@waxen thistle you're rocking the flower poems! now we need to figure out a discord role for it...
The plasma itself is a isotope of hydrogen called duterium. We use up to 80KVDC to accelerate the ions to the point where they can collide and fuse together, thus releasing nuetrons in the process
could you use uranium deuteride as a target? you could get fission to multiply the neutrons.
@muted mesa All in honor of valentines day ๐
You mean Discount Chocolate Eve ๐
I like the heart!
We use titanium, it acts as a sponge to hold the duterium
๐
@tacit kiln You got that right!
don't forget about the artichokes!!!
why titanium? why not zirconium or said uranium? lots of hydrides out there.
Also doesn't have the same level of risk as using fissile materials
@waxen thistle is our situational poet laureate
natural uranium isn't really that much fissile.
"join my murder army"
you can barely get it going in a candu rig.
Spreading and alpha emiter all around the inside of our chamber makes it a radioactive hazmat environment
That's really bad and makes it really hard to service safely
the same can be said about washing ore rocks in the kitchen sink.
Exactly, which is something else we don't do
@glossy glacier So, do you glow at night yet?
so that experiment is on me again. to the todo list it goes,! (the vacuum system is there for how many years?)
arguably thats the best part of what we do as tinkerers or coders or whatever name you want to call it. We are all different and our minds work in ways where, even though we are going towards the same goal we get there by different means
year of the ๐ถ
This year is going to be ruff
nurturing an idea of a lego-like set of vacuum components. so tubes of arbitrary function could be assembled with relative ease, whether a trigatron or a TWT or a xray source.
@river peak It's a dog-eat-dog world out there.
. o O ( is a religious war a god-eat-god world? )
life is like a dog kennel; you never know what you're going to step in. (combo dog-valentines-gump pun)
Nah, @vale cave - That was when Chronos was around
its a dog eat dog world and im wearing bacon flavored underpants
This system is designed to be a very safe very stable nuetron source, but all of that comes secondary to it being used as an educational device.
I'm REALLY excited about Particle
Particleโs Next Generation Hardware https://blog.adafruit.com/2018/02/13/particles-next-generation-hardware-particle-compatible-with-adafruit-feather/
@gaunt plume DM me any questions about them & mesh. Iโll be doing a deep dive tutorial guide.
also, nurturing an idea of one of the standard vacuum components being an ion pump assembly, so a sealed tube could be pumped again (in case of a tiny leak or outgassing) by attaching an external magnet and putting high voltage on the pump plates. (could that work?)
@odd stream OH! DM'ing
@gaunt plume Or topics I should cover
particle mesh of the meshes
Shad is more of an educational tool in the sense that he is a great example of what not to do ๐
how much of neutrons are you going to get? can it run for prolonged time? can it be used for neutron imaging?
@tacit kiln c'mon. am I not still alive and with all fingers and both eyes? ๐
bigga blinka
only cause i've spent the past ten years telling you NO ๐
did i ever listen? ๐
So much Blinka love!
@full lance Ok, so it's a bunch of shields which can connect to all types of networks, AND they prob. have an easy API to "mesh"/ connect your feather+particle together
"Different tongues for different situations" Oh my.
@lethal lagoon Yay!!! Hackspace!!
holy cow. those particle boards are cheap. ublox lte for $30?? sold!
The nuetron flux varies. It's not a point source, so imaging is hard. Definitely can be run for prolonged times with minimal interaction
@gaunt plume i dont understand though is it just a board with a bluetooth chip on it?
one has btle, one has wifi, one has LTE (cellular) afaik
and then a combination of them
can it be made into a point source? e.g. using focused deuteron beams? or perhaps using helium ions and bombarding a beryllium target?
@full lance they all have the nrf52 and then have a second chip for the additional wireless stuff
You need a really small point source, and for that you quickly get in to propper accelarator territory
my question is what is it solving or why is it needed
even a humble old CRT is a charged particle accelerator, when we look at it.
I'm debating if I should get some Particle boards....don't have a project in mind yet...
Though they seem very cool.
@full lance think of it as adding a possible local wireless network, inside a wide area network.
@full lance wireless data collection is how I'd describe it

Toronto!
@sacred isle Thanks! ๐
you are 'certainly' good at it. A+
@full lance you can add C to circuitpython code and call it directly but its definitely not as easy

@open girder, what is the field of view for the IR sensor on the CPX? basically, will you always need to be in front/on top of the botic rover thingy...?
@muted mesa It's incredibly wide. And bounces off of things.
kattni wil know. ๐
there it is!
that's the only constraint i could see to using IR, but I'm sure they already thought about it.
I have that tiny remote Adafruit sells and I can aim it almost parallel with the board and it will register relatively consistently.

having robot controller is cool
@open girder 1989 for Python.
Thanks and good night.
In 1994 I got my first Internet (ISP) account and found out about Linux. perl was big and python was barely known.
perl was where it was at in the 90s ๐
Yeah I had the Camel Book. Loved it.
@magic osprey heya, reading over your PR for 1306
@gaunt plume Wrong channel?
meant to pm, my bad!
Oh even better. ๐ Figured you meant to be in #circuitpython-dev
@gaunt plume #circuitpython-dev is better too so I can eavesdrop. I think I just approved the PR you were going to talk about
SO my mic & (more importantly) camera were attached to the benchtop... which wiggles very slightly when I'm printing. The arms accentuate that wiggle so that I couldn't record while printing. And I seem to be printing pretty much all the time at the moment. So I moved the arms to a different piece of furnature. I meant to try recording a test video just now. But hit "Start Streaming" instead.... so I tested recording as well as the live streaming connection. It all worked. Let me know what you think. https://youtu.be/9s57VQ4SslU
I think autofocus might have been still on. My big concern was that the noise of the printer would be picked up too much. It's barely noticable.. I โค this mic.
Print noise is audible but not distracting from speech. Great camera positioning and completely steady. Focus is fine.
Nice video.
quick and simple q
sound is great, good enough that it caught the S* at the end even lol, great setup.
Haha... oops. That's when I realized I'd hit start streaming rather than recording.
I trimmed that end bit off. Getting to know the youtube toolset as well.. bonus.
win/win
I knew a guy who decided he was a radio station. So he turned his apartment into one, with tons of gear, and stationing (chair, desk surface, mic and headphones) for four people at once. It was a riot to visit there. After setting aside the impolite (and unasked) questions I was thinking, it really did pass pretty well as a radio station. Via Internet only, of course.
He just did it as a hobby.
That's pretty sweet actually @fallow fractal
He did have clients that came to record there (I met some) and a few sponsored spots (local businesses) and a newsgathering source (he was his own reporter). The whole thing was just, like, what? but he really put into it, and people responded.

Indeed. @rocky reef I like some aspects of the wire spool caddy, but not that it takes bench space and also would be prone to get push aside, burried, etc (on my bench at least ๐ ). I'm about to resupply with wire (24g solid & 30g stranded silicon) so that's 12 spools. I'm looking at designing a rack that will mount on my tool board. @haughty quiver I don't have a Wizarding World wand, but I do have one from Great Wolf Lodge. I wanted to use it with the CPX, but the frequency is different than what CPX uses. It is a simple IR LED at the tip. It has a movement detector in it (one of those with a small ball-bearing like actuator). But it uses 38 KHz and CPX is 36 KHz (or vice-versa, can't remember.)
Any suggestions for new voice commands?

@turbid elbow I programmed it with the four houses as chosen by the two push buttons and slide switch (gives you four choices). But it is just as easy to program it to choose randomly. My son wanted his friends in certain houses, so I had to be able to choose manually.
ah, this site is saying wizarding world just has an ir reflector on the wand tip and uses opencv https://www.learnopencv.com/using-harry-potter-interactive-wand-with-opencv-to-create-magic/ @soft dawn

@ornate coyote haha, thank, you're right, I am so often on the verge of being out of space :)
@soft dawn That makes sense
is it cynobit synobit? can't seem to find it
@haughty quiver Ah, cool. Perhaps I can bring one back and use it at home. I had an issue with the strength of the IR though. You really have to blast out in order for the camera to see the reflection. That's why I had to do it in the dark.
Just subbed to Unexpected Maker cuz @fallow fractal so bossy

@buoyant basin that's what I'll be doing tomorrow on my livestream https://blog.adafruit.com/2018/02/20/john-parks-workshop-live-2-22-18-adafruit-johnedgarpark-adafruit/
@soft dawn you can get cheap ir illuminators on Amazon they are for CCTV cameras
You bet, @ornate coyote
@soft dawn that would be cool -- I'll bet they're using a big honkin' IR array like you do in a mocap system
they have those drawing boards you can shoot ir light at them and draw with ir light too right? that would be cool to draw with wands
@haughty quiver Perhaps Universal went the reflection route to cut down on the cost of the wands. They're not cheap at Great Wolf Lodge!
maybe its like a nintendo light gun
yes, it's really smart, because I believe those are pretty danged expensive there, but probably super cheap to produce
all the cost went into the IR blaster and opencv system
@radiant ridge Yes, that's why I had 10 of them - because they are fairly inexpensive. I probably could stand to have more to get better coverage and strength.

@sacred isle Looks like it's reading exlamation points at the end of single-words.
@river peak not a fan, either.

@inner spade No, it's cardboard.

@clear matrix it's fixed
No cardboard in the datacenter.

yeah I was packing up the boxes the other day to bring to the recycling center and saw that
there was a guy awhile back that made furniture out of cardboard

@open girder I know they have wordpress and stuff out there for website design. What does adafruit's website run off of?

as a hearing impaired person , i hate it when stuff is video only
the Movi is the best arduino shield for voice recognition but its basically just the same thing, pocketsphinx
When the site is built on ten open source platforms. It becomes difficult to maintain as you hash together tons of code.
James Martel on youtube asks: any thoughts on using circuit python express to create a robot with obstacle avoidance and dc motors??
ok I'll check it out @fallow fractal
otherwise your forced to send your voice over the internet with google aiy or amazon echo
@vernal mulch from my small amount of experience with pygame, a lot of optimizing has to do with decisions on what layer/objects to redraw. whole screen obviously takes longer than not...
I want to make an alarm clock that turns off when hit with a nerf dart. (A circular 3d printed enclosure with the front acting as the target. Will the Circuit Playgroundโs shock sensor be sensitive enough to detect a hit?
yeah. python isn't fast...well, compared to C/C++.
@karmic sparrow great idea! yes, the Circuit Playground would register that hit.

i honestly think 4K is just a money scheme
same here ๐
well, at around 60", 4K can make a difference...
they only made it to kill GPU's
i like the detail.. but do we need that?
if you have a 4k camera and a 4k screen i guess ya gotta get your $ worth ๐

other than that, 720p is the most viewed and use-able

hey @harsh bone
maaahn I want to make a 'feather' fly with a feather wing.. wonder if i can make a mini drone from feather stuff
seesaw?
I think they call this Kit bashing ๐
"pins for days"
nice. and let seesaw do the stepper pulse generation.
Should get all fancy and make a board with USB C!!!!
we do have those what, 4 or 5, pins available after motors. can't leave open pins, right?
usb c would increase the costs a lot and add some complex ... complexities, one day tho
Support for a Hall effect sensor would be nice.
lol...that was sarcasm.
@lean grail oOooO ๐
IR sensor for remote control?
Most common sensor used for motor movement
oh, we have some ir stuff ๐
@muted mesa Got a 28" and 24" 4k monitor on my current PC. couldn't live without the 4k. But I don't need 4k streams. 1080p is plenty. I don't maximize windows. 1 4k screen = 4 1080p quadrants ๐
Whatโs the clock rate on this for the PWM divider?
I missed hearing that
Something HUGE yes?
A big darlington pair to drive big current motors ๐
@thorny raptor i've just never experienced anything that really needs 4K. but, i don't entirely discredit other uses for it... what drives your need for 4K? video/gaming work?
I like how the diodes are huge compared to the FETs
@muted mesa oh, we will not be doing 4k
1080p and 720p with 720p being the most used/viewed
Sold!
good start indeed!
@harsh bone Why BJTs? Aren't FETs better for high current control?
@muted mesa mostly work. having 4 windows in view on one monitor is nice. less alt-tabbing. when I game, it's in a 1920x1080 window or smaller. 'bout the only time I maximize a window is watching a netflix movie and sitting back, or trying to make sense of any overly complex excel spreadsheet.
@gaunt moth , More $....

Thumbs up to @inner spade for the advice on using a stepped drill bit - works extremely well. Just bought one and used it on a piece of stainless steel -perfect holes, and a quick job of it. Thanks CG! Looking forward to using it on plexiglass, too.
Super! Matches my experience @eager sapphire . I use it a lot with 1/8 inch plexi with great results.
This was on some 20ga stainless. Regular carbon steel bits were fussing a good bit, and remembered your advice on them. Gotta love that itโs quick, doesnโt heat up, and leaves clean holes! Thanks again..
