So, if we want to contribute an with an issue with milestone 9.0.0, do we need to pull from main?

sand lotus
#

sounds about right thank you. didn't realize main was 9.x... most of the backport fixes sound even more complicated for them to go back to 8.x

shell mason
#

sounds logical right

wheat terrace
#

I see... I usually pull from main!

#

Thank you!

new project this should be quick and easy and gratifying

shell mason

djdevon yeah sometimes its "why this work"

sand lotus
#

TWAI = two wire automotive interface

#

have to look up half of the acronyms you mention because i've never spent a second in esp-idf, it's interesting stuff though.

#

lwip seems to be a big part of their tcp/ip stack

timid plover
#

we only see about half of the code window

#

the right half of the code is under the chats

#

so are these errors being detected now because of better gcc ?

#

if it returns - it was rejected 🙂

#

were these library changes mentioned in the migration guide ?

#

maybe it's covered by CMake 🙂

#

there was another section called "libraries" in the guide

lilac tusk
timid plover
#

is there a way to get the call stack on the assertion failure ?

lilac tusk
#

It is light weight after all 🙂

timid plover
#

can you run under gdb - and have a breakpoint in the assertion failure code?

#

like in %ld ?

#

can you log the whole string - not just the character ?

#

log "fmt" string?

#

Thank you! It was pretty cool!

🇸🇪 👋

sand lotus
#

oops missed part of the stream, was working on putting together brackets for the matrix panel display

clever summit
#

I published my first Python library on PyPi yesterday. 🥳
It is a library to control Elecrow's Growcube plant watering devices.

sand lotus
#

12 panels now

clever summit
#

12? Wow!

sand lotus
clever summit
#

The white thing is a reservoir for 1,5 liter.

sand lotus
clever summit
#

I will start making a Home Assistant integration today.

#

It is WiFi.

sand lotus
#

2x 5V 18A PSU's

#

took me 2 weeks and a 1.5 spools of PLA to print all those brackets.

clever summit
#

What size matrices is that?

sand lotus
#

It's all only being driven by the Matrix Portal S3.

#

192x128

clever summit
#

That is a massive amount of LED's!

sand lotus
#

not compared to a TFT... the biggest difference is the length of wires if you think of it as a massive PCB

clever summit
#

Will you be showing that off in the Show&Tell when you are done?

sand lotus
#

Yes, fixed it all today but have yet to turn it on. 🤞

clever summit
#

Fingers crossed then!

sand lotus
#

Was on show & tell last week with it but got the ordering wrong so it was all jumbled up. Reordered the panels in the correct order so it should work but would rather watch foamyguys stream than mess with it more for now.

brisk bone
#

it is handling it, but it replaces with HTML counterparts

sand lotus
#

Yes coming from PHP and figuring out indendation is part of the syntax messed me up for a while.

#

Though I was kind of used to all the period concatenations from JAVA.

brisk bone
#

I recently learned about

something = (
  "line 1"
  "line 2"
)
tiny grove
#

Those will be concatenated and separated by a space

#

Actually, that may just be directly concatenated.

brisk bone
#

or "\n".join(["Line 1", "Line2"])

sand lotus
#

I usually use a + but that's only if the lines get so long that pylint or black complains

#

oh I have to use + i think with requests projects, maybe why i'm so used to using +?

#

yeah for urls that swap back and forth between parameters and inputting variables

tiny grove
sand lotus
#

yeah sometimes copy/pasting lines with the ending comma it might fail if the last line has a comma

tiny grove
#

That's just a syntax error. Those don't matter. What I'm talking about is putting lines at the wrong indentation level.

sand lotus
#

trying to unminify some random websites minified js to see what it's doing is something i don't wish on anyone

clever summit
sand lotus
#

isn't that what ASP is for? 😛

tiny grove
#

Not having lines declaring the end of a block opens up an entire category of bug that can't be caught.

sand lotus
#

like that's their whole motto

#

bracket and single/double quote inception is something I do not miss at all.

tiny grove
#

Basically, python doesn't have any mechanism to protect you from this...

with ...:
    for ...:
        if ...:
            # lots of code
        elif ...:
            # lots more code
        else:
            try:
                # yup, more code
            except ... as ex:
                # error handling code

    # Help! I don't know what level I'm supposed to be at!
sand lotus
#

put a try/except around the entire thing... that's what i do so no matter where it fails i can just skip it lol

tiny grove
#

Doing that just makes it hard to figure out what actually caused the error.

#

Exceptions are meant for error recovery. But when something actually fails, you want it to fail loudly.

sand lotus
#

me skipping errors

unreal bay
#

Not just VLC?

sand lotus
#

VLC for Ubuntu exists

#

I've been using VLC for like... 15 years. still my go to video player.

unreal bay
#

Pretty sure VLC supports DVD menu via media dvd option, but also Vob files

tiny grove
#

It does, but you need libdvd and libcss

sand lotus
#

% sudo snap install vlc

#

VLC killed Windows Media Player. MS didn't even bother anymore because at the time everyone was using VLC anyway.

#

After a new windows install VLC is like the 2nd thing I install.

#

I've never seen that. 😯

#

Thanks!

sand lotus
clever summit
#

Thanks!

sand lotus
#

thank you for the stream. always enjoy ☕ & code with you.

tiny grove
#

To give you an idea of where I'm coming from. I'm a stickler for proper error handling because I used to work on firmware at Intel. There were two dominating approaches there:

  1. Hang the entire system, forcing either a power cycle or use of a debug probe.
  2. Suppress the error message in order to close the bug tracker issue.
Both of these approaches are terrible, particularly in firmware.

Question: I saw the new ADS ADC stemma qt boards. Do you have any plans for some of the other cool I2C ADCs that Texas Instruments makes like the ADS7138? (It can be a fast i2c 8 channel ADC and GPIO expander) 🙂

open girder
#

we have a breakout coming up for 8 x 8bit ADC from ADI

#

ADS7128 looks great too!

lilac tusk
#

Yeah, I previously made an ADS7138 driver for circuitpython but not full fleshed out yet

#

It’s a pretty neat ADC 🙂

sand lotus
#

the TFT featherwing is my all time fav display. just something about being able to plug a feather directly into a display that's very appealing.

sand lotus
#

they've been out of stock for more than a year though, i'm really happy to see it coming back.

open girder
#

😅

lilac tusk
#

Tag are great but a bit pricy for the connector cable

sand lotus
#

the footprint of that doesn't look any smaller with the required holes.

lilac tusk
#

Tag is a bit smaller than the IDC connector footprint

sand lotus
#

ah so just a matter of not having a banana for scale in the image kind of thing?

lilac tusk
#

Common SWD tag is just 6 pins which is nice

sand lotus
#

oh the pin spacing is closer, doesn't look like 2.54

#

oh that's cool

#

if you're not trying to spin up manufacturing with a pogo jig this is a nice compact way for a couple of boards.

#

i attempted to pull apart an IDC cable to reuse with a longer cable, it did not go well, once an IDC cable is made forget about trying to pick it apart.

#

100V !?

#

aw…

#

I was looking at analog muxes the other day… not always easy to understand the specs as some say it's "TTL/CMOS compatible" but actually only when powering them at 5V, not all accept standard levels for the command inputs when you use higher Vcc…

#

Found one finally but I'll just stick to the other I ordered as it's like 2$ instead of 8$, even if it's not controlled as binary but separate inputs.

#

mechanical switches have also bouncing…

#

I'll use a DG411LEDJ-GE3 for my 68HC705 programmer arduino shield… I'll use a MEGA anyway so plenty of pins to use, no need for a binary decoder.

#

And don't assume the logic levels are TTL compatible even if the docs says so, sometimes it's always the same voltage, but sometimes it's like Vcc-something…

By analyzing chip datasheets, we will emulated the 'adafruit' driver style, leveraging the model's exposure to ladyada's GitHub libraries. Challenges exist, but prompt optimization may improve outcomes. We will craft a driver for the VCNL4020 IR...

And yes, I have plans for the weekend. My niece and brother are playing in a marimba "band" so we'll be traveling to a coast town to see them and other marimba bands. Some percussion festival or something like that.

#

btw, I saw that ZKM (like KMK but with Zephyr) uses something like a on the next boot go to uf2 for update, so you can reset the board by using a keyboard-button instead of a pcb-button. That was pretty cool.

#

I ended up using ZMK, but I have some boards+adapters in the snail mail so that I can "upgrade" my keyboard soon.

#

Yeah, I saw your keyboard library. I needed unicode, so I went with ZMK. But I plan on going to circuitpython as soon as possible.

#

good morning, just waking up. ☕

#

library releaser?

#

kind of one of the things i don't like about adabot is it artificially makes libraries look like they've been worked on when they haven't been touched in years, sometimes. at least it leaves a comment that it was an adabot update of some kind.

#

i mean like sphynx, or pylint, or black format updates that makes some minor change and not a feature improvement in a repo codebase.

inner spade
#

Anything you can do to further abstract the management of libraries is welcomed.

#

(That’s why I’m working on hardware designs today.)

sand lotus
#

i understand the need for adabot, it's awesome.

inner spade
#

Thanks for the stream. Stay safe!

sand lotus
#

but like take wiznet for example i'll go to a library and look at the lastest update and it's usually adabot and not from the author., from a scripter point of view looking for examples it's deceiving... as a maintainer yeah you have a different perspective on adabot.

clever summit
#

Ok, thanks! CU!

sand lotus
#

thank you for the stream, i'll be gone next week too.

smoky island
#

I'm not sure I follow how it's deceiving though. Whether that latest commit came via the help of adabot or directly from one of the maintainers doesn't change anything in my mind. The change isn't presenting itself as a change to examples either way so I don't see how it would be deceiving.

sand lotus
#

last update doesn't always mean it was touched by the author, a lot of times it's adabbot doing maintenance., making it harder to see "what's new"

The only thing that I would like to see with the PCIE adaptor is either the back end of the connector being cut out, or having a x16 slot with the majority of pins not being populated. This just allows for cards that do not have a 1x interface to physically fit, and we can just deal with the reduced speeds (for the device only being at 1x).

I don't know that I'd do the LM3405 again; you need extra flyback and boost diodes, but it works!

marsh hull
cinder wind
# marsh hull Thanks I didn't find this when I was looking!

it's not published to the bundle yet. It uses a PIO StateMachine per pin so you can't use it simultaneously for all 23 pins of an RP2040 like you can with touchio. So it's in limbo currently until I can get back to it. But it's much faster, as you found!

# cinder wind it's not published to the bundle yet. It uses a PIO StateMachine per pin so you...

Totally. I rolled it into an esphome component but it does not do multiple pins. (Or max 8 pins I guess.) https://github.com/dlizotte-uwo/esphome/tree/release/esphome/components/rp2040_touch

Yes, they’ll be live in 5 minutes.

Ok. Because I remember John showing his prototype of the pressure washer thing... tho I can't see the point of the game.

Makes me wonder if there are any mobo with PCIe, PCI and ISA at once… 🤔

gray obsidian

Ok, mobos with PCIe+PCI+ISA were definitely a thing. Some even have an LGA775 socket… meaning they can be fitted an LGA771 Xeon with some persuasion. 🤔

#

Another option could be to make a PCIe to ISA bridge card with ribbon cable to an extra backplane…

#

Oh no, more projects 😨

Is there going to be a PT 3D printing rant this week?
I randomly came up with a great name for a segment.... "Phil Laments"

#

Is it specific heatshrink or any white one?

#

Doesn't look that expensive

#

Well, should check the prices for consumables too

#

just like regular printers the devices are subsidized by consumables…

#

Specially if it doesn't have DRMs on the cartridges, though there aren't generic yet probably for this brand
