waxen thistle
#

@quick veldt (mostly) unbiased third party here -- I agree with that answer. I think CP is way outpacing Arduino. It's quick to deploy, easy to learn, and very flexible & powerful.

fickle umbra
#

Arduino and C are going to get you more raw speed, I don't see that going away any time soon.

velvet beacon
#

congrats jeff from florida!

muted mesa
#

Congrats Jeff from FL!! (today was muggy..)

lavish patrol
#

I wonder of Jeff's met Dexter...

quick veldt
#

Well C always gets you more speed?

fallen rivet
#

C vs Python -- like underwear, it Depends.

waxen thistle
#

@quick veldt That's a "maybe". You can do a lot of things to optimize code -- it's like having a slow Ferrari or a very fast Ford.

muted mesa
#

@quick veldt yeah. there are times where C is better, like time-critical or interrupt support.

spring heath
#

Usually C will compile to machine code and will be faster. CircuitPython is interpreted so code is slower but dev time is super fast esp. with iterating designs

fallen rivet
#

You can make C slower than Python if you're determined.

fickle umbra
#

@quick veldt a compiled language is generally going to out-perform an interpreted language

waxen thistle
#

It all depends on your goal -- use the right tool for the job.

spring heath
#

Design time with CircuitPython is a fraction of a medium to large Arduino / C project

spring heath
#

Yes, Arduino Zero

odd stream
#

@quick veldt Not completely, IMO, but yes in many cases.

fickle umbra
#

if you don't need that raw processing power, you're going to go compiled. if you don't need that much raw power, then *py is a great choice.

fallen rivet
#

Theoretically you could native-code-ify your time-critical "Python" code and call it.

quick veldt
#

Wow this question has really taken off

Thanks DynoBot

odd stream

spring heath
#

Could NOT do that in Arduino

#

Are you guys saying C in place of cpp?

waxen thistle
#

CircuitPython reduces the barriers to entry.

Arduino is a subset of C, the compiler does fill C and CPP

Arduino doesn't really advertise that they're C++ although they certainly are.

@quick veldt Yeah.. with the SAMD51 boards I look at my SAMD21 boards and think "why?"

ivory kiln
#

Sooooooo wish cld attend makerfair

lament sluice
#

i like SAMD boards because i can use the String class without being paranoid about stack use

spring heath
#

Yes, Arduino is not really innovating for the vast majority of their customer base so those folks look and find Adafruit is building things that fit their projects, are programmable in multiple languages, and can cost less

wanton dome

@odd stream because sometimes you don't want to spend $5 on a chip to have most of it sit idle ๐Ÿ˜›

quick veldt

Goals:

muted mesa
#

yeah it may not be out yet. and, i imagine it wont be nearly as easy as standard Arduino. but...i would consider that a movement in the "new innovation" direction.

wanton dome
#

I'm sure they're going to sell like hot cakes

quick veldt

shell mason

waxen thistle
#

@ivory kiln I don't work for them, but the best thing they have said in the past is to contribute. Go onto show & tell, publish guides on your site of choice (ie Instructables), help with CircuitPython, be a stand up fella in discord ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

spring heath
#

Yes, many many Adafruit hired folks have come from people in the community who demonstrate an aptitude for their work and helping people.

#

No guarantees, but like any company, a way to get noticed and help the community too

quick veldt
#

Maybe the Pi Crickit will result in more of those live stream bots where random folks on the internet interact with robotics

ivory kiln
#

Great thanks @waxen thistle ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

spring heath
#

Ok, signing off, see you possibly at Maker Faire!

waxen thistle
#

And to build onto what @spring heath said....nothing is ever guaranteed in life. But when you work on transparent, community-driven team projects with an open source focus --- you can easily point at your contributions and say "See? Look here! I have done awesome things!" when interviewing at other places.

quick veldt
#

My favorite way to end a Wednesday is by looking at the stars while talking on discord.

#

On adafruit specifically

ivory kiln
#

Hmm, On instructables huh? Hmm, well, learning how to do an instructibles post is on tomorrows lesson plan.

quick veldt
#

Good for you

#

I like learning things on instructables

#

I would make guides if I were good enough at anything to teach people ๐Ÿ˜…

wanton dome
#

@quick veldt Learn some stuff, then teach it! Unless you were literally born yesterday (in which case, great computer skills), you've learned something that someone else has not. Find someone to teach it to

ivory kiln
#

Very true @waxen thistle . nothing is guaranteed, however patients and persistence are great & positive qualities to have, and life has taught me the lessons for those well. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ And for me, it's not just getting a job, it's getting around & working with folks of good character and passions for what they do. And Adafruit has that. Goodness just for the sake of just doing good. To me, that is the kind of thinking and acting that is going to change the world for the better. And goodness knows this world desperately needs it. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

quick veldt
#

Good to have ambition

ivory kiln
#

Never doubt what your good at @quick veldt . You never know what your good at till you learn and try. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

odd stream
#

@quick veldt What @wanton dome said!

quick veldt
#

No itโ€™s fine. Sounds like Iโ€™m insulting myself but really I havenโ€™t had much time to learn things.

#

Some people here have probably had longer electronics careers than Iโ€™ve been alive

#

Eventually the students become the teachers right?

wanton dome
#

@quick veldt It's pretty common to compare yourself to people who are "better" at stuff than you while ignoring the things where you're the "better" person. I do it pretty much by default, but you (I'm talking to myself here) should always take the time to pat yourself on the back for the things you do know.

If you've not had much time to learn stuff yet, take it as a blessing! The world is your oyster; if you stick with it you can learn ANYTHING

inner spade
#

@quick veldt There are always folks who would love to learn what you have already learned. Help them get going and don't worry about covering the subject cradle to grave.

quick veldt
#

Usually I just think big. Not sure if itโ€™s a good mindset to consider my life just a glimpse of the universe, but I find it quite inspiring. If people can make huge airplains, massive skyscrapers, and complex road systems than why can I learn the entirety of Circuitpython, soldering, and anything else. Haha

ivory kiln
#

You know, @quick veldt , one of the best teachers I ever had, ( I found out years later) was when I was in my 20's. I found out they literally at were only one maybe two lessons ahead of the class I was in. She had never taught before the class that she taught. She was a single mom of 3 kids, and had no time to do much of anything. But even still without any prior experience, nor with much of ANY for knowledge. was a great teacher. I'm telling Zenith, never doubt what you can be capable of achieving.

quick veldt
#

Will do

waxen thistle
#

Sorry, I had to dip out for a second there...

@ivory kiln Those aspirations you mentioned above will be a positive effect for the world regardless of any company you work for. We need more folks with your mindset -- it's comforting to know ya'll are out there.

And regarding learning electronics -- like anything in life, you aren't going to know everything about all topics. You can specialize, you can generalize, you can cherry-pick between those two.

Do what makes you happy in that regard. I generalize my learning until I hit a project snag, then I get frustrated -- and I stand toe-to-toe with the challenge until I not only conquer it, but I have mastered it inside and out. I've owned it. Beaten it into submission. It's the area where I'm a subject matter "expert".

ivory kiln
#

Lol, very true. As they say: do what you love & you'll never have to work a day in your life. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

waxen thistle
#

Well....hmm. That's a nice nugget of advice. And if I said it, it would be "do as I say, not as I do."

#

In polite terms, I've made compromises every step along the way. And although I can "always" change that, circumstances don't allow me to do so without strong consequences.

Hello, is anyone free to help me?

#

i have literally no clue what im doing

waxen thistle
#

Plus, with all the newer LCD displays available, I think I can put a nice spin on that control board.

heavy siren
#

@zenith pike Explain please, maybe one of us can help.

zenith pike
#

Okay, so i bought an arduino Nano, and im trying to connect it to a 12v rgb led light strip, and im trying to figure out how to connect it so that the usb 2.0 thats connected to the nano can power the strip also

heavy siren
#

@zenith pike Well, you shouldn't do that but you can by getting a voltage converter. Otherwise, get a seperate supply and use a 2n2222 trany to interface the signal line.

#

Adafruit has some very good guides on using 12 volt light strips. I suggest you check them out.

zenith pike
#

Okay, but this is what im trying to follow atm, and im just trying to figure out if i can connect the usb 2.0 to a wall adapter after i add on the program

#

because in the video, he leaves it attached to his computer

#

so im not sure

heavy siren
#

I suppose the wall adapter will work as long as it provides 5 to 9 volts. Your getting 5 volts from the computer via USB so just connect a 5 volt adapter like you want to do. I would think it will work as long as the 12 volt conversion is already done.

zenith pike
#

okay awesome

#

tysm for your help!!

heavy siren
#

Anytime, that's what Adafruits Discord is for.

zenith pike
#

okay, sorry to bother you again, but I have another quick question

#

The led strip that i have has 4 wires, red, green, blue, and a 12v one

#

but in the video, theres only a red, green, and 12v one

haughty quiver
#

That sounds like an analog strip that you can change all at once, rather than a NeoPixel style strip that you can individually address each LED.

#

With those, you put 12V to positive voltage and then ground each of the R,G, and B wires to get red, green, blue or mixtures of them.

zenith pike
#

okay awesome :)

#

thanks so much

haughty quiver
zenith pike
#

Also, on amazon, every picture shows the led strip with different color lights at the same time

haughty quiver
#

Oh, OK, I looked at your Amazon link, forget what I said about analog strips!

zenith pike
#

okay haha

haughty quiver
#

I'm trying to figure out what those are and how you control them.

zenith pike
#

okay cool

haughty quiver
#

I don't think they're individually addressable, so more like the analog strips I mentioned, but not sure how they're doing the patterns.

#

I suspect it will come down to using MOSFETs like that guide shows.

zenith pike
#

mosfets?

haughty quiver
#

they are transistors that are used for switching power on and off to a big, power hungry device using a small control signal, such as what the Nano can provide to do the switching.

zenith pike
#

could i possibly not use those

#

and just connect the led strip to my nano

ivory kiln
#

I was just watching your unboxing of Adabox 008 @haughty quiver while wondering what might come in Adabox 009. & a quandry arose. Has anyone ever tried, or do you think it could or would, 2 different CP devices, like The CPX on a Cricket interacting with a Hallowing? Say for instance, Hallowing goes to turn it's eye to the right so a command is sent & the CPX on the Cricket with motors steers to the right. Giving the appearance that it's a single unit, lol a single little creature, working as one.

#

Could even dress him in a fuzzy cloth or something, or print up a little head (for the Hallowing) & a body.

river peak
#

@ivory kiln I've used an ESP8266 talking to an ATTiny, and a 328p talking with an ATTiny. It wouldn't be terribly difficult

#

And, I think that you can (With some effort) connect the Hallowing to a Crickit

ivory kiln
#

That is cool @river peak . What kind of interaction was there between them? Sensor data, instructions?

river peak
#

The 328p was just an experiment to get it to work. The ESP8266 was a lot more complex. The 8266 controlled a TFT, while the ATTiny ran the buttons, backlight, voltage regulator/power, etc

#

It was all done via i2c

ivory kiln
#

Nice!

river peak
#

Also, the Crikit, the Joy FeatherWing, and the SeeSaw are all run by SAMD microcontrollers (Specially programmed)

ivory kiln
#

What do you mean by specially programmed?

river peak
#

They don't run Arduino/CircuitPython

ivory kiln
#

How do the CPX & the cricket work together if the Cricket doesn't use CP?

river peak
#

Just like any other periphrial.

#

If I remember correctly, the Crickit uses i2c

#

So, master device sends commands with a specific address. Subsidiary device with that address sees those commands, and executes them

ivory kiln
#

What language are the commands in? I2C?

river peak
#

They're not in a specific language.

#

You send the I2C device info, and what it does with that info depends on how it is programmed.

ivory kiln
#

Ok, got it.

#

What language does the Hallowing work in / communicate in?

#

As I'm guessing that there will be one in the Adabox I ordered. lol, My first Adabox, gotta admit I'm a little excited. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

river peak
#

Hallowing uses CircuitPython by default, but it can also use Arduino. Not sure if it's supported by MakeCode yet

ivory kiln
#

Guessing I should stop working on learning MakeCode & get back to learning CP then huh?

river peak
#

There's nothing wrong with learning MakeCode

#

but yeah, it does look like the Hallowing doesn't have MakeCode yet

ivory kiln
#

And assuming, (hoping) that one is going to be in AdaBox 009, I should switch. Ok @river peak , can you recommend the best tutorial / project for a total noob to start learning CP? Mind u the only board I have so far is a CPX.

river peak
#

CPX is a wonderful starting point.

#

Honestly, I don't have any specific recommendations right now (And am arguing with a headache and a dozen other things at the moment), but there are a ton of Learn articles for the CPX and CP

ivory kiln
#

O ya! Of all of the $1000 + of Ada products that I lost, I'm thankful that it's a CPX that I was lucky enough to still have.

#

B12 is really really great for migraines! B12, Magnesium, & Calcium combined work really well. Advil liquigels work really well for getting rid of my migraines.

river peak
#

I wouldn't call it a migraine, but thanks for the advice.

ivory kiln
#

Certainly, Hope you feel better & thanks for the help. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

haughty quiver
#

@zenith pike no, the Nano can supply 5V at a very small current (60mA IIRC). Those strips will require an external 12V supply. If you want to try to replicate the very cool cutting board mouse pad project more closely without adding additional power supply and circuit, you will want to use a thin NeoPixel strip instead of those 12V lights you linked to.

small pelican
#

I was wondering if anybody can help me there's a sketch that's already been built I would just like to add a button so if I press it it will turn on and off and if I hold it it will dim my lights I'm not a programmer I can just flash edit a little code but that's about it any help would be appreciated
