@haughty quiver While I know doing it yourself is more fun, there are aviation adapters to standard headphone jack things.
note: JP-x is Jet Propulsion, which is the name for formulations for aircraft fuel
Are you writing a new book @spring heath ?
His lab would therefore be called JPL
ooo, nice @eager sapphire
I think that name's already taken. ๐
Just open-source the name, @lavish patrol
NASA might be in a good mood, and allow it? ๐
@eager sapphire Got it. Understood.
But.. but.. those deep down techie bits are the fun part ๐
glowy movey ๐
@odd stream True, but when a first time user gets so frustrated, they're taking a break to search for sledgehammers at homedepot's website..... ๐จ
Great stand, btw. I have my portal on one already.
Lol. Random reboot.
@waxen thistle Hah.. true. And if I ever need a sledgehammer, my SO works at homedepots so I can have her bring one home.
Thingiversii?
I like projects that have different modes
@steep pilot ๐
I WANT A LEGO LEAGUE
@odd stream That's awesome -- if I was in your shoes, I'd be making all sorts of requests.... "You want 12 feet of PVC pipe, a dozen connectors and bends, and two hammers? You're not building a Blue Man Group project, are you?" ....um, maybe.....no? yes?
A modern day canary.
Also great for detecting aliens that emit excessive amounts of carbon dioxide. ๐ฝ
@left fiber that is an awesome application!!! well done!
@left fiber Great idea!
Speaking of canary....
Lol.
This S&T is for the birds. ๐ฆ
is it flapping!!
@waxen thistle You should tweet about it.
hi
So many people coming on here....winging live demos!
Birds of s feather...
@pearl shoal hey bill, i really like your black backdrop. is it a painted wall or fabric?
@lethal lagoon You can flap if you want to, you can leave your friends behind...
Fabric (Amazon)
looks great
And in so doing, one is exercising...hmmm
@lethal lagoon ๐
that's awesome @pearl shoal !!
An elegant design @pearl shoal
I love how the case matches the USB cable
@pearl shoal This is a wonderful design, I love it.
Yet another one knocked out of the park, @pearl shoal , ๐
@pearl shoal great design!
Lol
Still beta
thanks @lavish patrol
EduardoPoint -- the maker powerpoint ๐
@lethal lagoon I see your cat's trying to get in on the action again. ๐
I have one of those - fantastic prototyping tool
yep she checked her kitty watch and realized it's dinner time
My cat has a watch just like that. Quite a loud alarm, really
๐ฑ Human! Feed me, I purr demand it! ๐ฑ
Must feed kitty... Must feed kitty...
what about the googly eye bagel?
Great projects everyone, keep up the good work.
thanks for sharing everyone!! amazing stuff tonight!
Great projects, everyone! Thank you!

Oh, good idea @waxen thistle
TinyGo is on my "to try" list.
rust
hehe. thanks for the quick-link @waxen thistle

When sparky became available a while ago, i nabbed a few of them. Because good ol' Sparks and I are buds.
@wanton dome I dunno... electronics and oxidization don't mix too well.
dunno, demolition engineers might disagree ๐
I disagree
I used to know all about oxidization, but I'm a but rusty on it now.
@open girder the XAC packaging is also off the hook
@wanton dome how so?
it's super accessible
you mean it's not inside a hard plastic blister pack, secured with industrial zip ties?
Good on them, proud of ya Microsoft.
I rememebr having fun with those X-in-1 Radio Shack kits.
Oh, we need an updated Adafruit 500 in 1 kit.
I mean theres the CPX, it's pretty close
I used to have one of those electronic kits years ago. Unfortunately, the cat peed on it.
@sage aspen That's already available, it's called the Adafruit store ๐ The 23x10^19 in 1 kit is Digikey ๐
Wedesndays are the best, always super inspiring to see what other folks are making
CPX is probably the closest thing, but I was thinking of something similar to the radioshack ones but with neopixels and barometers and such.
ahh so cute!
@sage aspen I think the thing I miss most about those X00-in-1 kits is the springy springs on the terminals!
The mosfet shirt is a very cool touch
Yeah, that was nice except when you went to take it apart.
True that.
But I swear DuPont connectors and headers/breadboards are so much more flaky.
I think if they had 2x2 breadboard blocks at each point, that would be nicer.
I have good luck with the dupont ones
At least the ones adafruit sells
When I went to summer camp they had a ham radio/electronics shack and a lot of the kids brought in kits with those spring connectors
โฑ : ๐ฎ @haughty quiver MakeCode Minute was 1min 46sec of getting lost because I forgot my Tile Map ๐ฎ โฑ
When I'm rich (ha) I'm going to make a better breadboard.
Lol.
When you make a better breadboard, you'll be rich
makecode arcade?! i didn't know about this amazingness
its a real good talk. among many at PyCascades.
You can even use an ItsyBitsy M4 now
Another random reboot. ๐
Mad I missed the initial run of PyPortal.
Lol.

Good one @lethal lagoon
Hello, I'm currently part of a team that's designing a pronged pressure sensor that measures nerve activity. We were going to use the raspberry pi zero as the master board that controls all the mobile components(servos, battery, strain gauges) but we wanted to also include a touchscreen. As of right now, the touchscreen is using up all of the pins on the board. Is there a way that we could access pins on the board after installation of a screen? Are there additions that we could purchase? Do you know of another board that would be better equip to handle our project? Thanks any help would be much appreciated
@blazing atlas CircuitPython Quarterly! Great work!
Maybe they can make that magazine come to ada-fruition
ok, that was some jammin' tunes
Is an engineer on this right now?
yes @tight sinew
@tight sinew questions will be answered towards the end of the show.
go go @caitlinsdad
ohh gotcha, where is the end of the show?
๐
when lol
Probably around 5:45, but I'd keep watching. It's all good stuff.

@tight sinew Welcome! Maybe a Pi Cobbler would help you: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2028 Also, you may want to repost your question in the help with raspberry pi channel, or help with projects channel ๐
Thanks @lethal lagoon I'll check it out
Every time i see these clips, I think of toaster ovens and Kapton tape.
@tight sinew which touchscreen are you using? is it one of the PiTFTs?
@tight sinew good luck with your projects! let us know your progress and how it turns out!
THere are few things in life you can't do with kapton, gaffers, or hockey stick tape.
Yah thats what were lookin at, 2.4 pitfts
I need a laser in my life
Yah will keep yall updated and probably will be back to bug you guys lol
@tight sinew I did a graphing calculator project using a pizero and pitft. I removed the connector from the pi TFT and manually soldered wires so I could use other pins. I had to reference the schematics though so I knew the minimum wires it needed.
@waxen thistle And WD40.
Ohhh true thats cool, and was it easy to connect the soldered wires to the screen?
I just soldered the wires between the pitft and pi zero
I mean, no harder than soldering any other wires
ok cool, yah we'll totally try that! thanks
To remove the pitft connector, I pried the plastic part off and desoldered the pins individually.
@sage aspen ๐
@tight sinew there's the 2.4" one, and some other sizes also, but in general, they each have a way to get access to the GPIO header, typically via a separate header
Ah gotcha, this is my first project like this ever, I'm still learning the basics, whats the GPIO header?
Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits : - Tools Gift Certificates Arduino Cables Sensors LEDs Books Breakout Boards Power EL Wire/Tape/Panel Components & Parts LCDs & Displays Wearables Prototyping Raspberry Pi Wireless Young Engineers 3D printing NeoPix...
is the 2.4 the smallest touchscreen to your knowledge?
The GPIO header is the 40 pin double row connector
the 2x20 row of pins - where you connect everything
Ohhh gotcha
GPIO = general purpose input output
Potentiometer with Built In Knob - 10K ohm https://www.adafruit.com/product/4133
Element14 Desktop Enclosure Kit for Raspberry Pi Computers https://www.adafruit.com/product/4131
Cool, ill check those out, are you guys only on here on wednesdays?
A bunch of us (including myself) are generally on here all week
@tight sinew in terms of the PiTFTs - yes, looks like 2.4" is the smallest one with touch, there are lots of sizes, hopefully i didn't miss one: 2.4", 2.8", 3.2", 3.5"
and there's a 2.2" without touch
Im upgrading a electric [12v or less DC] fake arm for a shoulder amputee.. I am new to adafruit. My question what board would be recommended to control forward and side movement, may use 2 servos [pan and tilt style?] but, which library is recommended? Please help if you can and I have 3 weeks left to complete..thanks
ADXL343 - Triple-Axis Accelerometer (+-2g/4g/8g/16g) w/ I2C/SPI https://www.adafruit.com/product/4097
that's a great accelerometer!
I hear the guy who wrote the CP driver is a handsome devil
Adafruit USB C Breakout Board - Downstream Connection https://www.adafruit.com/product/4090
I so shoulda bought one of those when I got my PyPortal.
Adafruit 2.13" Tri-Color eInk / ePaper Display FeatherWing - Red Black White https://www.adafruit.com/product/4128
Hey, @bright epoch ! Such a cool project. Can you post that question on http://forums.adafruit.com as well? I'd suggest the General Project Help category.
whaaat that is so cool
Ooo, I like
thanks Oesterle
Also, I'm thinking a geared motor with a lot of torque will have much more lifting capability than a servo.
@slow spire there are servos with tons of torque but of course they're $$$
super interested in e-ink but haven't played with it yet
Adafruit PyPortal - CircuitPython Powered Internet Display https://www.adafruit.com/product/4116
How functional does it have to be? Is it a prototype?
Look into Metal Gear servos. Much less likely to strip.
shoulder movement needed to lift forearm to position..3lbs
Like @slow spire said, Servos may note be able to lift 3 pounds with just direct drive.
Do you just need to demo it in 3 weeks? Can you iterate on that build afterwards?
At least not anything affordable
Might look at something like spooling/unspooling a cable to do the lifting.
@bright epoch what range of motion (in degrees) do you need, and how fast does is have to move? I'm thinking about those door lock motors in the store (90 degree movement and fairly slow... but strong)
I can build this kit that can be connected to chest harnest that can be used for other amputees
i thought a a wire wrap servo that works with pully
dastels 180 degrees forward and just 30 the right like lifting arm to put on deodorant
Now I'm thinking of Simone Gertz's hilarious lipstick robot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcW70-6eQcY
I programmed a uArm robot arm to help me put on lipstick. I'm not sure how well this color goes with my skin tone. TWITTER: http://twitter.com/simonegiertz F...

thanks oesterle
talked to a company that said if this can be put together they will market world wide ..
I will assimilate that alarm clock, resistance is futile. Unless you're Mho, then you're cool bud.
How do you get the red and blue printed on Perma-Proto PCBs?
@open girder Is the Amiga Demo available for the PyPortal?
@open girder As a self taught electronics enthusiast what important topics might I be missing due to not having an EE degree? What might be easier to learn in an EE program than teaching myself?
Q: a loud loud speaker you have / recommend for CPX?
Thanks
Hi, do I need to include name, date, major, anything else in the header of a personal statement of Computer Science? can you describe a little of the layout of personal statements? please!
I enjoy it

Hi @turbid sparrow
@turbid sparrow !
dog is kicking over everything in the room in search for food. bye! ๐
Hello!
A flying penguin!?
@wanton dome Lol.
?? What tools, scopes, protocol analyzers would be needed to support USB HW development?
So so very cool.
@wanton dome I would suggest "Art of Electronics" and "Practical Electronics for Inventors" to have on hand as references. I'm largely self-taught... no EE degree, but a 2 year technician diploma (i.e. more practical and pragmatic, thus missing a lot of the theory)
Thanks for the shoutout!
Great project!!
@turbid sparrow thanks for the Linux Feather!

@inner spade grats!!!! (i knew it was you as soon as you spoke)
@wanton dome I'm in the same boat as you -- trained in IT, doing electronics/DIY/Maker stuff -- those two books that @odd stream are VERY solid, but they can easily be intimidating as they do a deep dive very quickly. Brush up on your math :)
Also, I recommend https://www.edx.org/course/circuits-electronics-1-basic-circuit-mitx-6-002-1x-0 from EDX as a good starter course.
Congrats @inner spade

@waxen thistle Yeah, they're deep books.. especially "Art". I tend to use them mainly as a reference, but taking them a tpic at a time is VERY instructive.
It take soooo many hours to make good hardware/software, thanks for all the work

@odd stream I'll be getting my pyportal on Friday. Once i get that up and running, I might grab another in a second batch to do some PyP to PyP communications projects
I get my PyPortal on Saturday (just saw an update).
ADABOX subscription ordered.
Hi, all! Great show again! Thanks.
Question, if it's not too late. Does the PyPortal use a self-signed TLS cert, and can you update it yourself?
And can it do TLS 1.3? Can you force it to use no less than 1.2?
I'm not sure about a certificate, but you should be able to update it yourself.
It uses ESP32 over SPI to connect to the internet.
I did some work on the CP driver.
For the firmware that runs on the ESP32, check out https://github.com/adafruit/nina-fw
oooh, I shall. ๐ Thank.s
YW
Thanks everyone. I'm good to go now.
(I just hope we're not putting a bunch of unsecurable IoT devices by playing with these.)
Looking at the comments on that Repo, I do see some stuff about TLS @noble prairie
Thanks for the tip @waxen thistle
Ja. I'm digging in there.
(Thinking more about this, the PyPortal is a client only, and isn't running a server (I hope), so as long as the root certs can be updated in the firmware (via the roots.pem, if I'm reading it right), no worries.)

@inner spade I haven't tried, but good question. We've got 8MB to work with and the JSON files are generally pretty small, so could probably cycle through a number of sites, and even change out the .bmp
Sounds feasible. Although it might be nice to have a wall of PyPortals.
I'm thinking animated GIFs
@haughty quiver @inner spade Yeah, json files are just text so will be relatively tiny.

Lots of snap cases. ๐
That angle is parametric
Sorry, just painted my entire room a matte black. Too late.
Is the viewmaster steroscopic with lenses etc, or just 2 holes for your eyes?
Hi
Twice the fun.
@halcyon zenith Sorry, I looked at some images but I couldn't find anything.
Where's the cupholder?
I love the model of the PyPortal - but it's a "distributed design" so you can't export anything that includes it as .f3d without using the Web. If you know of a way to fix that, it would be helpful ๐
@grizzled brook - I was just trying to not take credit for your part
Won't that melt in the heat?
Maybe you can implement a wireless charger to it just like the Tesla wireless charger project that you've made before.
@pearl shoal No problems!
Dinky little computer. ๐
@calm nebula 2 images, one per side/eye, each shot of the same thing, but from a slightlly diffferent point of view. One for each eye, your brain re-combines them into a 3d scene.
@calm nebula - I exported them using the Web interface
It must do that breaking for you
Smallest thin-client I've seen yet.
No No - the lenses in the original will not be right for stereoscopic - they are for magnifying a tiny photo

Nice @clear matrix! I wanted to make something like that, but hadn't had time.
Thanks @gaunt plume

@waxen thistle yeah, for sure! JP is planning on something with magnets ๐
๐
Sorry JP, didn't mean to steal your thunder ๐
@clear matrix ๐ for the colors.
I made a grid cover for the wedge board - I'll add it tonight (don't burn cycles on it ๐ )
neat mold idea!
@pearl shoal looks great!
Printing the new PyPortal stand now
Neat.
Thingiverse is unhappy - will get it up later
I think thingiverse has been unwell all day.
no worries @waxen thistle -- I love the magnet lid idea. Mine is not as snazzy as that, just using to mount the whole case for next week project.
@steep pilot you'll need to come show them how it's done at Weekee Watchee
some folks have had luck blocking newrelic scripts on Thingiverse. they sometimes seem to block the page from loading.
I don't think magnets will mess w the PyPortal @waxen thistle but we'll find out!
@lavish patrol Weird.. I just popped in and grabbed the new STL
Working on Edge - not on Chrome - go figure
That's a bummer
Elizabeth, you rock when the net cooperates
awesomeness!

This is a Wedge Box for the Adafruit PyPortal. It is set at a 15deg angle which works well. There is a parameter in the Fusion 360 archive (attached) that can adjust the angle. Values from 5-20 work well... smaller and you might have to adjust the ATMakers.org text and lar...
Thanks, @open girder . See you again in nine minutes. ๐
Very awesome projects everyone!
I'm dissappointed the gremins kept me at bay. But there'll be a guide out on it soon.
Gremlin guide.
@clear matrix, are you making a guide for the buttons?
To ensure optimum Gremlin efficiency, remember to feed your Gremlin after midnight.
Gremlins for Dummies? ๐
@sage aspen As soon as we get the button library finished up, yep!
Sweet
@clear matrix Haha .. PyPortal alarm clock guide, actually. It's all up and running in a prototype cardboard case.
Nice!
Speaking of cardboard -- I just picked up some eyelet screws designed for foam projects. No reason they won't work for cardboard.

They were like a buck fifty for a dozen, pretty cheap at Walmart.
As long as the thread is coarse enough.
About as coarse as the Beverly Hillbillies visiting Buckingham Palace.
Lol.
I'm looking forward to getting a pyportal so I can try to turn it into a control panel to use on my train layout to control the turnouts.
It's Ada'clock, time for Ask an Engineer.

@waxen thistle if Adabot gives Minerva some, they'll be Minerva's Minerals. ๐
And what happens when you apply the energy from Naquadah to a crystal?
Just wait until Adabot discovers dilithium crystals.

Any thoughts on Open source trolls patenting others work? Refer to Bunnie Huang article in Hack Space Mag 15
@next compass we had a couple patent trolls mess with us, we "won" - will be able to talk about it eventually
we also refused to hand over some customer data to a gov request, we will talk about that one day too...
wow
We have several patents in AT that we're counting down on. One of them just "expired" due to them not paying the maintenance fee.... SOOO frustrating (they can renew it)
My question. Will Adafruit be adding Load Cells to their product line any time soon. They make a great sensor for all sorts of applications. I have a need coming soon.
I'm working on a Neopixel project that currently has 2 neopixel strips each running on individual boards. What I would like to do is sinc both strips so that the light show begins at the same time. I was thinking I could use RF but I've never worked with it and I have not been able to find an example. Any suggestions on hardware or coding?
if there are good load cells let us know (support@adafruit.com)

About 3 feet.
@zealous python Neat.

3 feet between boards, you could simply wire the two boards together using I2C:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/MasterWriter
I can run a control wire from one to the other if I absolutely have to but I'm trying to avoid it if I can.

@fallow fractal @lavish patrol @waxen thistle thanks
That flexible eink doesn't get bent out of shape!

Do you just do one pin and make sure the header is straight?
Neat displays.
BTW, this speaker from the Hallowing AdaBox is amazing with the PyPoral (and fits in my case!) ๐ https://www.adafruit.com/product/3923
@topaz musk When I'm soldering on header, I use whatever I can to clamp the header level with the board. Then, I solder one pin on each end. Then the whole thing is stable enough to solder the rest.
I like that Mona holder
it's adorable!

100% agreement that soft skills are just as important even more important than the technical skills @open girder
This is important - thank you for doing it. The social skills classes we run at our therapy center do SO much good - many kids haven't learned these lessons on the schoolyard. Let me know if we can help.
@pearl shoal Yes, I've used it a few times. I wanted something louder for the alarm clock and went with a bigger one: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3968
Hear the good news! This speakerย is a great addition to any audio project where you need aย 4 Ohm impedance and 3W or less of power. At 40mm diameter it has a more square-ish shape, ...
I'm making a tiny felt puppet for funzies today! LOL
@slow spire okay sounds good. I'll try to rig something to make them straight.
Where did the Adafruit logo come from? Is it suppose to represent something?
@sage aspen It's not out yet, don't ask ๐
@topaz musk I only need them to stay straight as long as it takes to solder two pins.
Oh, ok. Question redacted.
Shhhh ๐
a seesaw HAT would be cool!
@waxen thistle I'm going to go with "it depends" on this one.. but with some minimum acceptable level of social skills.
Lol.
Blue-tac is the best thing that has ever happened to soldering since flux
I do agree that more attention should be given to teaching social skills from the start.
Q: how large a json file can the PyPortal handle? I process astronomical catalogs which can get fairly large.
Any plans to work on guide for using REST API with PyPortal to pull more advanced feeds like twitter feed that needs header data for credentials. Also will a microphone breakout work with PyPortal to create a voip circuitpython phone.
lol
@slow spire right. that seems to be the key. I bet that Silly Putty would hold the ends on and I could get 2 pins straight, then lose the putty and finish up. or maybe some of that tape that @waxen thistle recommended
I bend extra long header pins to mechanically hold down perfboard to solderless breadboard.
Adafruit PyPortal - CircuitPython Powered Internet Display https://www.adafruit.com/product/4116
@topaz musk Masking tape or painter's tape would work very well and leave less residue.
Q: How do you get data to/from the SD card on the PyPortal?
Is there a lib for that?
@slow spire well i have a boatload of both painter's tape and masking tape. that works just fine.
I want to use the Sound FX board to play sounds through an xbox one headset while playing a game. I will have a TRRS cable coming out of the xbox controller and going into my project box where I will merge the audio from the controller with the Sound FX board and back out to a TRRS jack where I will plug in the headphones. I found this circuit: https://www.rane.com/n109fig1.gif - will this work? I shouldn't need an amp on the Sound FX board since I am using headphones, correct?
