Folks, watch out for those little lipo batteries - ones not sold by adafruit - can have reversed polarity. I learned that when one I got from amazon and it let the smoke out when I plugged into my pygamer.
@fallen siren π
@lavish patrol s'ok the Pygamer survived. the battery didn't!
Static again as John's hands moved close together near his mic, could be a loose wire?
every once in a while there's a burst of noise from it
It's unpredictable and inconsistent -- which makes for a fun and interesting time troubleshooting.
@haughty quiver Muted again!
Lol. Gone again.
Last thing we heard "not blow up the show"
Again, no audio sir
oh the irony
To mirror and expand what @fallen siren said about batteries -- sources of power aren't something to be trifled with. Cheap lipo or 18650 batteries can have "really bad results". Buy from trusted, reputable sellers. And even then, use best practices and be safe π π
Thanks for the fun show
@haughty quiver You made it. π
@haughty quiver [in sign language] Thank you for another awesome show!
Thanks @haughty quiver
Great show - yet another clever idea, thanks @haughty quiver
Thanks! Excellent show. We also found out that it's really live!
Nice music
oh poor John
Chipmunks!
Chipmunks make for nice holiday beats.
Also, you so funky
Good night folks.
I would like to add a microphone to my Pygamer. Does adafruit sell one that can be plugged into one of the stemma? connectors
I think this https://www.adafruit.com/product/4346 but you'll need a STEMMA QT to STEMMA connector, which I don't recall if we're selling yet
for now you could combine these two: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4397
@haughty quiver TY I want to do the EdgeBadge TensorFlow 'stuff'. I think the Pygamer and the EdgeBadge are basically the same apart from Pygamer not having a microphone.
Ah, yes very cool.
@waxen thistle Agreed. I bought from amazon because adafruit's UK vendors were/are not selling the adafruit ones - marked 'PK' one 'gotcha' is that even though they have keyed connectors, the manufacturers (in this case marked 'PL') chose to assemble with reversed polarity.
I hear ya, beware third parties. Beware Amazon specifically. Even "Shipped by Amazon from Amazon" products might get pulled from third-party stock due to the inventory-sharing agreements Amazon has with resellers.
So even if you spend more for a seemingly "genuine" product direct from Amazon, you could easily get a third-party counterfeit/non-genuine/reversed polarity item.
This happened with me with the Art of Electronics book. It wasn't until I showed Amazon AoE's counterfeit page when they refunded my money. Which I turned around and promptly spent at Adafruit as they're a trusted reseller.
As Han Solo once quipped: "No reward is worth this."
I have to admit, I don't think I've ever even heard of counterfeit books. AoE you say? I have a copy of 2nd Ed I bought 28 yrs ago. People hold it up as the definitive text but I found it too... dense. I seem to recall that it was originally the text for a single term course in Electronics - I can't see how you could ever get through it in 10 or 12 weeks, even if you studied 24/7.
Counterfeit books are absolutely a thing, sadly. Especially with higher value books, such as those used for college texts. It's something where you have to be really careful about where you source the products you buy. Another feather for Adafruit, no pun intended π
[But nothing beats borrowing books from your local public library.]
Ahead of the broadcast.. I gotta say the PyPortal Pynt looks Cuteeeeeeeeeee π

Good evening all you wonderful folks!
π hey hey everyone!
π
wait... owl man?
Batman approves. π¦
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
That is so cool, @clear matrix
I approve of the top tier tripod and ballhead to hold the wreath π
Yeah, that's really cool, @clear matrix !!!
wireless lights. wired headphones. i approve! π
@waxen thistle Is that a Manfroto?
@muted mesa totally agree
@analog acorn I think so -- the ballhead might be also a manfrotto or a gitzo? Hard to tell with the printing. Regardless, all really slick stuff that'll hold the heaviest cameras -- or wireless lights π
It's a pulsar.
@waxen thistle Right? I had to grab things from where I was shooting photos for the guide, and realised it was perfect.
@waxen thistle Cameras, or.... <looks behind himself at the Celestron HD14 tripod>
I'm just thrilled to see @sage aspen (or anyone) doing Raspberry stuff.π
The ball head is a Manfrotto with a Gorilla Pod ball head on top. π
Thanks @upbeat coral
I have a mobile phone clip for the Gorilla Pod one, so we stacked them.
@clear matrix I have a soft spot for Manfrotto -- it was the first tripod I bought back in college back in the early 2000s, and it's still in use today... sitting next to me as we speak π
@waxen thistle This one is my partner's, but I have one at home. He's had this one for ages, mine is more recent.
@upbeat coral Stand by! I have a Sphero RVR with a Raspberry Pi autonomously controlling it....
It's one of those brands where new or used, they'll last for many years, many cameras, and many wreaths π
@sage aspen sweet
@muted mesa The important things π
@clear matrix What do you think of the phone clip? I'm starting to research them, might have a need for one soon.
@waxen thistle I did destroy a Manfroto tripod once. If you need to do that, shoot in salt water for a day and forget to rinse it out....
@analog acorn I was reading the first part of your comment, how did you manage to do that? But then....salt water would happily do that.
@waxen thistle It's a 2-part 3D printed clip that uses a hair elastic to hold the phone between the parts. It works pretty well, but it's specifically designed to fit in a Gorilla Pod ball head clip.
My only complaint is my tripod is big, bulky, and tough. A bit of a pain to haul around. Can't have everything π
@waxen thistle I got a link from @haughty quiver the other day for one he's using that's super cheap and he really likes it though. I can send you the link if you'd like.
No such thing as too much data
Hair elastic is awesome stuff π looks at the pile I have for my beard so I don't get it caught in a drill press/stove/soldering iron/etc
Excellent!
@clear matrix Absolutely, I'll also pick his brain on it later too π
@upbeat coral Actually, the LHC Atlas experiment generates 300 billion events per second.... Kinda too much data.
@clear matrix Gracias π
@open girder @rapid hornet Question: What makes the Joulescope so expensive? Could one build a cheaper DIY version?
@haughty quiver hi hi!
Push Notifications: such a surprisingly deep topic. some really interesting approaches too.
@slow spire The creator was on Amp Hour talking about it. I think the challenge is switching to different sense circuits based on the load.
We've had ANCS in Arduino (for Feather nRF52xxx) for a while. Nice to see it in CircuitPython.
very cool @slow spire I'd never used it this way before.
Welcome amy
π Amy!
π
@slow spire https://embedded.fm/episodes/278
@haughty quiver Examples are in the Arduino IDE under Adafruit nRF52β¦ Libraries > Peripheral > ancs
I played with it earlier this year, and may show a project based on it sometime.
At first I was poking around developer.apple.com, going, βWhere is the ANCS iOS sample code?β
And then it hit me that this is one of the few iOS things that doesn't need a custom app to connect to a microcontroller project.
π
Way to go Fighting Illini

Second what @clear matrix said, @frosty sigil
Full agreement -- thank you @frosty sigil and Amy
Another great group of makers!
@analog acorn A celestron HD14? You weren't standing in the ocean looking at the stars were you?
@waxen thistle Oh no no no. I was shooting a regatta when I killed the Manfroto. This is for astrophotography, though now that I moved to Seattle I have to drive about four hours to get anywhere dark enough.

Arduino needs to make a Feather-compatible board π
@tiny plank With as much as feather has taken off, I'm surprised that they haven't
In time hopefully!
@tiny plank PT talked about offering Arduino help with that in a previous episode. (cc: @open girder )
Yeah, I saw that!
I don't have any idea why they haven't jumped on the Feather bandwagon, and taken advantage of the ton of Feather breakouts and libraries.
It's a missed opportunity for sure.

Regardless if it's a physical version or done by Adafruit, libraries rock. π
Impressively small traces on the milling machine.
My problem is, I read every word of every article that I get from Adafruit. Sometimes, not such a good thing.

@slow spire It's replacing the 2 LiPo's in a Sphero 2.0 (a normally sealed robotic ball that I cut open) that the original batteries can't hold a charge anymore. I don't know if the batteries are in series or parallel but it's designed to have them in there. I just don't have a way to get 2 properly matching cells like what it came with.
@ivory kiln There's probably some discussion of this on the Sphero Forum:
https://community.sphero.com
I saw a Sphero at a hackathon a while back. Cool!
I found this discussion:
https://community.sphero.com/t/sphero-depleted-battery-life/968
They suggest emailing support@sphero.com, and have some questions for people to answer in order to resolve battery issues.
@slow spire Sadly no, I've checked. O ya most definitely! They are awesome & have gotten even better & more capable!! Including the various Sphero's communicating with each other & operating together.
I've already talked with Sphero as well, my 2.0 was actually a replacement device for the 1.0 that I had gotten years back that the batteries had died & they replaced for free.

ADABOX 014 UNBOXING LIVE 12/18/19 with @johnedgarpark @adafruit - Thank you! @digikey @NordicTweets #MAKEWITHDIGIKEY #ADABOX14 #ADABOX
Yay a charger!
I actually needed one of those
SO thankful for that charger. π
Note: You must take the CLEAR plastic covers off the holes to actually put the screws in
My gizmo standoffs are taller than the old ones
Yes, that was annoying until I noticed the Kapton tape.
I just downloaded the Bluefruit Playground app.
jp will be showing the "take the stickers" off part shortly
FYI, if you build your own CircuitPython firmware it will not work with the new app.
Q: Hope I'm not jumping the gun by asking but, the new app, is that going to be available for android devices?
@ivory kiln we have so far made android apps for many/most of our apps, so it's something we'll consider
Another note from experience. Making the ornament with your own picture will prompt wife (or significant other) to want to put on the tree
@analog acorn we could add support for the new app to circuitpython
Not a priority, @rapid hornet . We can put it in the backlog. π
Those cases are top notch -- easy access to so many of the board's components while being tough as nails. And the tripod mount is really nifty.
Mike Doel did such a great job on that CPX case.
always forgets the second l
@open girder I know android can be a pain, but it would be really appreciated. π
Don't look at the Sun with them.
LOL! these glasses are a trip!
Yup. That plastic popping tip was needed. LOL!
very relaxing
not gonna lie, there's a solid chance i would've missed the tape while assembling π
You can't put the screws in with the tape there
I'd be like "Huh. The screws aren't going in. What am I doing wrong? Did I suddenly forget how to use a screwdriver? Are they funky reverse threaded screws?"
Me, too, @waxen thistle
definitely same haha
I did at first
Then I'd be like..."Oh. Well hmm. I totally need another cup of β !"
I couldn't get the image transfer to work with android app, is that a known issue?
Yea well I cracked my speaker connector because I put the wrong side facing
Need less beer prior to assembly π¦
@normal plover post up in the forums with version, etc., etc and the team will check it out
The hackspace mag was very nice
might be permissions issue to access photos
Love the cuts JP is doing -- it's a small thing, but that takes time & effort with a bunch of planning.
I can't access my pictures. I can take new ones but not access my photos
I'm successfully using a sewing pin to get the plastic thingies off.
you can also use a finger nail
Murphy's Law -- I always trim my nails the day before I absolutely needed a longer nail.
Confirmed, fingernail is also working... also with less personal puncture threat.
Purple nail polish is optional
Is it though? Is it? π
shout out to that dreidel project- really cool execution
I'm building a small fire place for my Adabox 014 to illuminate π
That virtual snowglobe is well done
Eyeball is perfect for an ornament
@strange mantle rocked out both the Dreidle and the Virtual Snowglobe
Cyber Santa: Git to da sled. Git to da sled now!
How are the stand offs attached to the TFT Gizmo? Can't figure out how to remove them.
You can use the Feather nRF52840 with the hide and seek as well.
they're not meant to be removed, they are surface mounted @ivory kiln
yah they are soldered on
thats why they have the kapton dots
that way they are secure
Gotcha, I shall adapt my design. π
the deadly live demo with a phone, bluetooth, and more
@proper trench Ya he does make it look so great & easy!
Maker Magic
JP is just an nice in person too!
the layout of everything is really nicely framed too
For a live show, that was so many complex moving parts looking so slick!
so refreshing to hear folks notice that :)
I was just wondering -- how many Circuit Playground Bluefruits does he have? And I already know the answer -- never enough.
@haughty quiver You know L-Systems!?
I wonder if some petroleum jelly would make for a good temporary added seal for the snow globe?
Silicon grease shoudl work great.

Woot. Great Unbox JP
Good presentation @haughty quiver
Great job @haughty quiver
And now to look forward to adabox 0xF
These unboxing vids are always fun. Great job @haughty quiver
Oh here's where the chat was, oops.
So I figure, hang the ornament and when people are looking at the tree, take a picture of them looking bat the tree and transfer it to the ornament.
I remember when the first adabox was released -- and it's amazing how far it has progressed.
Good time to have signed up for AdaBox though if this was the largest, might have set expectations a bit high π
@waxen thistle , I know. My biggest mistake was not signing up then. I was too late for Adabox 002 but I've been in since 003.
Got some cool white pla loaded up in the 3d printer, which is a convenient coincidence. Will have to look and see if there's a snowflake case model
@drifting wyvern oh man, we will need to include a couch cushion in the next one then
The plushie is random but definitely fun! Nice padding too
Oh and count me as one vote for the blue fruit Playground Android version. I'm sure it's far from a trivial port, but I am jealous of those features, and there are no functional Apple devices here except for a dual processor power Mac g4 and a few of its ancestors π
Is there an AdaBox-specific channel on discord that I'm not seeing? Would be kind of neat
I know this might not solve the android problem, but here's an alternative.
Currently, BestBuy is having a special on an iPhone SE (mostly same specs as iPhone 6s in the iPhone 5 chassis), tied to SimpleMobile wireless carrier. Total price, $60.
But you have no obligation to activate the cellular aspect of the device -- giving you effectively an iPod Touch on the cheap. Relatively low cost entrance into the iOS ecosystem.
Well that didn't last long. My daughter walked by, saw the CPB and the app, and immediately had me install the app so she could steal the CPB. All gone now. I didn't tell her I have two other ones. π
@analog acorn what a lovely problem to have.
She seems unduly happy with it. I don't mind one bit.
Lol. I was just thinking, it's nice to have the cpb because I had gotten a cpx with the eventual goal of sharing with the kiddo. Well, long story short, make code happened and now it's definitely hers.
More than once I scoured my adafruit wishlist to bump me over the $300 "free CPX" threshold, just so I'd have one to give to friend's/coworker's kid.
The CPX makes it criminally easy to get started in electronics & coding.
And I shrug and think -- I was going to get that stuff anyways, so everyone wins.
Hmm. The (Android) app isn't working on my Galaxy s8 - can't connect. Wonder if it's a battery thing.
And the index in the bootloader points to product 4300, go figure
Oh, guess I can't use Bluetooth classic and le at the same time on my phone. Weird
Ok, that was reasonable successful: got circuit python and ble working with the neopixels, and the cyborg eye on the tft, but not tft and ble at the same time. Since this has to last 3 months, that works for me. Good night all!
@waxen thistle Re: Adafruit CPX. I have no less than five, in the original wrappers, that I carry around to "electronics/programming/STEM events" where there are likely to be kids who would love to get started. I just give them away like candy. @rapid hornet got me into the habit.
Itβs a great habit to get into β itβs a relatively low cost, low risk way to inspire.
@analog acorn Nice.

John's still in EST? That's amazing π
JP is on the west coast, but I imagine all the times are posted as Eastern for sake of consistency. I know when dealing with mixed timezones, I've glossed over details like that π
@heavy ginkgo We were able to fix the showtimes bot so now I'm no longer a time traveler.

Rezz-Inspired NeoPixel Glasses https://learn.adafruit.com/rezz-inspired-neopixel-glasses
Does it give you 20/20 vision?
The LG wasn't up last night. Guess it's time to look again.

OK thanks.
Need to improve multitasking feeding the baby, changing the diaper, and creating learning quides π
Lol.
Do you use a larger nozzle when printing filament with glitter in it?
I think it's awesome that you guys include the Fusion 360 files. It makes it very easy to remix like with the legs on the camera slider I made.
For some amusing hints on multitasking with feeding the baby and development/documentation, I recommend Jim Williams' Application Note 45: https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/application-notes/an45f.pdf

Amelia is an awesome person. I got to meet her at SuperCon
Point of thought for the Star Trek communicator. You could give it more capacities, by doing a list of preset numbers that could be selectable by turning the dials.
I made the soldering iron stand too. Guess I need to post about it.
@ivory kiln for a future remix, yes def will π
@upbeat coral, I made the soldering iron stand too. π
Morning gents!
Good to see you back!
Had a day-job meeting and missed until now π
@sage aspen I had to mod the iron holder. I had an OLD iron with a tapered handle that I used. It was my first experience with modifying one of the thingiverse jobs.
Make a shell for one of those "drive on the ceiling" cars
I now have a small army of Crikits in holders for various devices. π
When the Cybertruck comes out, I wonder how long it will be before someone releases transfers that you stick on the glass, and makes the windows look like they're broken...
do you remember where you saw the Tesla Cyber truck shell for an RC car?
I haven't seen it.
Awe, wow that did turn out really nice. π
Michaels carries Filament? Gotta go check my local srore afetr the show
Awe ya that would be the best!
Forgot to tag you guys in my tweet last night - cool case that bolts onto the back of an old AT device (IntelliKeys) that I'd like to share tonight https://twitter.com/at_makers/status/1214815156313698304?s=20
Finished the case for the #IntelliKeys dongle - can't wait to head to Gainesville Thursday to train @FRCRiptide4118 to assemble, program & test it! Come join us, @wernedat! https://t.co/wyXiHEu0ad
Lol, ya I bet, I know how fast the project idea list can grow!
Hold off on the blog until tomorrow - I'll have a real post on the IntelliKeys
YAY! Fantastic! That's my #1 request
Gotta pair/bond to iOS
Could you possibly email the STL Files for the RC cybertruck?
