Juat saw the ISS go right overhead in central Texas. I waved, but I don't think they saw me...

#

Even then, there are dozens of variants (like the aforementioned AVX)

#

Originally, Intel released the 8008, which was already misnamed, it "should" have been 1301 or 1302, to follow their naming scheme at the time, but marketing had other ideas. It was packaged in a 18-pin DIP, as Intel didn't like the idea of large IC packages (they wanted to be all 0.3" DIP after they finally abandoned the TO-99 package).

#

I'm breadboarding one, Ben Eater style

burnt tendon
#

I mean, but think about the lovely package for the 68000 in DIP Format.

#

I don't think I appreciated just how much pressure there was at the time to make smaller packages with fewer pins until I actually looked at the Texas Cockroach that is the 68000

#

Before that I was like "Why does the 65816 have to be so weird?"

granite portal
#

srsly tho how would I find such a part

late fulcrum
# median viper I don't know why you don't like Intel. I like ARM also but Intel is decent

Back when there were four major architecture choices (Fairchild F-8, RCA 1802, the related Motorola 6800 and MOS 6502, and Intel's 8008), I considered Intel's offering to be the most flawed. By the time the PC came out, there were even better CPUs available (Z80 comes to mind), but IBM went with the 8088 for complicated political reasons, even though it was already apparent to the industry that it was slow and saddled with bizarre engineering choices. As Intel realized their processors couldn't compete on power or performance, they pushed clock speed (the "megahertz myth") instead. The dominance of the PC, and the backward X86 architecture in general, has held back computing an estimated 20 years at this point. I can understand why Intel hitched their wagon to X86 after the Itanic debacle, but I do not consider it "decent". At long last, they're trying to cast off at least some of the glaring design issues by ditching the early 8 bit design, along with the 16 and 32 bit add-ons, keeping just the 64-bit support https://cdrdv2.intel.com/v1/dl/getContent/776648. As discussed above, there aren't even any native X86 designs in use, they're all kind of emulated because there's no practical way to get even a reasonably performant implementation of that hoary old ISA directly.

Decided to try and learn Japanese

#

Not the writing quite yet, but just whatever way duolingo does it

In this process of starting to learn, I’ve realized that Goku in Dragon Ball Z named his son “rice”

And also that every character is based on some food or other pun

Doing German with Duolingo, I'm not so sure the sentences are conversationally helpful

#

I guess this shouldn't really surprise me but I'm actually really good at recalling the food words from languages tho. This led me to being in Barcelona and ordering off the menu like I knew the language (and therefore, them telling me about the special that we had to order) without actually having any real fluency in Spanish or Catalan.

I want to go to Japan and fill several suitcases with Gundam kits. 😄

burnt tendon
#

I mean, I went to Japan when I was a little blonde second grader and that's probably a huge part of how I turned out the way I did.

This was while they were stoking xenophobia towards the Japanese in the popular media and so being there kinda immunized my brain.

#

I need to go back. It's on the vague provisional plan for next big international trip.

But, yah, the problem lately is that there's a whole bunch of travel bloggers who do ASMR videos of really neat places around East Asia and so I'm like "Welp, this would be fun" except that there's like a zillion neat places that there's an ASMR Video of and only so much time and money, LOL.

I personally would love just to spend a year or two traveling. staying at least a month in a few regions to experience them.

Although I did like japan for art stuff (comics, anime, dresses), but lately I don't know stuff is just boring repetitive, low cost, dunno if I just saw too much things, or if they shifted towards another market given the recent industry boom

Dummie question
car's command controls have a standardized sensibility of some kind or not?
Because the last time I was training to get a driving license I did a mess, I've found difficult to adapt to the car sensibility, and since lessons do costs and are expensive I was hoping to find/build some kind of simulator

late fulcrum
#

They tend to be similar enough, although there are quirks. Some will have more sensitive brakes, some less, some have faster responding steering, or nonlinear ("D") steering. However, the basic experience is similar enough that the knowledge transfers and you quickly adapt (as you're part of the feedback loop, you just adjust your inputs to get the desired effect)

fresh niche
#

I am honestly surprised that a opel can achive 270 in the first place

ebon dew
#

This will happen if you put egregiously wrong sized tires on the car. Like if you put a 14" tire on a wheel designed for 15" tires it can throw off your speedometer by quite a bit. The bigger the difference vs spec the more your speedometer will be off.

#

I had low profile tires once and my speedometer was consistently off by 10-15mph. I got many tickets because I literally didn't know how fast I was going.

Officer: "Do you know how fast you were going?" Me: "Honestly, no".

Hello. Looking at the following formulas and the instructions to compute them. I tried to understand where the factors 2, 262144 and 131072 came from but didn't understand. The simplified equation for the sector 5 is T/2 + (Y - Z)/2. But in the instruction I can see that it is T/4 + (Y - Z)/2 * 131072. Can someone explain me how they end up with that ?

#
    int32_t wX;
    int32_t wY;
    int32_t wZ;
    int32_t wUAlpha;
    int32_t wUBeta;
    int32_t wTimePhA;
    int32_t wTimePhB;
    int32_t wTimePhC;

    wUAlpha = Valfa_beta.alpha * (int32_t)pHandle->hT_Sqrt3;
    wUBeta = -(Valfa_beta.beta * ((int32_t)pHandle->PWMperiod)) * 2;

    wX = wUBeta;
    wY = (wUBeta + wUAlpha) / 2;
    wZ = (wUBeta - wUAlpha) / 2;

    /* Sector calculation from wX, wY, wZ */
    if (wY < 0)
    {
      if (wZ < 0)
      {
        pHandle->Sector = SECTOR_5;
        wTimePhA = (((int32_t)pHandle->PWMperiod) / 4) + ((wY - wZ) / (int32_t)262144);
        wTimePhB = wTimePhA + (wZ / 131072);
        wTimePhC = wTimePhA - (wY / 131072) ;

        pHandle->lowDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhC;
        pHandle->midDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhA;
        pHandle->highDuty = (uint16_t)wTimePhB;
      }
late fulcrum
#

I suspect the 2 comes from the fact that it's trying to make a pulse symmetric about a particular point, so half the pulse is before it and half after. 262144 is an even power of two (2¹⁸ or 0x40000), I'm guessing it's related to the number of bits in the counter. 131072 is half that or 2¹⁷.

Hi @night crescent.
I have the encoding/decoding audio working on web. I can help with your Teddy Ruxpin hacking if you want. (I just saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KTaGIL_gC0)
FYI: I was the one who put together the SNX ROM format at https://www.exploitee.rs/index.php/Teddy_Ruxpin
Although the new Ruxpin is G722, the reason why some encoders may not work is that it expects a very specific sub-format. Some encoders may not allow you to specify the right parameters.

One of the tasks in a recent GISHWHES was to modify a Teddy Ruxpin to talk along with a politician's speech. It may be they were thinking of doing so by creating a tape with the codes on it (they're basically just R/C signals modulated onto an audio carrier on one track), but I ended up programming an Arduino to drive the servos directly and controlling it with a Python program on a laptop to play back the animation in synch with the sound.

rapid geode
#

made it say "mommy doesnt love you"

rapid geode
#

😛

late fulcrum
#

I did learn how to a) make an Arduino emulate a servo by reading the feedback pot and driving the motor, b) synchronize sounds with actions in Python, and c) control an Arduino from Python.

tardy badger
#

Wow, the Apple Vision Pro look sweet

#

If only I had $3500 😵

late fulcrum
#

The Ruxpin servos aren't dedicated all-in-one servos, they're units with the motor and feedback potentiometer, and the circuitry to implement the function (basically a SN76004N and associated components) is on the mainboard with the audio circuitry. Happily, they're connectorized, so I can just plug the 5-pin connector onto some header on a breadboard and wire it to an Arduino.

tardy badger
#

I suspected they would be doing custom silicon for it, the R1 chip kind of was a shift of what I expected. I sort of thought they would have a combined M2+sensor fusion engine

#

Which I guess is still what they did

late fulcrum
tardy badger
#

Considering the capability of the Vision Pro, if I genuinely could afford it without hurting my budget I would definitely get it. It’s probably a solid 5-6 years ahead of other VR headsets just on first launch

rapid geode

tardy badger

At nearly the the same cost as a Magic Leap set, it’s way more powerful

vivid turret
late fulcrum
#

Yeah.

vivid turret
#

I'm glad Apple are getting into the AR/VR space

#

Apple have a heap of non-technical "fan-bois" so it helps adoption of a lot of new tech.

tardy badger
#

Yeah

#

Magic Leap 2 is $3300, Apple Vision Pro will be a much better investment

#

$200 more and a vastly more integrated ecosystem

vivid turret
#

I have Xreal (previously Nreal)'s Air glasses. They're great.

#

Affordable and good enough to mimic screens. Lots of people are using them for productivity for decently long sesssions.

tardy badger
#

I do wonder about Vision Pro + Windows support given Microsoft scraped HoloLens

#

Or they’ve nearly scraped it

vivid turret
#

I always love how these companies promote AR/VR initially with these headsets.
The picture everyday people in their homes.
Then at the end of the page in small writing, the price is in thousands of dollars. 🙂

tardy badger
#

Ah you can still buy HoloLens 2 for $3500

#

The only major competition for Vision Pro will be magic leap and HoloLens

#

Quest is more focused towards gaming

patent hemlock
#

i'll buy in when i can plug my bi-focals into a usb port to charge them

tardy badger
#

As are other VR/AR headsets

#

Lol

#

Cool thing about Vision Pro is an external battery, though you only get 2hrs of battery life

#

I imagine someone here is going to hack together a backpack for even longer life lol

patent hemlock
#

so there's a 5-pound weight hanging on your belt?

tardy badger
#

It’s a mag safe plug on the headset too for power

patent hemlock
#

well, that will at least help prevent power-cord whiplash

tardy badger
#

Yeah

#

I’ll be curious for next year when they introduce a more consumer focused version

#

Sell enough units of the prosumer version to make more consumer valued version’s possible

#

Probably still running $2000 or more

I dono, I preferred the "put it to bed for another decade, see what happens in 2033" option for VR but maybe Apple will do something?

dusk oracle

rapid geode

or for 1699 get a gtc3070ti with 32gb ram

dusk oracle
#

i agree if you look at what the amd has to offer in terms of preformance comapred

vivid turret
#

I understand why people buy and own Apple, but I'm staying clear of it.
It's a very locked down ecosystem with no real alternatives. You're basically at the mercy of whatever Apple do.

dusk oracle
#

you see apple crumbles

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, the M1 runs rings around the AMD.

dusk oracle
#

i dont agree

late fulcrum
#

It's not a locked down ecosystem, it's a Unix box with a fancy GUI.

dusk oracle
#

in gaming or work preformance

rapid geode
#

m1 doesnt run rings around an equally priced amd...

vivid turret
rapid geode
#

for desktop use.

#

notebooks it gets a bit different

late fulcrum
#

Gaming is different, modern games mostly run on the GPU anyway

rapid geode
#

but as a pc, the m1/m2 are way too expensive

dusk oracle
#

depends on the game

rapid geode
#

minecradft

#

😛

vivid turret
#

Honestly, you don't really buy a Mac to play games (if you're half serious about doing that).

rapid geode
#

wait, no, whats the one wioth the guys jumping off platforms.

dusk oracle
#

mac is not a way to do gaming

late fulcrum
#

I admit I do most of my gaming on a PS4, but I do play a bunch of games on my 10 year old Mini.

dusk oracle
#

a good rdna3 chipset is no fool

rapid geode
#

the conversation is moot anyway. all my software is windows only

#

mac could be made of unicorns and still do me no good

late fulcrum
#

Same here, all my software is Unix only

vivid turret
#

The reason I stay on Windows is simple.
Linux hardware and software support is generally terrible. I'm often not in a position where I get to choose what software I run too (e.g. I need Zoom for work, so I need it to run).
I want options when I buy hardware. I don't want to be locked into a certain keyboard switch, and/or layout.

late fulcrum
#

Most windows only software is going to break soon anyway

vivid turret
#

I've been burnt by Apple several times. I was semi-forced into that situation because my company was basically forcing Macs onto their developers.

vivid turret
#

I hated the touchbar. I hated losing a physical escape key etc.

late fulcrum
#

MICROS~1 is replacing the windoze backend with Linux

vivid turret
#

Same can be said for M1 Macs too

#

Nobody cares about Linux as a desktop

late fulcrum
#

Oh, I agree about the touchbar. That was bogus. It's not like I'm an apple fanboi or anything.

vivid turret
#

There IS a Zoom client, but it's buggy af.

rapid geode
#

yes. software will be moved to whatever new windows there is, because thats is what the customers pay for

late fulcrum
#

All windows software is buggy IMO

rapid geode
#

last windows software related issue i had wa sin 1997

late fulcrum
#

The cool thing is that after they adapt the windoze software, it'll run on Linux too. Gaming at full speed on Linux. That'll be a nice change.

vivid turret
#

Like I said, I understand why most people like Apple. It's a very good fusion between software and hardware.
all their hardware works well together (e.g. iphone + Macbook). Most people don't care that much about certain things (like layout etc).

rapid geode
#

bad coders are bad coders, on any platform

vivid turret
rapid geode
#

my code is just as bad on arduino as it is on pi

vivid turret
#

@late fulcrum I'll admit the M1 Mac Mini is good value (if you can afford it). Just did more research into it.

late fulcrum
#

I do have to deal with the fact that my phone is Android and my desktop is Apple. But at least they'll interoperate.

rapid geode
#

If there was any reason to switch my industry would, but there is not. SOME studios partly switched to linux, but only ones that can afford a full time coding crew to keep it alive

#

(like pixar)

#

although they still also use windows

#

(and ironically, not mac)

#

even steve jobs knew mac os was not suitable

#

hehe

late fulcrum
#

A surprising number of MICROS~1 developers use Macs

rapid geode
#

The steve jobs bio movie was all made on pc

#

giggles

#

(i just made that up, but it is probably true)

vivid turret
#

I would have guessed the opposite. Most creative types and lots of video editors are Mac users.

rapid geode
#

pc, then linux are the main vfx/comp/editing platforms. apple is miniscule. some people of course use it, but most full featured studios are all windows, or part linux part windows

#

Apple made a big name by claiming they were the choice for graphics, despite never being the choice for graphics

late fulcrum
#

Ah, you're making stuff up again. Got it.

rapid geode
#

ooookay. i mean this is literally my job

late fulcrum
#

"despite never being the choice for graphics" is provably false.

rapid geode
#

off you go then

#

in the 80s and 90s it was SGI / irix. then it moved to pc, either windows or linux. most of the software has never even run on mac

#

prepress i will give you. that has a big mac contingent

#

amiga was actually pretty big in the 80s too

late fulcrum
tardy badger
#

I mean, Unity runs pretty nice on Macs, lots of unity based games are developed on Macs as well..

#

But “which is best” is always going to be contextually bound

rapid geode
#

"best" is almost irrelevant in the end. they are all capable of being the best in some way.

tardy badger
#

Yeah

#

General purpose development, Linux comparable features and backend tend to make Macs a choice for many kinds of software and web development.

#

Though you’ll never see a Mac CI/CD system at scale

#

Maybe back in the day when Apple still made servers

rapid geode
#

xserve

#

ha

#

(omst of which did not run mac os)

tardy badger
#

But I’ll never be able to play farm simulator in a playable way on mac so I have a PC for that

rapid geode
#

we did get lots of mac pros to run windows

#

at the time, the base model with nothing in it was good value

tardy badger
#

Hilariously, windows 10 ran so much better on my Intel Mac than on comparable windows certified hardware I had

rapid geode
#

but they could never run mac os cause it would not support any video cards except the 2 they offered

tardy badger
#

Yeah, big downside is not much expandability

rapid geode
#

one of our scanners came tethered to an ipad. but that turned out to be a disaster (not really the ipads fault, just the tethering in general)

#

and 1 or 2 of the on set people have macbooks for personal preference, but they dont "work" on them. just tak enotes and playback video

#

i think thats the only real macs in the whole place

tardy badger
#

Macs are just more general purpose

#

They’re not super great at specialized things outside of like.. music production

static flare
#

in our programming lab in highschool we used Macs

rapid geode
#

music on windows is... doable? i guess thats the nicest thing i can say

#

ha

tardy badger
#

Lol

#

Video editing is also fairly nice on Macs as well. Not super graphics intensive.. but moderate live action footage and 2D animation

rapid geode
#

i had a 19khz pro soundblaster that would do 2ms asio. and everything since has been pretty horrible.

#

liek they went backwards

tardy badger
#

For windows?

rapid geode
#

yes

#

i have a usb m-audio now. but usb by definition is unacceptable

tardy badger
#

Yeah.. I remember windows back in like Windows 98 had a super cool mixer for mic inputs

#

Windows 2000 had it, but it was then removed in XP

rapid geode
#

ha

#

i had the soundblaster on xp64

and then eventually the little IO box broke and that was that

i very much doubt

tardy badger

I mean, it’s Kang, he’s from 2700

rapid geode
tardy badger

And Kang has always been kind of an over powered technopunk anyway

Though Kang’s look in Quantumania felt too close to Galactus

rapid geode

i think kang is going to be swept under the carpet pretty fast :/

tardy badger
#

Another actor’s career swept away by the court of public opinion. I don’t think Disney formally severed ties with Jonathan Majors?

#

He was never charged from what I’ve read

#

Maybe they did

#

May 11th article said they were looking for a replacement

#

I can’t keep up with the news anymore

#

But, if Majors did do anything, he should definitely face the consequences for that

rapid geode
#

they are covering all bases with a replacement, various alternate plans

tardy badger

Yeah, Majors played Kang well but definitely doesn’t deserve the role of found guilty of what he’s been accused of

rapid geode
#

yeah

tardy badger
#

The hardest part here is the court of public opinion. He’s already been judged

#

And Disney very well might cut ties just to save any future Kang films in the franchise

rapid geode

disney's has been uncharacteristically smart with dealing with these things.

tardy badger

At this point speculation is pointless. I'm not sure what the accusations are, but the court system is designed to determine whether they are true.

rapid geode
#

they are diversifying genres. antman is comedy. ms marvel is teen dramaedy. etc. soem hit, some miss. but i like it.

tardy badger
#

I enjoy the diversity

#

Ms Marvel was a nice nod to the comics too

dusk oracle
#

you take a film made in 1997 like Event Horizon and watch that

#

and it hits you how far ahead they were already

tardy badger
#

Eh, they’re considerably violent compared to traditional Disney films. The distinction likely matters a lot to them.

Most adult movies lately have fallen pretty flat. There isn’t really many new ways to tell stories anymore

So a lot of it comes down to the comedy or A listers you can get signed up

Wednesday was decent, though I tend to wish the show was as dark and trivial as the very beginning

rapid geode

its weird. cause tim directed some eps, and not others. and the reviews are sorta opposing. the funniest was one review going "this is just a teen drama with monsters, i hate it" and the next one under it "a teen drama with zombies, i love it!"

The network guy didn't know how to do the pin out

@opal night

if from machine to hub or router just use the one on the left

machine to machine use the one on the right

So router to a wall port (female) then wall port to laptop
So I run a cable from the router to the port then another cable from the other side of the port to my machine

not right

because the lan cable that plugs into it

@dusk oracle I got the wiring and stuff done
But I seem to be having some issues.
The two Ethernet/patch cables I'm using are working fine and I can connect my laptop to the router via lan directly

But when I plug everything through the port it's not working
It starts identifying and then stops
Says there is no cable connected
But then starts identifying and

Hey everyone, a business partner and I are tooling around with a concept. While we're both getting educated on Matrixes and Raspberry Pi's we're wondering if this is even possible to scale (considering chip shortage and adafruit's limit on orders). If anyone is willing to sit to assist I'd be extremely grateful, and would be willing to compensate for your time if someone knowledgable would be willing to jump on a call
I'd shocked tbh that adafruit doesn't provide an email, considering if this is viable we would be ordering in bulk

Yeah, those little crimped terminals are a pain. I usually buy wires with terminals already on them for small connectors like that.
