and of course that cable I was showing live was the adafruit rainbow floppy cable
you can also just cut off the notch of the cable header
@turbid hill yes in a pinch and if you're careful!
I used to have to do that a long time ago when that was common in computers

and this guy would work for all your floppy needs as well, 5.25 and 3.5 .. https://www.amazon.com/CablesOnline-Universal-Floppy-Ribbon-5-25in/dp/B00FZ3IL80/
you use the non-twisted section with the featherwing
buy the connectors and roll of ribbon and a ribbon clamp tool and make your own

Here we go!
That sound effect is giving me flashbacks
That's gotta be the coolest floppy anyone's made so far. Gonna be tough for anyone to top that one Anne.
Awesome floppy collection opening the show, @spring heath !
we are not yet reading the animated gifs off a real floppy .. I'm not sure it'd be fast enough or big enough, somebody want to do the math?
I wonder what the typical bit rates for floppies are?
The 240x240 homer gif I used is only 273Kb so it should fit on a floppy, even a 5 1/4
do you mean the file transfer time? i don't think it'll play live?
C64 + 1541 says 400 bytes/s. So may be a small break between frames
You mean reading them off the real save icon? 😉
I have a brand new infant as well @open girder really enjoy the new baby toy hacking

Searching Digi-Key is an artform and I'm learning to paint thanks to Desk of Lady Ada.
Wait, what? M7 Feather??? I've been busy lately, did I miss something? Is there a new chip?
learning "how to search" is such a crucial tool
I keep wondering if Baby Einstein are going to find out about it and either be supportive or have a legal freakout
the pico dvi library is originally by Wren6991 https://github.com/Wren6991/PicoDVI but what Adafruit added is a version which works in Arduino.
I assume its the NXP processor on the M7 Metro.

oh that sounds very handy for developers. maybe someday send all the safe mode errors directly to github.
Yeah, the MagTag's LEDs mean that safe mode is quite good at waking you up heh

circuit python now has a BSOD. someday we'll have a pink screen of death for the web editor? that would be neat. there's a ton of new possibilities with safe mode now. Amazing stuff Danh & Developers!
@sand lotus Maybe an Adafruit "Pink Screen of (friendly) Diagnosis"
Nice, guess I need to update the MagTag I'm leaving my mother with to CP8 so I can use this: https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-safe-mode/safemode-py
lofi kaleidoscope beats for studying?
Question: when will adafruit stock black LEDs
Oooh a portable kaleidoscope projector!
PhilT wants to throw an Ask a Raver episode. 🙂
Hmm, anyone know if CP 8.1 beta 1 reasonably stable? Need it for the safemode thing on the MagTag but my mother is not gonna be able to update this herself
Maybe some matte-black LEDs. Some black hole LEDs.
with all the synths and floppy stuff lately, this is doable.
I mean the MagTag LEDs during a CP update definitely seems quite ravey 😉
ohh stencil art
I think it just started ....
McDry? You have to dry reels or was that for 3d filament?
An Ask a Goth episode would be nice, too. (Check out Los Espookys, BTW.)
sounds good for halloween
"snap-fit": everyone take a drink
Ruiz brothers snap stuff is really good. It's hard to get those kind of tolerances right.
Its shimmery... that's cool material
I've built a ton of designs in the past couple years inspired by Ruiz brothers' snap-fit approach in Fusion 360.
Getting tolerances right on seamless friction fit stuff is also hard
I do a lot of friction fit
iMX is a new thing we're all going to get used to hearing more of. M7's are going to kinda be a game changer.
I really would love to grab one of the m7 boards one of these days
@hot frigate here you go .. M7
@lilac tusk Yep. I make use of Fusion 360 parameter variables to tweak those as I test 3D printed designs.
OctalSPI? First time I've heard of that.
I’ve found that for my Ender3 pro, 0.2mm difference in width is perfect
If you use default tolerance, I use inclusive which is .3mm. i'm still trying to get it down to .2 though. it's tough.
Nice build, @lilac tusk
Thanks 🙂

Hello usb serial converter
If the SAMD51 was the Metro M4 Express, I feel like this should be the Metro M7 MagLev considering the speed 😉
well since the arduino we've been doubling or tripling fairly consistently. going from 240mhz esp32 to 500mhz and 600mhz is a nice generation jump. i think CP is ready for it.
did you see the new Arduino
plenty of time to get used to the M7 family and move up the ladder one step at a time.
This is new from Arduino

The Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi is designed for ambitious makers who want to step up their game. Can an RP2040 @ 12MHZ handle an ESP32-WROOM-32E, FONA, and talking to a display driver and some sensors. It has a wq25 4MB FLASH for the BIOS and a microSD slot for the file system. I hope it’s up to the task. I think the PIO can handle some of the tasks but I’m asking an engineer!
wild, they had some headers made with that weird nonstandard spacing, so they could place fewer parts I guess?
BGA though. I'll just wait and get some Adafruit stuff.
Are you saying 12MHz for SPI?
The clock speed is 12MHZ
The RP2040 is clocked at 133MHz
?
12MHz crystal feeds a PLL which gives it up to 133MHz clock
PIO has single clock cycle access to GPIO (up to 16 pins on two PIO registers)
I know
So theoretically you could drive a parallel display pretty quickly
I must have mis-heard, though I heard around $10 🙂
i can honestly say i'm going to rewatch this eye on npi over and over this week. my mind is blown.
I just noticed 'MIPI" on that MCU table for the 1160 and 1170. That's the same as as the RaspberryPi... so HD cameras are about to be possible it sounds like.
It’s talking to I think an ILI chipset on an Adafruit tft breakout
It doesn’t drive the display
But what about the ESP and the FONA
Sure, it should be able to manage that
🆕
ok great 👍
new new new new!
The thing is you’re not going to be doing all those things at the same exact time so you should not have any issues

Question: Where is the best location for me to seek assistance from experienced CircuitPython programmers with a project? I can do wiring, CAD, etc, but programming is completely outside my current skillset.
Should I seek assistance on the forums, Discord, the Adafruit job site, or somewhere else?
Makes sense for how much she gets done every week. So many new designs.
Clones. I knew it!
I'd say look at both the learn guides and the #help-with-circuitpython channel
Pink screen of time-out
hahahhaah
Also it can be good to start by working on a basic project using sample code, like stuff with a sensor, and looking at some more complex stuff over time, it's how I learned, a lotttt of trial and error because USB mounted stuff makes it super easy to just keep tweaking your code and saving until it works
Thanks @covert crag That's kind of what I was doing, but what I want to do involves making things work together that aren't in the standard guides. Programming just makes my head hurt.
Probably best in that channel, but there's a lot of learn guides for more complex projects you can use to get an idea about how to do more complex stuff
Thanks @open girder and good night. 🌔
realises he misread the message not as looking for someone to hire to help heh
👏
I'll start working on a description of the project to post up.

ohh bob cat yes lol
ooo new choc + sk6812mini-e breakout looks great, @haughty quiver !
as i've learned with step switches having a larger annular ring is very helpful with soldering. a small ring is harder to work with especially if it's connected directly to a huge ground plane. :/
- it's good to not connect one of the switch pins to neopixel gnd, if you ever want to use them in a matrix, 2) next version you should add a smd diode footprint across the keyswitch pins, if you ever want to use them in a matrix. 🙂
bodge mistakes are part of pcb design, it's gonna happen.
even if your breadboard prototype works perfectly getting everything translated to EDA software is the hard part.
specifically SK6812MINI-E (there are many SK6812 variants, unfortunately)
ah the prongs are in the middle of the part? didn't know that. that's smart design.
i bought 50 when they were advertised as through hole solderable 😆 it's true, but not fun
can't surface mount with castellations on top of that sk6812 anyway.
nice pcb design for sure
oh you can through hole them too? what a great versatile LED part design.
@haughty quiver Could you have used small through hole pads instead of surface pads? Would be able to mount the neo on top or bottom.
Or vias
Looks like you're in the process of making your pcb into a proto board lol
the height of the part would still be the same, don't think it would matter much.
could be interest to hex screen
what bodges? i didn't see a bunch of bodge wire or did i miss it?
you mean TURN UP THE SOUND! BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
go with the short headers on the pcb and stacking headers on the qtpy and the cut the stacking header pins in half to make them shorter. that should get you closer to the PCB without needing really long M3 stand offs.
kinda like with the tft featherwing, i really like it when you can squish pcb's together like pancakes.
yay keypad library! one of my favorite CircuitPython libraries
@haughty quiver most of the isomorphic key boards have 96 keys.
Also take a look at Linnsruments . They make a large isomorphic midi keyboard.
keypad library is great. all my future projects will be designed around it. it makes life sooo much easier.
Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen
Well met, @clever summit 😀
Evening mr. Callaway
I think you can still refer to it as isomorphic, but lean into it being radially isomorphic instead of grid isomorphic
Any plans to add a display for which chord your playing or leaving that to the midi software?
Put a gryo in it and rotation now lets you change root note
I'm tone deaf...
who's out here playing hockey?
❤️ polyphony, it's so satisfying.
chords for dummies, i need this in my life.
In jazz, you’re never more than a half-step from the perfect note.
there are some VST's that do chords but they're hard to configure, at least with ableton that i usually use.
I saw Kaki King do that in the Speigeltent some years back.
that's great!
Great advice from the jazz vocal instructor. I use the “say it, say it again, resolve it” technique a bunch when jamming. Sometimes on purpose.
What is the address of the wiki page about isomorpic keyboads
An isomorphic keyboard is a musical input device consisting of a two-dimensional grid of note-controlling elements (such as buttons or keys) on which any given sequence and/or combination of musical intervals has the "same shape" on the keyboard wherever it occurs – within a key, across keys, across octaves, and across tunings.
one "easy" thing would still be an on-startup long-press, goes into a "config" mode that lets you set one of 6 thing
if you designed the pcb just right you could create a music soccer ball
oh the motorised sliders on sides would be cool
John's quest to turn every rp2040 into a synth
Also how did you get the shape of the hex keycaps?
were the keycaps 3d printed?
Cool.
i think Noe actually 3D printed his.
noe 3d printed
Fascinating, love a good process guide, thanks
clear PETG would work well
the orange key caps i made for the step switches in PETG work very well.
PETG is far more durable than PLA if printed in a small layer height like .12
@haughty quiver You are seen. 😄
order enough stuff and you get a keeboar which has more than enough GPIO for a 60% keyboard in a matrix setup.
i love the pink PCB's
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone!
Wouldn't be right without big old D-cell batteries
Great Workshop, as always. 👍
Thanks @haughty quiver !
Thank you JP.
Thanks JP
Thanks @haughty quiver!
thanks all so much for hanging out!
@haughty quiver I just realized that if you take 6 equilateral triangles that have the length of the side that you want and put them together you should get the correct shape.
Good evening Foamyguy.
👋
Hola from 'rado ! 😄
@sand lotus if you’re interested in pursuing the transformer approach to that I2C audio coupling issue, let me know. I have an extra transformer that’s yours for the asking.
Think im going with the mp3 encoder and sdcard module. Think I can work with that.
Good afternoon
M7's just hit the store.
I was wondering why they removed the coupons. Makes sense now duh. Next gen MCU is here. Couldn't help it I checked out immediately and got that mp3 decoder too. They only made 100 M7's in the first batch so they're probably gonna go quick.
Congrats on not having an unknown interpreter anymore.
13 in stock
Yeah they're gonna sell out within the first hour.
It is OK to interrupt the stream to order yours...
I'll skip my turn, I want an iMX with USB Host.
Howdy 🇸🇪
Down to 10
Draw sends an ANSI clear to the terminal, perhaps?
Couldn't help it, got another.
Down to 9
Inventory is very accurate and real-time.
So that's always good to know.
Usually, if I do an order, I spend a long time searching for other to stuff to order simultaneously... and then the inventory goes to zero. The problem is that I try to put more stuff to reduce the cost of transport and import. I should prepare a wishlist for those occasion.
Maybe create the function for the green square and yield
That's really neat it's updating in your terminal window and with colors.
Wishlists are technically the best way to go. One click saved carts.
I still have cookie issues with Firefox where I have to log out and log in between PC's to get an updated cart. Wishlists avoid that issue.
sorry I came late, but you were looking for something to clear the terminal ? Did you try that ?
print("\033c")
oh it doesn't take \033
If you adjust the size of the terminal output, one print will fully replace the previous one.
everything in coding becomes a rabbit hole
for the matrix panels the dual framebuff does help sometimes.
probably has to do with their size though
if we go down a rabbit hole in a deep dive, are those sea rabbits ?
does it become a deeper dive ?
it's not displayio
sea rabbits sound adorable
only displayio keeps displays between loads, because of REPL
manatees are nicknamed sea cows. I feel like there's a play on words there for a Picow bell.

i've never heard of watership down before
that sounds adorable an entire society of rabbit culture lol. i'll put that on my read list.

that means one of the videos on the page has audio in it and aren't an animated gifs
i thought most of them got converted to animated gif
also at the bottom of the page there are related guides, maybe coming through one of them randomly?
It's the warm white, it's the only one out of all the colors that actually has audio embedded.

the one below lights up when it reaches the middle ?
sent website report feedback on it, taken care of.
oh yeah I noticed a video doing a buzz sound in the learn guides once, took notes even, I wanted to report that but I forgot... I also have issues with the animations playing even though it's disabled, and sometimes still playing when switching pages or something, it's weird, I don't know if it's a javascript dynamically switching pages like youtube does (instead of loading a new page from scratch) or a Firefox thing
cranking through the different color recordings they probably just forgot to mute the audio during export.
my firefox on ipad doesn't even load the images sometimes but could be ios related, it's really random and only happens like once a week.
1 Metro M7 left. 99 gone in 2 hours. good launch.
Oh wow it got late, thanks for the nice stream!
Thank you for the stream. See you tomorrow for coffee and code.
Getting started for the morning now. I've got some displayio things in the works today. You can follow along on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYAnfxmIy2Y or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch

Got my coffee, good morning. ☕
Could span them across multiple monitors?
Having multiple monitors with a gap makes no sense.
well if you only have windows on each monitor i guess that will work well.
but for spannnig not really
yeah that's true, i find myself using them for multiple windows. i used to span them for games but since i don't play games anymore spanning really isn't used much other than file compare... coincidentally enough.
ah i also use span for youtube video production
and sometimes OBS
exactly, i use the 2nd monitor for the preview now
but some audio or video programs require you to run everything in 1 program window so you have to span it
audio editing spanned is really nice too. ableton on 2 monitors is really nice. i had 3 monitors. 2 is nice, 3 better. 🙂
Audio DAWs, too. I went vertical and placed the slider console monitor above the track editing view.
that's another way to do it. i've noticed vertical setups are becoming more popular with monitor over monitor.
i'm just not a fan of the neck strain
That would be nice. However, they haven't had an in stock plugin tft featherwing for what seems like a year now.
I really loved the large TFT featherwing too. I can use it with any feather I want. The modularity seemed the better way to go instead of the pyportal.
You may want to add DISPLAY to this board: https://circuitpython.org/board/lolin_s2_pico/
There is a trick however... it is I2C and no board in CP has support.
That one is a built in display, it should have a DISPLAY support.
I mean build in screen are "always" SPI.
"128 x 32 SSD1306 OLED display internally connected to the same I2C bus as the external port, reset pin connected to GPIO18, I2C address 0x3C (not supported in CircuitPython firmware, require user code initialisation)"
as they should be, except in the rare case of parallel
M5 stacks are very popular and extremely modular. I've had my eye on them for a while, haven't gotten one yet.
I'm swimming in boards as it is already.
So that LOLIN board has no build-in support. It works, you just have to configure it in your Python code.
Pick an EYESPI screen, and a board you want to add that too. And try to create a new board with both.
I'm not sure if Adafruit's ever made something with built in I2C. It wouldn't make sense when SPI is available.
Yeah, I gave up because I could not copycat from some other board...
LOLIN has their own shop on Ali.
MacroPad: 128x64 SH1106 Monochrome OLED display - On high speed hardware SPI port for quick updates
Agreed, Aliexpress has a lot of downsides. Usually only go with something there if I'm desperate and can't get it in the US.
The marketplace is eh.. questionable sometimes. Helps to be experienced in electronics so you can better navigate around the junk.
I wonder if China is closer to EU than closer to USA???
I mean from a shipping point of view.
Takes approximately 28-31 days to arrive in Florida.
on avg
i think 8.0.5 beta?
i stopped at 8.0.4 beta before diving in 3d printing stuff.
and i'm finally after 3 months getting back into coding some CP again.
the 3D printing rabbit hole is deep
Are you talking about this Featherwing: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-oled-featherwing ???
Then I can follow you... I have one here.
I have this one https://www.adafruit.com/product/3651
the ILI 2.8" is the parallel one
the 3.5" is SPI
It should theoretically be possible to enable parallel on the 3.5" but I didn't want to risk the mod.
because they've been out of stock for like a year, if i smoke it there's no replacing it.
PyPortal seems parallel:
pylint inception.
yup, pyportal is parallel but not modular like the tft featherwings. modularity has its perks.
the tft featherwings were $5 more than the pyportal, expensive just for the screen. pyportal a much better value but not upgradable or modular.
no learn guide for the iMX yet, no pretty pins yet.
You are on the edge...
yes 🙂
it's got SPDIF audio
i'm looking for mp3 analog audio stuff, don't think it'll do it out of the box.
SPDIF to analog converter a thing?
it's a proprietary digital audio format created by sony/phillips.
most TV's and audio equipment have them now for digital audio. basically like I2S but at waaay higher sample rate capability above CD quality.
can't make an I2S to SPDIF translater for CP because of the proprietary format with licensing fees.
Found an old video the first time Lady Ada debuted the iMX 2 years ago. It's been a long time coming. Really excited.
Yeah I think it was one of the M7's, at least in the same family.
Teensy 4.1 uses the iMXRT1062 chip.
It's the 600mhz beast. Now I see why everyone was all over the Teensy's. I never got one. Had no idea.
Could have a 'direction'
and only check left, right, and forward
yeah
I remember when you could watch the progress of fill in MS Paint
I'm old
I am pretty sure I learned that at university... 30 years ago. 🙂
I finished high-school 40 years ago
Lines because it add "right" first?
That looks very similar to the way MS Paint did it.
One optimisation is to draw a line rather than individual pixel.
You don't put back in the list if it is already the right colour... because you painted it. So it is just a test.
Just because it's the right colour doesn't mean you are the one that made it that colour.
no but you should not paint beyond a barrier of the same colour (I believe)
Besides, you'd have to check it to know what colour it is.
So you only paint what was in the initial colour of the first pixel you were given...
You fill up to any colour that isn't the same as the original colour
So before adding anything to the "queue" of position to paint from, you check first if it is that initial colour.
Kind of the definition. You are checking to see whether it IS the initial colour which means you change it. If it is any other colour (including the new colour) then you don't change it.
PC locked up 😭
I was lost reading floodfill on wikipedia, and wondering why it is silent.
YT has a new link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxNJB9rCl54
Internet crash?
Can you say something unique to check if it is the right stream...
Had to refresh twitch.
OK
Need to ask a stream from @rapid hornet if you cannot make it Friday. 🙂
Well... I will also have 2 weeks of vacations, so anyway I will miss many streams.
Not meant to be for now. Thanks for hanging out folks
Thanks for streaming foamyguy. Better luck next time. 👍
Thanks for the stream(s) today.
Have a good one.
Yep seems to be locked up in the same fashion 😞. I'll have to try to get my environment sorted out
Warning: Compiling CP can crash your computer.
perhaps OBS streaming + approx. 1 million browser tabs and windows + Discord + YT playing music was a bit too much for it to do during the builds. I did end up getting successful builds for poth espressif and atmel ports now without anything else running.
Desk of Ladyada - More RP2040 Feather Smorgasbord & CAN boards https://youtu.be/gNG9r4eiEL4
This week we're sampling a whole bevy of RP2040 Feather 'Bones' boards - last week we did the EInk and RFM69 - this week we've got a CAN Bus and USB Host Feather. The DVI feather PCBs are on the way so soon we hope to test the first one of this series. We also wrapped up and ordered our CAN bus FeatherWing (from like 2020!) and a "CAN Pal'' whic...
Good evening.
Hi
Great timing, I’m making coffee for tomorrow ☕️
Good evening
yay #marchintosh !
Howdy folks
Now that's a long take on the quicktake 😄
Hi, everyone!
Cartoons don't die.
Penguin? Tux?
Mickey Mouse isn't dead! He lives right across the street from Adafruit.
Aspect ratio looks fine for us
yah, limor is viewing it on another monitor and forgot 🙂
🥫 🚌
if anyone here is on tumblr here is where we are trying out this series (#marchintosh) https://www.tumblr.com/adafruit
hi. I was gone but hopefully not forgotten!
"CAN bus"?
Does Adafruit have a buck converter that will take 24V in?
I really thought CANBus was 12V logic... does it run on multiple voltages?
CANbus works with strings, I see.
they have to be encoded with TWINE
@open girder : Why might I choose CANbus, even if I'm not connecting to a car?
FIRST Robotics uses it in their standard robots as well
it's a good bus and module protocol
Gives me ideas 🙂
That's why I was asking about 24V
must sleep, n8!
@noble grove Their UBEC takes up to 16V (I think it can take higher)... https://www.adafruit.com/product/1385
Question: @open girder Are people seeing products in the Raspberry Pi product like available at regular prices yet. I am seeing offers increase, but still priced unfairly (imo)
Datasheet says 4.75V to 23V
They (raspberry pi) did mention a price increase due to supply chain issues (small $5 I think)
AHHHH - A USB Host Bones! Yes!
Still seeing elevated prices, here. rpilocator.com still shows constrained supply.
Is there a rolling window on the 1 per?
Is there an updated ETA for the next AdaBox?
I never catch one when you have them. No idea why, I am pretty flakey and out trying to make some good happen in the world.
I'm sorry I asked PT! Just kidding. I agree and feel your pain
@clever eagle Here's a recent interview with Eben Upton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9vna9jao9I
Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi, interviewed on December 14 2022. Eben talks about supply pressures, Raspberry Pi availability in 2023, industrial Pi applications, his take on RISC-V, and when we may see a Raspberry Pi 5.
You can navigate the video using the chapters in the progress bar. The topic timestamps are also listed at the end of this d...
@noble grove should be soon 🙂 we're not able to get all the parts! and we announced we're resuming in 2023 !
@clever eagle liz from raspberry pi was just at adafruit..
I have waited YEARS for that board 🙂 Thank you, @proper trench!
AWESOME. That foretells happy times PT
HID Host allows for USB Filters (Gamepad -> Mouse, etc. etc.)
Reupping
@clever eagle we had kid, pictured there. ..
OMG love that USB A RGB jack
Other than tester stuff what would be a normal use for why someone might want a USB host capability?
Okie dokie, I got an A+ so I could relieve my 3B+ for test jig duty
Mouser allows you to back order RPI
Found one. TSR12450 Product ID: 1065 will take up to 32V in.
@open girder : Any idea which particular parts are constrained for Raspberry Pi? Broadcom CPUs?
@sand lotus It is very powerful for Assistive Technology. It allows all kinds of cool stuff like removing tremors on mice, keyboard remapping, HID Device swapping, etc.
I lost one of my 3B+, and of my Pi Zero 1, and one Pi Zero W2. I am so scatterbrained. I'm sure I deployed them and lost them buried under newer shiny objects
@slow spire not sure, but i think on some of the podcast(s), etc, they talk about that
I backordered 3 CM4 modules. Estimated ship date? Oct 2nd 🙂
that's good to know thanks @pearl shoal
Gives me time to finish my carrier board
I can wait until they are available through ethical seller like @open girder
re: mouser (and others) some of the ETAs are 2024, but they do not do the limit of 1 per customer, so could be longer
I am going to have to switch to other Linux SBC I think
the shortage will be over, the universe is about 14+ billion years old, this is a small amount of time
Questions: @open girder Do you recommend another product like Rock or Banana Pi?
maybe beaglebone, but all depends
It's gotta be just the scammers, probably hard to ignore them but please try. Don't let them ruffle your beautiful feathers.
yeah looked at those. Seem solid
(hah, that was kiddo if ya heard that, she hangs out while we do the show(s))
👶 Yes we heard 🙂
800*480 is 384,000 pixels. yeah that's a lot to drive.
Any news on the Doom project? https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/24/is-this-one-of-the-smallest-playable-doom-devices/
@open girder : Eben said recently that we shouldn't expect Pi 5 this year. I'm currently playing with a Radxa Rock 5B based on Rockchip RK3588 – 2 to 10 times faster than Pi 4. Anyone at Adafruit playing with anything from Orange Pi, Radxa, Khadas, or others?
Just have so much time and success and knowhow built up on the wonderful Raspberry Pi products since about 2016 and would love to preserve that knowledge
Hi, baby!
I watch all the YT vids of folks running those. My believe is they all have some challenges getting a rock solid Linux system running.
But I will give one a try this week. I need to understsnd my options
Any chance of your Mini Color TFT with Joystick FeatherWing getting back in stock or being redone. It's been out of stock for years.
Does the eyespi connector include pins for touch or would that be a separate thing if it's a touch display?
This is true. They're certainly not supported as well or as popular as the Pi ecosystem. But with no Pis in stock at reasonable prices, that part is kins of moot.
These would be dotclock displays? First time I heard that term was in KMatch's hack tablet give away.
Yeah @slow spire I'm shopping for a < $100 Linux SBC as we speak
Now that I look, I'm seeing lots of Pi alternatives with Blinka support, so that's good! https://circuitpython.org/blinka
@cinder wind gifted ya horse
16 bit is still plenty to make pretty GUI's. i loaded up a 24 bit image and I couldn't even tell the difference. 16 bit is plenty for small displays no problem.
Question: why do they only use two bits for Blue? Is the human eye less sensitive there?
@clever eagle I got my Rock 5B from Ameridroid (California based).
woohoo! (or yeehaww!)
Blinka now supports 101 boards 😉
Will Blinka work on a Linux desktop?
@noble grove Which Linux?
Thank you again for the USB Host design (sorry to be a nudge)
Yep, typical human eye is less sensitive to blue.
I've used Blinka with many Linuxes and my M1/ M1 Pro/M2 Pro Macs
God bless Lady Ada, Mr Ada, and Baby Ada ❤️
Bye
most sensitive to green, hence 5/6/5
Thank you AdaFam
Thanks @open girder and good night. 🌕
Thanks, @open girder family!
Thanks Fruits
bye and thanks
I heart the SE 30!
Congratulations again. Parenthood is most awesome aspect of my life.
Pork chops n' applesauce
i didn't even know the next mouse was a thing. and all the neat retro stuff phil shows I've never seen. super interesting stuff please keep that kind of thing coming.
Thanks @open girder
Not atm but thinking about starting again soon
@rapid hornet I still go back from time to time to watch your Pico deep dive. Tons of good info in there. Found an old video of you playing with the iMX from a year ago that's about to become more relevant very soon.
😄 Maybe I should watch my old iMX videos
that feeling when I am trying to understand a topic and the search results lead me to me from a few years prior.
hello all
Good afternoon.
hi!
Just made it. Afternoon All
good afternoon
👋
👋
good afternoon folks
👋
I like this version.
ada FROO dot eye tee
is the cable the same as Raspberry camera ???
unfortunately, no, I think. RasPi camera cables are 15-pin or 22-pin and EyeSPI cable is 18-pin
Ok looks like they are out
I like the ribbon cables for 3D printed enclosures. Much easier to work with.
I don't think so Starman, seems like it's still in stock.
~~ even tho Adafruit is out of the 18-pin FPC cable, I think these cables will also work: https://amzn.to/3YxfgFM ~~ nevermind this is 1.0mm pitch and I think EYESPI is 0.5mm pitch
Our most recent display breakouts have come with a new feature: an 18-pin "EYE SPI" standard FPC connector with flip-top connector. This is intended to be a sort-of ...
looks like the 18 pin is still in stock to me.
maybe they're out of a certain length of the 18 pin?
all the cables I try show out of stock
ohhh i was looking at the breakout board
i knew either the breakout boards or the cables might be hard to find when the new eyespi displays start selling so i got a couple breakout boards and cables ahead of time. 😉
that was months ago though, i had nothing to do with them being out of stock today.
Thanks JP!
Thanks @haughty quiver
thx jp!
Thanks JP, my wallet doesn't thank you, but my brain does. ❤️ ppotw
Try AliExpress for cables. Just make sure you specify length, pin count, pin spacing, and contact sides.
thanks everyone have a good day

good shoe holder for people up north. mud/snow shoe rack. not as useful in FL, up north i could see that being very useful.
hello DJDevon
Hello Janisku7
I go with Polymaker but have been using more Amazon Basics lately because of Pedro's recommendation.
That shoe rack is reminiscent of Falcon 9's grid fins...
I printed up an adapter for my soldering stand so I can use it for my Raspberry Pi Microscope camera.
I think it has a small Nike logo kinda put into the shoe rack.
Thanks @rocky reef & @hard hollow . See you all tonight.

@open girder What would the M7 be used for? is it like a new Arduino?
@foggy python It's in Arduino form factor, and supports CircuitPython out of the box. @open girder Does the M7 support Arduino, yet?
Arduino just launched their new Giga too but that's like $70 and the Metro M7 more like a slimmed down Giga for $30.
@sand lotus would the M7 work nicely for either of the NFC readers labled as PN532?
I don't see why not. As long as you have UART for the FTDI stuff. Lady Ada would be a better person to answer that one. They'll answer your questions at the end of the live stream. 😉
It's been a while since I've actually used FTDI.
Actually that's a good question to ask.
Question: Can you still use FTDI stuff with all of the newer M4, M7, ESP32's, and NRF adafruit boards?
love all the work with pio USB Host on RP2040, thanks @open girder!
@foggy python It should work with this Adafruit PN532 breakout board, but I haven't tried it, of course. https://www.adafruit.com/product/364
If I remember correctly the PN532 NFC reader will do I2C or SPI which is a much better way to go... in which case pretty much any microcontroller will work with it.
I2C and SPI are very common protocols today
Awesome ya I have been sticking around to hopefully get help understanding all that stuff. I saw on one of the PN532 boards it mentioned a FTDI friend but one didnt, so I am a little confused.
@slow spire Do you know the difference between the board you listed and
Question for the show
I few weeks ago you showed that you went out to experience Chinese new year, and you also showed that you were working on some new projects that weekend… how do you find “balance “ in your time is it challenging? @open girder
It's always good to be inclusive for accessibility especially as an electronics company. Accessibility is getting a really nice push and more popularity for support in 2022/2023, love to see it.
late but here. Bought the m7 thingy
Yeah, @foggy python – that's the shield form factor, and since the product guide mentions using it with an M0 Metro, it should work with the new M7.
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pn532-rfid-nfc/python-circuitpython
Yes CircuitPython was big attraction!
I so want to buy the M7, but I'm going to let others go first, since I have a backlog of projects. Y'all go for it!
yep I got it!
Out of curiosity, is there a timeline for the Nightjar - Analog Electronic Birdsong Synthesizer by Kelly Heaton https://www.adafruit.com/product/5654 ? The bird nerd I am is very excited for when parts and everything align for this product
same here. But didn't stop me
Thank you!
Yeah, but I know for a fact that Ladyada is extremely prolific, and us mere mortals would not see this as "balanced".
@open girder Question: are you switching to KiCad from Eagle? (I'm finally starting the process)
Anyone buying a new SBC due to lack of RPi? Which ones
Yay, I've very glad to hear that and also completely understand the pacing. I'm just excited to see it and hear it more. Thank you!
I have a M7 in my cart but I am still a little lost on the difference between both. I get one sits on top of the M7 board itself vs connecting through a bread board. But is there any difference in capability or use case? I am new to this and am trying to wrap my head around it all. I plan on using NTAG 213.
Thanks @open girder and good night. 🌖
thank you!
thank you for another great show.

thank you!
👋
Thanks. Good to see you all. Bye @open girder
Bye!
<@&669538345994682378> Thanks Baby Ada's parents!!!!!
Thanks @open girder - Have a great night all
Thanks all, have a great rest of the week!
so excited for the iMX, no idea what i'm going to do with it yet but i'll figure something out. 🙂
@foggy python I think that they are pretty identical, functionally. I might choose the breakout, for more flexibility in where I put components. I might choose the shield if I am going to dedicate this board to plugging into an Arduino UNO board like the M7. But the breakout will work more easily with more boards.
Thanks, @open girder Family!
@foggy python I'd read through some of the PN532 project guides in the Adafruit Learning System, for ideas on what you can build, and for inspiration:
https://learn.adafruit.com/products/364/guides
@slow spire gotcha so it sounds like the shield version is the option I should choose. Are there any other additional components / chips I should of would need to write to NFC tags with the M7 and shield?
ya I read those. I was surprised that there were not more recent guides
@foggy python I'd check out the main guide for the shield or breakout to make sure you buy compatible NFC/RFID/MiFare/etc tags. The PN532 works with a lot of tags, but not every tag.
@foggy python What's your experience level with projects like this?
The reason I ask is that there is some soldering for both PN532 boards.
none except one college project where I programmed an arduino on tinkercad but this was years ago and dont remember much.
Cool!
Well, you're going to have fun with this project. It's kind of magic to read NFC/RFID.
I do have a soldering station
Sweet!
@foggy python This is an excellent refresher on soldering that I watch every so often.
https://learn.adafruit.com/collins-lab-soldering
@foggy python I believe the M7 comes with headers already soldered on. On the PN532 shield, you'll need to solder on headers (a 36-pin strip of male header is included with the shield).
@foggy python When I am planning a new project, I make a little checklist of things I'll need, and steps I'll take, along with links to the stuff I'm reading in preparation.
I try to keep my first build as simple as possible – can I build it in a day or a weekend? – otherwise, if it's more complicated than that, I'll never finish my first build. 😄
Hard part is that I am so new to this space that that I am not sure what is needed or recommended. I thought this project would be simple.
I'm a maker like you; I'm not an Adafruit employee. But people like me are here day and night, so don't be shy about asking a question here, no matter how simple. This is a very friendly, helpful community.
your most memorable mistake as a maker is that first "simple" project that turned into a black hole. it's where you learn the most 🙂
I remember my first time trying to design an electronics project
@foggy python A good spot to post your progress and questions as you get started would be #help-with-projects .
We're all rooting for ya!
@foggy python What are you making with the PN532? Can you tell us about what your goal is with the project?
@slow spire I plan on making a custom jewelry piece with an open back that would hold an NTAG 213 NFC chip encased in resin that would hold a website URL.
Nice!
It will look amazing when it is done, it will be a gift for my SO. I will make sure to post pictures when it is done.
@foggy python There are some pre-made rings in the store in various sizes:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/2802
@foggy python That might help you get started quickly.
@foggy python And you may have already seen this, but there is a ring project learn guide you might adapt.
https://learn.adafruit.com/3d-printed-rfid-nfc-rings
It's also possible to program NFC tags using some iPhones and/or Android phones. But the PN532 boards are more fun, and can be used in projects to do more cool things, and gain a more complete understanding of RFID/NFC.
The Ruiz Brothers used this tiny tag for that project:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/2800
Ya I saw those. I am just trying to make sure I buy the correct parts so I can get the NFC board working properly.
Cool. I'm logging off for now, @foggy python . Welcome to the community!
ty for all the info and chatting!
