alpine nova
#

you hand soldered all 1728?!

narrow ice
#

hell no

alpine nova
#

oh ok

narrow ice
#

panels are 768, 3x 32x8 panels x 2

alpine nova
#

that would be insane yes

#

especially on the playa

narrow ice
#

then 4 strips for 48 pixels, all pre-soldered too

#

still plenty of solder in between though

spring heath
alpine nova
#

so, still a lot of joints

narrow ice
#

yeah, it was maybe a week of work for the hardware and 4weeks+ for the software

and who ever has their playa projects done before they get to the playa

narrow ice
#

that's just jinxing it, I know it'll break before I get there

alpine nova

yea, you gotta expect it all to fall apart when you get out there

Standardization - that's what I like to see. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I have spares because I know it will

#

the neopixel strips on the arms and legs is what breaks the most

alpine nova
#

i was on s&t a few years ago with my bike all el-wired out. that stuff started breaking as soon as i hit the bumpy playa

repeated flexing breaks the joins between pixels

it's hard to find people to help with that stuff out there too

fallow fractal

If the frames of animation are too big of a jump it'll cost ya a ping-pong ball (but the waste is reusable).

#

The 'latitude' of the eyes are pretty consistent, John. Nice job by eye. (..ahem)

young adder
#

๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

And now, let's hope the ping pong balls are well attached ๐Ÿ˜ƒ otherwise... bye bye balls ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

fallow fractal
#

You can look through an electric fan, John. That'll strobe it.

#

(aim the fan blades so it exhausts the air away from the pong platter, to avoid disturbing it)

#

Sodium street lamps at night and knobby tires on a bicycle -- at a specific rolling rate it gives the stop-motion effect.

#

very close

#

the camera scan lines are showing choppy vid compared with what you see in the studio with your own eyes

#

Tune for the six balls to be distinct from each other, turning very slowly.
The zero-beat point will move from ccw to cw rotation, and occasionally stand still.

#

Impressive: no pong balls flew off the platter.

young adder
#

given that the camera captures 30 images per seconds, shouldn't the LED flash at 30 Hz so we can see it working ?

inner spade
#

Or dotstars or regular white LEDs

fallow fractal
#

Use discrete white LED's rather than 'protocol' LED's.

#

(an IR xmitr LED can be modulated to 38 KHz!)

young adder
#

like 10 common cathod LEDs ?

inner spade
#

... or fewer. The Disneyvision used six.

eager sapphire
#

That was only awesome, @haughty quiver , thanks. Scared me a lil bit.

haughty quiver

odd stream

haughty quiver

odd stream
#

Crickit controlled pingpong server bot

eager sapphire
#

Best part is, a flying ping pong ball doesnโ€™t hurt that much - no matter how hard your sister hits it

haughty quiver
#

@young adder i think you're onto something with the framerate needing to accomodate camera capture

#

then adjust motor speed to get the strobe effect right

eager sapphire
#

So camera frame rate drives the system (since itโ€™s pretty much static)

inner spade
#

You now have an excuse to pick up a slow-mo camera. (high frame rate)

fallow fractal
#

Electric fan blades (regular room-sized cooling fan for people to sit near) were very good to see the scan lines on the Macintosh (which had a 50 Hz refresh!)

young adder
#

Yeah, but in real life, we don't need cameras - or maybe to show off to friends and familly ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

fallow fractal
#

When you unplug the fan and it slows, at some point it synchronizes perfectly with the CRT refresh.

#

Should be a way to PWM the motor windings to help synchronize as well.

haughty quiver
#

haha @inner spade slomo cam yes please

eager sapphire
#

Or perhaps use optical encoder to detect position of the shaft, use that to trigger lights (+ some adjustable delay)

fallow fractal
#

yeah meta that way you can be asynch all around ;)

eager sapphire
#

Then dial in shaft speed to match video rate

peak bloom
#

Or magnets under the balls with a hall effect sensor

eager sapphire
#

Yeah

young adder
#

alright guys, time to go to bed around here ! Cheers, tty next week !

fallow fractal
#

However you'd need a video capture to send to youtube that was async (movable timebase).

haughty quiver
#

night, thanks for hanging out

eager sapphire
#

Later Yannick

#

Iโ€™d think youโ€™d only have to synch to the local cam...but...well..

fallow fractal
#

There must be an acetate film to video (or the other direction) method used so that frame rates aren't visible to the audience to the final medium.

halcyon linden
#

@proper trench I know what you meaning by the hassles and delays as I worked on industrial automation in the heavy industry for over 30 years

waxen thistle
#

It boils down to one thing: momentum.

When introducing new topics, we have to work to make them simple yet rewarding with results. And we have to make it easy to continue.

Otherwise we will lose that hard-to-get momentum.

quick veldt
#

When I get momentum I just keep going. Sometimes I hop from thing to thing so fast I create hazards

lethal lagoon
#

i think often people think that making things simple means nerfing it or making it less useful, but i see soooo many possibilities with just basic servos and motors, i will build the complexity later

opal wolf
#

That looks like electronic frosting.

quick veldt

But man, once we got them going -- having a group of dedicated, enthusiastic young folks constructively attack a challenge -- that was really something to behold.

hum.. could this mini solenoid be used like a door or treasure chest lock ?

heavy siren

I used this same solenoid to release a magnetic bomb from my drone. Worked great.

young adder

thanks I'll check the guides !!

but why would someone not watch the show ?? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

well, the male version actually

How would you drive the solenoid without a Crickit ?

I think it was that more than the firmware :)

Lol heck yes to Black Dog

the two timings together in that song always make my head explode

do it!

some international restriction might prevent them to sell that outside the U.S. though...

#

ok, time to go to sleep ! Thanks again guys, see you all next week !

see you @young adder

@young adder the Feather M4 Express can play .wav files in CircuitPython if you want to do sampled stuff.

@fallow fractal The M4 boards are all quite new

odd stream
#

@fallow fractal Cool. Yes, as @river peak says, they're all quite new.

They've been in the works since... late last year? ... and have been trickling out: Mtero, ItsyBitsy, and most recently the Feather.

YES! I wanted one of those coloring books! Thank you!

@waxen thistle Shall we color you impressed?

@prime sail @river peak I'm quite surprised because this is the first arduino compatible board they made that uses a microcontroller never used by any official arduino board before

@fallow fractal I presume (But @proper trench can confirm/deny) that much of the code to get the SAMD51 working was similar to the SAMD21, which certainly helps.

fallow fractal

@proper trench @river peak it brings a new level of processing power to arduino compatible boards without force us to code in a higher level language, that is what I was looking for

#

fern, yes! the M4 is so roomy, circuitpython runs very well on it. and arduino is super fast. its like a supercomputer

I've been very happy with the M4 metro so far, what a fully featured arduino dev board

river peak
#

@fallow fractal It brings a colossal amount of processing power. I'm planning on moving my DigiBadges to an M0 or M4 eventually. Currently they're on 328p chips. The numeric difference is staggering to consider
