aliexpress, but i still don't know the supplier they come from
As far as I can tell, the display module by itself is an SSD1327Z made by ShineWorld Innovations (https://www.swicn.com/amp/product-by-subcategory/5) and the board is an Adafruit design (https://learn.adafruit.com/assets/96789).

How would you explain to someone what left and right mean with words alone
Is that even possible
I feel like it’s like trying to describe a primary color to someone who hasn’t seen it
right-handed, left-handed?
equate it to some sensory input... eye, ear, touch
or relative to fixed directions... facing north, east is right
All of which are examples of left/right.. without defining which is left or right. lol
But then they need a compass. 😅
most humans have their heart on the left side of their chest
On both hands, make an L-shape with your index finger and thumb.
Dictionary uses relationship to fixed directions
The one that looks like an L, is left..
that doesn’t work for many dyslexic people, i’ve heard
Palms down, obvs
That's a horrible word!
Right: 90° clockwise from the direction facing or traveling
Left: 90° counterclockwise from the direction facing or traveling
give someone a nut and a bolt and tell them it will only tighten by rotating it to the right
clockwise can be derived from the direction of movement of a shadow of a vertical object, if you know your hemisphere
It's upside-down...
then the nut is rotating to the right...
😉
and some joker will have a left-hand thread bolt and nut lying around
pfft plumbers
As you mention that....... trollololol
this is why the world needs standards. right threads only from now on.
From the top or bottom of the nut? And what do top and bottom mean?
up/down are easier to define in terms of gravity, unless you’re somehow weightless
did the chicken or egg come first
Yes, there are standard thread pitches for both left and right. 😄
I actually think argon’s heart example is the most compelling, that’s conveniently asymmetrical about us
If physics taught me anything, calling down the positive direction changes nothing
Never much liked the "rotate left/right" thing. What does left mean to something going around in a circle?
there is no up without down
something is never upside-down unless you know which side is up or down.
if you’re lucky, parts with left-hand threads are identified with a molded or cut marking
if you start seeing a bolt go in at an odd angle... it's ok just twist harder it'll go in.
Tighten it until it strips then back off a quarter turn.
Ha, I know three languages, and in all nobody can understand me when I talk.
I understand 3 languages; English, Bad English.. and American. 😛
I think you have to define your audience. if your audience is people who understand your language and are standing in front of a sign explaining and labeling its left and right bits, it gets easier.
i understand fringlish

Some of the funny videos I see these days involve back and forth arguments about how Americans say particular words wrong, and then Americans saying “sure, we’ll pronounce those words properly when you pronounce these other words properly.” Great comedy for me lol
I made the mistake of marrying an American, so I have enough experience. 😛
there are no words americans pronounce properly
You’ve not been to enough of America
You can travel 100 miles and hear the same word pronounced two different ways lol
Stick with Icelandic.
Personally, I want to learn one of the indigenous African clicking languages.
ha. that seems not possible in my head
It is probably really hard if you don’t grow up with it
its not just different words like german or french. its a different concept of language
japanese and chinese people have a hard time with romantic languages (and the other way round) cause its not a simple straight translation
My maternal great grand parents would have been Saami when they lived in Finland
i ask my friend what they speak in nigeria and she was like.. we have 1000 languages...
that must be hard to manage
Saami is a beautiful language, I just have little opportunity to practise it.
Finnish is already plenty hard to learn, and Saami, though somewhat related, is harder to find resources for
I couldn’t imagine having to switch up a dozen languages in a day
canada has hundreds of languages, but we only "officially" use 2
I imagine most speak a common tongue with regional dialects
3 if you count french (not quebec)
The reason for this is the language was banned for some time
The Saami were treated very poorly.
yeah, most of the countries where they historically lived tried to wipe out their culture
sounds like a british thing to do :x
The Saami have been incredibly resilient though ❤️
Lol, gotta beat Russia to it
hmm. maybe we can steal greenland
Greenland is really fascinating
there were talks (i dont know if they were ever serious) about iceland joining canada.
I just finished playing HD2 with my bro. 😛

You never finish spreading managed democracy
the last thing we appropriated was newfoundland from the uk
I had considered playing today but got busy
We ran out of bul... democracy seeds.
ha
Lol
😄
I want to get it, but don't know how well it runs in proton and am not a fan of creating an account with sony.
You don’t have to link it to a PlayStation account
You just need steam
I already had a Sony PlayStation account before so I linked it 🤷♂️
Is it required for coop?
hmm
It’s worth it

I haven’t had as much fun in a game in a while
I've been using openai more frequently. Sometimes it can produce code that is years more advanced than my hand coding skills. This has allowed me to build scripts that I would have never attempted before. It's also refined code snippets I've been using for years to be far more efficient.
trust nothing, verify everything
And uh... don't use an LLM that was trained unethically.
Just like how the extinction of dinosaurs allowed the proliferation of mammals and their potential unlocked to the fullest, would the sane thing happen for AI when humans go extinct?
only if it reached the stage where it was truly self-replicating all by itself (e.g. no humands to fix machines)
It's... largely an irrelevant question at this point for the reason that Ed mentioned. Also, LLMs are incapable of 'thinking' critically. The fact that they can produce output in different tones which gives the illusion of 'intelligence' is a byproduct of the immense amount of training data scraped off the internet and nothing else.
Today is silly day my fellow adafolk, dont let yourself be fooled. Remember to double check
I need help... 😅
I just purchased 2x Milk-V Duo S boards... ☺️
I really should stop ordering stuff I don't need. Lol
It took me a while to find a picture of a smoking skeleton that wasnt ai generated
Ive been fooled
You saw my little humidity tracking website the other night- the JavaScript was all done by chatGPT because the amount of my life I want to spend doing JavaScript is zero. Chatgpt already knew about a JavaScript library that does what I needed, and it spit out some template code with my values filled in.
Saved me hours, nothing became sentient.
"nothing became sentient" -- are you sure about that? 😈
My JavaScript:
got mah buttons in. whee. just waiting for the pcbs now.
so, someone point me to a little neopixel on a mini break out with a screw hole ideally.
hm. maybe i should just use a 5mm.
perfect. ha
totally didnt expect to see you here
hi
Hm somehow gpt output is faster without an account vs with one
no thanks
i already play enough gacha games
why would anyone want gambling in their chatting app!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!?!?!
ah wait
ive been giga-fooled
just rewatched that movie yesterday
well, im a clown now
anyways just cause im on a clown and batman mood i changed my pfp to the jonkler

Anyone knows if there are any other 802.11ah / HaLow chipsets out there besides the Newracom NRC7292, Morse Micro MM6108, TaiXin Semi TXW8301 (TXW83xx) (and the supposed Texas Instruments CC1352P)?
I can't get the NRC7292 driver to work over USB, the TaiXin chip seems to be only sold in the China configuration (can't change to EU frequencies) and Morse Micro just isn't selling their chip(??) 😭
DHL is just dropping the ball.. my order had 2 pieces coming from JLCPCB, both cleared customs. Only one left Ohio and was delivered.. yet the stencil just sits in Ohio, hasn’t moved all weekend. 🙃
doh
mine says arrived in canada
but not dhl i dont think
was the prepaid duty slow service
I didn't realize that JLCPCB was making balls these days.
They just rolled out the service
I'm trying to understand this pinout. Is this saying that the board has 2 sets of SPI pins? One set on the left, one set on the right?
You'd have to look at the pin muxing tables in the datasheet to be sure, but it looks like it has a single SPI interface, but several of the signals can be routed to different GPIOs.
Oh I see. So I can have one SPI device, but there's some flexibility to where I plug in. Then in my firmware (say MicroPython), when I utilize their SPI code, that initializes SPI on those pins. Is that vaguely correct?
It should, although which set of pins it defaults to is anybody's guess.
@honest trail think there are up to 4 SPI busses, but some may be used for PSRAM, flash, etc. You can use virtually any pins you want for SPI.
I heard that unless you use the right pins, you're doing "software spi" rather than "hardware spi", is that true?
not 100% positive, but I don't think so. see p.24 https://www.espressif.com/sites/default/files/documentation/esp32-s2_datasheet_en.pdf
hmm, I don't quite understand what that graph is saying, but I might as well just try to hook up this OLED and see what happens! 🙏 thanks
@honest trail not a MicroPython expert, but looks like there may be some limitations https://docs.micropython.org/en/latest/esp32/quickref.html#hardware-spi-bus ...in any case, for a small display, I can't se that it would make much difference
oh, but that's ESP32
yeah, looks like the ESP32 was more limited than the ESP32-S2 as far as pin-mux-ing
When an SPI Host is set to 80 MHz or lower frequencies, routing SPI pins via the GPIO matrix will behave the same compared to routing them via IOMUX.
so just use any old unused GPIO and it's all good (especially to drive an OLED)
i really appreciate you helping me out, thanks
Some boards have multiple SPI buses. Multiple SPI pins listed could be either separate SPI buses or 1 bus with different available pins as Herr Brain said. You have to figure out which. That pretty pin diagram isn't as clear about it as newer pretty pin diagrams for buses. Newer diagrams will label them as SPI0 and SPI1 if they're separate buses. The documentation for the Adafruit Feather ESP32-S2 could be improved in this regard.
I got it working. I think the case is, there are two busses and either can be used on either set of pins, it comes down to how you initialize those pins with whatever firmware platform you're using (I'm using MicroPython). So I tell it, "use bus 2, with pins X, Y, Z"
Yep, so this is an example of 2 SPI buses not being mentioned in the pretty pins diagram.
The same is true for multiple I2C buses which are also not listed.
I will leave some feedback to have the diagram updated.
it's trickier to cast it in stone for espressif boards because the pins are not fixed to peripherals like rp2040 boards... almost any pin can be any almost any peripheral
has anyone written or seen a rust library for the Adafruit RP2040 CAN Bus Feather?
I have not
Also, hopefully all our Taiwanese friends are safe following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Hualien City, and the subsequent 6.5 and 5.7 magnitude aftershocks 😞
Microsoft is developing an Xbox AI Chatbot -- geez, talk about "would you like to play a game" 🤣
saw a picture of a knocked over building. seems pretty bad
Yeah, thankfully Taiwanese engineering has led to there being minimal structural damage for the most part. But any loss of life and property is sad
Quick python question: I'd like to write a function to decode DIMM part numbers to a class with all of the stick information. I'd like to aviod costly string operations, and I don't need string insert/delete as provided in other matching algorithms (eg, Levenshtien distance).
I'm normally biased against regex for lack of maintainability, but is regex matching the best option in this case?
This looks pretty straightforward. I would do this with regexp groups (parens) to parse each piece. Depending on how you make the info available, you could then use a dict for each extracted group value
That's exactly what I ended up doing. Since I can control the input value every time, I don't think regex will be too much of an issue
When you have "too much" Adafruit stuff. I looked all over last night and this morning since I was certain I had a nice Feather ESP32s2 "somewhere"... FINALLY found it underneath my FeatherWing CapTouch shield. Simply forgot where I was using it...
what i like is digging through a drawer of stuff and going "wait, when did i get that?"
all my good stuff is still "has left canada customs and is en route" which means "sometime between tomorrow and next month"
I'm still waiting on a shipping update for my 2x Milk-V Duo S.
My back after assembling boards
I think I need either a pick n place or a taller bench lol
ha
Are there plans to sell the RPi Zero 2 WH (the one with headers)? The RPi Zero WH exists (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3708), but I can only find the RPi Zero W, without headers (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5291)
i think they need to get the regular pi zero 2 in the first place. never been in stock whenever i look
oh, its in stock
ha
!!!
You can always add headers. Looks like AdaFruit will have solderless headers soon https://media.computerfairi.es/cache/media_attachments/files/112/181/590/411/600/626/original/e36aae187695fd14.mp4
Hey all, not sure where to ask this in the myriad of generous #help channels. Does anyone have a recommended budget method of sniffing USB packets from a random source to reverse engineer it? It's specifically all HID if that makes it any easier.
Fire up your app under VirtualBox and turn on USB monitoring?
there's supposedly a way to use Wireshark to do USB protocol captures, but i haven't tried it yet. there are hardware protocol analyzers, which can be very good, but they're usually expensive
@late fulcrum what app?
I'm curious what hardware might interface with wireshark
also curious what hardware might be worth fiddling with
i think Linux has a virtual network interface that captures USB protocol messages, and Wireshark uses that
i think the USB Beagle (several models) is a fairly good hardware analyzer, if somewhat expensive
the Great Scott Gadgets team (behind GreatFET One and HackRF) has the Cynthion project up on CrowdSupply that might a good option. ETA for shipping June 2024 - https://www.crowdsupply.com/great-scott-gadgets/cynthion
@lapis anchor it's like I asked a question and the crowd funding gods heard my plea
😲
Lol
Bookmarked for the morning
Thank you!!
macOS supposedly also lets you use Wireshark to capture USB traffic, but it requires turning off a lot of security protections
Who needs security? Lol
Can it do it without external hardware @whole jacinth ?
That would be legit. I've got a Mac and would love to do this for free lol
Also without the headache of additional hardware. Cost aside
yeah the general way it works is by having the device plugged into a port on the host that’s running Wireshark. monitoring traffic between an arbitrary host and device is what you want something like the Beagle (or Cynthion?) for
if you’re running Wireshark, it’ll sniff traffic between the host you’re running Wireshark on and some device
Like my own keyboard?
yeah
Or an Xbox adaptive controller?
in theory. i haven’t tried this personally
No cynthion device required?
Hmm
Do you know who might have more hands on experience with this?
I appreciate your help but I'd also love input from people with hand on experience with it. Not sure where to look for people with hands on USB reverse engineering
You could probably just use wireshark on a raspberry pi or beaglebone
With raspberry pi you get the advantage of a GUI
https://superuser.com/questions/873896/wireshark-usb-traces-explanations makes it sound like the Wireshark capture is at the IRP/URB level (the host kernel’s abstraction for talking to its actual USB host hardware), so it’s not as complete as what the Beagle would give you (you’d miss NAK/ACK traffic, etc), but might still be good enough for reverse engineering
Say, if you wanted to make a guide, where do you go to get the circut diagrams? I've been looking around for a creator, but no luck so far
Remember to open discord lootboxes to claim the clown makeup before its gone
I didn't need lootboxes in games and I certainly don't need them in Discord.
Which diagrams? For an Adafruit product or a different manufacturer?
Adafruit diagrams are usually in the main learn guide for a product. There's usually a downloads section in the learn guide and that has all the PCB files and wiring schematics.
Its an april fools joke 😒
Guess im the only clown
Do you mean schematic diagrams or "fritzing" diagrams (those are the pictures of breadboards and boards with colored wire connections)?
Whatever app whose USB behaviour you're trying to analyze
Any ideas on when the Solderless Headers (non-pi) are going to be in the store?
we don't predict this kind of thing; there isn't a "Coming Soon" yet
Fritzing diagrams, a lot of the guides have a simplified diagram showing how things are wired up in terms of switches, data pins and the like.
Figured if i wanted to make sure noone else has to go through all the trouble of what I did, I should make something that helps
This is really old but might help: https://learn.adafruit.com/using-the-adafruit-library-with-fritzing

i looked into mestastic, pretty neat project, and i discovered that there was a single node in my city
lets just say i know what board ill be making next
Wow, I love democracy
Was looking at that myself
I was thinking about getting a dozen boards and plugging them into my wife's workplaces which are scattered around my city lol
would probably be enough to bootstrap a solid mesh if I got one more person interested
Yeah seems like a good idea
Sadly there are probably like 3 people here in chile interested and im one of them
So making a mesh like that is impossible for me
Maybe ill try to make it some day
Well now you can make one and there will be 2?
Yeh
which country?
Chile
Hello guys
and 433 is not ham-license only?
Great project great potential you have here
Im not sure, theres very little info i could find
so 433 is going to go farther and be less impeded by objects. It will need larger antennas (longer wavelength)
I'm looking...
don't order yet
Did you already wander around https://www.subtel.gob.cl/. I also did a site search: https://www.google.com/search?q=433+mhz+site%3Asubtel.gob.cl and https://www.google.com/search?q=433+mhz+site%3A*.cl. But Spanish is not my second language 🙂
so it's OK?
Yup
Article K is about iot devices
And there in the list of frequencies is 433 and 915
excellent
So, 433 it is
433 is open in europe, 915 in north america.
Products like Crossfire and ELRS, which are long range radio control systems, use one or the other, depending on the country sold in
Same for LoRa devices.
This is south america, which is region 2, but it appears the Chilean regulations allow ti
So I bought a finishing palm sander in 2015 and never actually used it. Took it out of the box today to sand some shelves. The rubber sanding pad sheared off from dry rot after about 5 seconds of use. 😣 It took 9 years to get up the motivation to sand something and now I can't.
Hi, I'm looking for advice, I'm doing WiFi weather stations, I'm looking for a case that would be located outside and have a PCB board with sensors on board, what material would be the best, I thought to cut some plexiglass but I don't know. I don't have 3d printer so can't use printed parts. Any ideas?
@young vapor Look for something that has a weatherproof o-ring/seal and cable glands.
Adafruit does sell something like that. https://www.adafruit.com/product/3931
and here's a project that uses it. looks like it can squeeze a feather doubler inside, just the right size for most wireless sensor projects. https://learn.adafruit.com/diy-air-quality-monitor
Brent drilled air holes into the enclosure which would be a receipe for eventual rust and failure in a tropical climate. If air can get in, so can humidity & moisture. Look into an external outdoor temp sensor like this https://www.adafruit.com/product/4099
Thanks I appreciate
Is there a way to know if and when a product will be back in stock?
generally, no, but you can subscribe to the back-in-stock notifications
It feels good to ship orders
btw ill be getting the heltec lora 32 v3
strange question
but
how do i do that
i wanna eventually sell my boards as well
oooooh right tindie
Great way to see if it’s something you want to do. Pretty hassle free
are those anti static bags?
ah nice
cause i will be selling off my spare nes boars eventually. granted they dont have any components on them so maybe it doesnt matter
is tindie a good place for them? i notices the board i based mine off is on there. ha
you should talk to the original creator
i left their logo on it. im not really sure what the "rules" are. his was just an nes board with a different pinout. mines shanged the pinout again, and the outline, and the hole pattern
shipping costs more than the pcb. ha. good times
see an issue?
😛
and thats just to ship locally
to europe is $36
Anyone else enjoy the NJ earthquake this morning?
We just got an aftershock at 6pm
April 1st was a couple days ago. This seems odd enough that no one would actually believe it even on April 1st.
Imagine here in chile, shipping has got to be like 3x the board itself
tell me what it says https://everythingbutpizza.etsy.com/listing/1709622309
😛
its $30 to nz
i expect chile to be less, i hope
@tardy badger where is your board being sold
The fpga feather? https://www.oakdev.tech/store/p25/IcyBlue_FPGA_V2.html#/
doh!
ooh, spendy. is that cause the fpga is expensive, or mostly cause its expensive to make a small amount?
A mix of both. $28 parts cost, building in the time it takes to build, assemble, support, restock, replacements for of someone gets a bad board.
ah cool
The next FPGA feather I’m making will be.. above $125
Mostly because the FPGA chip itself costs like $40+
Too big of an area for the RPi?
Ah
doesnt matter, just cosmetic
woo
Nice
it even closes haha
although i need the screws in to really be sure theres no interference
Fingers crossed it all works
i have to order screws from mcmaster. thats gonna cost like $50
bah
button head torx
stainless steel
thats all i could find that would fit...
I just noticed this out of mu window
direct 3-phase without a transformer?
The transformer could be farther up the line and service more than one house
I dunno, I don't quite like the joints. The construction workers from the construction site in front of this "new" pole, literally jump around platforms without any kind of safety 😬
Hi, has anyone used an Mq135 sensor with 3.3v? (esp 32) I'm making a meteo station that is supposed to transmit data every 10min. In datasheet I saw it supposed to be 5v.
Where's mine???
uh oh
no problem here -- you may have just hit a glitch -- 💩 happens
coming soon
Its loading real slow here, but it did load.
Used my brothers old belt sander after getting some new belts for it. It was questionably old and rusty. Broke it on the first use. Aluminum drive sprocket exploded into shrapnel inside the cover. That's 2 sanders I've broken this week. I just want to sand some wood is that too much to ask?
Bought a cheapy belt sander. I only need to sand 1 board. Just 1 board.
Anyone here ever used multiwii software?
oh man, THATS a blast from the past.
I won't squash your dreams of using it, but take it from me, you'll NEVER get a good flying drone using it 😄 Modern Betaflight and INAV have supplanted whole fields of knowledge since MultiWii.
It's not even a fair comparison.. It's a 73 Pinto to a BMW i4 M50..
If you have visions of building your own flight controller from scratch, you still can. Modern FCs are just STM32F405,411,7xx MCUs with SPI IMUs attached.
Harbor freight?
73 pinto, a bomb on wheels
My parents had a 77 with a license plate floorboard 😂
No just an old Black & Decker BR300. It's probably 15 years old, rarely used, and rusty. It would cost me more to rejuvenate than to buy a new sander. Getting a cheapy SKIL of the same size so I can use the pack of belts I just bought.
Sorry, I was suggesting harbor freight for a cheap sander
I have a fairly cheap Ryobi sander. Works pretty well for my wood working needs
It was probably a step above harbor freight when it was new. Left to rust it just seized up and the sprocket gear turned itself into dust. It was quite impressive I should have taken a picture. Most of it turned into tiny bits of aluminum powder, cheap pot metal.
Ah, no I went with Amazon. I don't have a harbor freight near enough to make the trip worth it unless I'm going for a big item.
Ah gotcha
Same here. They did just open a Home Depot right up the road from me. Very dangerous for my wallet. Lol
It’s like.. 5 minutes from me 😅
I could have gone to home depot or Lowes yeah but as you said that's a dangerous excursion for the wallet sometimes.
But good news is I have a table saw and a miter saw now, and I built myself a workbench in my garage😅
I spent $200 on lumber alone. Just have to wear a hat and keep my eyes glued to the floor when I walk around. Basically need horse style blinders when walking through there. 😆
Heck yeah nice! I'm working on shelves but the sanding gods have seen fit to not allow me to sand. Broke 2 sanders in 1 week what are the odds.
I did get the new pad in for the orbital finishing sander but I'd have to sit there for like 8 hours holding it on 1 spot to make a dent. I thought it would be much more powerful than it is. Even with 60 grit it's like wet sanding with 1200 grit. 😦
a table top belt sander would be the wrong approach for a 2x12, pine.
I think it's just the palm sander. It's a finishing sander which I didn't know when I bought it. I was looking for a heavy duty orbital sander. It makes the top very very smooth and works great as a finishing sander though.
are there different types of pine? i dunno it's wood. 😛
Lol
I think I originally got it when I was going to strip and repaint my car. I didn't get it for wood.
probably regular white pine
Florida has tons of Australian pine (the tall pine trees that fall over if you so much as look at them wrong)
i didn't cut the tree down i don't know
If you got it from Home Depot or a lumber yard, it’s likely just red pine or Douglas fir
Douglas fir is a common wood for framing
got it from a local 84 Lumber kind of place. had it delivered so i didn't pick out the boards.
Looks like southern yellow pine
ok we'll go with that 🙂
Lol
cut it into a 4 foot section, probably weighs about 25lbs, 2x12's are heavy.
Very rugged though
Heh..
This is what happened to the old fiberboard shelf. Started creaking and breaking in the middle.
I discovered that Home Depot has a very nice prefabricated shelf section
Very nice shelves to hang on your wall
I had a lot of much heavier stuff on the shelf that I removed, it was worse than the picture shows too.
yeah umm that is a fiberboard shelf from home depot lol
Lol it’s a bit thin, and I personally would have used 3 brackets to hold it up
Over 2ft in length should have 3 brackets to be safe
probably would have been better to go with those laundry wire shelves. live and learn. over compensating with the 2x12 I know but I have a lot of heavy stuff to put on that shelf. Will be making a L bracket that attaches to the workbench from underneath so all the weight won't be on the shelf brackets.
yes and will be adding a 3rd bracket
Hard to beat a nice thick wood shelf
think i still have about 5 brackets left. after this one i intend to make an L shape and wrap it along the wall to the right too.
I’m a big fan
Yeah, gravity does get in the way a lot
well in space it's different, maybe maximizing perpendicular surfaces makes more sense.
yeah i could have probably avoided all this with 3 brackets 🤦
user error, bad design
Do you have a recommendation for a flight controller, really I have no idea when it comes to TX/RX
I haven't been in it for a year or so, and the hobby moves fast. Anything at least F4 based, and even F4 is probably on its way out. Anything F7 based, you'd be safe. Matek and Mamba are good names. As for tx/rx, if you have nothing yet, go with an ELRS long range system, as it's just as good as crossfire (range measured in kms) but way cheaper and more open source. If you're in North America, 915MHz, if you're in EU, 433MHz.. if you're anywhere else, check your local regs to see which region you're in for things like LoRa, and that will be where you should go for ELRS.
I guess Diatone is still selling the Matek F405 line, so it hasn't moved on that much while I've been out.
New belt sander came in. Chewed right through the sap in like 5 minutes. Can has sand!

its full on coudy here. all those people that went to the falls are gonna see nothing
3:20 its gonna be here. ill go out and look anyway
Cloudy here too
Best it’s going to get here
overcast here, not likely to clear up in time to see anything interesting
It actually turned Dallas at 2:45pm into night. Can see here in the screenshot. It was actually a real full eclipse holy cow!
it JUST got sunny
ha
neat
wow, it actually became night time here for 60 seconds
that was neat
i couldn't see anything on account of the clouds, but it did suddenly get a lot darker than it does in daytime without a thunderstorm
we had very slight clouds during the full eclipse but that was ok, cause it blocked some light so you could look at it
nice ring
my phone camera was useless though
just blown out
best i got
I've been trying to source replacement motors for some of my machines
It's been the most exhausting thing
Small DC motors nowadays are made like garbage
I'm getting samples from different manufacturers and they have crappy bushings
Bad tolerances
Subpar performance
Some of their "high quality samples" also came with rust and their recommendation was to run it by hand to clear the rust and then feed the 6vdc motor 12vdc to free it up
Why is it so hard to find quality DC motors

I might start rewinding motors again
Or make them myself
sanyodenki has some nice ones... you wont like the price though. :x
I have to buy like
100 at least
So maybe they'll do a bulk discount
Anything on digikey that might be acceptable? They'll do bulk discounts.
Do they have small DC motors
sanyo makes all sorts of dc, fans, brushless, etc. ive only bought their ac servos, and they are brutal
$1000s
oh they must have been in that really expensive fan on a stick thing from last year?
or was that a lamp? can't remember.
?
I mean the original motors are Sanyo DC motors
i think the monster crazy hurricane fan they had on ltt was sanyo
hm
ah
Mabuchi does a 5000 minimum to make new ones
The most I'll ever need is 500
The most
hmm
nvm it was a lamp <#help-with-hw-design message>
what type of motors are there. just the basic stamped steel canned brush dc?
Hold on
actually it's kind of funny the motors you're talking about are more expensive than that ridiculously expensive dyson lamp.
This is the datasheet by one
It's the same part number for mabuchi
Now the original Sanyo motor j have the part number but there is no datasheet
This is the closest equivalent I can find
Only issue is the bolt spacing is too big
The top one is the biggest issue
0.23w. feel the poweeer
The bottom one I can butcher one in by doing unholy things with a mill to some countersink Allen bolts
Yeah I normally work with
AC synchronous motors
2000hp sometimes
370 is a common rc size from the 80s
but they kinda went awat
Which is why the only replacements i find are
i assume you cant use a brushless?
I can use anything
theres lots of $5 brushless 370 size motors
Where
with bearings, aluminium housings,
Plug me in
hobby king is where i ge that typoe of thing
set rpm to whatever you want. truck will be what torque and voltaGE
rc specs are sorta upside down vs the normal torque.rpm ratings of an industrial motor. so you need to figure out some specw first
whats the voltage?
first one i found. this is a higher preformance 120w motor
(120w is peak current draw, so in real terms, its about 20-25w
Thank you this has been very helpful @rapid geode
