how long does the show run?
It's eerily quiet when the power is out.
Better to use a Teensy than a FPGA
That's a great demo.
Question: Is the multi-text layering exclusive to the Teensy? If so, why?
1 hour 15 / 20 mins @vast blade
ROBOTS
Thank you
Robot friends
certainly I'd say it was just AND masking.

Pretty sturdy
hello little robot friend. will you transport this bowl of fritos to my human friend over there? i would appreciate it.
Looks like the dog wouldn't destroy if he pounced on it
easy wireless Arduino...what's not to love
Teach it to fetch beers
I still have an Alphabot on the shelf that I haven't worked with yet. 😦 So many things, so little time.
With the tubing, you could make a long distance beverage delivery system ala a mechanical straw
I'm planning out my Bigger Better Tankbot and... Well, it's going to be big. Probably a full foot long.
neat software
its the itsy!!!
Yeah! ItsyBitsy!

What's smaller than a Feather but larger than a Trinket? It's an Itsy Bitsy! Small, powerful, Arduino-compatible - this microcontroller board is perfect when you want something very ...
Trinket M0 > Trinket Pro
When you go after one of your own products
Trinket M0 Pro?
What .. these are out now?
Trinket M4 > Trinket M0 😉 😉 😉
10% off all items in stock code is overhaul expires 12/20/17 @ 11:59pm ET #askanengineer http://www.adafruit.com @open girder
not the itsy bitsy I expected
only 32u4 according to the new product list
itsy bitsy is like an Arduino Leonardo baby sister
I have a few Trinket Pro projects that would benefit from a hardware upgrade. Native USB rules!
"..M0/M4 chip later.."
SAM51G19 whoo
The Arduino Leonardo is still available on-and-off; I ended up buying a clone on Amazon
The native USB is sooo much better than bitbang USB
Wonder if the silicone tubing would work as a light pipe with an LED in the end?
Nice chassis on the robot.
Question: For the SmartMatrix demo, is the multi-text layering exclusive to the Teensy? Could that effect be done with a CPX/Feather M0?
It would diffuse rapidly
Woot!
code "overhaul" will get 10% off even on the new stuff if in stock
Thanks!
CPy team...GO! 😄
Question: are you ever going to make a CDMA version of the FONA?
Is there EPROM on that Itsy Bitsy??? If so, how much? Standard 1K
from twitch: How does the M bot work on carpet? And how does mounting additional components work?
ty Dan
Is that the last pay phone ON EARTH behind you? 😉
Question: what is the best way to mount batteries when making a headset?
So no 70s carpet
A raspberry pi q...do you have a board for limiting voltage/amperage coming directly from a battery going to the raspberry pi microusb port? I'm using my raspberry pi 3b in a robot and I'm having trouble powering it adequately
Another question tip: tag @ adafruit so it highlights on their discord.
@open girder Are there any plans to sell any tread/track kits for robots?
@open girder I am new with adafruit's boards, what is the difference with arduinos ?
@open girder What's on your Holiday wishlist this year?
@vast blade try a larger USB cell phone recharger type battery for portability
@open girder what is the best way to split power to a Raspberry pi and a motor from a power adapter ( for an auto cat feeder )
^along similar lines
Question: Is it feasible to make a battery level measurement tool using a current sensor and a code algoritm?
^I believe there are Arduino shields that can do that @versed mountain
I am building a curiebot and i only recieved one 8 pin stackable header. Can i use the standard headers that came with the motorshield?
Sparkfun has a good guide: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/arduino-comparison-guide
@open girder How should one be a good OSH citizen while basing stuff off adafruit designs?
Any plans for a more advance tier of Adabox
@old cairn and Adafruit has a very active and friendly community!
Referencing my question: I have the MakeBlock Track kit in front of me, seems pretty good, but it's hard to find any MakeBlock parts (Wheels, etc), it's all full, super expensive kits. It's a good thing I have a 3D printer, otherwise it'd be useless.
very cool
@inner spade Thats cool !
@vernal mulch CircuitPython doesn't work on the Arduino Uno but it does on the CircuitPlayground Express!
@vernal mulch you can't do circuitpython on an UNO, it's too weak for that
Regarding MCP 73833 lipo charger. I think that connecting load directly to VBAT is not great, because the battery will be connected to the load while charging, which, I think, will not sink the full charging current into the battery, because part of that current will flow to the load.
You should add a P-FET between the battery and the load, and have Vin turn off the gate, and add a diode from Vin to load. See Microchip's application note: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/51746a.pdf Page 5. P-FET plus diode available in a single package: FDFMA2P857. Perhaps you could consider for next revision. Thanks.
Any AdaBox 007 hints or is 007 eough???
But adavanced folks can like the AdaBox stuff too (I do!!)
@steady lava in general, you can use headers from other stuff just fine. I'd just make sure the instructions show what you have.
@vernal mulch M0 or M4 or ESP8266 boards can run Circuit Python
@open girder Is their distributors of adafruit in canada so shipping can be cheaper ?
I always think I want to get an adabox, but when I look I already have most of the parts.
Question)Lady ada mentioned in Microsoft IOT bootcamp that testing boards in large quantities is really different than testing one board. What are the steps that you take to automate this process for large quantities of boards?
Just please put the ada BOX (cardboard) in the catalog so we can have a nice box itself. /advanced_user
any news on the m4 boards, did the ICs arrive yet?
@vernal mulch I'd love to see you do a video on using circuitpython
deep mysteries of circuitry
Question)Lady ada mentioned in Microsoft IOT bootcamp that testing boards in large quantities is really different than testing one board. What are the steps that you take to automate this process for large quantities of boards?
Question: How would you make a one hand controller incorporating analog throttle and analog steering
@old cairn I've run into issue with them not having selection and stock.
Question)Lady ada mentioned in Microsoft IOT bootcamp that testing boards in large quantities is really different than testing one board. What are the steps that you take to automate this process for large quantities of boards?
Thanks guys!
@old cairn I just order direct from Adafruit and use DHL with prepaid customs.
@odd stream ok thats cool !
Don't LadyAda's have 9 lives?
OK.. no new products that I MUST have, so time to mega-order.
@ancient hinge there are some old desk of ladyadas about creating test jigs
@vernal mulch I watched the unboxing with make:code but you didn't get to circuitpython
Pogo pins are great 😃
All these free CPX boards... I need to find a couple kids that would enjoy them.
@glad mortar nope, no ICs yet
@waxen thistle I've been known to jump at a chance to use pogo pins.
Keith
If you make a Star Wars circuit board tester, would they be Porgo pins?
Oh @river peak
good radio voice Keith
@vernal mulch ok keep me posted!
Gotta take the dog out, folks have a great night. Great show LadyAda & PT
have fun on vacation!
Happy Holidays everyone!
happy holidays!
Happy Holidays !
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Great show! Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Fun evening as always!
You have a huge family, Phil
Thanks guys!
@open girder Thanks again for another wonderful evening of shows!
thanks @here !
Thank you!
Bye guys!
@open girder We'll be your family!
Thanks a lot.
@open girder great show (lots of questions answered) tonight! Happy Holidays!!!! Enjoy the "time off". 🎉
g'night! thanks for watching and participating!
Thank you!
Was just thinking, the two different pronunciations have very different connotations
Yeah once the ink was on paper my mind parsed both ways pretty much sequentially/simultaneously. Knowledge changes when it's in print and published.
/schrödinger_cat
There's always that last minute trepidation before clicking the "submit order" button on a big order.
But, boy will it be fun when it arrives!!
@odd stream Don't pull a Mr. Certainly and forget the coupon code.
I remembered it 😃
Support was super nice and fixed it for me.
Last time I forgot and remember right after getting the acknowledgement. A panicy email and they took care of it right away. Awesome folks at @open girder.
Anyway... upgrading my wire snips, PCB vice and helping hands. I had the el cheapo versions. Relacing those with PanVice stuff.
PanaVise is top diggity-notch.
@odd stream It sounds like you're getting out of hand!
@river peak I'm aiming to be doing this stuff full time again by this time next year.
"stuff" meaning generally having the soldering iron on all day.
Full time as in getting paid, too?
A few things I just ordered are for two more dotstar wing projects that build on the library I wrote.
I went all custom with my panavise....
@river peak one way or another, yes.
I need to work on stuff for my company, so that by the end of next year I might actually have made more money than I spent...
Ideally, I'd be in the same place, @odd stream
@waxen thistle That's what mine will be like, except I went all in for https://www.adafruit.com/product/2452
That's a beefy one 😃
I went with the hobby creek brass ring + low profile panavise base. That way I can swap out the heads on a per-project basis.
Beefy? I don't see any cows. And I certainly wouldn't eat it
The hobby creek ring lets me use as many or as few third hands hoses as my heart desires.
@waxen thistle I've been using one of these for a couple years: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/V90AAOSwrklVcK7O/s-l300.jpg
I will enjoy the increased degrees of freedom
where do I find the question for the prize at the end?
I had one of those cheap, stereotypical third hands units. You know, the barebones ones that make you question why you got into the hobby in the first place.
@odd stream can I link you to something I know you'll kick me for becauseit's cool
@gaunt plume do it
@waxen thistle One of these? https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/third-hand-with-4x-magnifying-glass/A-p8670937e
As Arnie would say: DO IT NOW!
also we should move this to #general-chat, no?
@waxen thistle Actually that one's nicer than the one I have. On mine the 'gators are just crimped on. Which didn't last long. So now I just burn my fingertips regularly.
@odd stream Oh yepper, that's the crazy critter.
Mine came from Harbor Freight/Horror Fright.
@odd stream great show and tell update :D!
@blazing atlas Thanks! I'm enjoying it. It's fun and motivates me to come up with new projects to make.
@blazing atlas I have several in the queue.
😄 looking forward to em!
@waxen thistle I believe both the things I mentioned came from MicroCenter. As did much of my initial gear. Much of which is being replaced over time.
@blazing atlas It motivates me to write guides as well.
its like a journal too 😃
MicroCenter is a great and terrible place
I have very unkind things to say about Microcenter. I've never been impressed with their online ordering for instore pickups. And their physical store looks like a tornado hit it, on a good day.
@river peak Most (all?) of my various arduinos came from there.
"arduinos"
Well, I guess I did get my pro-minis from Hong Kong via amazon
@waxen thistle The one near me was decent up until a while back. Only thing on the bottom shelves were things marked clearance.
Now they've re-organized all the little electronics and moved a lot of stuff. So far, it's pretty fantastic.
And I haven't had any issues ordering for instore pickup, but I also know exactly what I want.
It's amazing how much difference staff can make in a store.
To be fair, I haven't tried their stores for....about a year now. Maybe they've gotten better.
I should give them another shot.
It's entirely possible.
Bad management can cause all sorts of issues, if not dealt with. But replacing a manager with a good one can cause a huge difference
@river peak That's so true of many things.
Hi ! If you like Robots, Retrospace and Gerry Anderson Movies, i created hot stuff here : https://www.shapeways.com/shops/boopstore?section=SciFi&s=0 B/R Christophe
Here is a blog post about one of the Christmas ornaments I showed last night on the show-and-tell. http://tech.cyborg5.com/2017/12/13/3d-printed-icosahedron-star-christmas-ornament/
Here is a blog post about the Christmas card I designed and showed on show-and-tell last night. http://graphics.cyborg5.com/2017/12/16/my-2017-christmas-card-santa-adopts-new-technology/
I've had decent luck with Microcenter. Sometimes you have to do a bit of searching or ask someone for help in finding things. Most of the time the order-for-store-pickup feature works well and can save you some time, especially for things that say they have 1 or 2 in stock that might not really be there. Once they picked the wrong thing for me (a wire stripper that came in two versions for different guages).
On the subject of third/helping hands, I recently upgraded to this one from a too cheap version I got off Amazon: http://www.microcenter.com/product/467490/Soldering_Helping_Hand_with_LED_Magnifier
My partner has had to pop over the border occasionally to renew her tourist status, so I have her pick up an order at Microcenter while she’s there. Usually Pis. Got a sense hat this last time. Alas she got her temporary resident status so no more for a couple years.
The funny thing is that the cheap one came with a power supply to be able to avoid batteries, but the better one didn't although it has a jack for one. I had to do a bit of research to order one that should work. It should arrive today from Jameco.
I would love to find one of those helping-hand style panavise extensions that had bigger hands, something larger than an alligator clip. Maybe hold something about 1cm in diameter.
Maybe with replaceable hands. Name it Kryten (Red Dwarf)
Can those alligator clips be pulled off the PanaHandWorkstation, leaving something...threaded?
(Or could be threaded with a tool)
I’m sure an adapter of some sort could be made. I will likely be wanting that as well.
Couldn’t tell from the product page if those alligator clips can be removed from the ends of the arms
@eager sapphire Can you use multiple of them at once to hold what you need, or does it need to be a single larger grab point?
Regardless, they are easy to dismantle -- just a machine screw.
Needs to be a single, larger grab point. Thanks @waxen thistle
Removing the clip reveals a short metal shaft?
It's a plastic coolant tube, at least on mine
machine screw holds on the clip, friction fit
i suppose you could tap the plastic, but it'd probably degrade after one or two usages
Thanks++ @waxen thistle
Adafruit doesn't sell them, but Sparkfun sells spare coolant tubes
and alligator clip sets (linked here for reference only) https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12033
You can also find these on ebay, amazon, etc. But theirs absolutely work with the Hobby Creek addons. It's what I use.
So the cylinder at the end of the clip squeezes itself about the end of that pipe
Looks to be quite adaptable to a larger clip
1000 words right there, thanks
Those are the pre-made ones from Hobby Creek
Coolant line hoses can have a different diameter opening, so I'd grab the hoses first then figure out what size screw you'd need.
@waxen thistle You are doing nothing to suppress my impatience for this order to arrive.
Unless explictly stated in the spec sheet.
Lol
hahaha
Anticipation: the best part of Christmas?
@odd stream Have a cup of hot chocolate, does that help? 😉
I doubt it will be here for christmas... although dhl has delivered on the weekend during busy times. So there’s hope.
To everybody who asked, I replied, “just get me a gift cert at Adafruit”....
@waxen thistle Did that last night. Even the rum didn’t help.
"Instructions unclear, here's a fruit basket from Whole Foods. Is that enough 'fruit'?"
Yeah, kinda hoping they carefully typed “AdaFruit” otherwise, well. Lots of vitamin C coming.
Though if someone went to a farmer's market and got me a bunch of fresh goodies, I couldn't even be disappointed. That stuff is good and it support local growers.
@eager sapphire Good answer. Great answer. The BEST answer.
And as JP showed us, you can use a CPX and make a Fruit Salad synth kit.
@waxen thistle we have a year-round, indoor market that is essentially a farmer’s market a couple blocks away. Haven’t been to a big box grocery in months.
Throw in a twice a week outdoor farmers market in their plaza and there you go.
We get one nearby once/year.
@odd stream that sounds like the market in downtown Cleveland. I hope it is, that place is amazing 😃
Quality excellent, which just makes the rest of the year...well. Yanno.
Anyway appreciate the time and data @waxen thistle
Must rolllllll
My pleasure, roll out Optimus Prime. 😃
@waxen thistle https://www.coventmarket.com
Covent Market -- i was thinking, nah that's not the Covent Garden in London. Yup, it is.
A few years back, I was in London for a week -- stayed at the Strand Palace Hotel. Loved what Covent Garden had to offer.
Wait, is it the London one? The bottom of the page says "In the heart of London", but all the prices are in $...
I'm confused.
Not that London.
Named after that London.
We even have a Thames River running through town.
Also, not nearly as far from Cleveland.
😕 I feel like I've been punk'ed. Jolly good job, ol' sport 😛
More or less half way between Toronto and Detroit.
Also, a lot closer to NYC... so Adafruit orders are pretty quick to get here. 😃
Nice!
I was looking at the merchant layout, and a lot of the names were London-esque, but it didn't match up what my memory of Covent Garden was.
So....self-check. Am I finally losing it? Did I fall into an alternate universe?
That looks like an awesome place
@waxen thistle Yeah, it has pretty much everything we need on a day-to-day basis. I like to support indie, local vendors, etc.
Absolutely -- full agreement with that.
I mean, at the end of the day, I have to do right by me -- and if a local vendor is way out of line in pricing, I have no choice but to consider alternatives.
Local lumber yard/hardware supply store sells appliances. We're close with the owners -- they tell us they can't even buy appliances (at reseller pricing) as cheap as the big box stores sell them for directly to the consumer. Needless to say, the additional cost of several hundred dollars isn't practical.
But for as much as I can, i prefer to shop local, shop US-made, etc.
@waxen thistle Yeah... except Canadian made as much as possible here 😃 But yeah, I'll eat a bit of a cost increase to buy local, especially if the freshness/quality is a bit better. The butcher at that market is amazing 😃
check
@haughty quiver were those fluorescent tubes light sabres and refilled with other gasses?
no, not resealed, just diffused through the powder that coats the glass
Aha! Thanks. So you're grabbing the remaining finish end, not the cut end.
That is awesome.
I don't do stuff like that anymore. Yeah, swinging it around would be a very careful exercise.
If you REALLY want to go bonkers, you can pull the magnetron out of a microwave and then point it at a flourescent tube and the part of the tube it's pointing at will light up
This is, of course, a terrible idea.
A friend of mine (pilot) got the idea once to be towed by a truck or van -- launching a hang glider from level ground. He went straight up; and went straight down.

I love that thing. It's the best 404 going.
I'm gonna start the preshow now so we can check video and audio, LMK if it's all good, thanks!
Theme music and still photo in Connecticut.
Live video now.
no audio, John.
audio heard now.
"levels are good" hear and see.
your pet dog?
The "don't try this at home" show. 😛
this is from Last Jedi
The governments of the World should simply declare Wednesdays and Thursdays 'Dont Try This At Home Universal Waiver' day, for all broadcast media.
Should use the Dot Star LED's
small ledis could be nice and think the KITT effect
It needs Death Star LEDs!
Hack saw...
think if @haughty quiver 3d print the custom model from that AT-AT walker
@haughty quiver I've used multiple sound FX cards with a simple passive mixer (two or more resistors) to get polyphony.
How about EL Wire?
@hard hollow @rocky reef custom size of AT-AT model as @haughty quiver asked as no need popcorn model then
the devkit what i have magnetometer min -1000mgauss and max 1000 mgauss so i could make similar close up thing and not just door monitor
Maybe warm white would be good for the operator's station rather than red?
Huh, cool. Didn't know that bit!
what is the sound effects board?
Got here late. Modeled from popcorn bucket material?
@haughty quiver would wireless charging would be good to the at-at legs?
micro-lipo etc
Don't forget about the power to the FX boards.
Beautiful model!
what is the sound effects board?
How about Qi coils in the feet for recharging?
for the wireless charging coil would be enough for one coild per leg so 4 QI charger coils to popcorn size AT-AT model
MIDI on the wing works well.
This one, perhaps? https://www.adafruit.com/product/2342
There's a lot of MIDI on old web site hosts like geocities
@haughty quiver You'd need more than an hour for your recap.
inductive charging to AT-AT legs
Thank you @haughty quiver for the last year of fun stuff! You da man.
Thank you, @haughty quiver !
I look forward to your webcasts every week. Take care John and remember, Make a great day!
pew pew
Thank you @inner spade !
THanks @heavy siren
thank you so much @eager sapphire !
I think you can make an LED blinker with a pair of BJT's or using an R/C time constant circuit (relaxation oscillator?)
Or the venerable 555 timer chip
@heavy siren those inductive charging coils should be nice as set comes with 2 so 2 sets and @haughty quiver cover 4 legs
@shell mason That's sort of what I was thinking.
great minds think alike right?
right
Now, it's time to hit the highway to the airports and pick up the kids coming home for the holidays.
Make a great day... ><>
That’s great @heavy siren
@eager sapphire Yeah, best time of the year for us empty nesters.
Understood, fortunately for me the daughter lives minutes away - for now
Your a lucky man.
My son John works at Bungie so I'm going to get all the latest scoop on Destiny 2.
In that fashion, yes. They’re talking about moving, but at least staying in Colorado
Ok, the cars all warmed up. Gotta go. See ya later Adafruitians.
Good trip to ya, see ya @heavy siren
@haughty quiver I've just started watching your videos (which I'm really enjoying). Have you talked about your A/V setup anywhere? I'm looking to go beyond the laptop webcam. Overhead cameras, compositing/streaming software, etc.
Safe travels @heavy siren
Hi @odd stream thanks -- yes, I think I've written a bit of it up before, and I can send you more details, but quick version is: two Sony A6300 mirrorless cameras for main and overhead, and a HoverBoard downshooter. All into HDMI to USB 3 boxes from Magewell. I stream with Wirecast, switch camera layouts w a Trinket M0 button box as HID device. I edit in Premiere Pro.
Face cam is a Logitech c920
and the most important two things in all of this are lighting and mic.
a couple of LED softboxes, lots of little kickers, and loads of natural light when I shoot in the day.
either plug a lav into a digital recorder in my pocket for pre-recorded/edited content, or use a good wireless mic pac w lav for broadcast.
Lighting is severly lacking in my workshop at the moment: mostly just desk lamps. One downside of putting a workshop in a room designed to be a bedroom.
Natural light I have (big east facing window so sunny mornings are glorious)
I shove a AA-cell flashlight with a Cree LED under my ball cap so it acts like a headlamp, then shoot that off a white wall to provide indirect lighting from nearer-to-horizontal, for a quick indoor photo.
John has to be on-camera along with the technology so he can't be lookin' like a coal miner throughout the show. 😉
@haughty quiver Thanks!
@haughty quiver Here's a really simple passive mixer. Assuming that the output signals are decoupled, the R values determine the relative mix and should be around 1/10th the input impedance of the follow-on amp. If the amp impedance is >100k ohms, then you may want to place a 100k resistor to ground at the input. There will be some volume loss, of course.
@haughty quiver Here's the one I used in a keyboard and SFX mixer project. There was some interaction between the controls, but that's just in the nature of a passive mixer.
Attenuating patch cables sometimes are arranged as an H-pad.
The keyboard/SFX mixer project. It was used for live performances, BTW.
http://www.nu9n.com/images/t-pad.jpg
from:
http://www.nu9n.com/tpad-calculator.html
His application there is 600 ohm impedance mic input attenuation. R2 determines how much attenuation (when R2 is close to zero ohms, attenuation is very high).
@haughty quiver Here's a project where I hard-wired the Feather Music Maker wing into a portable MIDI voice module. Battery-powered for keyboard emergencies. Uses an old-style DIN 5-pin current-loop I/O. Musical quality is okay, good enough for most performance venues outside of the studio. I'm interested in seeing/hearing what you design!

Discussion on merits of different audio mixers wrt crosstalk.
We did some stuff over the telephone (c. 1977?) with similar ideas, using University of Wisconsin (extension) tech documents as a starting poing.
@fallow fractal Good to consider those factors, particularly in the studio.
Live performance is much more forgiving, at least at the level of my band's performances. 😉
I found a off-the-shelf Calectro audio xformer with about a 1500 ohm impedance was sufficient to hold the phone line open and we sent audio like that. Wasn't terrible. Was an early attempt at DIY teleconferencing. 😉
<< not an engineer
A small amount of distortion is 'warmth' I think.
Interesting that 1500 ohms would hold. Wasn't the nominal line impedance around 500 ohms back then?
I have a friend who swears by the 60's vintage transformers and bipolar preamps in his studio for everything from jazz to country.
Well you needed a minimum amount of resistance to hold the line open; was a fairly narrow range of values used. I imagine the 48 VDC on the line was a determining factor, as I believe at that time you were operating a loop.
The transformer gadget inside a standard telephone from 1968 was I think several cleverly wound coils and was called the 'network' iirc.
One of the main things they wanted was called 'sidetone' which is your own voice in your ear as you spoke. Not enough sidetone and the calling party would get nervous that the line had gone dead.
I sat in the lobby of the phone company for probably 90 minutes reading their "Tarriffs" .. I don't think they were published anywhere, so that was the one method allowed to get to know them. It was kind of a bold move because in doing so I identified more-than-consumer interest in the matter.
I just told them I was a ham operator and that we do phone patches for overseas servicemen to talk to their families.
In those days you were not allowed to directly connect anything (at all) to their system. Nothing.
Where is there a good tutorial on making a cryptocurrency miner rig. I'd like to take a look at the wireframes of one that already exists, to see if I can modify it to use my reverse ellipse dehashing function. I'd never used it before and I was just reading a book on bitcoin and come to find out they use a similar hashing function
I recall how limited and protected the phone system was back then. Now it's just not interesting except to robo-callers.
My main application is ringer-volume control and scheduling. 😉
@sweet kernel Have you looked at Collin's guide? https://learn.adafruit.com/piminer-raspberry-pi-bitcoin-miner/install-cgminer?view=all
Don't work already tried that
probably used to work but not anymore
I want the schematic to the little box with the B on it. Not how to set up a mining right. I don't want to buy the miner I want to build the miner
I tried to set that up in the picture and couldn't get a miner running on the raspberry pi. None of them worked and I tried a few different ones and I found errors that all say wrong acritecture
I have a rockminer that I took apart. I'm going to hook it up to a solar array and turn sunlight into moneyh
well solar array will charge my powerwall whenever Telsa gets here to install it
Did you see what I said about dselect? #general-tech
dude don't link to other topics in the chat if people wanted to post in another topic I'm sure they know where it is
here go post #inthealley and maybe there will be better luck there
@inner spade that's a sweet little sound module!
do you have a build log posted anywhere?
I always get chewed out when something simple doesn't work in the code. Yet raspberry pi ships stuff off to millions of people before they find out it doesn't work. Maybe I should sell some software to a few million people than I can see if it works
I mean see if I can sell it before I even figure out if its possible to produce
🤷
@haughty quiver Nope, no build log (yet?). Just hard-wired the wing to default to MIDI mode, attached a current-loop interface (on a wing proto board), output amp, and a PowerBoost 500C hacked to charge at 100mA.
Clean!
I just started messing with the Featherwing's MIDI -- have yout tried to use it to read MIDI notes and CCs, or only play it? I can't find an obvious way in our library.
I don't use the library, just send it MIDI from the keyboard/controller via the RX/TX pins on the wing. No microcontroller needed.
Ah, I see. Awesome.
Haven't played with microcontroller generated MIDI yet.
Just watched the stream. Awesome stuff!
Well wouldn't it be simpler to compose a MIDI file and send the file to the musicmaker featherwing? Like, a canned MIDI composition created in a proper MIDI authoring program, or (llike above) played live at a keyboard, and recorded to silicon media (mass storage) as a MIDI file.
The funky chip itself does the decoding. http://www.vlsi.fi/fileadmin/datasheets/vs1053.pdf
This project has a lot of overlaps with my interest (music, painting miniatures, electronics, audio, start wars) so I'll be eagerly watching. I'm fighing a cold today so my brain isn't so helpful at the moment
Rest and fluids. Time. Eat if you want to. 😉
Will do. I'm not dying or anything, just too ... slow?. 😴

@runic acorn Same here.
Spare time? Whazzat?
try the NES10 chip fix, you snip one of the leads. worked for aused one i found
@hard hollow where do you get stuff like the aluminum extrusions that you don't 3d print yourselves?

Oooh, light! A bright idea
cue rim shot
ohh very nice synth
That synth sounds rad
Collin have nice stuff
Nice hinged chassis Collin
That is a large thermometer.
I think it can be done larger. People have played tetris on the side of skyscrapers, why not a thermometer?
@river peak That would be fun to project a thermometer animation on a building
Use the Force.
Amusingly the building would be tall enough that the temperature at the bottom would be different than the top
Audio very good Adam.
@glossy glacier Your SEMs were pretty chill!
unheated and uncooled workshops can be ummm bad
Ooooh, this is COOL
very cool
I love these SEM segments

yay @marsh tusk
Kali, I finally got it set up as well. Of course, this is only my third week watching...
Hello
At the time Radio City was built, ether was what radio waves went through, not a cryptocurrency
Before television, radio was the thing. Lots of radio programs were broadcast from NYC studios.
The ether used to be a big deal
I've a issue on my code and device.
Thanks @rapid hornet
Code assistance can be found in the Adafruit forums https://forums.adafruit.com/

Show and Tell every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET! To join, leave a comment on the Show and Tell announcement on Adafruit's G+ page, then you’ll be invited each week to share your project!
Tnx George, I wondered how people get included in the Show and Tell!
MAgic.
Now I has questions to Adam
YES NRF52
@turbid elbow Yeah?
I love first project stories.
I asked this in the youtube chat, but I was wondering if the Flora would be good for a front and back turn signal on my ebike (in a case rather than worn, with neopixels jewels in a reflector housing).
Would you be able to take pictures at molecular level with your microscope?
I was inspired by the turn signal backpack
Phil: Profesonal Jurnalator
Example code is important in getting people started, they can focus on the project and not stumble on the code
You're spot on Phil, that is what makes Adafruit so special!
@turbid elbow Not with this microscope, but with the Scaning Tunneling Microscope...
Cool
@lapis depot flora or circuit playground express probably
Is the Bluefruit module ever coming back?
I remember those days... data sheets were pretty much all there was... ocassionally you'd find someone helpfull in a netnews group
@open girder the tao of electronics
I had the luck to find a couple mentors when I was getting started.
@round junco questions will be answered later in the show. maybe 30 minutes or so
Pre-Internet it was much worse than that... there were no forums...
Ok
Mentors are better than mentos
(I'd answer if I knew)
I do research on how youth react to maker projects, and as part of that we are super curious how interests develop and how existing interests support these new interests.
dont dump your mentor into a liter of coke
Ha I was 9 in '67 with a Radio Shack 30 - in - one.
shout out to @clear matrix
Pre-internet forums; Gathering in a place to talk as group
@arctic rock There was netnews
then telnet
shout out to @sacred isle
I love seeing @sacred isle on SHow & Tell!
I remember those Radio Shack kits with springs to hold the wires....I spent a lot of time in the electoronics and ham radio shack in summer camp in the early 70's.
In the beginning there was the public library. I'd leave a note with my name and number in electronic books.
Ham Radio!
I still have some of those spring terminals in my parts box
And oh ya... HARDCOPY datasheets and databooks.
Yes springs. My frist working project was a one trans radio Amazing to get a signal.. I was hooked
Parts books and catalogs
Thank you @sacred isle for the awesome guide!!!
what would be the oldest computer we could run circuitpython on bare metal?
Yep....pre internet that how you got to talk to people overseas! Actually, a family in my hometown became friends with King Hussain of Jordan over the ham radio...interesting story
wow
Apple IIe has 64k ram
People at Apple don't admit they work at Apple during parties.
The best you will get is that "they work at the Fruit Company."
@rapid hornet You could get a 128K ram card that used paging.
Isn't the Fruit Company Adafruit?
That would be my response
That's the good Fruit company.
@odd stream 😃 I'm gonna email the erecycling folks and see what they've got
I spent 7 years at Apple...
OMG the removal made me so mad
Don't hold your breath

@arctic rock I igree
I have to read that again...about the removal...personally it wouldn't suprise me if in 20 years or so LadyAda is at the White House getting a "Presidential Medal of Freedom" like Grace Hopper!
*agree
I have a question:
I just inherited a Raspberry Pi 2 that I want to use for a smart home project. Fortunately, I have a degree in EE and have a little experience with Linux. I thought Raspberry Pi and Arduino would be equivalent entry points into electronics and coding. I did not realize how much more of a learning curve there would be. It was a little disappointing how hard it was to find startup guides, and the one on your site didn't seem up to date. I didn't know if it mattered as I went through my startup.
Now that I have it up and running and headless, what is the best way for me to learn Python. Like I said, I have a lot more Arduino and other C experience. Is there an equivalent to a self guided guide like "blink" et al for Python and Raspberry Pi?
My Aunt heard I was into Raspberry Pi, so she made me a Raspberry Pie for the holidays... Was delicious, but not as good as a camera module.
haha! I just used that network guide!!!
I win!
Great Scott!
LOL.... 😃
@arctic rock LOL
@rapid hornet
!!
Question:
I'd like to control an Arduino from C# but I do not want to deal with the potentially changing virtual COM port. Is there another way for a C# app to communicate with an Arduino Sketch? Thank you!
@buoyant scroll Depends on which Arduino board, but without extra hardware, generally not. Could do WiFi
I love pick and place machines...
@buoyant scroll could you just auto detect the COM port?
Gotta love the fisheye time laspe!
Think you can iterate ports and query Ident strings
Most people run C/C++ Arduino code on their Arduino - the IDE to make the code is free on arduino.org
You can use Firmata to talk to the Arduino.
@spring heath Wow! Look at all those options! THANK YOU!
@rapid hornet & @eager sapphire I will look into that too. Thanks everyone!
Even with a $3 serial BT module if it needs to be untethered
Ray Charles - “Hit The Road, Jack”
Yes awesome video catch. But no politics right ha ha
It’s cool having changes on time-lapse
The MQTT video was good, it's a complex topic
@open girder video is a bit quiet
We have a reflective glass building directly east of our balcony. We get sunrise & sunset on our balcony.
I can hear celophane being crinkled
Can the Flora save data from it's add-ons like the Accelerometer to a SD or usb?
Yes I heard that too. Potato chips?
I agree @spring heath, it's a very good treatment of the topic.
It is rather quiet
I've been usign MQTT for over a year, and I picked up a couple new things from that video.
The evil nutcracker?
Knolling
Good Bye Adafruit. Been fun while it lasted.

Even the nicest cat will bite you if you pet it one too many times.

Anyone know if there is a good community for wearable projects?

@open girder
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockefeller_Center
The original center itself is divided into several sections: Radio City, for RCA's radio-related enterprises such as the Music Hall and 30 Rockefeller Plaza..
whoa i'd love to see a wall of those, each one like a pixel - someone make that! 😃
That is cool
@lethal lagoon If I had the money...
What its 3G
Wait. This thing has LTE? Do want!
It'd be great for an IoT gateway
hmm, no usb connector on that fipy
@devout knoll https://www.adafruit.com/product/3613
impressive new products this week
but how does LTE connect? You'd have to have a wireless account (or can you just connect it to you cell account?)
I wonder how you program it
outch. 75
@tropic oxide I agree
75 Bucks..........?
I need to do some thinking about that blackout glass.
yes
@devout blade Depending on your phone's carrier, you can pull out your own sim card and use that
be cool to have a dome made out of blackout glass that would have different patterns around an LED sculpture
🙃
Q: Will the Metro M4 Express have thru-hole or SMT R3 headers?
Did I miss the Top Secret segment?
Is the Bluefruit EZ Key module ever coming back?
2G is dead
Question: who wrote and performed the music that opens ASK AN ENGINEER?
If you want embedded LTE, Arduino just released the MKR GSM 1400. https://store.arduino.cc/usa/mkr-gsm-1400
Not really a question but you linked the only non-postapocalyptic Mad Max on your listing for the air quality sensor
@whole junco...ah OK...at $75 I agree with the others I'd have to have a particular use-case for it.
Question: how can I remove the spring from one axis of a joystick so it moves freely?
Thanks
Q: how would you connect the pms sensor to a 3.3v microcontroller?
Is there an estimate as to when the jobs board is coming back?
Q: What is the best operating system
Which board design was the simplest to design......? You know which board took the least time to design.........?
correction 2G is dying not dead. It's not totally. It's still great for personal projects that use low data and won't be around for more than a couple years
@open girder Are there plans for a single-axis joystick for the store?
ah cool so its teh fan inside
Q: Why is Emacs the best text editor?
A potentiometer can be used as a single axis joystick
@fallen rivet enough trolling
@fallen rivet Eight Megs And Constantly Swapping?
lol
Vi =visually impaired heh heh
🙄
Good prize
too bad my kids took my phone so I can't call.
awww I've already won
@fallen rivet or is that Extra-Meta-Alt-Ctrl-Shift?
@river peak Which axis? Temporal?
Casey Neistat says gear doesnt matter - it's what you make that matters
@inner spade I would love a spring on the temporal axis on anything
Slide potentiometers are legitimately not at all what I'm looking for.
@inner spade except for food
Temporal changes could disrupt our New Years timing
call now!
darn kids
Call
Is this international giveaway......?
I did store it in my contacts. Got me an autographed make
Could I harrass one into working? Sure. But a single-axis rotation joystick like what's in a RC controller are what I'm looking for
International you'd need to add the ! for US and any international access code
! = 1
Noone follows tradition anymore -- you're supposed to hang up when the call gets picked-up.
@river peak so like a thing you can twist?
Greetings from Mazatlan, Mexico!!!
Do they ship internationally....?
Blue box? Is it bigger on the inside?
A push-pull “single-axis” joystick? There are ones similar to this that use 2 buttons under it
How about a pot or rotary encoder turned on its side?
Hola
@whole junco Not tist, that'd be more of a single pot.
LOL @opal wolf
@river peak analog?
Thanks and good night.
Goodbye and thank you
Happy New Year
Thanks everyone! It was fun tonight!
I thought you wanted a twist with a spring return
@paper peak Analog/Digital doesn't matter.
thanks for a great stream! happy new year!
Yes Happy New Year to all!\
what are you wanting to do? or copy
@river peak i mean, just on/off or multivalue?
Happy New Year
Be good to one another
Happy MMXVIII
Thank youu and a Happy and Healthy New Year!!
Happy New Year all! May it be awesome for everyon!

Largely, size is my concern. I could use a single rotary potentiometer but those are usually huge.

Still a few days left to 2017
@river peak They make small ones. I would love to help if you can describe some more details about the application.
To me, that means time to take down Christmas decor
My fourth question about the headers on the upcoming MetroM4Express unanswered. Shouldn't be a secret.
And rid of old grudges for next year
Does adafruit ship giveaways internationally.....?
ty @clear matrix
😬
@whole junco I'm looking to make a small controller for my tankbot. I want single-axis joysticks for each tread.
@devout knoll Yeah, they do DHL international
why not put up Christmas decor
I don't know why not, @devout knoll
fairy lights are very in right now
@devout knoll I'm stumped i dont know
@frail flame @fallen rivet @opal wolf Thanks
@river peak I see what you're getting at. A slider doesn't quite rotate from the middle like a joystick does. Lemme do some diggin on Digikey
@devout knoll See https://www.adafruit.com/shippinginfo
Pot or rotary encoder flipped onto its side.
Need a basic one way thumb “joystick”
@turbid elbow EXACTLY
@whole junco Put a pot on its side and add a stick to the knob part? Just an idea
build up the shaft with a 3DP part or clay or whatever into the shape of your choice.
not a bad idea! way to be creative!
lol
@frail flame That's likely what I'll end up doing, but something purpose-designed tends to be smaller
Some of the switch manufacturers like E-Switch or Omron or C&K may have something.
woooooo! Those one axis joysticks get expensive quick!
https://www.digikey.com/short/qqdvhm
Hah, no kidding
@river peak Is it ok if it doesn't have a spring return? I assume that would be better
Those are probably quite large though, looking at the pictures.
@whole junco That'd be workable
fun show tonight! i'm going to go catch up on show and tell, happy holidays everyone!
@river peak I've bought used and surplus hall effect joysticks on eBay. These are often for industrial machinery (e.g driving forklifts, cranes, etc.). Very sturdy. Basically $25 and up.
you can also use a two-axis joystick with a restrictor to restrict movement to one axis
ok. here's my best recommendation. since single axis joysticks aren't as needed in the world, they're more expensive. I say buy a 2 axis joy stick that fits your application and only wire up one of the sets of contacts.
https://www.adafruit.com/?q=joystick
https://www.digikey.com/short/qqdv9q
@river peak also available in the arcade world, e.g. https://www.ultimarc.com/ultrastik_info.html (and see other products on that site).
Hope you like drinking from fire hoses! Ask and ye shall receive!
Oh man. Cool things (And maybe useful on future projects) but totally not what I was envisioning.
Here's something more like what I was thinking: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/VK-20PCS-LOT-The-CTS-import-253A103B60NB-sector-rocker-10K-potentiometer-switch-universal-switch-lever/32702125839.html
@river peak There are (currently) seven RPis on the rover: Master controller and onboard MQTT broker; drive and power systems management (sharing navigation responsibility); Science data collection; and four hazard avoidance cameras (HazCams) working with the LIDAR system to identify and avoid hazards. It's likely that I'll need number eight to control active science collection, depending on the sophistication. Some of the team members brought up the point that the rover should have a "mission" other than just driving around collecting atmospheric data, so we're investigating both biological and geological in situ experiments. I'm leaning towards geological because the power and weight requirements will be lower. It's also likely I'll need number nine to control the SunSeeker AI, which will seek to navigate to maximize UV exposure (thus, maximize sunlight for recharging batteries).
nice new products the smaller shutter glass sounds like custom active 3D glasses

Adam you have your video and audio solved .. very easy to follow what you're saying.
@rapid hornet I restarted the terminal
hmm, weird. could be a bug on our end
I think he's wondering about the Ideal Gas Law, PV=nRT
maybe, I saw that when I exited the program, I can't type anything or do anything within the window
let me know if it happens again
@split gazelle Do I spot a cat?
@rapid hornet i've had it happen too every once & a while
@river peak which multimeter is that?
This guy has amazing analog synths built.
@river peak you do she jumped up 😃
ok, maybe we should start an issue and try to reproduce i t
@fallow fractal Google hangouts does a lot of atomatic procesing that I cand do with wirecast without buying pro
@waxen thistle One I picked up at Amazon, I think. Let me check
I think the virtual mixer i am going to setup should help though
Seeing your face when you speak helps a lot because of your rate of speech.
@split gazelle what OS and version were you using when you had the CPy hang?
yeah, i know i am a bit fast...
@waxen thistle Aha, here it is: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KHP6EIK
It's fine but visual cues help at that rate.;)
@paper peak windows 10 & i believe it was 2.1
@split gazelle tnx - i've had more reports on MacOS, but that's very helpful that it's not confined to that.
@river peak Ahhhh, etekcity 😃 I have more than one of their toys
It's a pretty decent one. Works well for me.
i'm really looking forward to the m4 midi possibilities
we have an issue for it 😃

Here's a question: do you guys profit from boards sold on amazon as much as boards bought directly on your site? I usually get adafruit shields from amazon just because of the cheaper shipping
@vast blade nope, resellers get a discount from adafruit
@vast blade our resellers purchase them, then sell'em all good, purchase wherever!
Ok thank you!
U should carry the PICAXE Chip kit
@rapid hornet nothing so far, and I am spamming the serial line with ptichbend and aftertouch messages which can really thrash a slow serial buffer
Awesome, shipping directly from adafruit.com is extremly expensive
'cause UPS is steep when buying one or two items
@void widget awesome! keep it in mind as you are playing around with it
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
I'm not stuck in this country with you, you're stuck in this country with me. And I have python.
It's still one of the best nations on earth, we have true freedom to create and build to better the world
@vernal mulch flashlights
@rapid hornet it is when i start gettingthe knobs and oled into the mix I will need to see how quick I can still keep things
@waxen thistle game changer
Does that make shipping to the UK cheaper?
@waxen thistle 1M points for the Watchmen ref!!!
@rapid hornet Can u mention adding the 555 timer and the PICAXE chip to whoever adds new products?
sweet! you'll likely hit memory issues too. we can do a custom board build with some libs built in
@rapid hornet Meditate here! https://bit.ly/MeditateWithRain
are incompleted projects encouraged on show and tell?
@muted mesa I'm getting into comics -- "The Wednesday Club" on GeekAndSundry's twitch channel helps a lot
thx!
You ship to Iraq too...
@rapid hornet The oven project is alive again?!? Yay!
yeah, I was hoping to get the pcb ordered but there is some routing left to do
I wanted to add a couple other things too
