Reverse Retrpbrite
yellowing is usualy photo-oxidation.... can be UV... can be Ozone... can be chemical... can be reversed using hydrogen peroxide-based methods. happens to nearly all plastics at diff rates
polymaker is my fave too, it's really good
clear coat has UV inhibitor... and also seals the plastic away from oxygen

๐ โ Good afternoon, Tim! Hope your week has been a good one.
๐
Yes, we've gotten a break from the summer heat here as well, thank goodness
shift doesn't seem to me to be the correct thing... you just want to do "address and 0b1000000"
that's or, not and.
& 0b1111111
to set the big, it's or, to clear it, it's and
*bit
it's doing or on both ways... 1 or 0 is still 1
might work. i'm losing brain cells on the shift. ๐
it's the first shift. doing >>1 is going to ose the LSBit
lose
just do the &0x7
f
need to type slower. lol
the & will clear the bit, and the | will put it back if needed
so to be clearer... do & 0x7F first, that will clear the bit. then do or with bit << 7
do not do the >> 1
ya, that looks right
put it in a temp variable. foo = self.chip_id
those are decimal not hex
80 is decimal
is the "in" not working?
try "print(chip_id in {x,y}"
0x50 is decimal 80 i think ...
ya, 5x16 is 80
bin 0x50
can't tell... it's not printing in hex
buffer gets overwritten, it's not the old/changed value anymore?
when it prints 50 i think that's 0x50
print the whole buffer after it returns it to see what we're getting back
print whatever it is that we're indexing into
ya that looks right
i'd say only write the first byte
wait...
are the constants correct?
hex vs decimal consts
right
ok, good
that was funky indeed

Do you have a logic analyzer?
I'm not watching live but I wrote something up on that a few years ago: https://www.hackster.io/markkomus/using-a-raspberry-pi-pico-as-a-logic-analyzer-with-pulseview-e12543
Nice, Thank you!
Did you try turning it off and on again?
Thanks for the stream! I was itching to get out the 4-channel โscope and do some SPI-ingโฆ
Does that have any benefits over the Raspberry Pi Pico trick mentioned earlier, in the context of SPI? #live-broadcast-chat message
For me, itโs nice to be able to see analog artifacts like noise and power issues that could be superimposed on the digital signals. My analog scope has SPI and I2C protocol interpretation which also helps. A logic analyzer is more useful when you need to store a bunch of bus transactions โ when analog noise isnโt an issue. The analog scopeโs memory isnโt optimized for capturing long data streams.

show and tell today?
I thought I heard them say no S&T or AAE.
Really? ๐ฟ
I'm here anyway hoping I heard wrong
If true, it is my fault for finally being home on a Wednesday
I was hoping there would be a formal announcement on https://www.youtube.com/adafruit that there are or there aren't shows today?
I'm not seeing anything on the blog about it either way.
So, anybody here got anything to talk about anyway?
I jus spent 8 hours printing a AA battery storage box and the batteries don't fit.
Can you jam in AAAs at least?
HOWEVER, I did recover a original Model F IBM/AT keyboard. Cleaned up and WORKS!
Yea the AAA's will fit.
Did you know there are AAAA batteries as well?
I was gonna say this turned into a fail and tell chat, but then you start talking about successes.
I though the KB wasn't working because it didn't work on my PICO 56 project. Turns out it needed an adapter and a few more volts/amps.
Yeah. I had a stylus that used AAAA batteries. The only place I ever saw them on the shelf was at a Menards.
Next time, crack open a 9 volt battery - there are 6 of them in there.
Didn't realize 9 volt was AAAAs, knew they had the cells
I cracked open a few and only one had AAAAs in it.
Another thing I, I troulbleshot the keyboard to the point of complete disassembly three times because the Scroll Lock LED wouldn't come on. Turns out, Easpberyy Pi OS doesn't map it anyway and it worked great on my PC as long as I had it plugged in when I powered on the PC.
Yeah, I think I cracked open one and it was a munch of carbon rods and dividers, not individual cells.
I gotta find a dead 9V battery now.
Here is a fun one - 1/2AA
Does anyone ever actually use scroll lock?
This is a list of the sizes, shapes, and general characteristics of some common primary and secondary battery types in household, automotive and light industrial use.
The complete nomenclature for a battery specifies size, chemistry, terminal arrangement, and special characteristics. The same physically interchangeable cell size or battery size ...
@nova totem Nope. Not in the Linux world at least. I learned NOT to use my Pi as a test platform for keyboard functionality.
I used to have a KVM that used the scroll lock to switch between computers. It seems like I used it before for something, but I sure can't remember what.
I started to use a Zero 2W to receive radio via RTLSDR
Cool. I got a couple pigeon holed away for a Pi Hole project.
@dim knot I've seen the 1/2 AAs but didn't know that's what they called them.
That's what I called it, but I didn't read what it was called on the side.
Well, if there's no show, they could at least point the webcam at the pick-and-place and run some Daft Punk or Philip Glass music. (remember that, @dim knot ?)
Gotta back up on the battery holder. Only one hole in one row is tto tight. Wonder why.
Annnnd.... sandpaper saves the day.
Would the pick and place be running now?
What's the holder for? is it (or will it be?) wired to work?
It's just a storage box. Got tired of the open plastic packs dumping out on me all the time.
I keep looking at new 3d printers. Do I need another no, but could I have one...
I picked up an E3 V3 SE at Microcenter a while back and it's been sufficient for me. I retired my perfectly working Ender 3 Pro that is modded to the bejesus.
My best investment has been my build plate. I got a Cryogrip Pro Glacier.
Yes Mouse - I recall the days of them just turning the camera on and shipping. ๐
I also replaced all the wheel type bearings with rails and blocks. Quieted down a good deal at higher speeds
I used to work in a factory. Watching someone elses just isn't for me.
Gotta admit though, all our robots did was palletize boxes of tape.
I've just been talking to friends with newer models and getting jealous. The biggest thing I'd love is a bigger build plate but that adds up fast
Bigger MAY be better but I rarely fill my bed as it is. However, my biggest problem with bigger bed is a place to put it. I'm kinda Work Space Impaired.
Is there an Ask an Engineer tonight? (Also, I forgot the special command)
thanks, @dim knot !
They do at least have a new product in the catalogue

That was my thought train as well
There was a problem with that, I need to think about it for a sec
Ah, not all apps support the danger override, so if you set the common volume to something over the default 12 they will fail when they see the volume too high
yes, but if you have two apps, both know about safe volume, but only one knows about danger override, you can't use a volume over 12 because the one that doesn't know about danger override will crash
okay, I see
Have you flashed the fruit jam with absolute newest? there were some device/mouse updates recently
๐ nvm
I think there are some core updates after the one you have on there that impacted the core host usb functions
Love this app ๐
neat
The drums work best across the top or bottom
Yellow
I'm not sure but I think the configuration changes the number of bytes that get read each time so I don't think you can just not use the configuration change and not change other things in the app
okay, maybe I saw it somewhere else...
Set in definitions
I removed those changes
From an earlier commit
With the recent (this week) update to the core, you really should try/except catch device queries for device ID/product ID/Manufacturer, etc

This is a real thing.
In this example all the CS are tied down but they could be attached to a single CS
Any SPI 'slave' will work this way. The 'master' and wiring need to be set up for it.
Adafruit devices are setup for individual CSs
Through, not over.
For this example that master writes 3 bytes and reads 3 bytes coming back. serial. 24 bits in a row.
No. Only the master knows where they are in the chain.
They are just shift registers.
They are in series.
Don't worry about it.
It's similar to the way that neopixels work, but with feedback.
Not too loud. No ringing in the ears. No pain.

The Atari Video Music (Model C240) is the earliest commercial electronic music visualizer released. It was manufactured by Atari, Inc., and released in 1977 for $169.95. I've not tried it yet but some displayio objects now have a contains() method that should help with collision detection (e.g. displayio.Group.contains(), displayio.TileGrid.contains()). I think FoamyGuy has been using it
That's going back aways...
There's always an emulator someone's working on to scratch the itch...?

Echo... Echo... Echo... Echo... Echo... .....
Tod did that get any changes in the last year that you're aware of? I seem to remember some of the object/group/tile types didn't support contains correctly for some use cases (at least including the width+height+scale)
John-ception
no clue. I've not tried it out yet. Last time I did such stuff, I was doing it like JP demo'd a bit ago
I saw the chyron app yesterday. Very cool stuff and a great demo of the ESP32 wifi coprocessor on the Fruit Jam. Only thing I can think of that would make it better would be to support a USB keypad that could enter in the current product ID and update the listing rather than having to change the value in code.py and reload
But that's probably overkill ๐
Got you, senpai

John Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....
My only recommendation with these basic HDMI capture devices is to get one with HDMI passthrough. Depending on your software/hardware setup, you can get a significant amount of lag which makes it difficult to test certain applications (ie: games). The passthrough with a separate monitor fixes that for me. ๐
Thank you for the tip!
Does the ESP32 SPI bus conflict with HSTX? Is it DMA related?

I'm hearing the drums, but they could be just a smidgen louder.
I think your finger taps were just very loud
Some sounds seem to come through better than others per button
you sound good john
This is so much better than the floppy-based samplers I've used in the past. They'd take 8 seconds to load a 1 second sound. ๐คฃ ๐พ
Aww, you can't slappa da bass?
Go Neil Peart!
You could store ALL those drum cards in the flash of a standard Pico
Someone somewhere has to have a converter/adapter that mounts an SD card to one of those

Bye all ๐
Thanks JP + all
thanks so much for coming by all!
what is the context of this? I fixed something a week or two ago
Yep, I think that was the context. I wasn't aware that communication with the ESP32 over SPI was causing HSTX display glitches.
It was the same thing as your neopixel report. If you DMA to or from PSRAM you can stall all DMA including the DMA to HSTX
๐
Doing much better this Friday than last - covid really wiped me out the last week or so. Hope you're doing well this afternoon, also!
You need some Blu-tack or similar for temporary mounting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu_Tack
Yes, that's it exactly
Oh, yeah those plates are cool. I've picked up a few sizes. Definitely good for prepped in-advance setups. Some tacky mounting putty would be good for on-the-fly/easily repositionable setups
(Could also use a combination - stick down the plate with mounting putty to overcome too-stiff usb cables!)
No reason why not. They likely have standoffs you could mount with screws to the plate but would have clips on the other end. Adafruit's store used to have board edge clips, as well, to use with their acrylic board + half breadboard mounting base... Lemme have a poke around
Ah, last I knew, these were out of stock, but the clips: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1116
Not the same as through-mounting hole, but could be useful
I bet John Park could 3D print you something if DigiKey doesn't already carry what you need ๐
If I can ask: when you're approaching working with/from registers, what do you (personally) look for in the documentation to help you get orientated, in terms of understanding how a specific register is setup (word length, endianism, word size, etc)? Take this documentation as a for instance.
(Sorry, didn't realize it was so close to time)
(The only thing I could tell you about endian-ness is that it's a term taken from the 18th century novel Gulliver's Travels, so this is great information! (Thanks Tyeth!)) Thank you for your insight, Tim!

I did the same technique to simulate a blinking cursor in my Z Machine emulator - hide and unhide the small rectangle.
Don't scan any QRcode that Lars shows you... ๐ฎ
OBS is great
Probably a fixed width font would work properly.
What, she doesn't want the font like a 1993 infomercial?!

Crunchy.
Wad up a small rage stuff it in to the tube and blow it through to clean out. It wipes it down and pull gunk

Lol. I thought Discord would block that comment.
Oooo. That's gritty. Better off running good water pressure through it and then wd-40 or similar lubrication after

I hear that - it's cool you've got a memo workflow hack: just watch a few minutes of the stream!
where and when on Sat?
Ooo, wish I could watch live for the logic analyzer setup
10:00 am CDT, 8:00 PDT Sat here.
What did you get?
Thanks
Thanks, Tim! Good evening, all!
I am back for the morning stream. You can watch me learn how to setup & use a saleae logic analyzer on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1oM1d6vSj0 or twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
๐ธ๐ช ๐
๐
Just connect the breakout to the MCU then connect the analyzer to the second stemma connector on the breakout.
No breadboard needed.
Lower signal noise if a breadboard isnโt involved.
Just use the breakoutโs second connector.
Itโs directly connected to the other connector, pin-for-pin.
Having the analog along with the digital signal is very useful. Cool.
You can see the noise and power fluctuations easily. Probably eats capture memory to have analog channels active (if not needed).
Use a regular Stemma to Stemma cable from the MCU to the breakout. Then connect a Stemma-to-female DuPont to the second breakout connector for the logic analyzer input.
Good point. SPI wouldnโt have a thru connection like Stemma.
๐ฏ use the doubler. Sometimes being in the path is better, but often any point of nearly equivalent level is fine
And hi all ๐
Yeah, I2C is just a bus.
Learning to connect and use a logic analyzer from scratch. Nicely done, Tim.
If this was a gardening channel, youโd speed it up 4x and create a video short.
Thanks!

This cable is kinda fascinating - it has an integrated boost converter, so you can plug it into any USB port (from a computer, battery pack, etc), and it will give you a higher DC voltage! ...
Do you include the top plate in the Fruit Jam when using the case?
Just finished guide review, excellent work guys, I couldn't help but print one over weekend...(will goto a friend)

Hey everyone
Good afternoon.
Is this the live-jugglecast-chat channel? ?

JP will later be juggling Lars.

very nice power glove there
ohmygosh JP fix ur editor ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
What, no Comic Sans? ๐
NO OTHER FONTS. ONLY ORBITRON
Lol
only orbitrons
Looks like a balloon animal.
and here's that gist if anyone interested https://gist.github.com/todbot/b966f51307aca8dab64af70dc2954aee
andy think lars generated fonts
Also note the fonts in circuitpython-fonts have like all the characters (or at least all the latin1 chars) so they're pretty big files if you're used to font files that just have ascii. I think there's a way to cull out all the character bitmaps you won't be using but I don't know what that is offhand, beyond running the FontForge gui
Did you remember to include the bodge pathway from the thermal exhaust port to the core?
A neat idea would be to detect no motion after time and go into deep sleep.
I don't know that you could bring it out of deep sleep with the accelerometer though
Can you not use web color names?
Seems strange neopixel library isn't included by default.
It's 2045. All devices are CircuitPython-based. On editing the settings for my toast printer, I accidentally save over the code.py of my atmosphere processor. It's now raining bread in the living room and I can't get the CIRCUITPY drive to show back up
ORBITRON is displeased with your hot swapping
"Incorrect bread setting."
@cinder wind I suggest cleaning the marmalade off your SSD...
JP, looks like you lost your whole /lib directory
Looks like your on a different board
JP, sometimes you can do circup install -a and have it work. This makes circup install all the imports found in code.py
Shutdown to own the /libs (sounds familiar)
Line 8 is different on the board to your computer
Now that matches. So not sure what happened
I would think circup install -a would do it all
You can also be more explicit by creating a requirements.txt with the list of libraries (like normal Python) and do circup install -r requirements.txt
Next week, JP will juggle Bach's Goldberg Variation...
Now do Darude Sandstorm!
Interstellar.
I misheard JP there. I thought he said he had a bag of pitbulls...
I wanna see that juggling demo
sound
Wool dryer balls are good for juggling too

(A couple of weeks ago, we were talking about board mounts - I had mentioned Blu-Tack/mounting putty, you had wondered out loud about board clips other than board-edge mounts from the Adafruit shop link I'd shared. So, to follow up: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/essentra-components/CBLS350A/9342711 )
(Those are sized for the typical 3mm Adafruit board mounting hole, and there's one such on each side. They have others which are threaded female on one side, spear-tip clip on the opposite)

โ
Greetings and salutations from sunny Toronto
Reminds me of the graphical interface logic layer of early versions of SynthEdit.
Will you be able to have 'buttons' and 'outputs' tied to actual I/Os?
7
Black isn't a colour
Black is a really dim color value; 0x000000
Agreed. Black is a pallet value. 8 values.
"Right-click crashes instantly." At least it lets you know where you stand.
Are the gate symbols just bitmaps or made from graphics primitives? (circle, line, etc)
I missed yesterday. Will have to watch before asking a bunch of stupid questions.
Maybe when you 'cut' the gate (right-click) memorize all its properties, then when you 'paste' delete the original and create a new identical one so init runs fresh.
rather than trying to 'move' it
Next would be to have the existing wires move with the gate...
What about tri-state, open-collector & open-emitter outputs?
That makes sense
Interesting idea. Those are shared signal bus outputs that could be fun to model, but represent a more advanced concept of logic design, Iโm thinking.
Agreed. A wired OR is a circuit implementation detail that could be drawn as an explicit gate in logic design.
I regress: then thereโs the concept of using digital gates for analog signals like creating an oscillator from cmos inverters and an RC circuit. And if you remember RTL gates, they could also be used as linear amplifier. Thereโs a rabbit hole for sure.
A CMOS inverter oscillator is only analog in the sense that slew rate and propagation delays exist, but it's logically still digital. I don't know much about RTL.
Definitely a rabbit hole.
Not ahead of you, Tim. In parallel.
If you wanted to, you could make the wires green for 1, red for 0, and black for 'not connected' / 'floating' so people could draw charlieplexing circuits. (for example)
Make everything black while moving
If you are moving it the power wires are also not connected
Got it
It looks like there are actually 6 tiles in an entity, yes?
Yes, it made sense.
Excellent progress today. Thanks for the stream!
Thanks, Tim.
Something for you...
That is great, thank you!
I made some more. Top and bottom inputs are in the middle of the unit tile so standard vertical line and elbow can be used.
Dark yellow inputs can be turned to background if unused.
...and all the wires.
Well, actually there are two more wires but they're kind of superfluous.

Hi JP nice day for a show
Howdy!
Lars is in the HDMI Corner of Shame
Hi JP and the group
How does this compare to the TLV320?
And in both CircuitPython it's easy to run multiple of these DACs simultaneously, for multi-channel shenanigans (for Halloween perhaps!?)
Translucent breadboard seems very 80s, somehow
TLV320DAC has both a speaker amp and a headphone/line driver, and a I2C-controllable mixer to deal with a couple of analog inputs as well as the DAC audio. The TLV320AIC is a codec (ADC & DAC) and really powerful
JP, sound level is great!
Yup now just left channel now for audio
