@velvet beacon u have a shack sign?
@river peak Was there any doubt? You're here among friends and fellow nerds ๐
@waxen thistle Fair point, but I'm a multi-purpose nerd!
Just remember, @river peak, youโre unique, just like everybody else
The best kind, a swiss army knife of geekery -- and with your puns and wit, a sharp one at that!

Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
Hello!
How ya doin' @inner spade ?
Pretty darn good, @waxen thistle . How about you? Any exciting projects on your bench today?
I've been working, but a good day -- took care of a couple of very urgent, high visibility issues which made a legit difference.
Wow, relevance! It's nice when that happens.
Indeed -- not moving marbles from one jar to another.
Greetings friendly people of Adafruit Discord!
... or just responding to random interruptions. That was my work life the 4 years prior to retirement. Don't miss it. At. All.
I can't tell you how many times I've sat down, calculated out how much I need to earn just to make ends meet....so I could do my neglected hobbies as source of income.
I had a spreadsheet for that at one point.
Hello all.
Hi!
How's everyone doing on this fine day?
Hey!
Well, it's pretty cold right now in Michigan, so I guess it's not fine weather for me today.
It's a wonderful day. A little chilly here. Some frost on the pumpkins this morning.
Any snow yet?
I've done the math, crunched the numbers -- and determined that it would probably be an unambiguous failure for the first 12-18 months. If I could 'write that off' as a learning experience....then there's a snowball's chance in the Sahara.
all great workshops end to @haughty quiver workshop
No snow here (Eastern WA state), but some falling about 2 hrs away.
@waxen thistle At some point, for me anyway, it wasn't about the numbers -- it was about reduced stress and happiness.
๐ฏ Amen to that. That's what I'm thinking myself. That's the whole reason behind this.
Perhaps there's a health care cost savings from reduced stress.
My industry is very...hmm. How do I put it? Only gets worse as you move up, and right now I think the time demands outside of normal business hours is obnoxious.
That's what I recall, too. 60 hr weeks.
Hi, all.
And if figure, if I'm going to be burning the candle at both ends -- might as well be for myself? Doing the things I choose to do, instead of being ordered to do. Been ordered around for long enough.
It's tough to find that balance. I wish you the best, @waxen thistle
@haughty quiver Do you know what would be a interesting project?

@haughty quiver Why is the range of 128 versus 256?
maybe it goes from -128 to 127 ?
-128 command/channel
"640k should be enough memory for everybody."
ah, there you go ๐

128 was enough for # of notes and for duration values. Some controllers have multi-byte packets.

@haughty quiver I love the synth projects. I was really into it in my late teens.
That was cool, @haughty quiver thank you
Those synth sounds make me think of the opening sequence of "Logan's Run"

๐ฝ
thanks @waxen thistle !
Just had an image of Jane Badger
๐ค
Thanks for that
Not Badger, Badler.
Autocorrect is ruining my life. I exaggerate.
Is that animation inspired from somewhere, or is that an original creation?
original creation, but it's only a tree and some snowflakes ๐ so I bet somewhere, someone has already make something like that
Just FYI, Jane Badler
The snowflakes look a bit like laser pew pew....i half wished the tree was miniature and could fire back
I can add little cannons sticking out of the tree but that wouldn't bee too christmassy, would it ? ๐
๐
not exactly unprecedented:
George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, which occurred on the night of December 25โ26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a surprise attack organized by George Washington against the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey, on the morning of December 26.
Thanks @haughty quiver for pointing out the Helm synth (https://tytel.org/helm/ ) I used it a bunch a few months ago but totally forgot about it. It's really good, and open source!
@waxen thistle that tree actually looks nice on the matrix ๐
@cinder wind right on, it's really impressive and clear/fundamental!
@young adder wow!
the tree looks so great!
thanks @haughty quiver !
@river peak I can now type on the keyboard and print the appropriate characters (taking into account shifting and such) on the TFT featherwing. Now to design a case, then turn my attention to integrating with the a2z_machine codebase. I'm thinking of adding support for the SD card so you don't have to switch back to CircuitPython to load more games.
Hay @haughty quiver . Have you considered make a lightbar scale that shows the level of the incoming audio of the stream that your doing? That way, say if you mount it next your various camera lens (sense you use and look at different cameras) you're looking & talking at, you'll be able to see strait away that you've gone silent.
....but that'd mean no more unknowing Maker Charades! That was one of my favorite episodes (content wise and presentation). You know JP is a stellar presenter when you can interpret what he's doing without a lick of audio.
Although things get more interesting with a lick of battery. Donโt try this unless you are a professional.
Hmm. 9v goodness. -zap-
Nothing under 24 volts is worth warning about, other than current (sparks, fire) and side-effects (hydrogen explosion near some types of cell chemistries).
The reason why we have dozens of wall wart transformers is that they can be UL listed, and the appliance that uses them does not need this same listing, as it's deemed electrically safe (not a hazard).
This blog (below) says the same thing - lab (bench) power supplies
"..are regarded as stand-alone products and therefore are classified as "UL Listed".
and goes on to say
"..when the application's power architecture is being considered, the ease of use that the "UL Listed" mark provides can often tip the scale in favor of the external power adapter over the on-board power supply."
@ivory kiln I like this idea a lot. I think I'll try out some version of this soon. Thank you!
one small strip of neopixel and an trinket should do it ๐

Good show!
Fitting in a headset jack that takes over for the speaker would be a good addition to the tour guide.
Clicking the button to stop playing might be nice as well. That's take a non-trivial change to the code, though. I'll have a look when my schedule lightens up some.

Adafruit Circuit Playground Express Enclosure https://www.adafruit.com/product/3915
We've got nice cases for many of our beloved boards, but the Circuit Playground Express has been left out of couture enclosure game.Enter Ada-friend Mike Doell to the rescue! This ...
Would like to get one for my Christmas tree idea.
1/4x20.....nice.
I was just gonna ask if that were a standard tripod fitting
is the nut pressure-fitted in or is the plastic overmolded over it? (just wondering)
1/4" Whitworth.
Good!
i approve wholeheartedly
He really did try to destroy it.
video or it didn't happen
I have a pile of 20-1/4 nuts just for mounting various camera gear. This will make mounting a CP easy.
Crystal Skull
flat metro!
does it definitely not fit on a crickit? seems like it might, just barely, since there are cutouts for the pads
not that there would be any point in it
Excellent - the midi wing
hm, need a way to get 24ppqn into a trellis
Nrf Midi trellis next cool thing in the block
you gotta record ladyada saying "NEW", pitch shift it to a couple different offsets, and stick them on a neotrellis sampler
Does the APDS9960 Proximity, Light, RGB, and Gesture Sensor work well with the Crickit to detect walls and people for a moving robot friend? If not, what would?
for next week's show
I have been trying to use rechargable NIMH batteries to power the Circuit Playground/Crickit. All the brands that I have tried so far output more than 1.3V, so 4 batteries tends to be about 5.5V, which is too much for the Crickit. What do you suggest other than just use 3 batteries?
@open girder with midi featherwing, now you have to do a 4-channel CV/gate featherwing ๐
i didn't see a chip on the midi wing, is it for use with bitbanged midi only? or do the pins line up with USARTs on the m0/m4?
Gotta comment on Lady Ada's shirt. YES !! CS for All
it was pinned to the usart
I love your CPE case, I will worry less with my students ๐
congrats, jona!

Thanks for another great show.
Is there a guild on editing the synchronized eyes, but that is done just using CP?
thanks @muted mesa gotta love a m4 in a tiny board๐ ๐
indeed! can't wait to see the next thing you make! unless its for the Tricorder?
everything is for it until the corder is done๐ full steam ahead. but it should let me get an m4 inside of the chassis before designing a mother board pcb
any projects of your own ? beside cp?
i've got a couple "on the docket", but yeah, most of my time is spent on the under-the-hood stuff.

Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
Hello!
hey there!
Whassssssuuup John
I've had so much espresso I can now see forward and backwards through time by five minutes.
Watch out for that falling piano in two minutes, by the way @eager sapphire
....why'd ya warn him? Now I have to make a whole new plan.
Thanks JP I just did a rig adjustment on the synth
I know, but your new plan turns out to be better. You'll see @waxen thistle
Those peavey 88-key weighted โportableโ keyboards? Theyโre not portable
Anything is portable if you try hard enough.
They weigh about 1/2 of an acoustic piano, i swear
// points Kattni at the keyboard...
haha, true that
Great keyboard but settle on a spot for it right away
Espresso + live stream = MakeCode sub-minute today
Probably < 10 sec this time lol
Makecode Seconds?
"And this is how you connect a CPX to monitor your heartbeat..."
strobe light neopixel
We can watch @haughty quiver show live, but will have to go back and watch it at half speed
Honestly, if it werenโt for caffeine, Iโd never reach consciousnesses
lol, good call
Not going near the piano for the next 4 minutes
Excellent. The piano will be coming to you
Last week, Iโd have believed that. This week considerably better
Had to replace a power supply in the PC. KAPOW! Luckily, it only took itself out
Better it than you. Glad to hear that's the worst that happened.
It scared the * out of me. Thought sure it had damaged two apple cinema (irreplaceable) monitors
BRIGHT flash from the fuse. The MOV in the supply triggered
I've had a power supply start smoking. Not the good kind of smoking either (yes, bbq smoking meats is about the ONLY good kind)....let's just say if I wasn't there, I'd be short a house.
Woah
Thatโs the positive I take from this experience: it didnโt catch fire, and it didnโt damage any of the other equipment
And the failure was sudden -- generally, that's good
When it "kinda works for a bit then catches fire".....
LOL yes, but hey, at least it...works for a bit
like when a coworker plugged in a consumer linksys router (110v only) into a 220v outlet.
It moved bits until it couldnโt?
audio is live
It booted, they established a wifi connection. then it went down. they investigated, and blew out a small fire inside the plastic chassis.
....worst part, I WARNED them about it. They said they did it before. Obvious lies.
Wow
How long before someone creates a 'new new new' synth
Those people need supervision, Bruce
Drum beats audio level: -9db peak, -11 db ave
@eager sapphire They were my "seniors" too. Both in position and age. Just goes to show -- those qualifications sometimes mean nothing.
Drum beats audio level: -2db peak, -6 db ave
Sometimes such people are promoted out of the lab, for everyoneโs safety
But I know exactly what you mean. Iโve had project managers who....well, zombies wouldnโt touch them.
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
DJ JP, droppin' the maker tunes beats!
voice audio level: -1db peak, -6 db ave
....did I just hear a cat?
Make the TrellisM4 8x4 NPX array into a graphic EQ display. ;)
I sure hope I'm not losing it.
It's a haunted drum player
...more than usual.
Did you see the new Pi they just announced?
Adabox 0xA

I hear this thumping sound coming through your mic, sounds like a hummingbird's heartbeat ๐ โ
Thatโs the espresso in his bloodstream
wait, who put blood in his espresso stream?
munny in the microwave (it's the equivalent of a pay phone for his species, it's all good)
@haughty quiver For those not familiar with audio, what is "ground hum"?
".. plugged into a battery pack, so that we're not sharing a ground with AC.."
contrast, john
it's because it has to go up hill now and gravity slows it down
You could fill in half-beats when the accelerometer tells it to go 'too' slow.
sound was good john
Good mix with the voice, @haughty quiver
You get hum when you touch the input with your finger.
Ground noise usually happens when a ground is open. The 60Hz noise is all around us...
That just means JP is well grounded. ๐
Hi, what did I miss?
MakeCode minute regarding loops, new RPI 3 A+ product, job board update, and we're doing a beat sequencer
[did I miss anything?]
@haughty quiver What IDE is that and how did you set it up for Circuitpython.
espresso machine refit
@quick veldt That looks like Atom
@waxen thistle thanks
Atom and Mu are two very effective editors
Iโm here for the sequencer
Atom is very similar to Sublime -- both are highly configurable and extensible (plugins)
@haughty quiver What's your editor colour theme?
How difficult is it to convert the sequencer playing samples to send midi?
sequencer is a bit loud for me
bruce: me too -- I just shift the headphones forward, past the center of the ears, to reduce it that way. ;)
Can I have two sounds at the same time?
Sequencer level is peaking at 0db and above.
Okay, yes I can
For each column, more than one row of voices. They wil finish playing asynchronously (The gong sound is much longer than others are) in one of the example programs for Arduino IDE).
see: trellis_flash_sampler
How many voices can the M4 handle simultaneously?
When will there be USB MIDI in CIrcuitPython? ๐ค ๐น
oh yeah I think I found the work being done, thanks! https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/1321
Thanks again @haughty quiver for another fun show!
Another great show, indeed - thanks @haughty quiver !
Excellent projects today, @haughty quiver. I'll need a couple more Trellis M4s... Have a great Thanksgiving!
I look forward to the guides
Yes thanks for the show
Good show, @haughty quiver !
thanks so much all! I CANT STOP PLAYING THE DRUM MACHINE
SO MANY BEATS TO BE MADE!
Itโs fine

that sort of color scheme is used alot in CG software and compositing software we used at Disney, so I got very used to it.
This one indicates six voices:

if you ever have questions, these Discord channels are filled with helpful, knowledgable people.
there was that DJ @haughty quiver
Yes I found this a very helpful form. Only sometimes hard to find something again โฆ
sounds like the scheme is resource-based:
https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/td_libs_AudioConnection.html
yes, very true
quote
AudioMemoryUsageMax();
Return the maximum number of blocks that have ever been used. This is by far the most useful function for monitoring memory usage.
But the learning system is a great source as well
Off topic: is there a translation for the Adafruit learning pages? Sometimes I wish there was a german translation to show my college or students.
@dense marlin That question was asked yesterday during the Ask An Engineer show or in Discord -- forgot which. Mr. Ladyada said multiple language support for the learning guides was important and on their radar, but no timeline yet.
@inner spade okay, thanks. Then this is maybe happening in the future.
Perhaps you could write a guide for your project -- in German?
Get the ball rolling, as they say...
Very possible
Iโm working on a guide with college on mbots, There is not much on this in german.
But in Europe it is already late, so thanks everyone and @haughty quiver for the exchange of knowledge. Really appreciate this. But now I have to go to bed.
Good night, @dense marlin . Glad you could join us today.
@inner spade yes, it was very nice to see that there a other people who are into this as well and from whom I can learn a lot. I come back again.
@normal plover I haven't pushed the number of voices yet so I'm not sure.
@cinder wind I started work on it today and hope to have something working tomorrow. It'll just be sending and receiving bytes. We'll need a shared library on top to make it more friendly. (That library will work with midi over uart too.)
https://youtu.be/PQQhQ54_cW0 We've got classic MIDI happening now! Thanks to Ladyada @open girder for this! Borrowed a sweet analog synth from @cinder wind to show it off here, it's the perfect, keyboard-less synth to improve with Trellis M4.
Trellis M4 keypad and accelerometer as classic MIDI controller for analog synthesizer! UART MIDI is now available right alongside USB MIDI. Learn guide comin...
Sorry i can't make it to show and tell tomarrow!
No 3D Hangout today?
for thanksgiving i guess they dont do the show
I forget... are this evening's shows cancelled as well?
ruiz brothers said they take off but didnt heard other shows are off this week
AAE and S&T were a go as of last week's broadcast - unless I am really mistaken, I believe I heard them say it was happening.
JP's show on the other hand, it taking a break for gobble-gobble day.
Also known as Beef Reprieve day. ๐ฎ
yah we have our shows tonight (show and tell and ask an engineer)
@open girder sweet! I'm excited, I have a couple quick things to share
Hey! My timing finally worked out - I can show my adapted Zoom Tubes & 3D printed light touch switches!
Hope everyone's having a great Thanksgiving so far
Yep, same to you Bill! We are in between dishes that we cook the day/night before here.
It's a bit of an obsession here, we started brining on Monday, the bird is now "bagged up" and ready to go in the sous vide water bath tonight!
Yikes - nope, I'm a spatchcock turkey fan - just 2 hrs for the whole bird
I know a spatchcock turkey fan who was trying to convert me a couple weeks ago. Our approaches are cousins I think ๐
