Is your blue LED dead? :P
Hmmmm.... Iron Man is older than CSDL
When the astronauts landed in Cambridge
circuitpython(.)org/ide sounds cool and it could be cross platform
- will source libraries straight from the server
Iron Man is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was co-created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber, and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. The character made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963), and received his own titl...
I agree, solid blue is a good affirmation/feedback
Yeah, CSDL was founded in 1973, so a decade later, but Draper was around long before that doing sciencey things
But the Iron Man Wiki says nothing about Draper
copy copy copy
Urban legend!
Might be! Researching...
TIL
Google Chrome has webserial, but some work needs to be done before we can have a great working circuitpython.org/repl
I see a lot of people calling Draper "the OG Tony Stark" and similarly saying he's like Tony, but nothing to say that he was an inspiration for Tony [at least not specifically]
“Setting up a bot “ so we can have live crowd coding
I believe some people here looked into it a little a while ago
stuff like that https://www.serialterminal.com/
Cat cam will win if you let us choose
A bit of Node-red and OBS plugin... should be possible to make a bot. I have seen that a lot on Twitch.
Cat cam > code cam
Kitty! <3
Spook is such a beautiful baby
I thought you said boop discovery, lol
According to an article on mentalfloss, Stan Lee got the inspiration for Tony from Howard Hughes
I missed whatever happened XD
that looks pretty clear--it's obvious that you hit the ble workflow with the press. Nice job
Yay reading!
Slow reading > no reading
Autocorrect can be pain
I know there's a way to disable it for certain text fields
But hey, progress!
Welcome to the NVMe PCIe 4 club!
ohhh!!! Data science is lovely but eats storage and ram like no other
The last time I was pricing out maxed ram on a system, it was $12k.
BTRFS :O livin' on the edge, aren't we?
❤️ btrfs.
Maybe a livebroadcasting branch in github?
@rapid hornet can you move the deep divers role up in hierarchy... I’d like blue for a change
My poor nas has like 3tb free/33tb used.
I... think I was about that >~>
My main server is like that XD
Scott, full specs of your machine please? :O
I wonder how close yours is to mine
There's another CSV that's 11G!
Yikes! ... that's one HUGE CSV
Ohhhhh it's the provider reported data
ah, Nebraska has a law they're debating to have an independent group validate those reports
I tried zooming out so I could see more of the country and it just stopped loading
is the speed test logged by going to a location in the counties (not previously negotiated by the ISP) and having a third party run a test?
Bye divers... I’ll have to leave early today, thanks Scott for the deep dive.
Data dessert!
lol
Does it only do Washington?
I'd like to see my state [PA]!
Western nebraska where it's only dialup
That sounds like a crime against humanity
"It's a bit slow, but it works for me... by the way, I have 16CPU in my computer."
I can't hear your fan over my fan XD
My brother is an aid to a legislator and they're working on a law to help improve it. Buuut it's nebraska so they don't have high hopes
I have 16 cores too :D but it's like, 0 impact on system performance to load that page
Philly area, near Camden is where I am
Technically the lawbill is exclusively to appropriate funds to validate the reported speeds, so that when it's shown to be not accurate they can require funds be allocated to get faster speed internet out there
My hair is kinda long XD
I too go too long between haircuts
I wanna see the task manager of your machine while doing this XD
hairdresser have been closed a few times and for a very long time in Belgium... thanks to COVID. On 2nd and 3rd wave.
I cut my own hair the last time
= here
Outside of that one self haircut, I've had 1 haircut in the last... year and a half?
10/1 should be a crime
I think 20 synchronous should be the MINIMUM
That's a huge improvement for a lot of NE
yeah about there
And that's the motivation for the bill--it's not necessarily correct
Will there be anything to add service quality? Like, Comcast here offers the same general speeds as Verizon here, but the actual service quality and customer service is very bad
It is correct if you're testing and not letting anyone else use the line and you're testing Right next to the ISP, not in a house a few miles away
Your fight for fiber is not technology neutral, so it would be killing the non-fiber competition. Is that good for competition?
At least killing DSLs is very good
Killing non-fibre would be good for innovation
No decent provider should be doing DSL or similar, not even in 🇨🇷
That sounds sooo wonderful
5G towers will need multiple fiber or forget caring
Just saw that there is a collab editing platform that works with sublime (amongst others) and is 'free' for 5 public workspaces. Never tried it but may be fun
https://floobits.com/
Fibre killing non-fibre would make it "innovate/switch or die" for non-fibre companies, but there's nothing keeping them from moving to fibre
I wish I had more than 1M :þ
(I do, but I'm using wifi across the street from my business.. so 1M)
Scott, that Ziply might actually be fibre, but very very old -- early fibre internet services started with DSL-like speeds
Does that graphic show the number of people they serve? Because some of those look amazing, but if they serve 2 clients, it's still something of a internet desert
I have in theory 400/20 over cable... that is the best I can get here. It's enough (even if I would like more upload). But most people do not need such bandwidth.
Racsa 😦
haha that explains some of the nebraska values
Hey I showed up two hours late again ... but right on the WA part
Does the data separate residential vs. business, or is it all lumped together?
Lawnmowers? :O
nice background audio we have
I hope they are not blowing 🍃 .
more like cars
There's nothing wrong with leaves on the ground.
For a moment I thought my neighbor had started to cut their grass
Will the "backbone" follow if we go fiber to the desktop everywhere. Most people do not need that much and hopefully will not use it.
Advertised rates SHOULD be the promised rate!
This is really nifty. Is there any way to ... highlight lack of reliability between the advertised speeds and the provided speeds?
Honk honk! :D
....how'd my Macbook Pro 2013 get out there? And how'd you get it to be that quiet? Normally it's louder....
I have systems with fans MUCH louder than that.
Never understood how not hitting the advertised rates isn't false advertising
lol
It happens to me two. Scott has a nice mic, and I have some nice speakers. A while ago I had to mute to listen if the plane what there or here.
90db
My machines are all loud XD
THAT is a direction I'm excited to see!!
I'm almost under a flight path, I always know if its actually here! 🙂
They should only be allowed to advertise the minimum promised speed
Don't watch the NOVA special on electric planes then... They talk a bit about the pollution under the flight path...
And awesome end to the friday, my adafruit order just was delivered
What about when a provider prioritizes speed tests over standard packets?
It should not be zero
Yeah sounds better, if I lose service every other week does that mean the min. speed is zero?
Roads? Where we're going we don't need.....roads.
This is a fantastic project
If you're losing service every other week, you should be compensated in some way for downtime, especially if you're working -- if they promise a minimum of 100MBPS, they should suffer if they break the promise
Not sure if Verizon is being sluggish or something on the network is downloading without my knowledge
How does starlink fits into this maps?
Should Starlink be listed separately? 'cuz it sounds like it's going to be in a totally different class compared to classic satellite internet
Try SpaceX?
Hughes was InterNOT
Was that duck on stream or should I step outside?
"Starlink is available to a limited number of users per coverage area at this time. " I think its really beta still
BTW, I do need a better way to know the time of the stream.
One of my browser says the stream started 30 minutos ago, and the other one says two hours ago.
(for the time codes)
@gusty wedge if youre in the Deep Divers groups, you get reminders, IF you're logged into Discord which I was not today
it is beta still
You said it does NOT have the maps in the code?
I ment it for adding time codes to the document. I could only add one today and it's quite imprecise.
SpaceX is developing a low latency, broadband internet system to meet the needs of consumers across the globe. Enabled by a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites, Starlink will provide fast, reliable internet to populations with little or no connectivity, including those in rural communities and places where existing services are too expen...
I think a week or two ago I did added a bunch of topics to the time codes.
Starlink sounds interesting... If they can make it reliable, since the latency is so much lower, that'd be swell
Thanks for the show Scott!

We're gonna miss you!
Woo Hoo Vacation !
@rapid hornet Have some amazing vacations.
Thanks Scott
Have a nice vacation Scott! Bye everyone
Cat bath!
Thanks @rapid hornet for another excellent Deep Dive! And special thanks to @haughty quiver for being a guest!
Enjoy your two week break 🙂
Save the night sky
I like Starlink for Isla del Coco which is quite remote.
For the rest of the world, noup.
Maybe we should have a sad stream while Scott is away
starlink have the save the night sky thing
I have an old BLE Arduino...
Cocos Island (Spanish: Isla del Coco) is an island in the Pacific Ocean administered by Costa Rica, approximately 550 km (342 mi; 297 nmi) southwest of the Costa Rican mainland. It constitutes the 11th of the 13 districts of Puntarenas Canton of the Province of Puntarenas. With an area of approximately 23.85 km2 (9.21 sq mi), the island is more ...
Have a great vacation and some selfcare! Thanks for everything you've done and thanks everyone who joins! This is one amazing community
Enjoy your time off, thanks for the stream which I'll watch later. I'm excited to hear more about the BLE work
BTW, I'm going to Isla del Coco in a couple of months.
Bai Scott!
I still can't believe it...
have a great vacation
Lots of cat pets!
hey satellites internet connected with fiber great combo
ciao

Maybe the catcam will turn on every Friday automatically
Hehe, auto-catcam would be nice
maybe catbedcam too right @left pier
Just sit and chat and watch the cat for 2 hours
powered by circuitpython
lol
Thank you @rapid hornet
Should I stream at Scott's normal time next week and we can talk about how awesome Scott is? XD
@smoky island might have a guest stream or two
If he's streaming at Scott time, I can certainly get to see what his streams are like :D
Weekend streams are kinda hard for me
I don't envy his Inbox on return ;-P
lol
Mailbox full
They're fantastic streams. Very relaxed and step by step for what he's working on! I believe he also keeps the vods so you can look those up if you've got some time and are interested
I may do some on friday's while scott is out. If so it'll end up starting 1 hr later than normal deepdive time.
I wish I had more time to watch things DX but I do like chill streams
I was working on a few things while watching this, lol
@smoky island If you do stream next Friday, give me a heads up -- I'll see if I can hop on to assist.
Will do. Thank you
I dunno about my fellow Deep Divers, but I wouldn't mind getting a ping if the slot is being taken by a guest
I suspect John will go long next two Fridays
JP typically streams on Thursdays 🦥
Though he does switch up as needed. It was a nice Friday today, three hours of excellent streams.
I certainly enjoyed it!
We need a @deep_foamers group 🙂
Lol
🧽
Keep it real.
Keep it foamy.
Iron Man is the BEST!
Other than Scott and all of Adafruit 🙂
Something is foaming up?
I'll be streaming this morning working on stubs and some circuitpython org projects. Hang out with me here in the chat, on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XStm-Qmnxw
Does 76 has arm laptops or only x86?
Another nice one is the Pine laptops, but I won't have any money for the following months, so I won't have any 🙂
Hey everyone!
Audio is ok.
btw, if you are on linux, and you have a webcam, maybe there is a nice use for the rotary encoder. You can focus the camera by using video for linux. Something like
cmd = "v4l2-ctl -d " + dev + " -c focus_auto=" + str(focus_auto)
(I'm still looking for a portable way to do this)
👋
I have played a bit with actions, nice to learn together.
Yeah, that focus scott uses if extra cool.
Sony ZV-1, I have one.
Just a heads up, if you are doing long live streams on the ZV-1, the battery will run out. The USB charging is lower power than the camera uses. In my testing it can do 5-6 hours. Since I use this as my main Zoom meeting setup, that wasn't enough. Had to buy a "fake battery" and a mount adapter. Now I can stream indefinitely.
Hi everyone.
@smoky island is this uploaded anywhere yet. My PyCharm is hungry...
sdist = source distribution
source distribution
Yes, use two cores to compile C stuff.
Well, jobs in general, not only C stuff. (I'm mad at make -j# because I'm compiling gcc at the moment...)
stubs:
@mkdir -p circuitpython-stubs
@$(PYTHON) tools/extract_pyi.py shared-bindings/ $(STUBDIR)
@$(PYTHON) tools/extract_pyi.py extmod/ulab/code/ $(STUBDIR)/ulab

check-stubs runs stubs and then mypy
Makefile
Description-en: optional static typing for Python
Add type annotations to your Python programs, and use mypy to type check them.
Mypy is essentially a Python linter on steroids, and it can catch many
programming errors by analyzing your program, without actually having to run
it. Mypy has a powerful type system with features such as type inference,
gradual typing, generics and union types.
.
This package provides the command-line interface.
mypy it's a deb package as well.
I think you only need to call twine like you are doing on your repo, and use the same path that is specified for the stubs.
I tough the github actions for circuitpython where using a docker image with stuff preinstalled, but looking at it now, it seems it's using stock ubuntu.
That's a nice way to speedup the builds quite a bit.
Yes, I think you can comment a bunch of boards out to speed it up. Maybe something else will break...
You'll need to add your TWINE_USERNAME and TWINE_PASSWORD to secrets.
Correction the PYPI...
It lets me add PYPI_USERNAME on my fork of circuitpython
👋
It's HOT out!
CI angry
idk if works for github actions tho...
nice hack - ive been trying to find a utility for this encoder
We need that but with bicycle foot pedals 🙂
shakes fist at yaml
There is a step missing called need-pypi . It might have been removed weeks/months ago when they stopped uploading the stubs.
It was last uploaded to PyPi may 26 2019
It also looks like it was Travis back then, not Github Actions
Because it's on a Branch it will never generate a valid version for PYPI
Or I've not figured a way before.
You might be able to work on foamygut/circuitpython/main. Maybe!
*foamyguy - sorry
It does something like git --describe --tags <I don't know what else> to figure out the version.
I know the problem but I don't know how to fix it for this.
It expects a VIRGIN git checkout matching what is on git
As soon as we add files git calls itself dirty
Further up the log
Normalizing '7.0.0-alpha.3.dev.18+gb1bd345c6' to '7.0.0a3.dev18+gb1bd345c6'
ports_windows is to check the build process will work on Windows with msys2 installed
It will be a problem because there are newly created files (the stubs) which have not been uploaded to git.
Although...
if there is a .gitignore entry covering the stubs directory, it might work.
A question about github.com/circuitpython - does Adabot run on it?
nice
I'm playing with the docker image with dev stuff preinstalled. -> https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/fede2/circuitpython-builder
Now I'm trying to integrate it with actions, but it's queuing my tasks so it won't be ready in the next 5 min...
It'll be fine ... but confusing
LOL
If you're changing the repo as well, you'll need to change the github urls inside README.rst etc
Sorry, docs/index.rst
I'm still queued in github-actions. Maybe for the next stream 😦
test
Started 20m 5s ago ```
Github has been slow and flaky this last week
Less cryptocurrency folks wrecking it...
I would love if there was a way to run actions locally.
Yeah, they use it for mining.
Look for self-hosted runners. But it only runs after you've pushed to a branch.
Nice, will look into that.
I have a nice cluster with a bunch of xeons here.. there's no reason for me to wait... (still waiting)
(Slowly replacing xeons with riscv stuff... not more x86 for me, thanks very much)
@smoky island Thanks for the stream, was very nice. I did not know about stubs weirdly enough.
I'll have to switch editors, I think mu doesn't have stubs support.
Have a great weekend everybody
Thanks!
Thanks all! hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
Desk of Ladyada - Macropad Bringup & Calculator Py https://youtu.be/Y0RQu_qvGO0
This week on the Desk of Ladyada we're doing the bringup of our hopefully-final revision of the RP2040 macropad we're working on. Arduino is working solidly, and CircuitPython is getting there. We have to get the OLED driver bugs ironed out but the hardware seems solid! Next up, we've acquired a TI calculator running a fork of CircuitPython. Let...
Reminds me of the games we played back in the TI-82 days... Drug Wars would have been so much more interesting..
😄
Very fun live feed. This made me go to my shop to show off my (heavily worn) Ti-nspire. Honestly, this bad boy is where I learned that coding provided real-world solutions. Since then, I have enjoyed many of the adafruit products as a product design engineer specializing in rapid prototypes.
LOVE that pointer Lady Ada is using. Where can I get one of those?
Hewwo! I'm here late, 2x to catch up XD
First time on discord. Is this the live show? Doing Digi-Key right now?
I wish I had a fancy color TFT graphing calculator back in school...

Gotta question for Lady Ada. What are the Pros/Cons of Mosfets and Relay Modules? I have a RaspberryPi 4 with Octoprint and an Ender3 Pro. The PSU is 24v, and I'm powering the Pi via the PSU. NOT via the GPIO. Ultimately, I am trying to turn the Ender3 pro off and on via Octprint, but confused which are better suited for the Pi. Mosfet or Relay Modules?
Bye❤️
Great show, goodnight
Ha, fun surprise live feed.
Bummer. Submitted my question too late.

+1 to the cephalopod
I feel like a Trinkey with a cephalopod mascot should have wires coming off of it... like antennas
I vote panda 🙂
Relays 100%

So no Deep Dive on Friday. You know what that means @smoky island ! 🙂
yup, next two fridays
Enjoy your time off, @rapid hornet !
Makes JP's Python Parsec more necessary ;-P
Tod I love that! That would be such a fun toy\costume addition

Idea: Slider Trinkey as a USB keyboard. The slider selects the key to send and the captouch pad sends the key. it's the preferred way to send tweets, as it lowers the number of tweets per day you can send. You have to know what slider position selects which key, but you're a hacker, so you know, you know?

Bye JP! thanks!
Right on, thanks for stopping by!
Thanks JP!
Thank you Sir!
I still need to figure out what to do with my defective one since it can't do an OLED, lol
Darn, just missed it DX
@teal river did you get a defective product?
detective John Park
Yeah, I had originally ordered a Slider Trinkey a couple weeks ago -- danh did troubleshooting with me, and I got an RMA, but it was out of stock at that point. But now I've ordered the replacement :D
🕵️♂️
The slider was faulty on mine
ah OK, got it.
There was a whole adventure of me learning how to build CircuitPython so I could squeeze OLED libraries into it, only to find later that the hardware couldn't do I2C... long story short XD
ah, interesting
You may be able to adapt @cinder wind 's QT Py rotary encoder method and bolt a fader directly to it.
Did the Slider Trinkey slide into everyone’s Carts?
lol
Yeah, I should be able to attach basically anything that isn't I2C on it -- the slider just didn't change resistance when sliding [until after I dismantled and reassembled the casing of the slider, but I damaged the pads of the Trinkey and the pins on the slider, so there was no hopes of getting it back together]
@teal river you should soon be able to desoder the ATSAMD21 off of that and sell it for a few hundred dollars.
Worldwide shortages
Yeahhh
No, just joking.
I thought so XD
My GPUs, on the other hand... I could make a pretty penny by selling, since I got them at MSRP
Yikes. GPU madness.
Yeah. I could make several thousand dollars... Or I could continue using my GPUs, lol
Thinking of selling a couple sheets of plywood I've got and buying a Lamborghini.
Lol
if only Adafruit could figure out how to make 1/2" Baltic Birch Trinkey Wood GPUs, they'd be rich!
I just got the back in stock notification, lol

are we betting on youtube or twitch this morning?
Twitch
both are good

i was like is that metal
you can 3d print vices/clamps for holding your wood in the cnc mill, then if you mill over them, you print a new one. 🙂

"she comes in colors everywhere..."
@split gazelle One of my favorite vises is the dremel vise, with this fella for weird shaped materials:

oh cool! i've seen that around, good to know it works
And it's also a standalone vise -- detaches from the clamp
And it can also hold a dremel
Only complaint is that it's mostly plastic, so it can't handle high heat or heavy use. But if you play nicely with it, it'll last a while.

Great thanks. 🙂 Gotta plan a head & make sure I got my money ready. 😄
TL;DR the treat is finding out.
Can anyone write these learn guides?
Your learn guides are da bom
There's such a strong financial interest with locking down documentation and only allowing "certified" repair. Some publicly traded companies announce during their stockholder meetings that their repair division may account for 40-60% of their revenue.
Think about that -- instead of making good, innovative products, some companies have a vested interest in making things as hard to fix as possible. And depending on your industry, you might be locked into using those products -- and their repair division.
Right to repair is so important.
They're more than just the BOM, they're also instructions! 😄
@waxen thistle there is also big money going into disinformation campaigns to confuse voters by scaring them that info threatens their security. Openness BUILDS security
Love the parts counter... that's new for the made in ny videos I think.
we need more QT Py2040s
Openness and communication is disruptive. Some embrace change, and some fear it.
robot make other robots the thing from star wars
@open girder Q: Can the selective soldering machine be used to bridge pcb jumpers, so that a knife is not needed to open the jumper?
is it a crane making a crane ? what madness is that ?
Love watching cranes get built or elevated
It's downright craney
@autumn turret have you seen crane build itself higher
I have! It's genius!
what ? they have become self sufficient ?
Could've watched it all day, but my break was over :/
You need a crane to get the parts up that high. People still running them.
@upper sandal official no, not self sufficient. But the crane operators are disappearing off the face of the earth in droves
I think cranes are way dangerous... (specially since they use unprotected wireless commands, but in general... they are to heavy)
people have no idea the dangers of unprotected wireless devices
That's not a socket, that's a monopoly piece!
noup.
Oh, not to scale :/
Wasn't ALF from Mill-Max?
I teach a wireless hacking class in 🇨🇷 , and yes, things are way to scary.
Conductive Top Hats!
I'm in IoT security so I know things too @gusty wedge
The s in IoT stands for security.
But there isn't a...
That's a good mindset, thinking about security when designing and implementing IoT & wireless tech. Encourage that as much as you can.
the reason there is no s is because consumers don't demand security, therefore product management doesn't prioritize it. Someone has to champion it (says me, the former Chief Privacy/Security Officer of Jibo)
Yes Security by design.
Part of the SDLC
No security, and no fallback if the manufacturer/service provider shuts down
I've lost count on the IoT paperweights I've heard about.
Wow, so this socket was designed for future compatibility? It's amazing that it's "transparent"
Right. People get locked out do to GOOD security sometimes (secure boot with no one to sign OS anymore)
Next project, I need to make an IoT paperweight
So that doesn't count those that are too light to be used as paperweights?
Q: Could the Mill-Max 3305s be added to a NeoKey as "aftermarket" part?
❤️ NPI as always. There hasn't been one that I'm like "yeah, I know what that is.. not need to pay attention" 🙂
They look like antenna connectors on the bottom :þ
And that answers my question!
NPI is such a gem. I've been introduced to awesome products and tools that have made my life easier 🙂
Could they be used with rotary encoders, like the Neokey Trinkey?
I love NPI, even in a part shortage it still provides immense value
very useful and interesting connector
@open girder That would maybe be something worth stocking?
Product failure, is an option 🙂

I have no idea why I need one but I ordered it anyway!
Remembered your code @ionic garnet ?
Yup
True that
Stargate of keycaps
That's for the people who complain that adafuit makes it too easy... now they can complain also that it's too cheap 🙂 :þ
Q: why do some boards use dotstars and other use neopixels?
Q: What kind of clearance do you need between cap touch pads on a PCB?
Q: I know circuitpython doesn't handle irqs (those are handled in C code). Can it be done in the inline assembler? I am looking to solve some limitations of LoRa lib vs C++ version
I'll be moving to a new house in the next weeks/month. I'm sooooo afraid that the SMD boxes will open mid transit making all tiny things un-recognizable 🙂
Good luck!
Duct tape!
@gusty wedge when ppl complain about too easy, they are ignoring the simple fact that easy is good. It leads to curiosity, innovation, and lifelong interests
Usually, the folks who say "you make it too easy" are doing so more as gatekeeping
I love that it's too easy... I'll be teaching some park rangers from Isla del Coco in October, to program with hardware and
This would not be possible like that just a few years ago.
I am bringing this stuff to kids to get them to fall in love with STEM
easy leads to doing stuff without giving up
I'm pretty sure it cannot be done right now. With the caveat in CP 7 and the update from micropython there was some support for native code (but I'm not sure if its even working yet).
What a great way to waste an RP2040 - In a keycap!
That's awesome of you to be teaching others! 🎉
I (thanfully) blame @rapid hornet for getting us all into fast work flows...
that's the conclusion I came to for CP 6
those slim key switches look awesome
I've very exited because park ranges are basically nature's police. They don't have any type of training on computers. I've already done some labs, and they just love understanding and hacking hw.
I don't think the inline assembler is on in Circuitpython
Ooh I want an Adafruit keycap! A Circuit Python one too!
I hear several times "Is that it? wow, that was easy" and you see them playing with neopixels strips.
Are any of the keys laser safe ?
squid
🦑
@autumn turret it could be done with a native C object linked in. Sometimes the work I do requires hardcore stuff. It's almost as if I go searching for hard stuff to do for fun
squid

Squid
squid!
Squid

Panda friend
suidz pls!
Question for the show —- how difficult would it be to make a Trinkey that has a Apple lightning connector ? I know there is a MFi program … just curious if it’s feasible .. and I’d rather give the extra money to Adafruit than to Apple for a USB conversion cable
squid
But I do feel bad for the panda...

I can't choose
question: any ideas where to learn about designing and manufacturing MEMS?
only because lady ada said vote for panda

squid!
Pandas don't have chromatophores... Squids will work for then e-inks have more than 3 colors/.
squanda
What about red pandas, @gusty wedge ?
again, it's only 3 colors.
But eink displays, for now, are only up to 3 colours (in my price range anyway)
For us international peeps on my next visit to NYC do you have factory tour ?
the squid will be future proof, for when they get cheaper.
new einks mean new mascots, no need to future proof 😉
they don't sadly
Good point @upper sandal
(more mascots is more better)
And BTW, my dog's name is Panda, and it has more than two colors. (it has one
eye, like David Bowie)
I came across some code browsing a library source where there was a function that took inline assembler as a string and executed. Or I may have been hallucinating
your dog is named panda, I know a rabbit named wolf, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria !
you might be thinking of PIO on rp2040
Q: O' did you guys decide on using the panda or the other character for that one thing?

yes. I should have stated. I'm all about RP2040 for now

Can someone remind me where the source of all the little changes to language and software practices to be more inclusive is? I am CTO of a outsourcing company. We develop software for clients worldwide. I want to start coaching engineers about this topic. Our clients may not care or even want changes, but like @open girder said, it starts with a drop
this is a good reference: https://www.hanselman.com/blog/easily-rename-your-git-default-branch-from-master-to-main
Are there deeper issues than renaming master to main?
Hmm, wonder if - in honor of Mosfet, if Phil & Limor could have a file of various Adafruit customer cat pics that a random cat pic from that file would show & then they could do "A moment of Zener & CUTE Kitty" at the end of ever show?
it started with renaming the use of slave
makes sense
Not particularly, but there might be CICD and such defaults that make switching difficult.
I love it. It will p!ss off exactly the right people (the ones who need to respect diversity)
A worthwhile battle.
I take delight in that. After nearly 40 years in this business, I'm pretty flame resistant.
👍
I'd like to know, or understand, why some are so resistant
because they fear change. They think they deserve entitlement and feel equity is a threat to entitlement. It is indeed, as it should be.
If they fear change, why learn new programming languages? Or operating systems?
^^ broader issue than just the name change
Different kind of change. They fear social change. The core issue here is respect and ending racist ways of the past. This is the trigger issue.
It's a complex human problem
humans are complex. emotions logarithmically so
Thing is, is it's really not all that complex - it's just people make it seam so complex
Yuppers
yeah I buy that. Simple issues. Complex people!
Be kind to yourselves, be kind to each other. Recognize that valuing others doesn't mean that you lose value yourself. There's enough value to go around that we all can have it. We all should have it.
Right on
👍
I think self respect is a core issue at the heart of the "divide". In my observation the people who are most bothered by other people's life choices or race/religion/... are the ones with the least actual self respect. So we have to somehow help them too to really overcome some really damaging and challenging aspects of human society
Very true & well put.
signing off to go play with my new toys. Really appreciate that you folks here care about each other and strangers too. It's almost miraculous to come across a group with that as a default behavior. The pic is today's mail
Have fun, and don't stay up too late playing with your new toys! 😄

wow that was cool
That parsec music disagrees with me too -- the last note or so where it statics out (sorry, not an audio engineer) is rather.....unpleasant. So I totally fathom the frustration your feline friends feel.
"wrong notes" = jazz
my jazz piano teacher, "You're never more than a half-step away from a good note."
"randomly hitting letters on a computer keyboard" = naming a "gaming" monitor ⌨️
So by that association, jazz players are those who name gaming monitors 😛

hard lead (oof)
nice sounds
JP's music box.
I've been playing music on a off for ~25years, and I just can't get scales in my head. This might be very nice way of learning them, finally.
(I have terrible memory.. I think...)
Sounded excellent!
Give briny turbo a try: https://github.com/rsbohn/briny-turbot/blob/main/src/remidi.py -- Give it a root note and it will give you a major or minor scale.
i somehow remembered that solenoid player what @split gazelle have build from that JP keypad
Reminds me of playing the "pedals" on a organ, or like the bass John Paul Jones used to play on a the songs he played keyboard.
it can definitely turn into a rabbit hole 😺
yeah i've been hoping to do some stuff with her libraries at some point. great stuff
sometimes not sending noteoff can have undesirable effects 😅 especially with more robotic applications
Hope you have a nice break.
Thanks John! Enjoy your time off!
Indeed, enjoy your time off @haughty quiver! 🏖️
yes have a fantastic break!
Park in vaca making tunes
so wait, John, you're not live streaming from the plane?
yuck, planes. (lots of CO2)
Thanks for the stream, very cool topic. I'll probably build me one to learn scales...
Thank very much all!
Thanks @haughty quiver ! Enjoy your vacation!
@waxen thistle it's looking like things will be fairly quiet on the work front. I will stream tonight at starting at 5pm central (1 Hour later than normal deep dive start time). I'll plan on pinging the deep divers role closer to start time in case they are looking for something to watch / hangout.
@smoky island where do you stream?
Twitch and youtube. I put links in here when I start.
ah, thanks
Thunderstorm here has knocked out power 😩 . 🤞 hoping it comes back shortly. But wont be able to stream tonight if not
good luck
I have a small gerbil wheel, a few feet of metal wire, and some magnets.
I'm sure we can MacGyver a solution....
Put thermodynamics and Gaussian laws to good work
While we wait 🙂

Ho...
has just returned. Should be on at normal time tomorrow morning. Hopefully mother nature is more relaxed next friday
I'm about to get going with the stream this morning. Working on some CircuitPython libraries. Hang out here in the chat, on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cagT3MuzXs or twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Morning @smoky island
I am in a happy mode. Finally finished the 6 month project yesterday - (re)-organizing and cleaning up the lab.
So now I can start tackling NEW projects! 🙂
o/ Morning all!
# assume bytes_io is a `BytesIO` object
byte_str = bytes_io.read()
# Convert to a "unicode" object
text_obj = byte_str.decode('UTF-8')
Afternoon all
What is calling with open(filename, 'rb'...
with is safer for random errors as a general principle though isn't it?
if (conditionA):
file = open(...)
else:
file = get_it_another_way
with file:
do the file manipulation code
it will auto-close at the end or on error
What about putting with indented stuff into a function call, and
with open(filename, 'rb') as file:
head_process_function(file)
else:
#byteio
head_process_function(filename)
it should still close or __deinit__ whatever is on the with line
I think when it says "type of bitmap" it means you pass in a bitmap class.
RLE => Run length encoding, a type of very simple compression
woo! Nice!
deep dive with foamyguy!
would pyb_file_obj_t be incompatible with a bytesio object?
Oh. Live Discording.
What if ignoring c, we look at how the data is ordered for the open(filename, 'rb') vs the bytesio object?
I mean, I missed the beginning so I could be thinking of it wrong, but maybe we don't need to mess with the c layer at all and can just have a 'prep' function for bytesio that makes it look like an opened file for the rest of the code workflow?
Ah Ok, thanks for walking back through all of that
Oh yeah, translate will compress your error string
Woo! Something Happened!
Have to nip out for a while, hopefully back before the end, if not have a great weekend everyone.
Isn't that leading ! just for the mp.obj...[argfile].u_obj variable and that alone
Nope looks like I read it wrong
ah the necessary git workflow hiccups. Never fun, but always present
Hi all.
Appease the god of thunder.
"Time is an illusion. Lunch time, doubly so."
Will download the video and watch it this afternoon.
Have a good one!
Bye and thanks!
Thanks, Tim!
Thanks all! hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
And glad you're power's back, that storm rolled through my area and knocked it out for a lot of folks as well
Yep, the outtage map was looking very busy last night around me.
Out of curiosity, what do you use for download? Want to do this too, for when Wifi isn't available to avoid chewing through mobile bandwidth, or watching ultra-low res version (or both)
youtube-dl. I watch very little videos live... mostly adafruit's.
This tool has a way to limit the bandwith, and I also love to reduce the resolution. (very little videos need 4k...)
+1 for youtube-dl. It is an excellent tool. For Twitch-only streams, there's an open-source project called "TwitchLeecher". Not as flexible or as configurable as youtube-dl, but it's pretty decent given the lack of other options.
Good evening everyone!
Desk of Ladyada - The Desk of Ladyada - STEMMA seesaw in Arduino with megaTinyCore https://youtu.be/6mPpvNe6F1Q
OK it was a little rainy out yesterday so we finally got around to porting our CMSIS/arm-gcc 'seesaw' core over to Arduino. Thankfully https://github.com/SpenceKonde has written an awesome Arduino core for this chip so we were able to get up and running very quickly! Check out their tindie at https://www.tindie.com/stores/DrAzzy/ Using an eval...
i love DoLA
Hi everybody, this is a nice break from staring at SPI logic traces
Good, got a new logic analyzer so using it for good (or trying to) you?
