Juat saw the ISS go right overhead in central Texas. I waved, but I don't think they saw me...
you sure it is ISS and not aliens ?
Even then, there are dozens of variants (like the aforementioned AVX)
Originally, Intel released the 8008, which was already misnamed, it "should" have been 1301 or 1302, to follow their naming scheme at the time, but marketing had other ideas. It was packaged in a 18-pin DIP, as Intel didn't like the idea of large IC packages (they wanted to be all 0.3" DIP after they finally abandoned the TO-99 package).
I'm breadboarding one, Ben Eater style
I mean, but think about the lovely package for the 68000 in DIP Format.
I don't think I appreciated just how much pressure there was at the time to make smaller packages with fewer pins until I actually looked at the Texas Cockroach that is the 68000
Before that I was like "Why does the 65816 have to be so weird?"
new part adafruit could stock, mayhap? this roller encoder thing. looks very cool and I want it for projects lmao
https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMechKeyboards/comments/13z93zl/custom_design_service_at_ergomechstore
srsly tho how would I find such a part
oh lmao that wasn't hard
bit spenny tho
https://keebd.com/products/encoder-roller-with-push-switch
I don't know why you don't like Intel. I like ARM also but Intel is decent
Oh yes, the glorious DIP-64 package (AKA "the skateboard"). However, Intel didn't even want to go as far as a DIP-24, let alone that magnificent piece of engineering.
Back when there were four major architecture choices (Fairchild F-8, RCA 1802, the related Motorola 6800 and MOS 6502, and Intel's 8008), I considered Intel's offering to be the most flawed. By the time the PC came out, there were even better CPUs available (Z80 comes to mind), but IBM went with the 8088 for complicated political reasons, even though it was already apparent to the industry that it was slow and saddled with bizarre engineering choices. As Intel realized their processors couldn't compete on power or performance, they pushed clock speed (the "megahertz myth") instead. The dominance of the PC, and the backward X86 architecture in general, has held back computing an estimated 20 years at this point. I can understand why Intel hitched their wagon to X86 after the Itanic debacle, but I do not consider it "decent". At long last, they're trying to cast off at least some of the glaring design issues by ditching the early 8 bit design, along with the 16 and 32 bit add-ons, keeping just the 64-bit support https://cdrdv2.intel.com/v1/dl/getContent/776648. As discussed above, there aren't even any native X86 designs in use, they're all kind of emulated because there's no practical way to get even a reasonably performant implementation of that hoary old ISA directly.
@magic talon DM me if you'd like me to send you an invite to the Personal Robotics Discord
Imma anaolog guy in a digital world…. I build functional art… just lamps for now…my experience is in construction and I know basics in electrical. Eventually I would like to make smart devices and my own AI pet idk… #FunctionBeforeFashion
Imma go back to lurking N learning.. thanks
Whereas my art is more fun than functional
I bought one once, and accidentally broke it trying to get it into perfboard
This is pretty accurate. Also Intel pushed hard early on to be first to market, so by the time their competition rolled out better designs they already had customers invested in their ecosystem.
Decided to try and learn Japanese
Not the writing quite yet, but just whatever way duolingo does it
In this process of starting to learn, I’ve realized that Goku in Dragon Ball Z named his son “rice”
And also that every character is based on some food or other pun
Doing German with Duolingo, I'm not so sure the sentences are conversationally helpful
I generally think they are more to get you using German every day in general. It seems more advanced lessons will get into proper usage. But vocabulary is really important
Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeit
Germans are so uhhh why
I kinda want to learn Chinese just because of the punning potential.
I suck at languages, tho.
my language banks were given over to computers a long time ago
e.g. i've forgotten more programming languages than most people know
Probably a Gentoo user.. 😏
This reference is going over my head 😛
A common derogatory for Gentoo users is "Ricer!"
In reference to people who put pointless mods on cars, like "GO-FASTA!" stripes.
Ohh gotcha
The same kind of people who think FWD is a good platform. 😛
Remember the Duolingo bird? This is it now:
I noticed that Chattermax from the Bluey show looks like a very party centric duolingo bird
...and this, kids, is why you don't get into a freestyle diss rap battle with a bunch of German football fans. Look at what it did to the Duolingo bird.
I guess this shouldn't really surprise me but I'm actually really good at recalling the food words from languages tho. This led me to being in Barcelona and ordering off the menu like I knew the language (and therefore, them telling me about the special that we had to order) without actually having any real fluency in Spanish or Catalan.
Becuase I'm like "Oh, right, Gohan, yeah rice."
nice nice
You aren't having a meal without Gohan.
I'm hoping to travel to japan one day and I really want the experience to feel more authentic
I want to go to Japan and fill several suitcases with Gundam kits. 😄
I mean, I went to Japan when I was a little blonde second grader and that's probably a huge part of how I turned out the way I did.
This was while they were stoking xenophobia towards the Japanese in the popular media and so being there kinda immunized my brain.
I need to go back. It's on the vague provisional plan for next big international trip.
Tbh right now my ideal country would be something close to china, but not china or alike policies
They have an amazing market, but you can disappear overnight...
Yah, see, when I went there, Akihabara was what Shenzen is now.
I mean, I judge pretty much any country with capitol punishment, even if some implement it more unfairly than others
Hm yeah you're right, japan has it too I forgot about it
But, yah, the problem lately is that there's a whole bunch of travel bloggers who do ASMR videos of really neat places around East Asia and so I'm like "Welp, this would be fun" except that there's like a zillion neat places that there's an ASMR Video of and only so much time and money, LOL.
I personally would love just to spend a year or two traveling. staying at least a month in a few regions to experience them.
Although I did like japan for art stuff (comics, anime, dresses), but lately I don't know stuff is just boring repetitive, low cost, dunno if I just saw too much things, or if they shifted towards another market given the recent industry boom
Like, I'm taking a break from pottery becuase my left wrist got a little messed up but I want to visit the pottery places in Japan.
I'd love to visit a few of the artisan spots of japan to learn paper making, pottery, metal working...
Yeah, and in a lot of cases, there's some significant problems with the next generation picking it up, so it's kinda a case where you'd want to do it before it's gone.
Called my ISP to report a problem with a pole that needs immediate servicing. Utility company already switched wires onto the new pole, old pole about to fall over and is zip tied to the old pole with wire lol.
They're sending someone out np... the problem is after the call ended I lost internet and whoever I talked to flipped my router off and wouldn't come back on.
The problem with going to Japan is that all of the onions are always talking smack to me. Every time I have one, it's negi negi negi negi.
i own my router, they expected me to use theirs, so they set it so i'd have to.
comcast?
spent the morning without internet and reconfiguring half my network
yeah, at least it's fast though.
I get.. 800/15 from comcast. It’s.. okay
I enjoy random service outages from them doing work they claimed to have notified people about
on hand their new router has 802.11ax but on the other i'd have to run my whole network as a subnet of their dhcp
All of the onions?
Yeah, the onions are always negi me.
i feel like that's some kind of japanese pun joke
Yah, negi is a japanese onion.
Ah okay it’s a pun lol
no, just on a whole different level if you're making puns in other languages too
I mean... why learn things if you aren't using your newfound knowledge to make bad puns?
Lol
that joke was so bad i had to gomen sigh
now that's a funny japanese pun joke... well i tried. 😆
feels good to have internet again
I mean, I thought it just stunk.
Its actually impressive that the puns have comeidic timing. I am kinda jeleous
Teach me your ways mr wirehead
In the words of Whitey from Flushed Away, wirehead saw an opportunity and seized it.
I mean, basically you just annoy people until they decide it's funny?
(Also, we should note that I just hit the halfway mark where I've been married for half my life. Somehow my spouse puts up with my antics?)
You’re positive you’re not in a simulation? I’ve pondered the same thing. I’ve been with my wife for 9 years, married for 8
I mean, I have some positive attributes, too.
So do battery terminals 🙂 they’re very useful so I think you are too
Dummie question
car's command controls have a standardized sensibility of some kind or not?
Because the last time I was training to get a driving license I did a mess, I've found difficult to adapt to the car sensibility, and since lessons do costs and are expensive I was hoping to find/build some kind of simulator
They tend to be similar enough, although there are quirks. Some will have more sensitive brakes, some less, some have faster responding steering, or nonlinear ("D") steering. However, the basic experience is similar enough that the knowledge transfers and you quickly adapt (as you're part of the feedback loop, you just adjust your inputs to get the desired effect)
Quirks in a car can be dangerous. My grandpa used to drive a opel corcia at 270 km/hr on public roads because the odometer was increment by 30 instead of 10 normally. He used to drive 3x the speed he though he was driving until he learnt about the quirk.
I am honestly surprised that a opel can achive 270 in the first place
This will happen if you put egregiously wrong sized tires on the car. Like if you put a 14" tire on a wheel designed for 15" tires it can throw off your speedometer by quite a bit. The bigger the difference vs spec the more your speedometer will be off.
I had low profile tires once and my speedometer was consistently off by 10-15mph. I got many tickets because I literally didn't know how fast I was going.
Officer: "Do you know how fast you were going?" Me: "Honestly, no".

Hello. Looking at the following formulas and the instructions to compute them. I tried to understand where the factors 2, 262144 and 131072 came from but didn't understand. The simplified equation for the sector 5 is T/2 + (Y - Z)/2. But in the instruction I can see that it is T/4 + (Y - Z)/2 * 131072. Can someone explain me how they end up with that ?
int32_t wX;
int32_t wY;
int32_t wZ;
int32_t wUAlpha;
int32_t wUBeta;
int32_t wTimePhA;
int32_t wTimePhB;
int32_t wTimePhC;
wUAlpha = Valfa_beta.alpha * (int32_t)pHandle->hT_Sqrt3;
wUBeta = -(Valfa_beta.beta * ((int32_t)pHandle->PWMperiod)) * 2;
wX = wUBeta;
wY = (wUBeta + wUAlpha) / 2;
wZ = (wUBeta - wUAlpha) / 2;
/* Sector calculation from wX, wY, wZ */
if (wY < 0)
{
if (wZ < 0)
{
pHandle->Sector = SECTOR_5;
wTimePhA = (((int32_t)pHandle->PWMperiod) / 4) + ((wY - wZ) / (int32_t)262144);
wTimePhB = wTimePhA + (wZ / 131072);
wTimePhC = wTimePhA - (wY / 131072) ;
pHandle->lowDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhC;
pHandle->midDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhA;
pHandle->highDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhB;
}
I suspect the 2 comes from the fact that it's trying to make a pulse symmetric about a particular point, so half the pulse is before it and half after. 262144 is an even power of two (2¹⁸ or 0x40000), I'm guessing it's related to the number of bits in the counter. 131072 is half that or 2¹⁷.
Their omplementations are strange. I dont think they follow exactly the formulas in the screen I shared
I wonder if you can reuse PCNT in ESP32 to crude frequency counter
Let me guess, the main application is musical greeting cards?
(Also, this is some crazy Serious Business[TM]-looking hardware)
You should consider opening a blog to post all these niche Chinese microcontrollers
When your sick of beating your head, where's the hire a smart person in discord to help you with a project?
great news is you can get help for free here
depending on your project, there's a ton of great channels here
ah it's so painful..
#help-with-circuitpython if you're using Circuitpython
yha it's a io project
like Adafruit IO?
passing values from a dht22 & ina219 to feeds, I just can not get it to work
I can see the feeds are getting hit but the value is 0.0000
I do not get when I look at the console the values are there
don't get it 😦
yha ada io
okay, so #help-with-wippersnapper-and-adafruitio is a great place to start for help, I might have some ideas
Hi I'm having issues with getting an esp32 feather v2 to use I2C in arduino IDE. Which channel would be most appropriate to post in?
I accidentally deleted circut python files on rasperry pi pico and how to recover?
Do you mean your code files? Like code.py? No, not unless you backed them up on PC or elsewhere... as far as I know.
You can put it in bootloader mode and load the CircuitPython UF2 files to get CircuitPython back.
question if you buy a devboard and the supplier ignores all your questions, deletes their support email and goes silent...
what to do?
DON'T buy them as you can never get any support.. DONT BUY THEM no support email. no one answering any questions here. all they do is sell and forget.
This describes a vast majority of the cheap Alibaba stuff.
I only buy things that are well known in the community (and have community-maintained OSS to drive them) off aliexpress
well on top of this they distribute spyware with some of their flashers
That's true of western suppliers as well half the time.
Have you seen all the junk NI installs?
oof
so far i managed to toss together my own firmware
i think i'm missing a command to disable the mic to free up a i2c address for the sd card
brain hurting
🫣
if anyone can help
i would be really happy
wait, this is from sipeed?
yes
This is a third-party vendor integrating sipeed ICs, right?
m5 has their own variant ye
So, what's broken with yer board?
can't use sd card
sad :(
it worked then i updated the firmware
and it stopped
then i downgraded it
no luck
O_O'
Out of curiosity, what made you update the firmware?
it had a bug
🤣
i just want it to record video to the sd
using a pir detector or motion as the trigger
i should have just grabbed a esp32 cam module
Do you have a logic analyzer?
no
Oh. I was hoping you could probe the connections to the sd card, and see whether it's doing anything
||You can get one from aliexpress|| :P
i could use a micro to try see if there is activity?
I mean, why not. It's not like you're gonna break it. There is even firmware for some micros that turns them into logic analyzers
If you have a micro, you can definitely check for activity, as long as the logic levels are compatible
Are all JST like this?
https://www.digikey.com/short/5d5j8p93 - I have a usb panel mount that uses this
"Cable length:(30cm/12inch) Colour: Black Features:Panel Mount USB A 2.0 Female to 4 pin Female Motherboard Header Cable Extension Lead This USB cable connects rear USB female port to front panel header The cable exits through the PCI opening and plugged into one of the USB ports located at the b...
yeah jst's are 4 pin connectors and i think thats all m5stack actually sells because their mentally damaged and need you to buy into their horrid eco system
idk why jst's are so expensive
okay I can send this order in as I'm gonna make a simple board that connects 5v to 5v of the data usb and ground to 2-3 of the floppy drive's gnd or 0v as it's in the datasheet
ok i give up
i think i'm gona instead connect a esp32
and feed the image to that
the m5 developer intentionally went with a non common screw size
I mean I delete .fseventsd file and i can't find it somewhere to download it again
oi got it open
i found the issue
it's full of grey thremal compund
they put in there
it seeped into the sd card holder
Im starting to wonder if I will have to evacuate to the US soon from Canada if the forest fires keep spreading like almost 2 whole provinces now. They have started to ask help from non-NATO countries fire services. 😦
Oh so that's why the sky has been hazy here in Oregon lately.
It's mostly on the east coast atm so far from Oregon
what is that ?!
Yeah
refund request reason: Was sold surplus electronics from an oil spill
it's dripping with grease
make some french fries. that usually costs extra
🤣
i would wash it with dish soap. (without the battery of course)
but thats me
i put keyboards in the dishwasher.
silicon oil
Probably something you don't want around the house.
yeah
Certainly won't hurt.
yeah cant make it worse
yeah found some in my garage
The smart writer is for low volume manual and automatic chip writing
If you're going for large volume you'll need none of these
Because they will simply etch your program and music in the fabrication process
And that should costs less than the OTP model
NI? National Instruments?
😦 no luck
it's listing nothing
so it cannot see the sd card
tested 3 cards
i wasted alot of cash
on trash
😦
and m5 does not have a working email
they dont reply on facebook
and the forum is a grey zone where you can see no one is really giving feedback
what is an m5 ? You are modding your car ?
sometimes asking a chargeback from your credit card company magically make a company get back to you / open a communication channel specially at the step where they are advised the transaction might be cancelled 😄
i'll wait and see
Dont wait too long sometimes that is part of the tactics
responds on the 11 day - you had 10 day to do something about it for the warranty/whatever
ye
happens a lot of ali***
seen it happen
I was going to get a 400 euros construction kit for DIY from lithuania but such things stopped me - also the reputable shop selling it has it as a "marketplace" item and states it isnt their problem instead of reselling it and taking responsbility for it
oof
Yep
So I want to start a homelab I have a laptop with 6gbs of ram a amd brrrrrr and 256gb ssd
what should I run on it
Have you try reading on Google
https://community.m5stack.com/topic/1037/can-microsd-card-be-accessed-in-uiflow-or-with-micropython/4
@lukasmaximus thank you for your reply. But when I tried to exec os.mountsd I got an error as below. os.mountsd() W (20141) sdspi_host: spi bus changed (1 -> 2) E (20141) sdspi_host: spi bus 2 not available E (20141) vfs_native: Failed to initialize SD...
lets see
i did google it but never came past that
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'mountsd'
they made it imposible to use
a typical case of most syntax and examples dont even work
Looks like they have success with uiflow
i'm going to now follow their v-training guide word for word
but i know... this wont work
and failed
right here
so now i wil test 5 other sd cards
starting with a 32gb lexar
both on fat32 and exfat
fat32 and exfat
Lexar 32GB
Sandisk 16GB
Kingston 64GB
Adata 32GB
Sandisk 64GB
failure rate : 100%
no
you mean use the grove connector?
no
the usb cable yes
this is the stickV not the stickC
so now i'm stuck with the internal storage limit
meaning it's worthless to me
Question: why does the bot post blog stuff multiple times?
edits?
Yeah but it does it 2-3 times for every post.
Related: it seems like videos and livestreams are always linked in multiple channels, possibly by more than one bot.
it depends on what you want to do - what i would do is install Linux first off, but that's my OS of choice - the biggie i suppose would be to install Python and learn a bit about that before lurching off and buying stuff (the Python tutorial is pretty decent)
it is somewhat annoying...
The U.S. Patent Office has proposed new rules about who can challenge wrongly granted patents. If the rules become official, they will offer new protections to patent trolls. Challenging patents will become far more onerous, and impossible for some. The new rules could stop organizations like EFF,...
Well Ik python and I had already installed ubuntu but idk what to actual run on it
then i would ask again: what do you want to do? decide on what kind of project or general area of interest and also start poking around the CP learning guides https://learn.adafruit.com/
They're bloody expensive anyway so... It seems that they are designed to protect only some indistries...
i realised that my soldering iron was bad when it wouldn't melt my solder at 300c when it says that's its melting point on the roll of it so i turned up the temp and then my soldering iron tip melted
😭
I have come to believe patents stifle innovation
All these big companies rely on open source software stacks while patenting everything from rounded corners to the human genome
Violating the open source licenses in the process...
I may be wrong, but as I did understand all of those licenses are not really covered by any law, but they just use the copyright which is just too generic and used again by few players
Tbh this can be applied to any form of copyright in general. I think cgpgrey made a video about creative copyright but some elements can be related to in patents
Help support videos like this: https://www.patreon.com/cgpgrey
T-Shirts now for sale! http://www.cgpgrey.com/t-shirt
Grey's blog: http://www.cgpgrey.com/blog/
Correct for most hardware designs. GPL provides some very limited protections. Ideally people would use a dedicated OSHW license such as CERN OHL v2.
I meant that such licenses don't have a real world equivalent in law systems, but they use copyright which is really general as a way to exist
Unlike patents
But I am not a lawyer so idk
😱
i had a guy stop me in the middle of a video game, and ask "your using win 98"
he had scanned my pc..
yes.. for retro games.. emulated on my phone.
this industry is disgusting.
you ask how is this possible?
they have scanning tools for hacks and exploits
and the iso was in my downloads folder
future pie
Which industry? I'm tempted to ask for that ISO.
the gaming industry
my apologies
but i have seem patterns like this with m5stack too
where i had a idea to use a micro like a gpu for a lcd
so that the other micro is free to do whatever
and they took it
O_o
i have had cases where visiting their website crashed my browser
thats half the websites on the internet
yes but how many of you have seen your idea's taken
litterally 2 months after you start working on them
i have had their flasher and Kflash from sipeed come up as malware
or the first machine is bad. not saying you are wrong, but, it could be unrelated
yep or it's just the location, ip, ect..
browser in use
all markers used to find you in the crowd
one time someone was complaining about a website we hosted (forget if it was a rando or a client) and we made the site serve different pages only to them)
yep
so it's not that hard i'ts just one bad router or one bad server
and if you miss your target
you just drop a update and try again
if im worries about something being stolen i put something in it that either deliberately wrong, missing steps, or the like so you can instantly recognise it.
i know.. because i have been online for years and a victim of it
luckily most of my stuff is not interesting enough to steal
well, its the legal truth
but they make billions off of taking them
a plan to IMPLEMENT that idea is where the money is
so that stealing
thats why you cant patent ideas
true, but the people that steal will make sure you dont get the help you need
only methods
i have had game developers say some highly crazy stuff they could only find in my discord feed
to me
well, ish. I would never have actually made my cinema camera, let alone turned it into a business. So i really have no claim against red for example.
I can still hate them
😛
If you have an idea you think you are actually going to act on, you need to keep it to yourself until you have established an actual workable product. After that it will still be stolen, but you will have some teeth in any fight
and then you login, and a guy wearing the armor of your dreams stands there, leaving you in awe
and they hope
you will swipe your card
like i said they try
because discovery > temptation > ?
thats why online games are evil
all of them
well these same people that use these systems
share anything they can use
anything
your have a business that makes a good product "suddenly you get a call from investors"
you have a idea jotted down on notepad "i'll take that ty"
you draw a plan on paint or you look at content they can use
they will take it
it's like a gaming industry cold war
and we pay the price
game development is a waste of time, imagine all those programmers being allocated towards something useful like a a JavaScript webapp framework?
or a pizza drone delivery ssytem
24 hours later, no email from m5stack regarding my m5stickV
Hi @night crescent.
I have the encoding/decoding audio working on web. I can help with your Teddy Ruxpin hacking if you want. (I just saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KTaGIL_gC0)
FYI: I was the one who put together the SNX ROM format at https://www.exploitee.rs/index.php/Teddy_Ruxpin
Although the new Ruxpin is G722, the reason why some encoders may not work is that it expects a very specific sub-format. Some encoders may not allow you to specify the right parameters.
like those guys that used drones to drop blood at remote hospitals
saving lives
now thats a idea i can get behind
Note, I've also done Teddy Ruxpin hacking
they do do this with organs for transplants too since it's very troublesome because of traffic even when you close roads /police escort
awesome
amazing
tho airtraffic is the problem
as this may work in some area's or countries
but not all
drone arent a 747 dont need as much clearance, and organs deliveries takes priority over almost everything else
Seems to cause less problems if it's in the air though
yeah but if one flies into a low flying chopper
In France the police have dedicated organ trucks and training for motorcycle police officer to escort it
also because they need to get there fast
From the ones I saw they even have an helicopter on standby to land and pick up if they get completely jammed in traffic
Kinda impressive to see
When I got my pi4b 8gb I wasnt sure if it would come out of an armored bank truck or a normal delivery truck 🤣
insane
"Hello, sorry to disturb you, my lungs are in your tree"
Would be much better to just 3d print one at the hospital. Isnt it just a dried/solid mix of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen ? Ie: almost unlimited amount of it around ?
Teddy Ruxpin.... hacking?! What kind of project did you do with the animatronic teddy-bear-thing?
(Jokes --or failed attempts to that effect-- aside, I'm genuinely curious. Do share!)
One of the tasks in a recent GISHWHES was to modify a Teddy Ruxpin to talk along with a politician's speech. It may be they were thinking of doing so by creating a tape with the codes on it (they're basically just R/C signals modulated onto an audio carrier on one track), but I ended up programming an Arduino to drive the servos directly and controlling it with a Python program on a laptop to play back the animation in synch with the sound.
made it say "mommy doesnt love you"
politicians speech, thats even worse
😛
I did learn how to a) make an Arduino emulate a servo by reading the feedback pot and driving the motor, b) synchronize sounds with actions in Python, and c) control an Arduino from Python.
The Ruxpin servos aren't dedicated all-in-one servos, they're units with the motor and feedback potentiometer, and the circuitry to implement the function (basically a SN76004N and associated components) is on the mainboard with the audio circuitry. Happily, they're connectorized, so I can just plug the 5-pin connector onto some header on a breadboard and wire it to an Arduino.
I suspected they would be doing custom silicon for it, the R1 chip kind of was a shift of what I expected. I sort of thought they would have a combined M2+sensor fusion engine
Which I guess is still what they did
Heh, I've been wanting a Pro Display XDR, and while I do have $5000, I'm unlikely to spend it on a monitor.
Considering the capability of the Vision Pro, if I genuinely could afford it without hurting my budget I would definitely get it. It’s probably a solid 5-6 years ahead of other VR headsets just on first launch
"spatial computer". of course they cant call it s vr headset
At nearly the the same cost as a Magic Leap set, it’s way more powerful
That's the old/original Ruxpin right?
Yeah.
I'm glad Apple are getting into the AR/VR space
Apple have a heap of non-technical "fan-bois" so it helps adoption of a lot of new tech.
Yeah
Magic Leap 2 is $3300, Apple Vision Pro will be a much better investment
$200 more and a vastly more integrated ecosystem
I have Xreal (previously Nreal)'s Air glasses. They're great.
Affordable and good enough to mimic screens. Lots of people are using them for productivity for decently long sesssions.
I do wonder about Vision Pro + Windows support given Microsoft scraped HoloLens
Or they’ve nearly scraped it
I always love how these companies promote AR/VR initially with these headsets.
The picture everyday people in their homes.
Then at the end of the page in small writing, the price is in thousands of dollars. 🙂
Ah you can still buy HoloLens 2 for $3500
The only major competition for Vision Pro will be magic leap and HoloLens
Quest is more focused towards gaming
i'll buy in when i can plug my bi-focals into a usb port to charge them
As are other VR/AR headsets
Lol
Cool thing about Vision Pro is an external battery, though you only get 2hrs of battery life
I imagine someone here is going to hack together a backpack for even longer life lol
so there's a 5-pound weight hanging on your belt?
It’s a mag safe plug on the headset too for power
well, that will at least help prevent power-cord whiplash
Yeah
I’ll be curious for next year when they introduce a more consumer focused version
Sell enough units of the prosumer version to make more consumer valued version’s possible
Probably still running $2000 or more
Apple? nah - they'll just come out with a more expensive one
"become"?
devboards? it is apple. they have only ever sold overpriced gear to hipsters.
I have to say, I was actually kinda expecting that we'd all be all whipped up into a frenzy about the AR/VR headset and then everybody would get to the end of the event and it would be... crickets.
people are only becomming more aware when right to repair laws became cesored.
Apple has pretty much been luxury/prosumer
luxury? more like "how to mess with rich people"
I dono, I preferred the "put it to bed for another decade, see what happens in 2033" option for VR but maybe Apple will do something?
yes, but there is no 'become". that was their mode of business from day 1
apples 1st computers were devboards
they wanted $799 for a panel for my $999 cinema display. that was 20 years ago
Like, I had half suspected the metaphor-for-modern-society that was a phone strapped to your face was going to set off something, it just... didn't.
in the 1970s?
Apple has always been pretentious, always been geared toward people willing to buy expensive products
But my Apple MacBook Pro has more than earned it’s $1800 price tag. 5 years old and the only thing wrong is the battery needs replaced
they once made cables in their laptop displays so short they would break from normal use.
and then.. once you need it fixed, they offer you a new one.
Heck, I’ve still got an iPod nano from 2012 that somewhat holds a charge
most of the products arent bad (i do hate the OS though), but they are just generally bad value vs a windows or linux pc
honestly preffer a os i can side load on
I tend to like MacOS better than windows
It’s far quicker to get developing on Mac in my experience than windows.
I use Mac, windows, and Linux very regularly
in my industry nothing much runs on mac, or if it does it runs poorly
dude drop the he him thing it's become old and serves no purpose
It depends on what you’re doing
Please be respectful
it lets me know he is a he him, sooo, its totally purposeful
I’ve been misgendered a few times on this server. It’s helpful.
yup
and you took that personally
So thats the early concept drawings
because it is personal
I'd consider changing your attitude, otherwise I doubt you will last here long.
indeed
so basically snowboarding diving goggles
or stuffing occulus gearin inside the goggles
They cost 3.5K USD because the goggles also come with a pair of skis
I want someone to change the 3D display on the outside to have like.. demon Eyes
no offence, i just think these titles dont seem to help keep the peace.
i'll drop it now
Agreed (on the moving on part), let's just move on
Yeah, I guess the thing that's funny is that a friend did a huge fun AI-and-VR-related stage piece a few months back, and they used the Occulus Rift in see-through mode as part of the act.
There is a lot of financial gain around exploitation of these tags.
Let's move on
Looks like a good reaction GIF :P
This isn't the forum for this sort of discussion.
Let's (roughly) stick to tech, gadgets, electronics etc.
i want pizza now
i sent that drone an hour ago
how dare you
XD
i'm dying for pizza
closest delivery is miles away
they wont come here
I’ve had plans to eventually build a pizza oven cart that I can roll in and out if my garage.
mmm
in the long tem i will do a brick oven in the yard
but the bbq with a stone does well for now
you can't solder pizza
yeah but i can't order any either
making me hungry
and tbh food costs mean i have to ration
and sucks cuz my metabolism is high
food costs are up and down here. eggs went up last week, but meat has gone down a lot
so its a mixed bag
for me it's so bad i have to choose, food, electricity or shelter
you can only have 2
thats not good
here, if you know how to cook (and obviouslt have a kitchen) you can get buy with a few dollars a day for food. but rent has gone mad
Rent is impossible without a roommate or a partner
Rent where I live is impossible unless you pull in 6 figures
Buying a house isn’t much better if you can manage to do that
Though thankfully I don’t live in the Bay Area or New York. My salary could afford a broom closet at best.
house prices have stalled out, but you still cant buy anything under about 600k that is livable as is
so, not many people can do that
anyhow. pizza arrived. yay
That's not really the case. The Apple ][ was just some TTL chips on a board, a hacker's paradise. In the early Mac days, the pricing was nuts. These days, an Apple desktop is about the best value out there.
um, apple is the worst value of any desktop macine by a long way. a machine comparable in performance to the mini machines is like $300
IMHO, Apple are generally overpriced. There's hackintoshes that demonstrate how you can achieve the same level of performance at a much lowre price.
I have not seen anything like that demonstrated since the M1 came out.
hahahaha XD
i apologize if i have upset anyone
that might be somewhat true, but most (if not all) of the M1 models are still pretty high in the price bracket of computers/laptops.
$599 doesn't seem high to me.
Ah, so you're not buying gaming PCs, you're comparing with something like a Raspberry Pi.
i cannot afford to buy machine that powerful
could do amazing work with some of the new hardware
i'm on a 10 year old machine
mac mini is 1699cdn with still only 16gb ram and aenemic graphics. i can get a better pc for 500
Heh, I'm on a 2014 Mac Mini myself.
or for 1699 get a gtc3070ti with 32gb ram
i agree if you look at what the amd has to offer in terms of preformance comapred
I understand why people buy and own Apple, but I'm staying clear of it.
It's a very locked down ecosystem with no real alternatives. You're basically at the mercy of whatever Apple do.
you see apple crumbles
Yeah, the M1 runs rings around the AMD.
i dont agree
It's not a locked down ecosystem, it's a Unix box with a fancy GUI.
in gaming or work preformance
m1 doesnt run rings around an equally priced amd...
Locked as in, iOS/macOS
Gaming is different, modern games mostly run on the GPU anyway
but as a pc, the m1/m2 are way too expensive
depends on the game
Honestly, you don't really buy a Mac to play games (if you're half serious about doing that).
wait, no, whats the one wioth the guys jumping off platforms.
mac is not a way to do gaming
I admit I do most of my gaming on a PS4, but I do play a bunch of games on my 10 year old Mini.
a good rdna3 chipset is no fool
the conversation is moot anyway. all my software is windows only
mac could be made of unicorns and still do me no good
Same here, all my software is Unix only
The reason I stay on Windows is simple.
Linux hardware and software support is generally terrible. I'm often not in a position where I get to choose what software I run too (e.g. I need Zoom for work, so I need it to run).
I want options when I buy hardware. I don't want to be locked into a certain keyboard switch, and/or layout.
Most windows only software is going to break soon anyway
I've been burnt by Apple several times. I was semi-forced into that situation because my company was basically forcing Macs onto their developers.
explaiin
I hated the touchbar. I hated losing a physical escape key etc.
MICROS~1 is replacing the windoze backend with Linux
yeah, but it's more about companies catering to those ecosystems
Same can be said for M1 Macs too
Nobody cares about Linux as a desktop
Oh, I agree about the touchbar. That was bogus. It's not like I'm an apple fanboi or anything.
There IS a Zoom client, but it's buggy af.
yes. software will be moved to whatever new windows there is, because thats is what the customers pay for
All windows software is buggy IMO
last windows software related issue i had wa sin 1997
The cool thing is that after they adapt the windoze software, it'll run on Linux too. Gaming at full speed on Linux. That'll be a nice change.
Like I said, I understand why most people like Apple. It's a very good fusion between software and hardware.
all their hardware works well together (e.g. iphone + Macbook). Most people don't care that much about certain things (like layout etc).
bad coders are bad coders, on any platform
yeah, but Windows software will generally get fixed because there's an audience for it.
If there's a bug in a Linux client, it could stay like that for a very LONG LONG time.
my code is just as bad on arduino as it is on pi
@late fulcrum I'll admit the M1 Mac Mini is good value (if you can afford it). Just did more research into it.
I do have to deal with the fact that my phone is Android and my desktop is Apple. But at least they'll interoperate.
If there was any reason to switch my industry would, but there is not. SOME studios partly switched to linux, but only ones that can afford a full time coding crew to keep it alive
(like pixar)
although they still also use windows
(and ironically, not mac)
even steve jobs knew mac os was not suitable
hehe
A surprising number of MICROS~1 developers use Macs
The steve jobs bio movie was all made on pc
giggles
(i just made that up, but it is probably true)
I would have guessed the opposite. Most creative types and lots of video editors are Mac users.
pc, then linux are the main vfx/comp/editing platforms. apple is miniscule. some people of course use it, but most full featured studios are all windows, or part linux part windows
Apple made a big name by claiming they were the choice for graphics, despite never being the choice for graphics
Ah, you're making stuff up again. Got it.
ooookay. i mean this is literally my job
"despite never being the choice for graphics" is provably false.
off you go then
in the 80s and 90s it was SGI / irix. then it moved to pc, either windows or linux. most of the software has never even run on mac
prepress i will give you. that has a big mac contingent
amiga was actually pretty big in the 80s too
I mean, Unity runs pretty nice on Macs, lots of unity based games are developed on Macs as well..
But “which is best” is always going to be contextually bound
"best" is almost irrelevant in the end. they are all capable of being the best in some way.
Yeah
General purpose development, Linux comparable features and backend tend to make Macs a choice for many kinds of software and web development.
Though you’ll never see a Mac CI/CD system at scale
Maybe back in the day when Apple still made servers
But I’ll never be able to play farm simulator in a playable way on mac so I have a PC for that
we did get lots of mac pros to run windows
at the time, the base model with nothing in it was good value
Hilariously, windows 10 ran so much better on my Intel Mac than on comparable windows certified hardware I had
but they could never run mac os cause it would not support any video cards except the 2 they offered
Yeah, big downside is not much expandability
one of our scanners came tethered to an ipad. but that turned out to be a disaster (not really the ipads fault, just the tethering in general)
and 1 or 2 of the on set people have macbooks for personal preference, but they dont "work" on them. just tak enotes and playback video
i think thats the only real macs in the whole place
Macs are just more general purpose
They’re not super great at specialized things outside of like.. music production
in our programming lab in highschool we used Macs
Lol
Video editing is also fairly nice on Macs as well. Not super graphics intensive.. but moderate live action footage and 2D animation
i had a 19khz pro soundblaster that would do 2ms asio. and everything since has been pretty horrible.
liek they went backwards
For windows?
Yeah.. I remember windows back in like Windows 98 had a super cool mixer for mic inputs
Windows 2000 had it, but it was then removed in XP
ha
i had the soundblaster on xp64
and then eventually the little IO box broke and that was that
Bummer
I am super sensitive to latency. i can hear 5ms lag clearly. so meh
i still don't get why win 11 is here yet i still cannot select what audio channel goes to what souncard and speaker
11 is just ugly
i havent gone for 11. trying to avoid as long as i can
I turned off the fTPM on my Ryzen 5600X
it tries so hard to make things seem clean and easy but tbh if you dont memorize shortcuts you are in for a rough ride
Broke some things that I’m too lazy to fix lol
what is that?
firmware TPM
ooh
Thermal Protection Module
trusted platform module
Trusted platform module that isn’t that trusted because it can be very easily circumvented
my lenovos had that as an option card
yes
i guess its built in now
i have a 7950x so i assume if i upgrade i need to take a look
TPM is a horrible security solution from an embedded view point
mine has tpm but secure boot is broken on my laptop
due to win 10 not booting unless i stick to the built in gpu
Apple got the security chip right with T2, honestly chipset developers could really take some notes.
i very much doubt
This being from an embedded security viewpoint
(Am an embedded engineer myself)
recently saw zyxel was caught with backdoors in routers
for maximum security i unplug all the wires
That's why it's nice to be just a user. I don't know that my computer and software is or isn't crap. 😉
same
Anyway, I’m not saying Apple is impervious because that just isn’t true. Just that circumventing the T2 security chip more often than not requires physical access to a computer.
adds so much stress
i used to work for a isp, a single laptop gave us all ransom ware
Most security breaches are caused by social engineering
that month i nearly died from a anxiety attack
remined me of a vfx software slogan... "we suck less". they made t shirts for trade shows 😛
So the weakest point in your security chain is the least educated person on your team from a security standpoint
Couldn't be a Dyson slogan.
ha
what kind of clips are these for PCBs? Greaseweazel's screw holes are 2mm AKA the smaller screw size
eyeon (now blackamgic)
oh dear
Oh man that GIF is trippier than it looked
That character gets far more hate than he desrves.
that was such a stupid addition
(and the vfx)
membrane connector?
Darren/M.O.D.O.K was my favorite comedic relief of the movie
meh
And it did close the door on what actually happened to him
it was not a very good movie
It wasn’t a great movie, but it was fairly good.
To me it felt too much like a star wars clone.
Personally, it was a bit rough to get into with the story feeling like it skipped forward with little explanation.
The ants part definitely felt star wars attack of the clones like
A lot of the creatures, vehicles, and buildings also
But I generally think it was an okay addition. Not great, but okay.
I mean, it’s Kang, he’s from 2700
You sort of expect futuristic structures
ha, my friend worked on attack of the clones and when it came out all he said was "i dint write it"
And Kang has always been kind of an over powered technopunk anyway
Though Kang’s look in Quantumania felt too close to Galactus
i think kang is going to be swept under the carpet pretty fast :/
Another actor’s career swept away by the court of public opinion. I don’t think Disney formally severed ties with Jonathan Majors?
He was never charged from what I’ve read
Maybe they did
May 11th article said they were looking for a replacement
I can’t keep up with the news anymore
But, if Majors did do anything, he should definitely face the consequences for that
disney is basically putting everything on hold pending an actual judgement i think
they are covering all bases with a replacement, various alternate plans
Yeah, Majors played Kang well but definitely doesn’t deserve the role of found guilty of what he’s been accused of
yeah
The hardest part here is the court of public opinion. He’s already been judged
And Disney very well might cut ties just to save any future Kang films in the franchise
disney's has been uncharacteristically smart with dealing with these things.
Yeah
they dont over react, they dont dismiss, they wait til the have all the info
WB cut the Rick and Morty cocreator before a judge even ruled in his case
The guy was found not guilty too
i think they agreed mutually on that one to not harm the show.
but yeah
when the dust settles, maybe they hire him back, maybe they dont
Probably will. Disney is not known for having a spine.
thats cancel culture at work
No, he was accused of some pretty horrible things.
i know
I wouldn’t do much say cancel culture, I call it saving face.
yes
that how cancel culture works
Better to be early and be wrong
honestly people have called me some horrific things when had done nothing
marvel has recast a number of people but just straight recasting majors will be weird.
There’s been no official statement other than they are monitoring the situation and have suspended him at least.
But no formal cutting of ties
yeah
I mean, they’ve all mostly been PG-13
The amount of “violence” in the films, it would be weird for them to be PG
At this point speculation is pointless. I'm not sure what the accusations are, but the court system is designed to determine whether they are true.
they are diversifying genres. antman is comedy. ms marvel is teen dramaedy. etc. soem hit, some miss. but i like it.
seen worse
you take a film made in 1997 like Event Horizon and watch that
and it hits you how far ahead they were already
Eh, they’re considerably violent compared to traditional Disney films. The distinction likely matters a lot to them.
they did a scene where she looks like Samus from metriod
funny story, i worked on superman returns, and did the plane crash scene. originally i had the pilots die, the wing take out an f22, and the plans slam right into the ground outside the baseball stadium. next day they came back and none of that was allowed cause they needed to tay PG. sigh.
Ah booo
How is Superman supposed to develop character if he just saves everyone the first go
Jk lol
we were only alowwed to "kill" the one bag guy at the end
Zod
At this point I'm not a fan of Disney owning everything. It was better when multiple (independent) studios were involved.
not zod
legit you cannot just have everything be flowers and cookies
Sure you can, my daughter would love that
do that too long and people will want you to stop
they want money, and kids make more money than r rated
for kids yes
Kids movies are huge cash cows
but the grownups that show up will start to hate it
Kids don’t care how bad the movie is
and?
Kids don’t care about critic reviews
it's not the kids you need to worry about
MCU was a massive gamble that worked, but it so easily could have failed after ironman
their already indoctornated
The Mario movie? I give it a 6/10 for creativity. 10/10 for nostalgia, and 15/10 for my kids reaction.
ha
They’ve watched the Mario movie like.. 15 times lol
we did scooby doo. one of them forget which. and we had a screening, and all the kids were too scared of the monsters
2003 scooby doo?
The one with scrappy doo as the villain?
well sometimes films are not made with children in mind
ha
ha
HAHAHAHA
Joking of course lol
have fun
Particularly teenagers
Most adult movies lately have fallen pretty flat. There isn’t really many new ways to tell stories anymore
So a lot of it comes down to the comedy or A listers you can get signed up
dungeons and dragons was really good
I personally haven’t seen many adult marketed movies lately. Non have looked particularly good
the movies/shows i work on are vfx heavy, so they tend to be light on plot.
I’ve heard D&D is a mixed bag among my nerdy friends
truth is there is money to be made in selling toys to kids
so thats why it's a richer market
I’ll probably watch it for the sake of watching it. But I probably won’t buy it to own
Form my own opinion
ha
But I was never into d&d so I don’t know how well it will land
ive done some really bad movies. now many, but oof. one call the bye bye man
The new Mortal Kombat movie seems cool
thats from 2 years ago or so?
i saw clips of it
seems a step up form the originals
ha
I think it hasn’t come out yet?
it was really good
oh, part 2?
I thought I saw something about it recently..
Ah yes part 2
I had seen they made some decent casting decisions
Filming it supposed to take place between July and September
I’ve mostly relegated myself to TV series
watch wednesday. help keep me emplyed.
😛
haha
i wish i got royalties
i would shill so hard for these shows, now matter how bad they were
(no i wouldnt)
Lol
Wednesday was decent, though I tend to wish the show was as dark and trivial as the very beginning
its weird. cause tim directed some eps, and not others. and the reviews are sorta opposing. the funniest was one review going "this is just a teen drama with monsters, i hate it" and the next one under it "a teen drama with zombies, i love it!"
i recenlty tried the system shock remaster
it's really really good
they made a nice circuit editor for wire panels
One of my favorite bands ended up in the soundtrack of Wednesday.
backsteet boys?
i'm more of a SlashStreet fan
What's the smallest soc package in terms of volume?
idk
i am still waiting for a email from m5stack
they say 24 hours to reply
i probed with a micro to see if there is signals
3.3v
nothing
nothing
nothing
nothing
how long do you think i should wait for a reply from them?
I plan to use the same 3.3v pin to feed the battery controller power and receive power from it
Should I add a diode on the lane the controller feeds back voltage to only allow one way flow
context?
Unit LCD SKU:U120 Description Unit LCD is a 1.14 inch color LCD expansion screen unit. It adopts ST7789V2 drive scheme, the resolution is 135*240, and it supports RGB666 display (262,144 colors). Anyone networking people here ?
Trying to install a rj45 pass through in my house
The network guy didn't know how to do the pin out
poe?
wrong image
hold on
@opal night
if from machine to hub or router just use the one on the left
machine to machine use the one on the right
So router to a wall port (female) then wall port to laptop
So I run a cable from the router to the port then another cable from the other side of the port to my machine
No poe
@dusk oracle do you think most network engineers should know how to do this ?
hold on
wait if it's to a plug
a socket
then it's 1:1
because the lan cable that plugs into it
wil be wired as above if i am correct
@opal night
Yeah
Idk he did 1:1 first
But its not working
Might be a bad cable in which case I will blow up
Yeah that's what
Yeah so basically a direct patch
Kill me
i have never done these myself
I wanted to just do this my self
Dad said no
Get some guy
yeah it's pin for pin
2 hrs just sitting around
He came
2 times and saw everything
Before finally coming today
fool
reminds me of my boss i worked for
and i was often not allowed to speak
or he gets mad "i'm the boss what will the customer think"
"i think the customer is happy his wifi works"
BAM, now it is. Apple just rolled out a high performance gaming compatibility layer.
I'll admit I did not expect to see DirectX support on MacOS but there it is.
congratulations what will the abomonation be called?
XD
Don't know, don't care (never played PC games in the first place).
hahaha
Something that doesnt use the word gaming, bet on that 😛
shame man
mac people want to be gamers too
we should welcome them as brothers
and show them the might of pcmr
@rapid geode XD
I'd like some dupont like connector that do attach to the cable directly as rj45 connectors
I end up buying connectors off AliExpress then joining wires, for not crimping those little junks
did the prices for pi's go back down?
looking on amazon and they seem to be no where near as bad
i mean not MSRP but not as bad as they were
yes they are - i read somewhere recently that the supply chain woes were easing (for this stuff)
Easing slowly, yes.
remember when apple sold servers ?
Yeah, but remember when SE/30s were the favorited file servers for Mac-using environments?
I dont know specific. Juts that I had an interview once and they told me that they had apple servers a few years ago. So I asked them if they still had them / had mac or pc so I wouldnt leave the job interview
learned that day that apple sold servers and did a lot of IT consulting and big companies actually used such an ecosystem
Should I add a diode on the lane the controller feeds back voltage to only allow one way flow
I plan to use the same 3.3v pin to feed the battery controller power and receive power from it
Like if USB have power USB power else battery
There are IDC Berg connectors that you can easily attach to ribbon cable. They can then plug into headers on boards.
There's nothing that could be crimped down with just one cable and not a whole array?
this is cool for graphics cards https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/products/601-wireview-en the pcb design is kinda cool too
That is how the Dupont style connectors work, it's just instead of contact+housing that's crimped on in one go, the contacts are crimped on and then placed into the housing.
@dusk oracle I got the wiring and stuff done
But I seem to be having some issues.
The two Ethernet/patch cables I'm using are working fine and I can connect my laptop to the router via lan directly
But when I plug everything through the port it's not working
It starts identifying and then stops
Says there is no cable connected
But then starts identifying and
Rinse and repeat
Through what port (sorry, I came in partway through)
The problem is that often the contact when crimped down, can't be inserted in the housing
So it's a pita
Hey everyone, a business partner and I are tooling around with a concept. While we're both getting educated on Matrixes and Raspberry Pi's we're wondering if this is even possible to scale (considering chip shortage and adafruit's limit on orders). If anyone is willing to sit to assist I'd be extremely grateful, and would be willing to compensate for your time if someone knowledgable would be willing to jump on a call
I'd shocked tbh that adafruit doesn't provide an email, considering if this is viable we would be ordering in bulk
Yeah, those little crimped terminals are a pain. I usually buy wires with terminals already on them for small connectors like that.
Yeah, it's always put a crimp on my style.
That's a stereo phone jack. They're available in a few sizes, popular ones are 1/4" and 1/8"
@late fulcrum love you man! 🙂
