@quick veldt you can play tones now, wave playback is something we are thinking about but there's a lot that has to happen first
The MakeDo screws -- are the the set listed in the store, or are they a subset of them?
so for now we recommend circuitpython - we designed it specificaly with audio-playback capability
yeah I read that on the guide
@waxen thistle this is a special mini pack!
Tool already lost
@proper trench Thanks -- I'll make sure not to take off the two sets on my wishlist then ๐
Yes. I've already lost the tool even though mine hasn't shipped yet!
Making hex drives must be difficult, what with having to find a witch/sorcerer and all...
Personally I can't wait to hook up the robotic arm I bought to the crickit
I have a project idea
@river peak the option to choose program the Metro M4 in circuitpython or arduino language is just perfect to me
Oh goodness. The 3D printer is going to be busy churning out mounts and brackets and such...
@quick veldt you can drive up to 4 servos with the crickit for sure, but dont forget to get a good 5V power supply, AA"s wont cut it!
Oh yeah. I want to order the 5V 4A supply
Big Trac OP
Those are my top two TT motor accessories - orange gummy wheel and the pulley.
The robotic arm I have (That has languished and sat gathering dust for far too long) is powered by 4 D-cells at 6v. They were really clever in getting the 3v for the control - Just a wire out of the middle of the batteries
@fallow fractal They seem wheely nice
@proper trench How many more Adaboxes do you guys have left to ship out?
we've shipped the majority, hundreds going out every day!
If you're up the creek, you at least have a robotic paddle!
@analog acorn ICYMI we have a 3D printable mount for the CRICKIT pcb with some add-ons ๐
@proper trench How many were signed up for? I know you were close to hitting the limit, but I don't remember what that limit was
4000!
they did hit the limit
I almost didn't even get to subscribe. But someone cancelled their subcription.
Twist Ties > Zip Ties
Wow. Congrats LadyADA!
Phew
That's amazing
enjoy em!
I will indeed
We will enjoy them for sure. Thank you all for your hard work!
thank you for supporting us!
This box is perfect for kiddos!
we couldn't do it without ya
@untold ingot yay we hope so! many of the projects start easy, but can team up with adults for more complex parts
@hard hollow Thank you! I did in deed miss it, but I'll go grab the files....
great for beginners and experts together
I saw a blog post about someone who cancelled their hackerbox and then restarted their adabox subcription because "Adafruit actually cares about people." I have to agree with him. What you've created with adafruit is a real inspiration to all of us. Thank you for making great electronics and a great community.
@proper trench I've found those pop rivets, but a thicker version for 3-4 layers of cardboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079YGLZ3Z/
@faint dock sure thing, it's in the guide here https://learn.adafruit.com/mount-for-crickit also on thingiverse
4000 of these!
and adabox010 is in design phase, adabox011 is a twinkle but we know what it'll be
@hard hollow Perfect! And I have both black and yellow PLA. ๐
my nephew loved the adabot puzzle ๐
they'll all be really good
Ok, the value side of me is going WOOOOO HOOOOO. Folks....that was all for $60. It's like buying a CPX + Crickit....and getting everything else for free. This is so awesome.
I'm sure
I'm curious about 009, 010, and 011
stay curious! but its sekret
Soon 5000 subscribers for sure!
I'd love to make something for a box at some point.
I've got a bunch of boards that need work. That'll come after BronyCon, though
Hmmmm. I'm designing a team building exercise at Microsoft. Was going to do CircuitPython (for engineers), but I should at least mention MakeCode....
@river peak im sure your code and contributions will appear in an adabox guide!
macarena
@analog acorn it is microsoft makecode ๐
@proper trench Right! That's why I should at least mention it. LOL.
@proper trench My code is less likely. Coding is easily my least favorite part about this hobby. Although being able to use Python now is a significant bit of awesome
On the other hand, I love building things and boards and whatever. I've got a Hall Effect Array feather that I still need to solder up...
@river peak Coding is like playing volleyball. I love it, but you probably don't want me on your team. ๐
cool!
@proper trench While you are here I just want to say that you are a big inspiration to me and I want you to know that Adafruit has single handedly kickstarted a great career for me and probably many others. So keep doing great things!
I'd love to see a kit like this available in the AdaStore. A nice one-stop-shop I can recommend to friends + their kids.
If anyone likes to live on the edge, there's a beta of makecode that lets you upload code via web USB ๐
yay thanks @quick veldt for being part of the community
@waxen thistle we'll hvae this box in the store like the others, and probably some other 'intro to robotics' kits
yes please. dragging the file is my least favorite part of makecode
now we have something easy - until now it was just too hard
I'm going to echo @quick veldt - Without @proper trench and Adafruit, I would never have been able to learn board design and programming and Phoenixborn
would simply not exist
@quick veldt there is a webusb support for makecode - i think its working still. no clicking/dragging
yes thats what noe mentioned
@quick veldt https://makecode.adafruit.com/beta?webusb=1#editor
Will there be a crickit for micro:bit?
yes
Code name: fat ram slot crickit
I'm sure that's Noe problem.
nath, yep, we have to port some code over but Its Not Out Yet
@bronze stratus its a secret, but...
@proper trench you have no idea how much I was yelling "Yes! She gets it!" at the monitor during the last AAE regarding getting into robotics. I've been feeling that way for years, and I am a maker myself. Imagine how those new to the hobby feel....
@river peak Noe way!
Yeah! You guys rock!
totally!
@waxen thistle i really think that the inaccessability of robotics has been a unspoken shame of makers/engineers
nobody talks about it, but we all know ๐ฆ
im hoping that crickit helps. maybe its not perfect, but it could inspire something better ๐
Sounds like an RA (robotics anonymous) meeting
"Perfect" is highly subjective. Sometimes 80% is an excellent goal to reach.
OH NO can't hear you! @haughty quiver
It would be perfect if it could fly
@haughty quiver You're very quiet right now
quick, hit the big RED button!
Great job John as always ๐
I think microcontrollers in general have been inaccessible to many younger people. I never found the arduino IDE fun. Circuit python on the other hand, is great. What we have now is just leaps and bounds over what we had just a few years ago.
very humid johnpark
Is that phone still broke?
I thought John was an Animatronic escaped from disney
@normal plover He....isn't?
*Robotics Flashbacks
Man, rover kits are... boring
Lawn !!!!!
I just accidentally found out that YouTube (in Chromium) has vi keybindings. ;)
hey don't insult poor adabox 002
adabox002 was great! but we can do better every box ๐
I liked line followers, but then there was no line
Crickit alert
Cickint alert your fellow robot alert
Rovers are awesome, they absolutely have a place -- but they're not flexible and you easily get locked into a form-factor, accessories, etc.
rovers are from mars
Thanks to adabox 002 now I have four DC motors and a chassis
Random thought: I don't know why, but I'd love to see a bright yellow circuit board.
@quick veldt crickit can fit on that rover ๐
can it be mounted with hardware?
there's 8 holes, i think two can line up
@spring heath Thanks for an awesome guide!
we didnt have makecode back then ... but now we do!
AND you can laser cut cardboard. ๐
now you can make huge fun with it
Ah yes. The crickit inspire cardboard cart.
Love that stroobe
Next on my tools to get is one of those paper cutters.
@river peak I don't have one, but there's on in the Microsoft Makerspace...
@river peak I've been eyeing the Glowforge, but their "needs internet connection" part scares me. The Cri-Cut (man these names are so similar) is also next on my list.
FYI conductive tape is perfect to use on cardboard robotics
Hoping I see one on sale (either just the machine or a package with additional attachments) this Amazon Prime Day.
very compact
@analog acorn The MS Makerspace is a little out of my way
@river peak Did you see Naiomi Wu's video on her new laser cutter? It's 60w and considerably less expensive than other options....
@river peak Well, yes, good point.
@analog acorn Do you have a link to it?
Hang on, I'll dig it out.
Ah yes. In the twitter teaser the stumble bot was getting by just fine without the crickit. Thanks for the crickit!
@analog acorn I have not seen it. But what qualifies as "Less expensive"?
RubbishRobot
@waxen thistle @river peak https://youtu.be/PcEmlSHe818
As many of you know I've been putting money aside for a laser Cutter forever. I finally got one! The timing was not great but it looks like it will be ok now...
MiscellanyMisfits
this little guy is on kickstarter
@analog acorn Thanks man!
are those three crickits?
No wonder they are out of stock. JP has them all!
lol we'll have more in the shop next week!
I have two Crickit Feathers -- because LORA ๐
Digikey had ~200 in stock last time I checked
I am hoping my adabox arrives soon.....
share stuff online, tweet / blog / facebook
me too
use #MakeRobotFriend as your tag!
ladyada you should discord more
this is a special time ๐
@analog acorn Looks like... $1000-2000ish
@hard hollow oh yeah good point - check digikey
@proper trench I'm so glad this has gone amazingly well for you and the team you've built at Adafruit

@river peak True, but I'm used to the 5000-8500 price range....
I had my local group of automation people together for our box opening. All 4 of use have our Adabox 008. Thanks
That was yesterday evening
- Embedded Evaluation Board
Thank you!
No. It's over already?
Kudos, @haughty quiver !!! Well done!
Back to Netflix I suppose
Thank you @haughty quiver and @proper trench for an awesome Adabox & unboxing video!
Thanks @proper trench @haughty quiver
don't forget to #MakeRobotFriend
I look forward to the next one.
we'd love to see what you build!
I have a few crickit ideas
#MakeRobotFriend

time for me to get back on show and tell....I was on once probably 2 years ago
good night everyone
thanks so miuch all!
cheers!
good night folx!
thanks @river peak
900D N19H7
bye @proper trench
[now to wait patiently for mine to ship - given there are 4k of them, it gives me more time to think of what to build!]
Good night and thanks for this great adabox ๐
@waxen thistle you and me both
@waxen thistle At 4000 of them, even 500/day is 8 days worth of shipping!
we've shipped out a bunch!
now lets #makerobotfriends
This is what Asimov said:
https://history.nasa.gov/sp482.pdf
Scroll to Page 56 for his talk.
The effort must be herculean. I hope everyone gets a nice rest after the last one is shipped out.
mine will probably be the last one if I'm being honest
I haven't got an adabox yet at this point. Don't have the room for all the extra parts, and most of them haven't been anything I'm super itching for. Maybe 009 will be something small-ish and something more to my interests.
Aw. No room for a robot friend? ๐ Everyone needs a robot friend...
ok later folkx!
Half my room is taken up by boxes holding stuff that I don't have a place for.
time to work on adabox 009 ๐
Later, @proper trench! I look forward to the next time you have a chance to chat here. It's fun!
But first...sleep. You deserve it!
I'm going to go back to soldering on these TFTs. 21 more to go!
And soldering TFTs is annoying, just going to say
I'll solder on!
@river peak
Yes!
adabox10 after adabox09
after adabox09, I expected adabox0A
@fading meadow the hex?
@shell mason seems only natural ๐
Native Adabox0A
Adab0x0A
@ @gray nest I think that's the best one.

Showtime!
@pearl shoal I think it's the light.
the background is like a pink purple @pearl shoal
Well then it's working perfectly ๐
Do you have the parts separately?
to show us?
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
I wonder if there's room to put the CP on the bottom - low-rider lights ๐
@pearl shoal ๐
@pearl shoal yes totally !
@pearl shoal It also needs some floodlights on the top. And a subwoofer for the sound.
And the front should bounce ๐
Mic went out
AUDIO!

Lazy Suzan?
@deep basin Lol.
Hmmmm idea for a project. Perhaps a guide on how to write a python script to connect to twitch chat (like a chat bot), and have the cricket run a command when a keyword in chat is said
Sound's gone again.
๐ค
The same things happens to John Park. He's got a fix for it.
@lavish patrol the audio thing?
Yep.
Screen says ultimaker - which printer did that?
sorry, this is the inventor 2
How does the speed/quality compare to the older FlashForge Creator Pro?
Break it - break it! ๐
The old FlashPrint did neat supports with branching
FlashPrint also lets you split a model well
Can you print with a SD card?
mmmm don't you just love navigating all the 'more' labeled menus of a new device. ...must touch every button.....
What size filament? Also, can you use any brand?
@deep basin yes always an adventure ๐
I found that the Simplify3D "priming" G-Code did a better job at wiping the head before it started
Cheers friends!
Thanks Noe and Pedro!

Thanks for the excellent show!
thanks for hanging out folks!

I'm usually working at this time but I'll be at home (with a better job) from now on. So i'll be back again next week!

i havent looked, because i still need to build my prusa, is there a group of templates for all of the adafruit boards
I can see some burning steel wool.

oh, you WISH, Zenith ๐
@quick veldt I wish
today i broke the wires off my little 3.7 battery - can i re-solder them without blowing up?
Def. upside to signing in to Discord... :^)
Ah well....gotta save up
@slow flint I had some extra long header strip in stock. I think I got it off Amazon at one point.
thx. bummer. i'm not the best at soldering
Thank you for doing the Live. Do you stock/have advice for any high torque (40+ kg-cm), low R.P.M ( 5-10 R.P.M.) ultra quiet (10-20 dB) D.C. Motors? #askanengineer
@alpine nova I've done it. It really depends on the size of the battery. Smaller batteries? Wouldn't recommend it. Larger ones are easier.
@alpine nova Send it to Big Clive. ๐
Yeah, but I can't see the show with Discord sucking up the whole screen. One of my beefs with it.
Ah. I put discord up on an iPad, really really handy this way
@fallen rivet Multi-monitors!
@fallen rivet You need a second screen. ๐
it's tiny - just like the one they demoed the little display with
Or third, or fourth....
ewww i sold those
like an inch square maybe
OK, multi-screen laptop. Probably not.
did you switch the ringer on?
What about a Bat Phone? ๐
what are they giving away? The joystick?
@river peak @alpine nova I've removed, shortened, and reattached the leads form a bunch of 500 mAh LiPos.
I'm in terminal discord now mu hee hee ha ha
i cant tell you how many people came in and said it didint work, and that was the reason
@fallen rivet most laptops can have a second monitor. Also, there's nice USB 3.0 monitor things you can get.
Neon!
My #6 is running off of one, and it's great.
@odd stream is that smaller than this one
The pay-phone broke? I thought they were indestructible.
They're about an inch square
the ring is not as jaring, im all for it
Yeah, but I don't carry a second monitor around with my laptop. The port existing isn't the problem.
@noble grove It's probably the interface.
yea, that's what it think this is
There are even USB 2.0 monitors that aren't too shabby -- I wouldn't run video off of them, but they're great for email or reference.
@fallen rivet I remember, years ago, using my android tablet as a second monitor for a laptop
it is the 500mAh
Yeah, seems like you could Cast to one now.
@fallen rivet You need a second laptop. ๐
Mac plus duet plus iPad... awesome
Grats Dave from Cleveland!
If you have an iPad, you can use the DUET DISPLAY app for a wired second monitor (depending on the model of the ipad, more recent ones give better results).
IPad is probably the handiest/smallest 2nd portable
i should be able to do it then maybe?
What we need are cheap, bright pocket DLP projectors!
Yes
i would love a pocket projector!
Get one of those banana phones.
That'd be the sh!t, wouldn't it.
How about an old hand-crank phone, @open girder
They need an old fashioned phone
@alpine nova If you're comfortable with it.
use a headset from those cheezy box stores that made every emp look "important"
@open girder Phone Of The Week?
I used to have a princess phone.
That one, yes
or better yet, ditch the projector and replace with a giant led screen
terminal discord
@alpine nova It never occured to me to worry about it... solder, meet iron.
I'll take a look for that terminal Discord, thanks for the lead.
@waxen thistle With a grandfather clock beside it.
@odd stream you're probably more experienced than me
Thanks @open girder, @dim knot, and Company! Have a great Wednesday/Week everyone!
I ordered a feather crickit, that should tide me over until I get my adabox
Great show @open girder ! MAKE a nice day/evening everyone. Chicago signing off. Dinner time.
i will go for it tho
@alpine nova Just make sure the wires don't wander around.
They're really close together.
Can you give your emps paid time off to be president?
yes, understand
I want to work for Adafruit.... It sounds so nice.
@alpine nova Might be a good idea to discharge it first.
how?
terminal discord needs nodejs.org and npm (think it's included) and discord.js
@fallen rivet As an aside, we do tend to avoid political conversations here. They tend to lead to not the most polite conversation.
you can't discharge to a low enough level to make sense w/o ruining it.
@alpine nova hook a feather or soemthing to it and turn the neopixel on full ๐
@fallen rivet Oh.. ok.. my bad.
but the wires broken off
copy this, too
@odd stream But the wire's broke?
@river peak doah
That's good for a capacitor, but not a lithium battery.
@open girder Thanks again for another wonderful evening of shows!
Bye @open girder ๐
haha
the front fell off! 9front.org
That's part of what the regular chip on the battery is designed to guard against.
what about heat sinking aything past the soldier point
@fallow fractal Hah! It's been a while since I've seen that one
Can you post a picture of the battery, @alpine nova ?
maybe i could use mini alligator clips
Bye everyone. ๐
@Andon seen which?
The wires shouldn't be so think that you'd need to dwell on the joint. Not like a TO-220 package, or anything.
(thick, not think)
Ooof, both wires.
Yeah, some ninja skillz should fix it :-).
it was just one, but then the other broke off while i was moving it out of my robot
It's super simple to do those - Pull the kapton tape back, strip the wire, heat the existing solder and put the wire in.
But... you need to make sure the wires are in the right spots
Iโd think tack soldering would get you there
With some added solder; dab with flux first
i'm really terrible with tiny wires - keeping them attached
Yeah, maybe pre-tin either the wire or the pad to make it easier with only two hands.
2.5 -3.5 seconds of heat
@fallen rivet The pads are already pre-tinned from previous attachments
then maybe just fresh flux
ah, there is that problem...
think?, stands back few feet...
Check with the meter first
ah good idea
but have a saucepan lid around, just in case... ๐
Two mods I found for the screwdriver:
WARNING - this is a work in progress.
This is designed to let you run your ES120/ES121 electronic screwdriver by depressing a lever on the side allowing for finer control when holding the screwdriver at the tip.
Print it using 0.1mm layer height and use a M3 nylon screw/nut...
i think it is drained - no reading
or a terracotta pot to chuck it into
Should have at least some residual power in it
That is odd
Enough to twitch the meter
Did you get under the kapton tape covering the contacts?
Not sure if the batt protection chip helps with shorts or not.
i just went in thru hole in tape where wires came out
I'd probably peel back the tape and give yourself clear access to the whole pad. You may need it.
i will for soldering
Gotta run. I got a dinner beer waiting for me.
thanks everybody. i'll let you know how it goes
Best of luck, vj
thx @eager sapphire
Hello everyone. Is John Park's Workshop on today???
hello. I have no idea but I sure hope so ^^
He should be on now but the live Youtube link is showing last nights Ask an Engineer.
@rapid hornet Hello Scott. I can't seem to get John Park's Workshop showing in Adafruits Live youtube link.
JP is out this week.

hello!
Good morning all you wonderful people!
That rover doesn't look too aerodynamic. In fact, it's kinda blocky. โฝ
Hello @waxen thistle How you doin today?
@heavy siren Oh, the usual. Dealing with the typical. How about you man?
I'm fine. Getting ready to go to school. Thought I'd check in to the webcast for a while.
I normally am not at home during this time, so it's a nice treat to have in the background while working
@waxen thistle thanks for having us ๐

Next week? Oh buoy, I can't wait!
@waxen thistle maybe! lets see if i can get to go with the camera on it
Hopefully you can ship it on time ๐
Thanks for another awesome show @hard hollow and @rocky reef !
Yes, great show again, thanks dudes
thanks for hanging out folks!
Question: whatโs the usual cause of a print fail like we just saw in the trailer?
One of the great mysteries of life?
I usually attribute it to something going really well in my life so far, so universal maker karma needs to balance things out.
I've found a nozzle getting blocked -- probably too humid in my case.
Roger that, Mr. C. 50% karma, 50% nozzle crud.
Oh hey! for once im NOT exhausted and/or away from my house on a wednesday evening! Guess I'll watch show and tell. I dont think I could get my Lightsaber ready enough to show it off tonight
Hope to get on tonight ๐
I won't be on tonight, but I'll be watching

Mmmm. Icecream.
@river peak It's a bit drizzly here too in NJ/NYC.
Same here in Colorado - got a break in the heat courtesy sudden t-storms every afternoon
@waxen thistle I think it's pretty much the entire east coast.
They tell us we're getting thunderstorms on Friday. So the eclipse gets obscured.
The eclipse is... eclipsed?

Make sure every one gets registered to vote too.
You know you've made it if you can throw an election.
I grew up in a country where voting is compulsory.
Nature of my work is 24/7 -- so forget about holidays like President's Day, MLK Jr. Day, etc. They happily guilt-trip and twist your arm to do holidays like 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, etc
Here's it's repulsory! ๐
@rapid osprey that Andrew Sorensen jam is fantastic!

I know my day job would never go for it. We close precisely one day: Christmas.
would you want to make tamper free voting machines
Needing the day off is the first sign that someone has made it too hard for you. Those states need to go away.
Oh, my sweet summer child PT -- if I sent in "What would it take...", I think it'd either be laughed at or I'd paint a target on my back ๐
"We give you vacation days, use one of those." is probably the response. Unfortunately.
@waxen thistle Yep, similar

Circuit Playgrounds make me feel happy
@river peak Such is the fate of customer service jobs. Regardless of who your "customer" actually is.
Theyโre very well designed. Software and Hardware. Not to mention itโs a great value for the price.
@quick veldt the CPX is my hands-down favorite board. it's my go-to for a quick prototype -- so much is built-in, reduces the need for early debugging.
Yeah. Things like the Uno just seem so outdated now.
Great for some things, but not most quick prototyping anymore
@waxen thistle Need an M4 version ๐
@rapid hornet I remember the person from PyCon that made the morse code on the Gemma
yup!
Don't get me wrong, full dev boards like the Uno/Metro/etc certainly have their place -- but I won't lie, they're never the ones I reach for first. It's the CPX --- and yes @odd stream, I'd love an M4 version. That would be amazing.
FYI, one of the devices Jim wants to switch his sip&puff between is a Morse code to as II converter ๐

Adafruit is diving into robotics. I believe theyโre making a splash in the robotics space with crickit.
@quick veldt Noe and Pedro are building a CPX + Crickit boat
@hard hollow @rocky reef For that little boat you printed you could mount a brushless miniquad motor to it and use silicone conformal coating to waterproof an ESC and a receiver to make an RC boat. then just get a battery pack that wont have an issue with the water or make a waterproof housing for it!!!
circuitpython / makecode + robotics and adafruit hardware is here'
