It does have free tier I think\

raw jasper
#

Yeah, it does. I guess if I don't hear any other suggestions, and it's good, I could give them $8/mo for however long I'll need it

#

thanks!

torpid jungle
#

Sorry for late reply to this, but quo k confirmation: 3.3V would also work right? We have clearly lower resistance than in 1.8V, albeit not as good as with 5V (not that significant in real world) but still quite low? Or have I understood the graph and specs wrong? (just double checking that did I learn the logic right)

#

Who needs money when you have electronic dev boards

raw jasper
#

BTW, nice professional packaging

tardy badger
#

Thanks 🙂

raw jasper
#

I think my external ssd has a bad usb-c cable

#

It keeps disconnecting if I move the device

#

Guess I'll buy a new one on Monday

tardy badger
#

Indeed

#

If I can sell those boards in my hand, that would be like $400+ towards new stock and products

#

Which would be a big jump for me

raw jasper
#

Without cheating, can you guess what this login page is for? :P

tardy badger
#

Baidu?

#

Lol

raw jasper
#

Nah, that'd be Chinese

#

This is a Japanese website

tardy badger
#

Is that katikana?

raw jasper
#

There's some katakana, some hiragana and some kanji

#

||It's a dictionary/web translation base||

#

||It's called Eijirou, which means "son of English dictionary"||

tardy badger
#

Ah okay, I’m still early in my Japanese learning

raw jasper
#

It also helps if you actually sit down and learn to write them.

tardy badger
#

I’m using Duolingo currently

raw jasper
#

There are too many kanji for me to have the time to learn to write them though

#

Duolingo is good for seeing if a language is a good fit for you

tardy badger
#

Hoping to have more time to dedicate as my schedule changes a bit in mid august

raw jasper
#

Less good to actually learn it :P

tardy badger
#

I know a few words and phrases and and doing okay at recognizing harigana

#

It meets my needs currently which is bite sized chunks in the evening

raw jasper
#

here's some more Japanese web design. This one's a web portal

tardy badger
#

It’s an aesthetic that more US sites need

raw jasper
#

Not really being into anime, they remind me of how the web looked in the web1.0 era

tardy badger
#

Early web look was just so classic and blocky

#

I have a love hate relationship with modern UI/UX

olive dome
tardy badger
tardy badger
#

Yeah, it’s not a lot but in terms of references to actual electronics it’s made a few appearances

raw jasper
#

There was this tumblr that collected screengrabs of floppy disks featured in anime

tardy badger
#

Arduino Uno also has appeared in a few games

raw jasper
#

I had an arduino uno with the usb type-b port

#

The huge one

tardy badger
#

I have had a few nano clones

rapid geode
#

i want an ice cream clone

#

err, cone

#

you should 3d print your smart watch case in stainless steel

#

ha

rapid geode
#

mmmmm

#

low grade flag ice cream in a bucket

raw jasper
#

"flag ice cream" 😅

#

You murdered it haha

rapid geode
#

hehe

#

this will need some testing before im willing to use it on a real bike. ha

raw jasper
#

this looks like a futuristic knee prosthesis

rapid geode
#

ha

#

hydraulic/electronic brake lever

raw jasper
#

I haven't used a bike since I was a child

rapid geode
#

thats not my fault

#

:P:

raw jasper
#

I mean, obviously

#

Unless you are secretly a bike god or something :P

umbral phoenix
#

Just picked up the wifi SSID of a business jet, over a mile away, and over a mile in altitude, cruising at a tangent to my position at almost 200 mph. That's a pretty serious wifi signal.

valid marsh
#

why stainless steel for a watch?

#

go classic. Print in plastic resin, use that to make a cast in silver

#

I'd say gold, but silver is expensive. Gold is ridiculous

umbral phoenix
#

Are airplanes allowed to use a higher wifi signal strength than land-based access points?

crystal ore
#

I wouldn't think so. It's all short range and inside a metal tube to boot.

tardy badger
#

Wi-Fi in planes sucks because it happens to use a few channels for flight radar 😛

#

Also SWAP requirements to support 100+ persons on a plane. Also airlines are cheap and don’t like upgrading unless necessary

rapid geode
umbral phoenix
#

"Supports Wi-Fi® for ground data transfers" ...surely they mean when it's on the ground (or as a gateway)

rapid geode
#

is on squirrel guard

tardy badger
#

Nice corn

rapid geode
#

theres about 25. 6=8 maybe ready to eat next week

#

did pretty well for not knowing what im doing 😛

tardy badger
#

Hehe

rapid geode
#

next year if i can stop them form eating the seeds ill have 50 or so plans, and 100 ish ears. these average 2 per plant

tardy badger
#

That’s not too bad of a yield

#

I’m trying to figure out getting mine to grow to full height of 2m tall

#

That’s a problem for next year

#

Mine tapped out at 1m tall

#

Maybe 1.3m

rapid geode
#

mine are short yeah. 4-5 ft. google says low nitorgen, and the weird weather.

tardy badger
#

Yeah, I figured it needed more fertilizer to grow bigger

rapid geode
#

a lot of my lettuices didnt form heads either. and my garlic didnt make individual cloves.

#

and my brocoli went straight to flowers

tardy badger
#

We got quite a bit of stuff surprisingly but the corn definitely should have been bigger. Money is a bit tighter this year so i opted for neem oil for pest control

#

Saw my first eggplant bloom today which makes me excited

rapid geode
#

nice. overall my garden has done very well. more lettuce than i can eat. i need to stagger them next time. plant 4 every week so they dont all get full size the same time

late fulcrum
#

My asparagus bolted. But I found a volunteer tomato plant next to my lime tree. I decided to leave it be and see what sort of tomatoes it produces.

tardy badger
#

Also lots of squash coming in. My first bounty of pumpkins will be picked tomorrow

rapid geode
#

when i clear more space in the back yard i want to try grafting tomatos to potatoes.

#

my peanuts are still growing. no idea what to expect. a squirrel dropped a peanut in the bed and it just sprouted.

#

so i left it

tardy badger
#

Hehe

tardy badger
#

finally, with the help of my brother I was able to get my website back up

#

or.. it should anyway. might be a bit slow

#

Looks like redirects break the forwarding. Meh…

rapid geode
#

dead

#

how am i supposed top buy all ur stuff?

#

hehe

tardy badger
#

Lol

torpid jungle
#

Man, I hate when you work with some PCB design and you end up getting more and more ideas how to do things differently or implement new stuff kek

valid marsh
craggy crag
#

nothing is been displayed on the screen, just blank

tardy badger
#

Morning harvest

#

The bigger zucchini squash is well over 30cm long

#

Probably closer to 40cm

rapid geode
valid marsh
#

depending ont he size of cast obviously but i cast silver quite often and believe me, it doesn't cost me $200 to cast stuff

rapid geode
#

that's the price from shapeways.

#

i dont know of another wax print source.

tardy badger
#

Cost of materials != the total cost from on demand manufacturing

rapid geode
#

yeah

tardy badger
#

Personally, I’m okay with markup for people with better tools than me

rapid geode
#

the wax pritns alone are quite expensive

torpid jungle
#

God these RJ11 connectors can be... annoying

tardy badger
#

Gonna make aluminum jewelry muahahaha

rapid geode
#

does the resin really burn out well? link?

tardy badger
#

I still need a forge to actually melt metals

#

It’s technically a wax resin

rapid geode
#

i saw some sla processes where they make a honecomb structure so the print doesnt expand and crack the mold

valid marsh
#

i tend to do delft-=clay casting

#

(it's a type of sand casting)

#

I don't have teh kiln needed for burning out a lost-wax/lost-resin cast so I have to cast in delft clay.

tardy badger
#

Lost casting is also a type of sand casting

rapid geode
#

"lost wax" traditionally means an investment cast where the wax is melted out with steam.

valid marsh
#

no; sand casting uses a loose oil-based sand where you press the master into the sand to form an impression, remove it and then fill the void...lost-wax, you use a liquid plaster qhich hardens, then you burn out the wax/resin master

tardy badger
#

Yeah

rapid geode
#

this was lost wax.

valid marsh
#

you don't melt out teh wax. that wouldn't work. You have to burn it out for 4-5 hours, sadly...

tardy badger
#

You can also do lost wax with direct pour, but the quality isn’t as great

valid marsh
#

if it was just melting, I could do it here. It needs to burnout, which means 500C for about 4-6 hours

#

that said, as long as you don't have any under-cuts, you can get pretty high detail levels with delft clay

rapid geode
#

well thats the trick. the core melts out, then skin burns. thats the issues with prints. if they cant melt, they will expand and ruin the mold. so you need to be clever with the design.

valid marsh
#

fior example

rapid geode
#

ooh nice

valid marsh
#

detail shot

#

that's only 64mm wide; the detail level there is about 0.2-0.4 mm I'd say

rapid geode
#

we had a zinc/pewter spin caster for a bit. never had a press to make moulds though so got rid of it

valid marsh
#

and delft clay is easy to cast with - if you want your thing in silver, all you need is a casting ring, a blowtorch, a melting pot (porcelain ones, about £5), and some delf clay

#

and some silver.

rapid geode
tardy badger
#

Nope, there is stuff that can melt out though

valid marsh
#

if you're just doing sand/delft clay, you don't need to brnout so you can use hig-res regular resin. I use Anycuibic Craftsman

tardy badger
#

It’s just really expensive

rapid geode
#

ah

#

i dont like expensive

#

😛

#

hah

tardy badger
#

Same haha

valid marsh
#

the nova3d stuff is good for burnout casting tho

rapid geode
#

also fragile if i remember. shapeways originally was selling the prints but had to stop.

valid marsh
#

yeah, tehy're brittle af

#

ideally for lost resin, you take it out teh printer, cure/remove supports then put it straight in the investment

#

lost resin/wax is a Process tho

rapid geode
#

the glass skull was a nightmare. the wazes were kept in the fridge, then one day the power weet out and 3 or 4 waxes were ruined

#

😦

valid marsh
#

you need a kiln to burnout; they're a lot to run, a lot to buy and big so you need space. Then you need a melting kiln for your metal...you need to get the temp just right or you'll get porsity, especially for sterling silver or lower carat gold

rapid geode
#

thats the easy part

valid marsh
#

then you need a casting machine - either a vacuum caster (which is good, cos then you can de-gas the investment before you set it, which is good idea), or a spincaster, which are scary af

#

it's a Process, and an expensive one at that

#

hence, my workshp is in my lounge (need to build a shed), so I have delft clay.

rapid geode
#

our spind caster was for rtv. so not so scary. the ones that swing flasks.. no thanks.

valid marsh
#

yeah, tehy're scary

#

here's a 500+ degree flask...we're gonna spin it around at 30 m/s, whilst pouring red hot molten gold itno it...

rapid geode
#

i looked at an all in one vac system with induction melting. way too much money.

valid marsh
#

yeah they cost a ton

#

uncessecary tho

rapid geode
#

well, they are helpful for production. one off you can do almost anything

valid marsh
#

you need a vacuum casting machine (really, it's just a vacuum pump with a secondary reservoir so the heat doesn't burn it out), they're about £1000, then a burnout kiln (about £300) and a melting kiln (about £150). I could afford it, I just don't have the space

glad ruin
rapid geode
#

i can only afford expensive tools. cheap ones cost too much

tardy badger
#

Part of me wants to do casting to make a new wedding band for my wife

#

I just need like.. maybe half an oz of gold shot

valid marsh
#

or rather, my other half is tolerant cos she lets me melt silver on the kitchen worksurface and use my dremel in the living room to make jewellery but she draws the line at a kiln

rapid geode
valid marsh
#

10 or so grams for the ring itself (depending on design obv) but the rest to make sure the mould fills

tardy badger
#

I’m talking about a thin band

#

But maybe an oz to be safe

rapid geode
valid marsh
#

if it's just a plain band, you might be better getting pre-made strip and soldering it into a ring

valid marsh
tardy badger
#

It looks like I can buy preblended alloy for a decent price

rapid geode
#

returned it to the guy that left it there. but i did that math ata it was about $16000 at the time.

valid marsh
#

well, maybe not retire but yeah, about £20k

rapid geode
#

it was intended for the vacuum caster. but the guy had a mental heath disaster and had to leave.

valid marsh
#

you in the UK?

tardy badger
#

I’m in the US

valid marsh
#

ah, then my sources won't be great

rapid geode
#

the granules are in preset "karats" i think. 14/18/22 etc

valid marsh
#

b ut I know from my us fireds you wanna try riogrande

rapid geode
#

riogrande is way overpriced usually

tardy badger
#

I’ll just go panning for gold

dusty citrus
#

Does exist like an all in shop like digikey or reference like mcmastercar (although it has a pricey shop) for motors?

tardy badger
#

Lol

valid marsh
#

can't use panned gold to make jewellery usually...

rapid geode
#

do a codys lab and recycles all your old electronics

valid marsh
#

needs refined first.

rapid geode
#

yes, thats what nile red videos are for

#

😛

#

JLCPCB needs to offer titanium prints for cheap.

valid marsh
#

i haven't tried jlc for prints

#

I keep seeing it for stuff when I go to buy a new pcb

rapid geode
#

they do stainless (hence the start of this discussion) for super cheap. i got some parts and they are awesome

tardy badger
#

I do have a pan for doing gold panning lol

valid marsh
#

my 3d printed joystick project continues at pace...once I've got it finished design wise, I'll prbably spring for a professional print or 5 innylon/stainless

rapid geode
#

but stainless is too heavy for some things i need to make. i want ti

#

(printed aluminium is not good for structural apps)

valid marsh
#

nylon if it's structural..

#

its pretty strong

#

lol, i keep getting auto-modded cos this server is american and doesn't like any of my language ;D

rapid geode
#

yes. sls nylong is nice. slightly brittles vs molded or FDM.

#

i need a mix of nylon and metal for my things

valid marsh
#

apparently, the word that is also used to describe a thing that stops water is banned, as are various anglo-saxon descriptors for excrement.

rapid geode
#

O_o

valid marsh
#

speaking of, I've been sitting charting on dsicord when my print is ready to go start...back in 5

rapid geode
#

water proof?

valid marsh
#

(a large concrete thing that is used to hold back water)

rapid geode
#

dam?

valid marsh
#

oh, didn't know if the ai things of that..

#

but if you add an n to that it bans it

#

and I didn't want to ban-avoid

rapid geode
#

well thats a different word

valid marsh
#

americans seem very puritan for swearing...

rapid geode
#

no, the censorbot is rogue here. hah. but also there are a surprising amount of kids on this server

valid marsh
#

i've noticed it a lot on the web.. "no cussin"..didn't even know what "cuss" meant till I started using the net lol.

#

that's waht I mean...kids using dsicord know about swearing lol.

rapid geode
#

ha

#

kids using discord know a lot more than their parents

torpid jungle
#

Uhm, does anyone have recommendations for 4 pin locking connector that has a 90 degree angle PCB header available? Molex has some but man are they out of the price range of this project.

valid marsh
#

americans get all bent out of shape about it, other places tend to give less fo a s...about swearing...

#

FA: jst

rapid geode
#

stemma type jst yeah.

torpid jungle
# valid marsh FA: jst

JST is one option but I had one in prior build and it's not that great if there's stress coming hidethepain

valid marsh
#

if you google 90 degree JST-PH or whatever size you need youll find plenty

rapid geode
#

ah

#

usb

torpid jungle
#

Previous version of my design had ones but the cables did not have stress relief and...

#

Yep

valid marsh
#

no connectors will be. Wire-stress isn't something you should be putting on a connector, cos it's only as good as the crimp etc

torpid jungle
#

RJ10 is one option but man is it hard to get 23AWG to it kek

rapid geode
#

usb c and sharpie it red

valid marsh
#

hot glue the cable.

rapid geode
#

😛

torpid jungle
#

Unless someone has really good tips for RJ10

valid marsh
#

honestly, that's the solution. Epoxy or hot glue the wires, use regular connectors.

rapid geode
#

rj needs to die

#

😛

#

it should be labeled "not for new designs, what is wrong with you?"

torpid jungle
#

I think I'll just get some flat 4 pole wire, push that to the RJ10, then solder the main leads to that.

valid marsh
#

if you open up anything where there's wire-stress, you'll not find expensive connectors with screws etc (well, sometimes you might), usually you'll just see a glob of epoxy

torpid jungle
#

Not pretty but atleast that works

rapid geode
#

i need a 4 pin micro locking waterproof connector actually.

torpid jungle
glad ruin
rapid geode
#

haha

valid marsh
#

hah, submariners once they've qualfiied, actually 😄 my client wanted his cheap, navy issued gold-plated tin ones made into 18k gold

#

dude was nuts, teh gold alone cost £1000

glad ruin
#

He's been underwater too long.

valid marsh
#

yep

#

combination of bad air, bad food and bad whisky for 27 years

rapid geode
#

the thigns people pay for baffle me.

valid marsh
#

but he was paying so I make its...

#

i can see some sense to it...the submariner course is not an easy one. Failure rate is like 90%+ I thnk. It's arduous and intense, and he'd passed then served 27 years

#

so the badge means lot to those guys...and he was nearing retirement so he wanted to get his badge done properly as an heirloom for his kids to pass down

rapid geode
#

still, it's a trinket, and a fake one at that.

valid marsh
#

a solid gold one tho

#

it won't lose value at least.

#

i cut him a good deal on the making price, so it's probably already worth more now gram for gram

#

(it was 2+ years ago)

dusty citrus
rapid geode
#

haha, yes

#

i need those customers

#

all mine want my $5 items fort half price

valid marsh
#

yeah there's no value in that

#

make stuff in gold and silver

#

liek this thing:

rapid geode
#

lead crystal used to do well, but has died out in the last 15-20 years.

valid marsh
#

oops, wrong one lol.

dusty citrus
valid marsh
#

but yah, that mjolnir...£6 worth of silver, sold it for £40

#

and that's "cheap". I coulda held out for £65-70 and still made a sale

rapid geode
#

6 silver, and 100 labour, sold for 40.

#

😛

valid marsh
#

nah, i made 5 in an afternoon

#

if I could lost-resin them, I could make 30-40 in the same time tbh

rapid geode
#

that was the issue with the glass. those skulls were 3k each for 7, and i think peter technically lost money.

valid marsh
#

yep, you gotta factor in time. End of the day, that's the most valuable thing we have cos money comes and goes, but you only get so much time..

rapid geode
#

😛

valid marsh
#

i'd say about an hour's time for each...maybe a little more..so selling them as a hobby/side hustle, £30 an hour isn't bad

#

no, i really gota shove this print on

#

bbs

rapid geode
#

20/h is not worth waking up for. ha. sounds snobby i guess. but my time is better spent on other things.

#

like electrical wiring my house!

#

i guess it depends where you live too. it costs me $20 just for train to the office.

#

ha

#

anyhow

valid marsh
#

minimum wage here is like £12.50 i think

#

20-30 isn't too bad

rapid geode
#

unemployment is $12 here. not sure what that is in pounds. 9?

#

but i think it also cost a lot more in the uk

valid marsh
#

yeah our welfare system has been gutted over the last few years so it's not a great comparator

#

median hourly wage of all employees in UK is £16.90 but ovbviously there's a whole ton of people on the legal minimum cos the economy here has been pushed off a clif

#

but £20-30 an hour is pretty decent

#

certainly for a side-hustle/hobby

rapid geode
#

ah

#

i want to just sell cad files and not have to do recurring work. haha. seems to be viable if you find the right niche.

valid marsh
#

my regular low/mid level admin job that I do 21 hours a week pays about £18

#

(i have another role I get about the same money for with lower hours, so it pays more)

#

then I have my side hustle making gold and silder for people

#

i'm nto rich or poor, i'm somewhere near the median i tihnk

rapid geode
#

median here is 70k. 35/h. hmmm. so a little higher, but not a lot. our houses are $1000000 though. sigh.

#

cant win

#

haha

tardy badger
#

Minimum wage in the US at least federally is $7.25 🙂

rapid geode
#

but do people make that?

#

min wage in the uis is weird

tardy badger
#

Some people do, yes

rapid geode
#

here its 15/h

#

which is what say, walmart will pay

tardy badger
#

Some states have minimum wages of $10+

glad ruin
#

Minimum wage in 🇺🇸 is heavily state-dependent, and even city-dependent.

tardy badger
#

Some have minimum wages over $15

#

Utah where I am for instance has its minimum wage tied to the federal minimum of $7.25

rapid geode
#

i prefer to use walmart as a benchmark. generic low skilled job "always" available. basicaly what they pay sets the benchmark in the area.

#

and not really gov's min wage

tardy badger
#

I of course make.. roughly 7.25x the $7.25 minimum wage 😛

rapid geode
#

ha

#

i make upwards of 6 pumpkin pies an hour

tardy badger
#

I am also a L2 software engineer

glad ruin
#

It's loosely (maybe not so loosely) proportional to how conservative the state government is. Utah is one of the more conservative states.

tardy badger
#

Yep

#

Wyoming I think is $5.25/hr?

#

Looks like it was raised to $7.25

umbral phoenix
#

those kinds of things should always be pegged to inflation

rapid geode
#

its more complicated though. many of the low wages (kansas was $2.35) are to do with service jobs where tips are made etc. but i think some states just generally dont want a min wage at all

tardy badger
#

Lots of places around where I live though tend to pay $12+ per hour for retail and food service

#

The Costco near me starts at $20/hr

#

Walmart pays $13.50 starting, meanwhile the Del Taco pays $20/hr for overnight staff

rapid geode
#

walmart in utah pays $12 apparently. so thats your "real" min wage

#

oh, 13.50. googles lied to me 😛

tardy badger
#

Varies by locality

rapid geode
#

might be outdated too

tardy badger
#

Median household income in my community is like $107k/yr

rapid geode
#

ah

tardy badger
#

I make.. just barely over that.

rapid geode
#

poor guy

#

:x

tardy badger
#

Yeah

#

Real poverty here 😛

rapid geode
#

actually that the sad thing. thats quite well off.. or SHOULD be, but everything is so weird right now

tardy badger
#

It’s actually pretty financially rough right now

#

And will be even more so when my federal loans kick in 🥲

#

My job pays overtime worked, but there has to be work available to do overtime on which is mostly hit and miss

rapid geode
#

obviously in relative terms. you're not at food banks. but when your house costs half that, and food is going up, you are kinda at more risk to fail than some poorer people

tardy badger
#

We were getting help for food for a few months until the state started checking income after pandemic measures ended

rapid geode
#

ah

tardy badger
#

Food costs are coming down a bit

#

But still pretty high from where they were 2 years ago

rapid geode
#

food is up and down here. pork is finally coming down. chicken a bit. cheese keeps going up

#

but my salads are free

#

so..

#

haha

tardy badger
#

The garden helps supplement what we can’t afford in fresh vegetables which is nice because it only costs $30 a month for the three beds we keep

#

Which we get probably close to $70-100 a month in vegetable over the summer

rapid geode
#

my gardens cost me... $50 or so for seeds and seedlings. and a little bit of water (mostly they get rain). for the basil alone, thats a good deal. saves $8 a week on lettuce. its not bad.

tardy badger
#

Yeah

rapid geode
#

and my house doesnt cost any more than renting my condo did, so i consider the "land" free. ha.

tardy badger
#

Lol

rapid geode
#

ha

tardy badger
#

I couldn’t buy a house for what I pay for rent

rapid geode
#

you cant anymore here. my house is almost double now what i paid

tardy badger
#

I pay just shy of $2400 a month

rapid geode
#

my mortgage in usd is 1100

tardy badger
#

I couldn’t buy the same amount of space for $2400 a month

rapid geode
#

err, 1200 (biweekly thing). plus taxes and inbsurance and power

But I also can’t save up to buy a house so 🤷‍♂️

#

I pay my rent in chunks

#

It’s easier on the budget that way

rapid geode
#

O_o

#

as in every 6 months? or ever 2 weeks?

#

my moms cousin was paying rent by the year. which i found very weird

#

but it was like $5k for the year. so

tardy badger
#

Every 2 weeks

rapid geode
#

ah ok. yeah thats how i apy mortgage. easier cause it lines up with pay

tardy badger
#

At this rate I will retire in 40 years

rapid geode
#

hahaha

#

im a bit messed up right now, but "normally" i can save 2k/m. (i dont, i buy cnc's and printers instead, but i COULD) hahha. but i need to asssign that to paying down the mortgage more.

tardy badger
#

I’m up 12% this year, 9% over the last 12 months

Well, supposedly

rapid geode

i know so little about that stuff, id lose everything

i would buy based on how much money i thought the company would make. and clearly thats got nothing to do with stock value.

hahaha

tardy badger

Yeah, it’s all based on sentiment

raw jasper

So much scrollback

*waves*

rapid geode
#

ok, that is one i should have done. in 2000 ish my friend were invensting in some stuff, and i said, buy nvidia at $4, they make stuff people want. within a year is went up 5x and is now 100x more

raw jasper
#

I wouldn't know. I don't do the stonks stuff

rapid geode
#

yeah me neither. that is just one i managed to predict correctly.

valid marsh
#

I have 2 jobs (and my side hustle), and partner is dsiabled but gets welfare for that; between us we make about £41k a year after tax, which puts us in the 7th decile (ie, better off than 60%)

rapid geode
#

ha

valid marsh
#

i ahve about £20k in savings, and I don't know waht I'm supposed to do with it

tardy badger
#

I did well investing during the pandemic

tardy badger
#

Took stimulus check and put like $400 and turned it into like $1800

valid marsh
#

it's just sitting in my regular bank account, not even a savings one, I know that's not the best but I dunno what you're suposed to do..investment sounds risky, I have no idea what the right or wrong things to do etc

tardy badger
#

But I don’t have the resources to play in the stonks

valid marsh
#

well, yeah but how

raw jasper
#

Aren't "savings bank accounts" not insured?

#

(Essentially a way to tell your bank "it's OK to do risky stuff with my money"?)

rapid geode
#

how? just in the bank. investing is for some "free" money. not money you actually need

tardy badger
#

Check/savings accounts in the US are FDIC insured

raw jasper
#

Maybe I'm getting lost in translation somewhere haha

patent hemlock
#

depends on the bank - if in the US, almost all accounts are FDIC insured up to a certain amount

valid marsh
#

cos i know that interest on a regualr account is rubbish, but then there's ISA's (govt backed interest accounts), then there's stocks ISAs, regualr stocks/shares investing, or making largeer mortgage payments (which isn't saving I guess but saves money in long run since you'll pay less interst) etc et

rapid geode
#

savings accounts dont really exist like they used to here. you get like 1 cent interest on 100k so its pointless.

patent hemlock
#

just a simple savings acount will do wonders when you need it

raw jasper
valid marsh
#

yeah here it's all insured unless you do full on stocks/shares investing yourself..then it's on you

patent hemlock
#

the idea is not to play interest games, but to just accumulate in case of retirement/emergency/etc.

rapid geode
#

you could invenst in my start up company. its a new concept in investment. i take the money and then move to mexico and change my name

tardy badger
#

US bank accounts make the banks more money than the account holder

tardy badger
#

Saving money in a savings account here is a losing move

raw jasper
#

Sounds like all bank accounts ever lol

rapid geode
patent hemlock
#

too late - i'm already took yours

valid marsh
#

i know it is here..inflation is running higher than interst on my acount so I'm losing money effectively but I honestly don't know waht you're supposed to do with it all

rapid geode
#

gasp!

valid marsh

so I just leave it alone

Great trick! Because no other normal program uses F13-F24. so you can use them for shortcuts without having anoying combinations or clashes when multiple programs use the same shortcut.

raw jasper

ha! One day you say this, and another you get the call of the void and start working with IBM mainframes, which use F13-F24

fossil dawn

tranquil swallow
fossil dawn

Only things that kinda annoy me are just that it doesn't have any reprogrammable firmware like QMK. And for that price (and the gimmick of all-black caps) I would expect all keycaps to have the same shade of black. 😆 Depending on the light it's really obvious that the bottom 2 rows, the spacebar, and the rest have 3 different colours

tardy badger
#

dang, I've got quite a bit of inventory on my shop

#

well, a bit for me anyway.

#

$692 worth of inventory

raw jasper
#

hope they sell out quickly!

tardy badger
#

just need to sell it all :3

#

I've been adding stuff to my website's shop to try and add other means of ordering

#

plus it's easier to do shipping from my web shop than Tindie

#

so I can offer more places to ship.

#

If I can get regular sales I can open up more areas to ship with auto calculated shipping prices at checkout.

#

baby steps

raw jasper
#

On another note, I've been playing shenzhen i/o lately. Surprised by what you can do with a 13 instructions deep memory

#

(it's a "fantasy microcontroller" game thing)

rapid geode
#

ha. i can 3d print resin packaging for my keyboard keys cheaper than i can get cardboard boxes and foam. sigh.

raw jasper
#

packaging is hard

rapid geode
#

yeah. unless you want many thousands its is too expensive

tardy badger
#

I tend to buy padded envelopes for like.. $0.09 a piece

#

but I have no issues shipping that way because my stuff is smol

rapid geode
#

but thats $1.36 for 4 trays. 34 cents each. the stainless stems are also $1.36 for a set of 4. wood is basically pennies. so about $2 "cost". a lot of labour. and then an outer cardboard box

#

actually, envelope might work best if i print a cover for the keys. basically printed hard case, plus envelope

#

envelopes are about $2

#

for this size (small)

tardy badger
#

my envelopes are 6in x 10in

rapid geode
#

im gonna so some WASD sets, and some esc keys in various wood, and basically see what happens. spend $100 and see how many i get. Probably 20-30 individual keys which in theory sell for $20-$30 each.

#

hmm. if i could make that in one day. that;s a decent "job". no idea how long it will teake to sell, that is a different matter hahah

tardy badger
#

selling is definitely harder than making things.. that's for sure

rapid geode
#

nice key caps do sell well. but 20 a day, unlikely. 20 a month maybe

#

one way to find out

tardy badger
#

custom resin key caps can cost like... $250+

rapid geode
#

custom yes

tardy badger
#

especially ones that are like miniature scenes from games

#

those are so cool. I'll eventually have a cool keyboard like that

rapid geode
#

im doing cnc wood. they seem to be in the 50/ set of 4 range

#

but i have the stainless stem, so i can have a little leverage on price

#

cause mine wont break or be lop sided

#

im not great at scuplting in 3d so the miniature style resons ones are not my game

#

but other people can buy my stainless stems for their resin keys

#

so they will last longer

#

resin keys are all too weak on the stems

tardy badger
#

yeah, very true.

rapid geode
#

so i can order 100 stems for $32, and enough packaging prints for them for another $16 (2:1 basically). a bit of small wood scraps from the local store. some envelopes. So i guess ill make 100 caps.

#

the next questions is, how to do the lettering.

#

i can engrave and fill with black or white epoxy resin

#

but thats a bit meh

#

i could inlay brass

#

or copper

#

or stainless.

#

hmm

fossil dawn
tranquil swallow
#

Gold leaf then epoxy

rapid geode
#

gold and silver or copper leaf. yes. i like that.

#

paint a little sizing, then leaf, then epoxy. let dry and re cnc the top surface

#

will have to see how fussy that is

#

it creates extra operations.

#

metal inlays will be tricky. ive done them before and they heat up and melt the glues, expand, then shrink. not ideal

#

but they do look slick

#

ive seen epoxy with metal powders

fossil dawn
#

i don't know how realistic this is, but different kinds of wood? Like dark wood keycap, light wood letter

rapid geode
#

too fine, the inlays will break. ive done fine inlays for guitars, it is too fussy

fossil dawn
#

😭

#

i kinda expected that tbh

rapid geode
#

like thats a job you charge $1000 for on a guitar, haha

#

(google image not mine)

#

but even there they cheat. they engrave and backfill with blak epoxy

tranquil swallow
#

I kinda hate inlays on guitars because they're usually cutting up holes on wood from endangered trees that were illegally smuggled internationally

rapid geode
#

ha

#

not exactly

#

most wood youll see is legit, but the issue is being tracable. i have some brazilllian rosewood that i know is legal, its long before the bans. but i cant prove it, so i cant make anything with it to sell.

#

likewise i have some lignum vitae. but also cant sell anything with it. they would make sweet key caps actually, self waxes. but you cant glue anything to it either for the same reasosn

raw jasper
#

I just went to the guitar shop and got the guitar that suited me best

#

Didn't really care about fancy woods. Even better knowing they might be from endangered species

rapid geode
#

most guitars are made from pandas

#

:x

raw jasper
#

endangered trees are a thing too

rapid geode
#

panda trees

raw jasper
#

fun fact:

#

Pando (Latin for "I spread") is a clonal organism representing an individual male quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). It was identified as a single living organism because its parts possess identical genetic markers and it is assumed to have a massive interconnected underground root system. The plant is located in the Fremont River Ranger Distr...

rapid geode
#

so im at about $7 cdn for a 4 pack of key caps. including the stems, wood, printed box, bubble pack, tax, shipping(of prints to me), etc.

#

plus a bunch of labour

#

can price them so i get $50 cdn per sale cash after etsy fees. $1250 if i manage to sell all of them.

#

a plausible business venture

#

ha

tardy badger
#

Indeed

rapid geode
#

need to design a mini box for single key. and then the wood tops and lettering. WASD/ESC to start. ill just add the rest as people order them. but the wasd and esc seem to be the main ones people buy. and also just blank.

tardy badger
#

I think I’m going to design a “lazy Susan” PCB assembly platform

#

Using a flanged bearing, a 20mm post, and some small neodymium magnets for creating stations

rapid geode
#

ooh, that sounds neat

tardy badger
#

And then 3D printing everything

rapid geode
#

so the parts are on the lazy susan, or the pcb stations?

tardy badger
#

The PCB is on the lazy Susan

rapid geode
#

cool

raw jasper
#

A "lazy Susan" is a spinning tray?!

rapid geode
#

then you just cycle through

raw jasper
#

Oh man, the English language

rapid geode
#

ha

tardy badger
#

By stations I mean that the magnets will help keep the top plate somewhat stationary

rapid geode
#

lazy susan was the brand name. a lot of american english words are like that, based of some original brand

tardy badger
#

So some subset of angles, maybe 30° rotation intervals

raw jasper
#

Like, what's lazy about it? And why not "lazy [INSERT_MALE_NAME_HERE]"?

tardy badger
#

🤷‍♂️

rapid geode
#

it went into a corner cabinet. it was a lazy (woman's) way for getting at things in the kitchen.

#

yay 50s usa

#

:x

raw jasper
#

<_<

tardy badger
rapid geode
#

this is why there is so much trouble now. so many words and terms are rooted in pretty horrible ideas.

raw jasper
#

I'll just keep on using "spinning tray"

raw jasper
rapid geode
#

well, those make "sense". it just happens we also have had (have) human slaves so its not too nice.

#

but there are some really terrible ones.

#

and then people try to fight you on them as if its something they need to protect? just no

raw jasper
#

Anyway, I figure we'll get yelled at by a mod if we keep this up, so, back to PCB assembly talk!

rapid geode
#

ha

#

yes

#

discussing the origins of english is a dark road

tardy badger
#

Anyway, it’ll be a spinning PCB assembly station which has magnets to create positions at 30° or something like that to make things steady

#

To go along with the pixel pump that I’ll eventually get 🙂

raw jasper
#

You could even sell it in your shop if everything works out

tardy badger
#

Oh sure

raw jasper
#

Just make sure not to call it a "lazy Susan"

rapid geode
#

so you have only one pcb on the turntable?

#

or one every 30 degrees

#

im trying to imagine it

#

ha

tardy badger
#

Okay the magnets get laid in the base and the free moving tray in a circle at 30° intervals

#

So if I rotate it, the magnets will catch and keep it in place

rapid geode
#

for indexing

tardy badger
#

Sort of yeah

#

Most just so I don’t have to worry about the turn table drifting while working on it

#

Some people might suggest doing planetary gears

#

But bearings will make it smoother

#

Maybe I could do a combination of planetary gears and bearings

#

Also in terms of lazy Susan, no one knows where the term originated but many scholars agree it very likely came about in the same manner as “Jolly Roger,” “peeping Tom,” and other phrases

#

Just my final bit after finishing an article about it 😛

rapid geode
#

so the indexing is just to get around the same board. not staging multiple boards

tardy badger
#

Right

#

One big board or panel at a time

rapid geode
#

cool

#

in my head i was thinking many little pico sized boards, cycling through them

tardy badger
#

I mean, that would be fascinating to do as well

#

I’m not sure I have the modeling chops to do that though lol

errant lava
#

Hi all! New to the server... I did a search for adabox as I'm a subscriber and it looks like the last "answered" question was back in May. I keep seeing the month update on adafruit.com but it still currently says July... should I have hope that it will stay July and a box will go out or will it be pushed? Thanks!!

raw jasper
#

The linux OOM killer got my prime95 test. Restarted it with a smaller memory allocation

tardy badger
#

It happens at random hacker hours, though usually like.. 9-10pm EST lately

raw jasper
#

"random hacker hours" 💀

raw jasper
tardy badger
#

I’m unsure what that is

raw jasper
#

It simulates high-stress numeric workloads, and you can adjust it to test the cpu + cache or the ram

tardy badger
#

Ah

#

Thanks for the clarification

raw jasper
#

I use it as an adjuvant to a memtest program, to stress the memory with more realistic patterns involving AVX etc

#

Because it needs linux to run, you won't be testing all the memory (typically you need to leave at least 100MB free for the oom killer not to freak out + it can't test memory used by the OS), hence its use as an adjuvant

raw jasper
#

It is used by a distributed computing program to help find primes, but it has a "torture test" mode, which I use

tardy badger
#

Oh neat

rapid geode
#

last tweaks and ready to print. im gonna do a sticker label to close the box which can have the product info on it

#

thats only 50 cents or so (x96)

tardy badger
#

Nice

#

Looks really good

rapid geode
#

i hope thgey dont get crushed in the mail. resin prints arent super strong

tardy badger
#

Maybe add a few cardboard pieces internally?

#

Like some ribbing

rapid geode
#

if i space them a liottle wider i can put a centre post

#

or maybe just do them all individual.

#

there, ribs and a centre post. now it can withstand a little force if its in a pile of packages. obviously you can smush it under big things.

tardy badger

FedEx will even yeet it on to customers roofs for ya

ebon dew
raw jasper
ebon dew
#

Because of Adam Savage's recommendation that's what I ended up going with for my ahem.. unfinished spinning tray.

#

FedEx is probably going to get a lot more business due to the strike?

#

Adafruit: "Due to the potential upcoming UPS strike we are unable to guarantee UPS delivery. UPS is currently a 'use at your own risk' service. We strongly recommend selecting an alternative shipping method when available."

#

I've always kind of considered FedEx as a use at your own risk service anyway so now they'll be kinda equal.

raw jasper
#

I've only ever had one package delivered to me via fedex (international shipping). Not a particularly fragile ware (single PCB), didn't have anything weird happen to me

ebon dew
#

It's just one of those things where there are a lot of doorbell style videos of FedEx employees yeeting packages more than UPS.

raw jasper
#

TBH, the package was probably delivered by a local partner

#

Doubt we have fedex offices over here

#

IDK though

ebon dew
#

UPS employees are always being watched more closely so I guess that forces them to provide better service? I dunno. Always having a camera in your face while working would be disconcerting. Too much big brother esque kind of thing.

#

or perhaps UPS has some kind of internal issue with drivers stealing or opening packages while in route so it keeps them honest, who knows.

#

I know they're forced to take a picture of the delivery at the door as proof but what's stopping them from taking the package after the picture? The camera in the truck making sure they're coming back empty handed. I could see how cameras pointing away from the truck could be useful but inside the truck? It ensures they're not opening packages and delivering empty boxes.

raw jasper
#

I had no idea couriers are under so much monitoring (presumably) in the US

ebon dew
#

yeah that's why they say they're about to go on strike, they don't like a lot of their working conditions.

#

tampering with mail is a felony so if any of them are caught it's not just a slap on the wrist kind of crime.

tardy badger
#

One thing I appreciate about my basement work area is that while it’s nearing 40°C outside, it’s 20°C in the basement

raw jasper
#

Oof, I wish I had that basement right now

ebon dew
#

but i think it's more about the conditions for the female drivers as they don't have a place to take bathroom breaks, guys can drive off to an empty parking lot to relieve themselves. and being recorded while doing it doesn't sound fun.

#

yeah but aren't basements colder in the winter too?

tardy badger
#

Right now it’s 37.78°C or 100°F

raw jasper
tardy badger
#

Yeah, my basement is usually ~15°C in the winter

#

Well, 15-17°C

#

About 60-62°F

#

Which I enjoy

#

I like cold weather

ebon dew

Can't really have basements in most of Florida. Dig down 10 feet you'll hit water or an aquafer.

hm. bit extra money for transparent covers and they are more durable. adds about 10-15 cents pery key. i think ill try that.

tardy badger
#

Transparent resin?

rapid geode
#

yeah. i read wrong though, it is not as strong

#

they do have a cheaper resin too. saves 10 cents. im gonna stick with the default. i have some shapeways resin (jetted not sla) and it is surprisingly strong. so, this may all be fine

it is disposable anyway. it just needs to survive

Nah, just not enough nutrients and I think that the corn was a bit too densely together

Even though I spaced 9” spacing, 18” between rows

Lots of smöl off shoots came up with it

Desk of Ladyada - Piezo Booster & ESP32-S3 Metro https://youtu.be/3I22nt_kUG4

This week at my desk we did a ton of revision work, but we also had a little time to design two new boards. one is a piezo booster: we're still working on a project to figure out how we can make an open source library for sonar distance measurement without using sonar modules. to get these to detect far-off items you need to bounce a loud sonar ...

I'm confused
I have a windows pc with 3cx in it and about Ethernet ports
5 ips phones
2 switches and a firewall
I am supposed to connect the 3cx machine and the ip phones to the switch, or just the 3cx machine to the switch, and then the ip phones to the 3cx machine?

Bing A.I. does baisc coding pretty well, example i asked it to make a python function for Vapor pressure deficit (VPD). It did okay job. I think A.I. could be a usefully coding tool, even if you only use it to make formulas to functions

what's kinda fun/game-like is writing comments for unit testing and seeing how close it gets to following the description -- although, there is a learning curve: you have to figure out how to tell it exactly what you want (it is a program after all - GIGO)
