I suppose that would be specific to each item and what permissions/license they use..

In other news; My dad is bringing me some solder tomorrow, so I can finally get some of my projects done. 😄

#

I hope it's not leaded solder, but.. if it is, I'll use it anyway.

late fulcrum
#

Personally, I prefer leaded solder, but make sure it's electronic solder, not plumbing solder.

blissful roost

He's used all kinds of solder, so he knows what I need. 🙂

orchid zephyr
#

I like leaded solder because of tin creep, price, and flow, I’ve never had a good experience with lead free, it always freezes all crusty and cloudy. Not to say that lead free doesn’t work, and I’ve heard great things, but I just haven’t had any luck personally

#

And my iron oxidizes faster when tinned with lead free

#

The biggest issue though is that the blends of lead free I can find in stores are always pretty far from eutectic, and have a gummy plastic phase

tardy badger
#

I personally use 99% tin solder that is like 0.7% copper or something like that. Works great, looks great, tip of the iron is pretty nice.

#

For solder paste I use low temp bismuth lead free

vestal pier
#

yeah, standard SAC305 works fine for me, just higher temps and lots of flux

late fulcrum
vestal pier

does it have a standard ID?

#

ah, nvm, leaded

orchid zephyr
#

i once got this clipping of solder, and the rosin smelled great, there was a piney note, similar to bow rosin, but i only encountered it once

#

that was a rosin core, i use cello rosin for soldering, so it usually smells like that

I got all excited making purple basil pasta... Such a bright strong colour... and then when i cooked it it just turned green.

I should make some homemade pasta at some point

Oh yeah homemade pasta is pretty great. My spouse is eating Indian-vegetarian at the moment so I found an eggless egg pasta recipe that's actually legit.

I still need to do the real test: Can I make homemade ravioli with it?

My issue is that my wife can't eat gluten

And I am... not good at making gluten free pasta

Yeah, you are a real gluten for punishment there.

I’m confused by the comments that get made on my LinkedIn posts about boards I’m working on. Like just making jabs at how they look.. I just don’t get it

That's weird. To me your boards always look quite clean, design-wise.

It always seems to be from people who work for Chinese PCB/PCBA fabs

Which, I just don’t get. I’m not complaining about board quality in my posts.. so why take the time to make the comments

I just don’t understand it. It will probably be forever a mystery.

And maybe it’s just language barrier, 🤷‍♂️

tardy badger

Or drizzle them in oil and spices and lay on a pan and bake at like 400F/205C

You can do the same thing with kale

i got rid of the kale. pulled it out and gave it to someone

Welp

#

I just watched a 40+ minute video about what numbers are

#

Numbers are sets. It's set theory. Why is it all set theory, I'm baffled

whole jacinth
#

because the current trend for the formalist schools of mathematics is to base everything on set theory?

dusty citrus
#

;)

tardy badger
#

I think because everything tangible exists in sets, even nothing exists in a null set 🙂

dusty citrus
tardy badger
#

Which an interesting thing that’s always been hard to wrap my head around is the fact that a null set is simultaneously size 0 and infinitely large…

#

The infinitely large part is the thing I don’t understand because it’s a union of arbitrarily small number totals

#

Which should mean it isn’t zero but also is..

hasty quarry
#

Oh man

tardy badger
#

But it also helps explain why .99… is equal to 1

#

Lol

#

And the explanation is none of this conventionally makes sense

#

Or I should say it requires the same line of thinking

dusty citrus
#

A lot of math falls out from the very definitions.

tardy badger
#

Yup

dusty citrus
#

2 ^ 0 = 1
8 ^ 0 = 1
16 ^ 0 = 1

2 ^ 0 = 1; 2 ^ 1 = 2; 2 ^ 2 = 4..

#

You need that one so they said 'okay let's give you that one as anything raised to the (otherwise fictional) zeroth power'.

tardy badger
#

The more we study math and the universe, the less we understand about the fundamentals of our existence

#

In that the mysteries compound faster than the answers

dusty citrus
#

Nah it's just arfing cool. ;) Like the mandlebrot set: part of the Universe but unappreciated without first inventing a computer (computational machine that speeds up iterations enough to notice something like the mandelbrot set).

#

I don't take that as evidence 'we are living in the Matrix' and all that kind of extrapolation. It should be more than enough to say: we do not yet understand. Isn't this interesting. Let's look further.

tardy badger
#

I personally think the compounding mysteries are humbling

#

If you take the time to understand what we do and don’t know, it gives you a deep appreciation for what we have here on earth

Getting seriously ill is humbling. It's a good lesson that eventually nobody avoids.

I'm shopping for automotive fuses and very few of them seem to be UL listed. This surprises me, as I would think uncertified fuses could be grounds for the dealer denying a warranty claim should the car later have electrical problems. Do I have some kind of basic misunderstanding here?

lusty fossil
#

That surprises me too. Do they have other certs?

rapid geode
#
wooden schooner
#

The ones at the hardware store had no certification indicated on the package. Also they didn't have the form factor I needed (LP-mini). I ended up buying a small variety pack on Amazon that said it was UL listed on the product page but upon delivery it looks like it isn't -- currently waiting for them to get back to me about the certification number.

#

looks like a lot of product packaging just doesn't list the certification, hence amazon reviews like this one on a similar product

rapid geode
#

i see

ebon dew
#

looks fine to me. when he mentions ATO open. it's means you can probe the metal material on top of the fuse while it's still installed in the vehicle with a multimeter for continuity without having to remove the fuse for a physical inspection.

#

which is normal and a desired feature. not all fuses have that feature.

dusty citrus
#

UL Listings are surprisingly a lot less common as of late.

ebon dew
wooden schooner
#

Yeah, I don't see any certification indicated in the data sheet

ebon dew
#

is it required for your project? they're pretty much the main supplier of replacement fuses in the US.

wooden schooner
#

The first one says it is UL listed but does not give a certification number

wooden schooner
ebon dew
#

was there already a problem? or is this just piece of mind?

wooden schooner
#

Similar to how renters insurance can deny claims when you use non certified devices in your home

wooden schooner
ebon dew
#

because they're not going to balk because you used a non-dealer fuse if that's what you mean.

wooden schooner
#

I'd think they would balk at anything they can balk at.

ebon dew
#

bussman is what you'd get if you went to an automotive parts store for fuse replacements (advance, auto zone, oreilys, etc)

wooden schooner
#

Right but this is not good faith, this is warranty claims

#

Maybe they'll be good faith, I don't know. I was assuming they'd be stingy

ebon dew
#

well can you take a picture of another fuse and see if there are any physical or aesthetic differences?

wooden schooner
#

I'm sure the fuse is good but that's irrelevant. The certification specifically is what matters for a warranty claim

rapid geode
#

im not sure they fust will matter, unless its VW (they try to get out of any warranty claim)

ebon dew
#

The first page I linked has the fuse current profile which is part of the UL certification process. If you need an actual certification for the fuse contact Eaton, I'm sure they'll be able to pull that up. I'm not sure if the cert itself is publicly listed.

wooden schooner
#

Cool nice. I wonder why it's not public

ebon dew
#

because they have millions of products?

wooden schooner
#

So what?

dusty citrus
#

0.0001% of all claimants will have done this much due dilligence.

wooden schooner

Yep agreed

dusty citrus

Go to the dealer, ask them to replace the fuse, tolerate the eye-roll, get a signature &c. I don't know.

wooden schooner
#

Right, that's what I assume people do

#

I'm a trouble maker and I want to exercise whatever rights I have to not be locked into the dealer

dusty citrus
#

My concern would be counterfeit fuses that look exactly like the real thing. ;)

wooden schooner
#

I think I could just buy an overpriced OEM fuse from them and install it myself

#

The fuse might cost $2, but the labor charge would be another order of magnitude

dusty citrus
#

Have the conversations; they cost 'nothing' and you never know when you'll meet someone sympathetic to functional concerns.

rapid geode

wooden schooner

wooden schooner

#

I use a different mechanic though

dusty citrus
#

functional concerns means many would agree you have a valid point rather than .. whatever they want to characterize it as, wrt not valid.

wooden schooner
#

If I bought a fuse from my mechanic, maybe I could lean on them for a warranty claim even without paying them to install it

#

Ok this is getting to speculative to be real world useful but sometimes it be like that

Hello

#

Its

#

It's my soul

#

It's been looking for Thor's hammer for about 10 incarnations

#

What do?

late fulcrum
#

Hmm, souls are more the spiritual department, but Asgardian artifacts are the bailiwick of a few different departments (Department of Alien Affairs and S.H.I.E.L.D among them)

lean kettle
#

So I should look for the thought form of the Asgardian s.h.i.e.l.d Thor?

#

Or maybe I could go back to the ancient Thor comics

#

I don't even really know what the hammer does

#

All's I know is it must be mine

late fulcrum
#

Either of those should yield progress toward your goal. There is also Lego set 76209 or the 3dlightfx Mjolnir light.

lean kettle
#

It was a strange dream. But it was clear as day

#

I think I'll look at the legos

#

And see what the hammer does in old comics

late fulcrum
#

Reportedly, lifting the hammer is only possible by those the hammer deems worthy, so most of us might have to settle for visitation or virtual ownership.

lean kettle
#

Oh yes that's also a factor

late fulcrum

He was the good guy

#

That took me on my way after the massacre

#

I recall. He was fast on his motorcycle

really hope I don't die irl. Cause I think this is the thing I gotta do

#

I also saw the pope had the Saturn square

#

The 9 boxes with the numbers and it was leading him to me

#

But this but a dream. Clear as day tho

#

So to clarify. My dream said I've been searching for a godlike mallet . That there would be big trouble. But I'd be rescued and taken in the direction of (I don't want to reveal but) I'd be taken to the "earth mallet"

#

...it could be a deceptive dream. But why bother so much detail. Why not just oogie boogie scary Ghost dream and conserve power if it's not a sign

late fulcrum
#

That is a good question, and not one for which I have a ready answer

lean kettle
#

It also makes me question. Is there people out there in some kind of incarnation loop. But they want a "wind knife" or the all seeing spectacles of deity's" or maybe even the water of life

late fulcrum
#

Those are legitimate things to ponder, but are also among the vast array of answers I do not have.

lean kettle

Well I hope you get the thing that is the reason you do stuff. Now I must get in my flying saucer..... Jk my bed it's 11:45pm in NSW Australia

late fulcrum

An astronomy teacher asked their class to vote on the planethood of Pluto. They voted for it, and then the teacher pointed out there are more people in that class than in IUPAC, so you could consider their opinion to carry more weight. Better yet, one of the interim definitions of "what is a planet" excluded Earth by mistake!

rapid geode
#

pluto is a binary system, but i think after the new pictures it kinda does meet their rules

violet parcel

the other great prank would be to write "wash me" on perseverance camera while it's on mars

rapid geode

violet parcel

rapid geode
#

ha

#

violet parcel

a crash between a plane and a plane is something that should never happens

#

Like like a rank-and-file fight between a polar bear and penguins armies

rapid geode
#

trucks are always near planes

#

ha, a girl crashed her truck into the ramp snowplow. that was a fun day (white out, she wasnt hurt)

violet parcel
#

oh I thought you meant like a truck off the highway or the truck was flying

rapid geode
#

no

#

ramp equipment

crystal ore
rapid geode
#

ah cool

#

or warm

#

ha

violet parcel
#

the only probe you could send into the sun would probably have a neutronium body

#

but then the sun would be gone

#

and our solar system shortly after

#

replace by a supergiant or a nova or a black hole

rapid geode
#

sun isnt that hot on the surface, so you could probably get close for a few minutes

#

weather you could transmit the data i dont know

violet parcel
#

yeah the surface temperature isn't the problem

#

it's temperature that used to be at the core and get radiated out as infrared, UV etc

crystal ore
#

It's about 6000C, which I think is beyond the melting point of basically everything.

violet parcel
#

that would kill you way before the surface temperature

#

xkcd did the calculation once and if you could teleport instantly

#

you probably could stand on the sun for 6 nanoseconds

rapid geode
#

ive done cgi suns a few times. we juse paste nasa imager on spheres. every few years the quality and detail goes way up

tardy badger
#

You’d burn up before you got close to the surface of the sun

rapid geode
violet parcel
late fulcrum
violet parcel
violet parcel
#

so something as big as a probe would have enough gravity to knock the sun off it's orbit or make it collapse on itself and form a red supergiant

rapid geode
#

um

late fulcrum
#

I think you're off by a few orders of magnitude.

rapid geode
#

also, in imagination land

#

ha

violet parcel
#

unless a piece of neutron star ever fly near us

rapid geode
#

...

#

no

#

ha

violet parcel
#

what do you mean no? black holes can send gamma ray burst that are still damaging extremely far from them

#

and neutron stars are 2nd after black holes

#

it's not far fetch that a piece of mass can fly off and get detached like when a rotating blade hit a stone

rapid geode
#

they dont sneak up on other stars though

crystal ore
late fulcrum
#

Let's assume our probe is the size of a cubesat, and not hollow. That would be about 10¹⁷g. The sun weighs about 10³³g (it's not nearly as dense, but it's BIG). I don't see that throwing the sun out of orbit, collapsing it, or anything like that.

violet parcel
#

that is a lot of weight that would affect gravity along it's path

crystal ore
#

It's also not clear whether small chunks of neutronium would be stable. I'd generally expect them to go "sproing" without the self-gravity of a neutron star to keep it under extreme pressure.

late fulcrum
#

Yes, I think it would evaporate due to Hawking radiation.

violet parcel
#

even on the surface it's much described as a soup rather than a solid (but the center is solid)

crystal ore
#

Hawking radiation needs an event horizon, so I don't think that would apply to "regular" matter.

late fulcrum
#

Some neutronium at the core of the sun would presumably be stabilized by the gravitational and radiation pressure.

violet parcel
#

In any case it's an internet argument you don't want to be right winning 😄

rapid geode
#

O_o

violet parcel
#

"So turns out I was right it's ----" body shred to elementary particules and dispersed in the universe

#

While being close enough to observe a neutron star to see you were right

late fulcrum
#

Hence ihavenofish's brilliant "in imagination land" comment

violet parcel
#

Well if I can't see on from up close when I'm dead I'd rather there be no afterlife

crystal ore
late fulcrum
#

Intuition is of debatable value here, but it's all I have at the moment unless I start cracking some books and working some equations, but it's bedtime in my time zone, so while I'll be cracking a book, it won't be a theoretical physics book (although I've been enjoying Simon Singh's book "Big Bang" as bedtime reading lately)

rapid geode

violet parcel

rapid geode
#

ah

lusty fossil

How low did you go?

violet parcel

And they tell you they have to ship it by cargo ship

late fulcrum

violet parcel
#

And you need to make arrangements for a crane to pick it up at the destination port

lusty fossil
#

Wow

#

Interesting it only rotates one direction

late fulcrum
#

The biggest servomotor I could find in a quick search on DigiKey is 15kW and only weighs 76kg, so they could put it in a box and ship it UPS, no problem. However, it's not stocked, and says "Quote Required", so the first step would be to submit a RFQ.

rapid geode
#

i have a 7.5kw ac servo, it is about 50kg

lusty fossil
#

What's this hall effect throttle they speak of? And do electronic/programmable ones exist?

violet parcel
#

only 75kg ? I expected something like this to come with steel/titanium arms etc

#

and to turn like scales for trains or the likes

rapid geode
#

a tesla motor is several hundred kw, and only a few hundred kg

violet parcel
#

yeah but it's turning very low weight

rapid geode
#

these arent cast iron induction motors

violet parcel
#

in my mind a powerful servo would turn a 60 tons locomotive around a scale on the ground and such uses

rapid geode
#

ac servos have the highest power density of any motor

violet parcel
#

which mean they need to be really heavy and big to counterbalance something like a locomotive

rapid geode
#

locomotives use 3000kw field wound DC motors for driving (yes i did a documentary on that too)

late fulcrum
crystal ore
#

When I toured the Lick telescope observatory, they said that the whole dome gets rotated by a 1/2 hp motor, just geared the heck down and very well balanced.

violet parcel
rapid geode
#

yeah, people overestimate how much power it takes to move things.

#

typical industrial cnc machines only have 1-2kw servos for axis motion

#

my little cnc has 180w servos

violet parcel
#

It's not overestimating, the locomotive weight like 200 tons and the movable plate it's on is even more

#

so the arms on the servos have to support all that weight

rapid geode
#

yes but its not rotating at 6000rpm

#

you gear it down 500:1

#

and can move it by hand

late fulcrum
#

We had an electron injector at the particle beam lab that was the approximate size and weight of a locomotive. The hydraulic positioning system broke one day and we had to just push it around ourselves. Not even geared down, we just mashed on it with our hands, but it moved (albeit slowly). Granted, we had removed pretty much all friction from the equation.

that is a cake you're unlikely to accidentally pick up and eat

more likely to have a coffee with controlled pure water in it

slim shard

I think that is actually rather normal water, just the potential to have radioactive stuff in if the reactor it was connected to was having issues

#

I've heard the lines were often marked "CPW" and recited as "coffee pot water", only takes one person to not get the joke

violet parcel
#

so annoying to try to help someone and they never answers probing questions...

blissful roost
#

Or you ask someone a question that should have a simple yes/no answer..... and they reply with an essay.

violet parcel
blissful roost
#

I still don't get the question, but... No matter.

violet parcel
#

you guys just missed that it was answered in another channel by someone in purple but while I was in the other channel both you and the other answerer decided that I was being abusive towards adafruit or something. So it wasn't a discussion anymore but just a bunch of accusations which I didn't see a need to reply to. Basically

#

and it was too long to delete at that point otherwise I would have done that

blissful roost
#

Ohh, I decided on no such thing.
I didn't even imply such.

#

I was simply confused by the nature of the question.

violet parcel
#

I didn't see the datasheet, when I saw the chip I thought that was the "scientific name" of the breakout

blissful roost
#

Fair.

violet parcel
#

And I couldn't find it on internet so I was really confused about what the chip was or it was completely custom

#

So I asked the question in circuitpython help, then after a while and no answer I thought it was off-topic for circuitpython help despite my question starting from someone else question in there

#

so I decided to asks in projects instead since it seemed more on-topic there, meanwhile while going back to circuitpython a purple had answered it including a drawing from the datasheet that explained all the numbers and marks on the chip

whole jacinth
#

when Adafruit advertises a specific part number, they usually try hard to provide a genuine one, and take it seriously when there's evidence that they've failed at doing so

#

and modern chip markings can be confusing and not reflect the full part number, but you did seem to learn that too

violet parcel
#

basically I asked a question in two channels and it took a life of it's own in the other one

blissful roost
#

Definitely something that happens... Lol

violet parcel
#

I tried to explain a bit in projects but meanwhile the purple was giving out really good complete information so I felt it was rude to not ask follow up questions/thank them

#

and when I came back I saw that peoples thought I was accusing adafruit of something which was never my intent. I just couldn't understand why of all adafruit product this one seemed to be a complete black box

#

And besides no matter the vendor, if it's not "open" enough I don't buy it. Need to have a datasheet and a brand at the very least

#

That's how if I see an LCD for sale I can remove 99% of the products from the list

#

When I have a couple of choice left the 2nd big criteria is having pinsout, a driver, examples etc and the 3rd one is being able to find videos of peoples using it/answered forum posts about issues with it

#

ie: my first criteria is what happens if I have an issue with it

whole jacinth
#

sometimes Adafruit ends up with the only easily searchable copy of a datasheet, which can seem a little suspicious to people. it seems to sometimes be because the manufacturer has discontinued the part and chosen to remove the datasheet instead of keeping it online for reference (e.g., the LSM6DS33 was a particular one that i ran into)

violet parcel
#

https://www.adafruit.com/product/1667 don't seem to fit that criteria, no brand given, no datasheet, no manual, no brand markings on any of the pictures. google reverse image can't find it. And someone had an issue this morning where they can't use it on their PC. So at first glance something I'd never buy. Which is why I mention it in #live-broadcast-chat

#

they even say they found a chip while opening it which seems they have no idea either of what it is, and the chip is for the lcd panel, not for the whole screen

violet parcel
#

and if I can't the chip/component isn't much more than a paperweight

whole jacinth
#

i think it's reasonable to have different expectations of low-cost items that Adafruit resells versus the generally well-documented and open source products they design themselves

violet parcel
#

And I mean that's how I'm able to help peoples or not, it doesn't meet my expectations and i'm not able to help because I don't know enough yet without some documentation so I'd just state that I've reach the limit of how I can try to help with that and that somebody with more knowledge can help

stuck moth
#

the forums are a good place to ask for adafruit support too. there is an additional set of knowledgeable folks there

violet parcel
#

yeah madbodger will be back later and he was checking the ENDI info from the screen angle, something I have no knowledge of

violet parcel

got mine in may from pishop, I couldn't believe it until I had it in my hands

in forums I'd say that I allegedly will get one while it was in transit / shipping

#

that allowed me to seal my pi 2b+ in a case with a touchsreen for a future house control unit

#

I overpaid a little though because I didn't have a power supply for it or the correct usb cable or enough SD hardware in case things went wrong

prime bobcat

Anyone help with cleaning coins?

late fulcrum
# timid anvil Anyone help with cleaning coins?

There are lots of ways to clean coins, depending on how clean you want them and how much you care about minimum damage (basically, some coin collectors are more careful about rare coins than stuff they just want really shiny). One hotel chain uses clothes washers to clean coins so they shine like new.

violet parcel
#

Personally Id start with a bath of isopropyl alcohol 90% for a few hours, add water in it (preferably distilled) brush the coin to remove residue. That won't damage the coin except if you don't brush them off (leave a residue) and will make them clean in every sense of the word and remove every bacterias, dirt, and other disgusting substances left on it over the year as well as if there was ever glue on it

#

what you really want to avoid is acid or base unless you want green pennies

#

Personally the 1st step was alcohol so I could handle them without having to constantly wash my hand and being extremely careful where I put them

Hey guys I bought some stepper motor drivers, but I was given some slightly different ones with a different pinout. I'm wondering, what pin is the motor voltage pin? Is it the one unlabeled pin? I don't want to assume things y'know.

violet parcel
dark heath
#

Well, they're apparently for MKS but I wanted standalone ones. The product says MKS but the images on amazon were not correct, and I just saw the image and bought them lol.

What are the implications of having MKS drivers? I have multiple 3D printers but was looking to use steppers standalone for a project for once.

violet parcel
#

there seems to be tutorials for 2 of them with that chip

#

otherwise as a standalone you'll have to figure it out from the datasheet of the new chip

#

seems like you can forget the old 1.0 chip, different pins etc

dark heath
#

yeah I've seen some data about the chip itself, the pinout of the whole board just seems wacky, and I can't find a datasheet for it

violet parcel
#

seems like the 2.0 version has (better?) or (new?) uart features

dark heath
#

yeah, that seems like the change

violet parcel
#

the chip is from makerbase, was a bit difficult to find

#

but they use a driver give me a sec

dark heath
#

I was just trying to get it started a bit, doing the Vref and all and I realized there's no VMOT or anything

#

it probably is the unlabeled one, but its just a little suspect lmao

violet parcel
dark heath
#

ah yeah, I actually took a look through that document. I'm not the best with datasheets and couldn't fully understand how to translate that chip datasheet into an understanding of this pinout I was given, y'know? Because it's just the chip datasheet right

violet parcel
#

right, but I couldn't find anything else. the tutorials seems to sucks first thing they do is to put it on a big board like the robin

dark heath
#

yeah yeah, and they have some jumpers to denote step resolution (and some uart features?) but I'm just looking to get an okay basis in powering it up, and sending STEP/DIR signals really.

#

I don't know if its possible to just ignore the UART functionality 🤔
