Oh yes, the glorious DIP-64 package (AKA "the skateboard"). However, Intel didn't even want to go as far as a DIP-24, let alone that magnificent piece of engineering.

Back when there were four major architecture choices (Fairchild F-8, RCA 1802, the related Motorola 6800 and MOS 6502, and Intel's 8008), I considered Intel's offering to be the most flawed. By the time the PC came out, there were even better CPUs available (Z80 comes to mind), but IBM went with the 8088 for complicated political reasons, even though it was already apparent to the industry that it was slow and saddled with bizarre engineering choices. As Intel realized their processors couldn't compete on power or performance, they pushed clock speed (the "megahertz myth") instead. The dominance of the PC, and the backward X86 architecture in general, has held back computing an estimated 20 years at this point. I can understand why Intel hitched their wagon to X86 after the Itanic debacle, but I do not consider it "decent". At long last, they're trying to cast off at least some of the glaring design issues by ditching the early 8 bit design, along with the 16 and 32 bit add-ons, keeping just the 64-bit support https://cdrdv2.intel.com/v1/dl/getContent/776648. As discussed above, there aren't even any native X86 designs in use, they're all kind of emulated because there's no practical way to get even a reasonably performant implementation of that hoary old ISA directly.

This is pretty accurate. Also Intel pushed hard early on to be first to market, so by the time their competition rolled out better designs they already had customers invested in their ecosystem.

I guess this shouldn't really surprise me but I'm actually really good at recalling the food words from languages tho. This led me to being in Barcelona and ordering off the menu like I knew the language (and therefore, them telling me about the special that we had to order) without actually having any real fluency in Spanish or Catalan.

Called my ISP to report a problem with a pole that needs immediate servicing. Utility company already switched wires onto the new pole, old pole about to fall over and is zip tied to the old pole with wire lol.

car's command controls have a standardized sensibility of some kind or not?
Because the last time I was training to get a driving license I did a mess, I've found difficult to adapt to the car sensibility, and since lessons do costs and are expensive I was hoping to find/build some kind of simulator

They tend to be similar enough, although there are quirks. Some will have more sensitive brakes, some less, some have faster responding steering, or nonlinear ("D") steering. However, the basic experience is similar enough that the knowledge transfers and you quickly adapt (as you're part of the feedback loop, you just adjust your inputs to get the desired effect)

Quirks in a car can be dangerous. My grandpa used to drive a opel corcia at 270 km/hr on public roads because the odometer was increment by 30 instead of 10 normally. He used to drive 3x the speed he though he was driving until he learnt about the quirk.

This will happen if you put egregiously wrong sized tires on the car. Like if you put a 14" tire on a wheel designed for 15" tires it can throw off your speedometer by quite a bit. The bigger the difference vs spec the more your speedometer will be off.

I had low profile tires once and my speedometer was consistently off by 10-15mph. I got many tickets because I literally didn't know how fast I was going.

Hello. Looking at the following formulas and the instructions to compute them. I tried to understand where the factors 2, 262144 and 131072 came from but didn't understand. The simplified equation for the sector 5 is T/2 + (Y - Z)/2. But in the instruction I can see that it is T/4 + (Y - Z)/2 * 131072. Can someone explain me how they end up with that ?

I suspect the 2 comes from the fact that it's trying to make a pulse symmetric about a particular point, so half the pulse is before it and half after. 262144 is an even power of two (2¹⁸ or 0x40000), I'm guessing it's related to the number of bits in the counter. 131072 is half that or 2¹⁷.

it depends on what you want to do - what i would do is install Linux first off, but that's my OS of choice - the biggie i suppose would be to install Python and learn a bit about that before lurching off and buying stuff (the Python tutorial is pretty decent)

One of the tasks in a recent GISHWHES was to modify a Teddy Ruxpin to talk along with a politician's speech. It may be they were thinking of doing so by creating a tape with the codes on it (they're basically just R/C signals modulated onto an audio carrier on one track), but I ended up programming an Arduino to drive the servos directly and controlling it with a Python program on a laptop to play back the animation in synch with the sound.

The Ruxpin servos aren't dedicated all-in-one servos, they're units with the motor and feedback potentiometer, and the circuitry to implement the function (basically a SN76004N and associated components) is on the mainboard with the audio circuitry. Happily, they're connectorized, so I can just plug the 5-pin connector onto some header on a breadboard and wire it to an Arduino.

That's not really the case. The Apple ][ was just some TTL chips on a board, a hacker's paradise. In the early Mac days, the pricing was nuts. These days, an Apple desktop is about the best value out there.

The reason I stay on Windows is simple.
Linux hardware and software support is generally terrible. I'm often not in a position where I get to choose what software I run too (e.g. I need Zoom for work, so I need it to run).
I want options when I buy hardware. I don't want to be locked into a certain keyboard switch, and/or layout.

funny story, i worked on superman returns, and did the plane crash scene. originally i had the pilots die, the wing take out an f22, and the plans slam right into the ground outside the baseball stadium. next day they came back and none of that was allowed cause they needed to tay PG. sigh.

I dont know specific. Juts that I had an interview once and they told me that they had apple servers a few years ago. So I asked them if they still had them / had mac or pc so I wouldnt leave the job interview

There are IDC Berg connectors that you can easily attach to ribbon cable. They can then plug into headers on boards.

That is how the Dupont style connectors work, it's just instead of contact+housing that's crimped on in one go, the contacts are crimped on and then placed into the housing.

Hey everyone, a business partner and I are tooling around with a concept. While we're both getting educated on Matrixes and Raspberry Pi's we're wondering if this is even possible to scale (considering chip shortage and adafruit's limit on orders). If anyone is willing to sit to assist I'd be extremely grateful, and would be willing to compensate for your time if someone knowledgable would be willing to jump on a call
I'd shocked tbh that adafruit doesn't provide an email, considering if this is viable we would be ordering in bulk

Yeah, those little crimped terminals are a pain. I usually buy wires with terminals already on them for small connectors like that.

That's a stereo phone jack. They're available in a few sizes, popular ones are 1/4" and 1/8"
