Now whose got the best ?
Robots are like people....unique, not perfect, but each is wonderful in their own way.
and yummy
i, for one, welcome our robot overlords
I wonder if you could cast a compliant robot out of dissolved gummi bears
Especially if they have massaging fingers
"Along with the secrets of gummi berry juice..."
3d print the mold
Everyone start with Blinky Circuit but end with..............
ooh, you can embed blinking leds in gummi bears

I would not likely do that
now with lithium flavor
You know what this thing needs? Googly eyes.

@blazing atlas Have you seen how starfish actually move?
Nope
@river peak yes! but also need to timelapse it xD

wow that is so awesome!
They have them here in Seattle too. At least at Microsoft....
No workbench???
i see no soldering iron
@analog acorn yes, we have one at my workplace too
Yeah
That's wonderful.
I'm glad to see this finalized, it's a really nice idea
Rigol missing...
but definitely not that nice
π That is awesome @open girder. Very considerate and thoughtful.
adafruit. leading by example
maybe they're waiting on the "use lead-free solder only" signs?

Well i have to say I am not so sure about a group called "skynet"
totally dig the Cyborg glasses...
We couldn't work out the scheduling, but a nearby 4H group and i tried to get an e-textiles class going a year or so ago.
@open girder patron
patreon
patreon is the company, the people who donate are patrons
my periscope heart finger is getting tired
.
funny that they are talking about 4H, I've just been asked to help they do a Clover College with light up shoes similar to the Firewalkers
@willow pollen Mine too.... Almost at 7500 hearts myself
@celest shard that would be awesome
I've been on line watching her for like 3 hours trying to get something to work...
yeah lady ada is awesome...haters are going to hate its part of the internet now.
@open girder this is really important, thank you for talking about this!
n0 yime toi type
for those who haven't read bunnie's blog post about this issue regarding naomi/make, it's fantastic and through https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=5046
That cover is awesome
I would buy all of these magazines.
man, I could totally see a cover with Naomi and a blade-runner-esque neon in the background
34 projects inside each issue sounds like a dream
and for 4H my daughter built and programmed a rocket launcher
and she has a corgy (for the dog lovers out there)
thats cool
Becky is on the cover of HackSpace https://hsmag.cc/
if people see themselves reflected in Make: etc, maybe they'll realize they can do it too
maybe HackSpace will fill in the gap of covers that Make wont do
@lethal lagoon yup!
Adafruit is a community factory that makes hardware. (edited happily for PT) π
Adafruit is much more than a hardware provider.
community factory π
I would say they are an open source education system that also provides hardware as part of there services.
@open girder is definitely a community factory
I love the boomy's see-thru backplate.
I really need to get digital capture online...
Drinkbot is just a Peltier module... Just flip it and it heats...
@harsh bone Simpler: Reverse the voltage
Didn't know that...
@harsh bone Peltier modules are super simple and awesome
Peltier modules are cool (and hot)

Nice!
this is a great video
A thousand packages a day. Sheesh
@rapid hornet It is! It's so fantastic!
Did anyone get to catch the Supreme Leader (Which he is not) in NYC Streets ?
the music in the background is so upbeat!
that's nearly a million $ a week turnover! nice
This is awesome, @open girder!
my 3d printer is called Lovelace
One of mine is Lulzboat
you have to remember that with that amount per week probably 90% of it is overhead and costs of running the company.
of course
not directly relevant but... my 3d printer is called Lovecraft
but it's still a great achievment
@steady fox we do not spend 90% on overhead π
π
mothers rooms aren't free
cool company with cool values and employees that want to be here isn't free either, however, it's all worth it
ya get whatcha pay for
I love that quote, "its never too late to quit something that sucks"
and it's all based on respect
I'm learning the (very) hard way... Electronics company is not easy, not cheap, but MAN is it satisfying.
if we're good to each other, our products are better, and that means all of us get a pretty good deal π
@rapid hornet I heard it yesterday when I watched it, completely loved it too!
I quit something that sucked a little bit late, but that was out of sheer stubbornness
super inspiring
I did college for a while. It sucked. I quit.
I love the Hak5 "Trust your Technolust" sign on the wall
Now I need to do the same for my job, but man, finding a replacement job isn't easy. Especially given the above.
Veyr good stuff...
good luck @river peak !
@fallen vortex it's from the movie Hackers!
This is running pretty late
how many hearts now pt?
the heart counter does not seem to update, i think it might be a trick
but we'll see
lol
@gaunt plume ahhh... Thanks!.. I have to watch that again.. It's been so long
"It's never too late to quit something that sucks."
I need to put that up on the wall at work, accidentially. π I think I might get in a wee bit a trouble.
The hearts are a lie
maybe we need an opensource servo based periscope tapper
@willow pollen and then it gets expanded and you have a periscope-heart-robot farm
@waxen thistle hah!
@open girder I'm over 14K Hearts β€
"The cloud is just someone else's computer." THANK YOU for saying that. Most folks typically don't realize that!
"But wait, there's no 'S' in IoT..." -exactly.
@open girder Love it
I chuckle when I see IoT deadbolts. Maybe they're secure. You know what I trust? A well-trained dog. And a key.
you trained your dog to use a key? nice
@waxen thistle I'm trying to find these IOT/BT Sec. warning flyers I saw on twitter the other day lol
That's impressive!
Hi
hi @void hollow
Yeah, Fido is PGP certified. Even got a little certificate for him π
@waxen thistle The new Amazon thing is just ASKING for trouble.
catford is not as nice as it sounds
@river peak I think the bot didn't like you...
Hmm? I don't see any issues my end.
You can also get a free issue
You posted a link then it disappered...
hi
Nope, no link from me.
ah ok, it glitched out on me then. yay tech!
Why is it going so late?
I spy a flora
@round willow The NYC thing they showed made it a bit late
@round willow They showed a tour of the factory, they're ending at 9:30
sophie took 30 minutes to get her mic working - so we ran behind

Adafruit MiniBoost 5V @ 100mA Charge Pump - AP3602A https://www.adafruit.com/product/3661
Wouldn't the screen & sensors of the device actually increase the power draw? Or would it be a trivial amount?
@waxen thistle It's probably accounting for that in software, not 100%
Adafruit BME680 - Temperature, Humidity, Pressure and Gas Sensor https://www.adafruit.com/product/3660
@waxen thistle It does. Product page says it pulls about 20mA
grabby hands
weinstein?
@river peak Thank you. I should read the specs before opening my mouth haha
I appreciate it
I'm not sure if it takes that into account, though
This will look really cool under the SEM...
awesome sensor

I could be wrong - but i imagine everything looks cool under an SEM
all-in-one π
@glossy glacier I feel like you say that to EVERYTHING
(fyi - i'm not wrong)
Can you put coins in a SEM?
@glossy glacier mentos. shell.
I could see @sterile mulch doing a climbing-bracelet with this sensor...
I actually had a similar sensor under my old SEM a while ago...
Hey, I'm awesome!....
i thougt you needed to coat stuff in gold to get them to show up in an sem
The circle bit is the mox part.
Donβt listen to gold salesmen.
@glossy glacier I'm curious as to how optical things look under a SEM, since it's not an optical microscope.
lol
@glossy glacier can you put coins in the SEM? Zoom onto George Washington's eye on a quarter?
Wonder how you would calibrate the MOX sensor... Lik eusing it on my boat for CO... Would need a "known" level of CO?
Coins are so smoth that they dont really have any details that are that small.
Free
@pearl shoal here's an old twitter thread in which I gave some LA visit suggestions: https://twitter.com/tweedandtales/status/552927604731551744
@johnedgarpark I'm creating a California list for my road-trip next year-ish. Any suggestions? https://t.co/h4XB5jM8dy
ahhh makes sense @glossy glacier
coin detail too big lol
I should be able to make pure CO somehow π
haha, another hang up
Those first two questions are a KILLER
You only need to coat stuff in gold that is not conductive. You can also use things like carbon when you need something with a lower atomic number to do x ray analysis.
waves hand This isn't the engineer you're looking for....
get him to pop to the factoiry and save on postage
@river peak You just see the surface of things, so if you were to look at a lense, you would just see the surface of it.
give away another
Yeah, it'd be interesting to "see" the things you normally don't see
Is anyone else here going to the HackADay Superconference?
Thanks for a great show as always!
Go team!
@pearl portal Thanks for another awesome evening of shows!
@glossy glacier I hope I can...no more tickets right now. I'm just down in Temecula so not too far away.
Hey, I missed the code π
Another fun one in the books - thanks folks

Hello π
Finally caught one of these live and now I know about the discord. Hello everyone!
hi
Will be visiting the fruit in NYC soon π
Hey
welcome!
thank you everyone!
hi @mild kelp !
Well that was fun.
Thank YOU @open girder
@willow pollen oh wait i see you misspelled my name in a dig haha another dork moment for me tonight
she must have been facetiming with her friends on my computer
Is there a Gas sensor guide that compares/contrasts all the air quality sensors that adafruit sells? I feel very overwhelmed.
No, I don't think there is a good up to date air quality sensor guide around but I could be wrong
I'm really churning on environmental sensores.. Bosch keeps cramming more & more into a single unit solution.
@waxen thistle @odd stream can be your guide
Inflated hopes.
polluted air? π
I'm curious about comparisons of the CCS811 and the BME680
Itβs time to change all your passwords, @lethal lagoon. That cat has too much power
@lethal lagoon Do it to avoid any cat-acylsms!
or cat-astopropies
The BME680 will replace 3 sensors in my current design (temp/rh, pressure, gas). The BME280 would have replaced 2 with 1.
@waxen thistle I'm definitely going to be looking tat the BME680 as an all in one solution.
@river peak she's got a sassy cat-titude
A slight paw-s even
@river peak she's not great with the keyboard but she's definitely into the mouse
The price goes up with each new sensor, but it's on one part compared to several, so net win. Also simpler board layout.
@odd stream at the moment, i don't have any specific needs, but I'd be looking for a decent temp/humidity sensor. Having it analyze air quality is a nice bonus, especially when doing soldering/3d printing, etc
The out-of-box compatibility with CircuitPython is nice too
@waxen thistle "Please leave the area, you don't want to inhale this"
you should buy her a cuircat python
@river peak You know, pretty much exactly that!
if you could have seen her face. the third time my mic didn't work, she looked at me like "what is wrong with you" i swear
somehow she knows...
She planned it
yup
haha. yeah, totally could've been "I told you I'd get even"...
exactly. "your mic driver has abended and the litter tray needs emptying."
"now fetch me some tuna"
of course, I view cats the same way that "your cat really wants to eat you" article does.
right. 2:44am. time to recharge.
@muted mesa i think it's a pretty fair assumption
cats are roommates, not pets π
well maybe both
"Our" cat just sort of adopted us. Showed up on the porch one day demanding food.
More accurately, stealing the food of the other outdoor cat we had at the time.
@river peak and you obeyed, good human!
Of course. How could we not?
silly human, thinks it understands how this works.
it's funny when people come over, they don't even realize MIDI is herding them around, her powers work on everyone
fun chat tonight, thanks for hanging out y'all π nite!
Thanks bunnie!!
@waxen thistle If you just need temp/humidity, the Si7021 is great. I've used it in a couple projects, Also, I just skimmed over the BME680 datasheet and it looks solid. I'm looking forward to playing with it for potential use in my smarthome sensor node v2.
@odd stream yeah, I was going to use the Si7021 but I'm struggling to source the filter version.
Aside from the breakout board, of course.
ok! posted up the details for the hackaday supercon going on - https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/11/11/the-hackaday-supercon-is-this-weekend-supercon-hackaday-hackadayio/

Is this the room for ask an engineer?
@errant void Yep!
I can't join tonight. I found a way of getting Ubuntu onto my PC. And I'll be busy doing that. I'll be sure to catch the next one, though.
@remote delta Considering how many issues you've been having, that's awesome!
I brainfarted and forgot my tablet was a thing. So I guess I can still catch it.
Also, thanks
Once you get it up and running, it'll definitely be Show-and-Tell worthy
My soon-to-be Ubuntu machine?

Oh, ok.

Hello!
@rapid hornet Yay Hacktober!
I love that I've been watching Show and Tell long enough that I recognize a decent number of the people.
I also love that there's consistently new faces.

Good job all
@sacred isle, I like the chyron on you screen too. (The on-screen text, I think that's what you call it)
it is called a layover
@sacred isle The magnets and board are a great idea!
do you have two webcams?
@glossy glacier The only live show and tell on the internet with a working SEM. Wow.
IKR it's so cool!
I have done it before @sacred isle , you can just swap the cameras in the hangouts setting

Oooh! @odd stream was talking about this the other day. Cabinet lightning, correct?
For his bookshelves! Yeah!
It's really cool that it's working.
I say, good show
Great job, everyone!
yes it was. thanks all for showing and telling!
Enjoyed the Show and Tell this week. Another great job.
Ok, so windows update decided that this was a greate time to start installing stuff, and my laptop froze for about half of show and tell...
Sorry... weirdness with my wireless headset.
YAY! π
Back to the wires next time.
I am kinda surprised that I actualy made it on.
Good idea Dave.
Extremely frustrating experience @glossy glacier , my sympathies
Mine has done this mid-streaming, just restarted and installed stuff.
Yes, @river peak is right: light turns on when you get close. The general idea is good for undercounter lighting, a localized light on a bookcase, artwork, etc.
@glossy glacier When you look at the physical microcode, are you looking for a fuse/no-fuse for on/off of the bits?

Anyways, I am going to post some photos during ask an engineer from the SEM.
Neopixels are great for that sort of thing... very bright.
@heavy siren I belive that was the case. The person who did the SEM was not there, so I didnt get to ask.
I designed a PCB and should have them for S&T in a couple weeks.

adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
@odd stream Where'd you get your PCBs from?
Love the SEM stuff lookign at chips!
The stream is unavailabe for me.
@river peak So far from Aisler (via Fritzing).
youtube stopped supporting win2k? ;D
@river peak But I'm loking for something more local (i.e. faster/cheaper shipping)
What is the youtube enoder that they use?
@odd stream for small prototype runs, I use PCBWay
They're in China, but... Well, they're super fast
I can order on Monday and have them in hand by Friday
@sacred isle Wirecast
oh
I'm trying to wath it on my tablet.
OBS works to, there are some very specific wirecast things that make it perfect for Ask an Engineer.
I have been using OBS and it seems to work pretty well
I have also been using restream.io to stream on twitch and youtube at the same time
I use OBS, but I am going to move to wirecast.
Hereβs a quick trivia for you. While writing for Arduino in the IDE, what type of value is output by .toInt()?
The questions for ask an engineer do they get them from here or the youtube chat?
hint: itβs not int
@latent tiger Both, I think.
@latent tiger both (and possibly others)
Hello,
what license are you using for your Arduino DHT-sensor-library and you Adafruit_Sensor library?
thx @river peak @strange mantle
@lament flume It works better when doing things on the fly, and lets me work with layers better.
I wish I could get softonic free π¦
@tepid jolt prolly MIT, i think ya just emailed about this? we'll check out and update
i mean wirecast
@glossy glacier , donβt forget itβs audio control and manner of setting up events π (Iβm an insider / pro user for Wirecast).
yah we use wirecast here
@tepid jolt just pulled it up. DHT.cpp says MIT license.
If youβre only streaming to YouTube, itβs free
granted, massively hindered by limited inputs but free
@high eagle I havent finished moving yet becuase I need pro audio stuff... And that is $$$.
soon though.
Yeaβ¦
@glossy glacier But it's a sound investment!
DING!
v8 has a bunch of issues Iβm working with them on.
im just happy that i now have interent that even attempts to let me stream π
only at 720p though
Oh, those newsletter popups are grinding my gears! I'm like "I literally stumbled across your site. Why would I want a newsletter from you? I mean, why? I haven't read your article!!!" /off the soapbox
Did I hear Rockets? π
what are you guys streaming about?
lots of folks use OBS for streaming
@open girder @muted mesa Does the mit license not requiere you to include it in the root folder?
I do events for the tech community in Toronto
Microcenter has the Raspberry Pi Zero W (yes W) for $5.00 for early Black Friday
+1 for OBS. It's free, and it's very powerful.
I donβt want to post links here because itβs against policy and this isnβt the right place to self promote
@high eagle one link is totally ok π
@waxen thistle I really like it, but the on the fly stuff is kinda bad... And it does not work well with a bunch of media.
@open girder @muted mesa I need it for a university project so the legal part is important
How does Show and Tell work?

10% off all items in stock code is RADICALHARDWARE expires 11/15/17 @ 11:59pm ET #askanengineer http://www.adafruit.com @open girder
For people making videos (not even streaming) OBS is probably the best software i've found for capturing from a webcam for free
I shouldn't get into rockets again.... The wife will kill me.... ><>
I'm really digging the early black friday deals -- I like spending those days off with family, not huddled over a computer or waiting in line at stores.
@tepid jolt I would have to look it up. I rarely remember anything about licenses and their rules. π£
@river peak There are several places in the Toronto area that I want to talk to. I don't know how reasonable there prototype service is.
@open girder One link, you say?
Thats zelda
lol
(joking)
That's Link from Zelda
π΅ It's all about that Link, no Zelda. π΅
My next big event is going to be for FITC Toronto. Our AR/VR event on Dec 2 http://live.fitc.ca but I do events for community groups like Maker faire/festival Toronto, GirlGeeksTO, TorontoJS, HTMLToronto, and much more. (A lot with techmaster)
@weak vapor Here you go! https://learn.adafruit.com/how-to-get-added-to-the-adafruit-google-plus-show-and-tell-circle/about-show-and-tell
@odd stream Local is super useful. I use PCBWay because it's dirt cheap. Small PCBs are $30 fully shipped.
Thanks
Box from @open girder arrived while I was on S&T! That's for next week's project π
@high eagle PReviews are automatic. Not your fault.
@odd stream glad it showed up today
@river peak Aisler is reasonable, but shipping (from Europe) can be $$ or slow.
@odd stream Nice!
I'm hoping i still have my table center lights after the wedding Friday, I've a funny feeling some will break etc!
@river peak whatβs your need for prototyping? I may be able to direct you to places and people here in Toronto
Also... My projects will start including cases/enclosures early next year when my printer shows up! Maker level up!
oh, wait⦠I mean @odd stream
Wooo, I want to check that out.. Mu
@high eagle I'm close to Baltimore. @odd stream is in Toronto.
Near TO
@eternal vapor Mu looks great!
Re stream: The world will end with somebody saying βI wonder what happens if Iβ¦β
@lament flume They look great!
@high eagle And/or "That's not what I expected"
Thanks @clear matrix
@high eagle Usually small boards, soem TH, some SMD, small qty typically. I'd like a place that could handle it if I asked for several 100 copies. Idelaly a place that did pick & place as well for large batches.
@lament flume Those look great! Could you make it move with music?
talk to HackLab over at Queen and Dufferin. They can both likely help with tiny prototypes and their founder has done small runs using local. He is also one of the founders for Maker Festival TO (our local Maker Faire variant)
@high eagle Thanks! I'll do that.
Last I remember, they built their own pick and place⦠or were about to finish it.
@weak vapor I think so! Each has their own esp8266 running a software on it called mclighting
which basically provides an API to control the lights
so if something that could process audio could send them the commands then it should work
even a PI or something should be able to do it
I will be suprised if we ever see them in 1 piece like this again π
You could use an ESP2566 or what ever it is, and allow the lights to be programed with your phone. GreatScott! has a good video on Youtube about using the WiFi capabilities to controll a light
Each of these have their own webpage that you can use, I think he used Blink was it?
R.I.P. TechShop --- Lots of memories
βHow did you go bankrupt?"
Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.β --Ernest Hemingway
Was Techshop like Adafruit?
Techshop were makerspaces
I went to the Menlo Park one back when Jim first had it going
Ah ,that's a shame
Glad to see you in the live streams @open girder , I was Matthew Potter from the feeds. Sophi is great, sheβs a really good friend of us all at FITC
Great to see you supporting the whole conference, weβre talking to them about bringing it to Toronto next year
Looks like the Open Source DHARMA Initiative
The electric snips are nice. Probably standard for manufacturing, but still nice.
Don't want to get my finger caught in those clipers
@weak vapor They wouldn't be caught for long
XD
@regal garnet , That's what I first thought of too. According to Lostpedia that logo is based on some Taoism symbolism.
Are there Adafruit IO tutorials?
@cyan veldt yep
Wohoo!

Nice Hakko!
@regal garnet I noticed that. Sweet.
hey, I'm curious about compatibility between the OctoWS2811 Adaptor and the Teensy 3.6. I see the 3.5 is listed as 5V tolerant, but not the 3.6. Wondering though if the OctoWS2811 becomes the way around that?

Hi
@spring heath Hey!
@lament flume So is that to say I can use the Teensy 3.6 and the OctoWS2811? but I should use a level shifter to bridge the 3.3V of the Teensy 3.6 to the 5V of the OctoWS2811?

what is the encoder you use?

@open girder My question: What's involved in working for/getting a job with Adafruit? I've always been curious
What is the best way to interface a quadrature shaft encoder to various arduinos (without directly reading the A & B on arduino pints)
@river peak People have suggested contributing to circuitpython.
@wild urchin Well, my name is purple. But I'm curious about things that, well, pay my bills.
do you get a tattoo with the prize
My name is white, so clearly I'm not sure. But it was the thing suggested to me last time I asked.
@river peak Just ask on show and tell, worked for @rapid hornet π
I'm a devops/python developer though.
hey y'all. how do you get the smoke monster badge?

@lament flume I'm working on that!

Carbon allotropes. We got to use the electron microscopy lab at the University of Florida in an engineering research program I got into but the literal colourscale photo file was corrupted.

@glossy glacier What about a finger?
Take accelerometers and the pressure sensor I have, and make a tracking device to figure out how far up my floor in my office building is.
@weak vapor organics don't work so well
And log it.
Ah. It would'ev been cool to see though.
@weak vapor It would also have to be a severed finger...
Oh......
@agile cave I even have one I hooked a neon sign transformer up to Superconference.
Since larger wouldn't fit in the vacuum cahmber
@weak vapor you could take some old skin and electroplate it.
Thanks and good night!
or maybe just cover it in bare conductive ink.
@agile cave another option via SPI: http://www.robotshop.com/en/pulse-count-module.html
and so ELECTRON MAN was created. After being bombarded by subatomic particles he can control the relationship between electrons and photons, creating a transverse force (it makes sense if you understand quantum field theory and aren't too picky about it).
Thank you!
Great show! Goodnight all!

Now to rewind and watch the first 45 minutes of the show that I missed. π
Bye
Ya should do @dry sluice
Night all!
This page specifically mentions the adapter board working with the 3.6
I'll be hanging in the Adafruit Circuit Playground forum over next many weeks to help folks and learn more myself
@glossy glacier You could do some cropping and easily pass that image off as a sci-fi fusion reactor of some sort.
@glossy glacier Someone here suggested eye glasses. If glass even works that way.
@lament flume I was just thrown off by the conflicting mention of the teensy 3.6 not being 5V tolerant so was looking for some confirmation
@spring heath Yay! Circuit Playground Express was my first board. π
@river peak Fusor will be on the show and tell in a few weeks.
@clear matrix I mentioned optical stuff a while back. Electrons would show a very different picture than visible light
Yeah, electrons are all surface effect, so I only get an image from the very top layer of what I am scaning.
I have done some Classic Circuit Playground tutorials, there are some ideas spinning to highlight the Express
@glossy glacier Could you do a prossesor dye?
I really like using standard remote controls to trigger a project to doo what it will do........... CPX hhas a nice IR receiver
@glossy glacier Would it be possible to scan the surface of an incandesent lightbulb filiment while it's glowing. Turned on in other words.
sorry, my discord is laggy
@heavy siren Oh man, that would be COOL. Wait, no. It'd be quite warm.
@heavy siren I have to keep my scan chamber completely dark in the visible range...
Is it possible to get a Circuit Python temp tattoo instead of the 'As see on show & tell' sticker?
Why's that? What components does it interfere with?
@glossy glacier ah, right, darkness. I figured as long as there is a vacuum it would work. Didn't think about all that photon emission.
@river peak The Electron Detector uses something called a photo multiper, which counts photons that come off a scintillator
Oh. And light is photons.
@glossy glacier Woo, now that sounds down right scintilating. π
@glossy glacier Does that mean that part of the SEM process would be visible to a camera? I kinda want a camera put in there to take some pictures/video
No, well kinda in some really edge cases.
Most sems have a chamber camera to make sure you don't hit anything. They use near inferred to not interfer with detectors.
@glossy glacier Is the signal from the photo-multiplier digital or analog?
Analog.
It's basically counting individual photons, so very sensitive.
Some detectors do use a camera and scintillator though.
Mono tone I suppose as well. Simple black and white TV, sort of. Digitizing the signal could allow for processing which could provide filtering and various effects.
I wonder if that detector is using charge coupled devices, the old CCD tech used back in the day.
Like this:)
All of the processing my sem does is analog, but the new ones definitely have a lot of digital stuff.
Remember this thing is 1980s.
Ok, brightness and contrast I can understand but condensor lens? Is that for focusing?
Right, 80's great decade. My 20's
The CCD detectors are for doing very special crystal orientation stuff. It's called EBSD.
Condenser does beam size.
Wow, look at those pics. Cool stuff Adam.
Many people these days are in the science of looking up. It's cool to see what is there when looking down.
So you couldn't scan the DNA molecule eh?
DANA is to small for my SEM. I might know have something else for that though.
Adam you are forever going to catch me off-guard with "SEM," http://www.vintagesynth.com/oberheim/sem.php π
@glossy glacier Thanks for the great images!
@glossy glacier -- thanks for doing what you do!
I used to do science demonstrations at a museum using an old JEOL JSM-35, bringing up images live in front of an audience and then talking about the (usually evolutionary) reasons behind the sub-mm structures we could observe.
It was a fun show, and I was sad when the instrument had to be retired.
One of the things I showed and talked about was, in fact, an incandescent light bulb filament. (But not under power -- hard to do in a small vacuum chamber.)
@covert comet It's always sad when one of these things gets retired. I don't personally have many biological samples yet, the drying process is a bit more involved... I am working on a cryo method right now though that should help out with that. I have had a light bulb fillament under my old SEM before, but it was starting to struggle with things at that point. I did recently rebuild it though, and I will be bringing it back up soon.
Bio samples were our bread and butter since we had a gold sputter coater. I did an ant and a bunch of plant samples, some animal and human hair samples.
@covert comet I don't have one, yet, but that should change soon. I will be needing to do some high mag work of wet samples, thus cryo...
Yeah, the cryo stuff always impressed us. I also seem to recall the word 'microtome'.
I am a bit embarassed to mention this era in my working life started 28 years ago, so it's not totally fresh in my mind.
@covert comet Yeah, I am looking to get one, specifically a cryo one, but that's going to be a bit.
In any case, keep up the good work, and please keep "reporting".
Tonight I'll probably dream of compound eyes.
Or maybe getting stuck on one of these ...
@glossy glacier Quick Question fer ya...
Could the electron beam be used to build up material sort of like 3D printing with Resin and UV light but with some other material and the beam of electrons???
@heavy siren Oh man, can you. Its called Electron Beam Induced Deposition, or EBID. Its really crazy cool, and shcokingly hard to pull off. I dont think I will be able to make my JSM do it due to how the colum works, but it should be posible with the ISI. It will reqire that I add differential pumping, vacuum system telemetry, 3 more vacuum pumps to it, and write the control software, but should be posible.
@glossy glacier Now that's cool stuff. Electron Beam Induced Deposition. Why didn't I think of that. Thanks Adam. Got a feelin' this googol search is going to be deep.
@glossy glacier That seems like a tall order. But it also sounds awesome
@clear matrix thanks! π

hi all
just getting set up now
will be live on the hour
with my new and improved workbench camera!
Hey, John - looking forward to the show
Hi @eager sapphire thanks!
Getting signal here...
I just hit go to test out the BG music on my channel slate. LMK if you hear it,
Yep
super!
Got some funk to it
thanks! I wrote it with code in Sonic-pi

Was kinda looking forward to some ado, first.
Ah
Nice closeup shots
Escape Room Puzzle? Color me surprised π π π
@haughty quiver as far as the decimal goes you could always paint the dot on and handle the decimal in code.
Yo
Literally, fixed-point.
Kapton tape works well, too.
do the pins line up so could you plug it directly into the board?
Not going... Would be dots on the status screen
is threre a reason to use the metro over a stadard uno?
Much better...
Metro is about 10% cheaper...
....plus, youβd be supporting the wonderful folks at Adafruit
is it the same proc?
Yep, 16MHz 328P
We sure love the ATmega328 here at Adafruit, and we use them a lot for our own projects. The processor has plenty of GPIO, Analog inputs, hardware UART SPI and I2C, timers and PWM galore - ...
@haughty quiver What are you using for the super overhead cam?
@haughty quiver King of random did one as well
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Do you see yellow center with red on the sides or all red segments?
@haughty quiver Thanks. Looking for something similar - mirrorless, of course.
Camera effect. Thanks for the info.
Use a regular header and just bend the leads?
That'd make them shorter still
Isnβt that what that is?
It is, which is why after the bend they're shorter
Header->vise
Sorry, I'm late to the show - are the NeoSegments a new product, or is this a custom creation?
Yeah, I bend these all the time... sometimes on purpose
best when it is on purpose.
Tinning the pins may help them make and keep contact.
The camera is working great!
oh yeah john is live
Yeah, it would add thickness to keep in place. I think the longer ones bent would be great
I just came home
Have to bend every other one so itβll grip
does john have those new cables with connectors?
You lost video on camera 2
face cam have no signal
Face cam is jealous of new cam.
There he is
To my earlier comment about mu-editor, it works when installed from pip on ubuntu 17.10. The monolithic bin is a no go though.
Which 7 segment is that?
Hey, nice pliers
@sullen seal it's the NeoSegment: https://www.crowdsupply.com/maksmakes/neosegment
sweet
where can you get
βDonβt do this at homeβ. Oh, weβd never do that ahem.
@haughty quiver We lost the audio
These NeoPixels are great. We've come a long way since the days of pixie tubes.
there's no audio
refreshed youtube, still silent.
sorry, technical difficulties! Iβm gonna restart the stream
We'll be here
So, I also missed the start of the stream. What's the appeal of the neosegment over a normal 7 segment display?
RGB
Looks like you can add "modules" to it too
addressability
did he leave or did my tablet freeze?
resetting stream, stand by...
RGB and modular iirc
Just learned you cannot paste a URL to its own line, youβve got to have some text in front of it for discord to turn it into a clickable link with some presentation.
I don't deal with 7-segment displays all that much. Price & features being considered, how do these measure up to a traditional display?
Essentially this is ideal if you want a display that has individually addressed RGB colors with a variable length
If youβre targeting a fancy, bright clock or countdown, this is ideal
Since they're modular, the reusability is also nice because it can be used if you need a 2 display or 4 display etc
This is great for people that make things that are short use (escape room puzzle, etc)
I sense activity
He's trying, stand by....
music
plays some elevator music.
Also, the individually addressed RGB parts means you can represent a bit more intricate display. ie: countdown that changes color with time remaining
Tall, and tan, and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking..
The live demo gremlins show up again, we totally feel your pain @haughty quiver
Great now I canβt stop hearing that song, and i did it to myself.
@haughty quiver using phone keyboard make me want to play with my old nokia parts
i crashed Wirecast HARD
7-bar music for 7-segment
You gotta go big in all things, John
Did you bend more headers to the camera equipment π
lol
bending connections isn't ALWAYS the answer.
But when it is...
It's never the RIGHT answer, just sometimes, the much easier answer π
Just like the path do the dark side....faster, easier, and they have cookies!
Sometimes, Percussive Maintenance is required, too.
BFH at the ready
Stream still down?
Can someone post in here when the stream is back up? I'm watching from my digital Lab and can't check a bunch
Si, @proven lintel
@analog agate sure we'll get you the heads up
There will be great rejoicing, @analog agate
Many a-thanks
I'd offer to bring balloons and streamers, but all I have here is half of a tuna sub and a key lime soda.
Real party animal.
In the meantime, Iβm singing Ipanema just slightly off key.
I'm just sitting here "working" looking over at my workbench thinking "I should really clean that off so I can do projects again"
Key Lime Soda. Hmmmm, I like the sound of that. π
All you need now is some salt and vinegar chips, @waxen thistle
I miss chips π¦
@heavy siren Stewarts makes it.
https://www.publix.com/images/products/455000/455726-600x600-A.jpg
They make a fine root beer, too
@eager sapphire Indeed they do!
@waxen thistle Check that out. Thanks eh? I love limes.
I haven't tried their Birch Beer yet, but I'm really hoping to find it
Sounds tasty!
Still want to try Moxie Cola - understand itβs a bit on the rude side, and a real hit up in New England
I'm not a big soda fan, so when I indulge, it's the good stuff.
Moxie is pretty good.
Canβt find it here in Colorado
I mean, there's diet soda, but its not nearly as rewarding.
I cannot handle diet soda
I wish I could find a decent diet Ginger Ale
(Its all I can drink, so I take what I can get if I get the craving)
BINGO!!!
OK, just restarted!
Diet Soda tastes like low-fat ice cream. Or drinking decaf coffee.
In Seattle, they called decaf coffee a "hot steaming cup of why bother?"
@analog agate He's back
it's back
Johnnyβs back! @analog agate
Awe yiss. Thanks
Park Workshop
@analog agate its back
Good copy here, John
yeah we can hear you!
