I used actual mud. Just got some from fine mud from outside, mixed it with some PVA glue, water, and acrylic paints. Then just added a couple more layers of washes, and dry brushing.

Another partially restored shell done in requested paint shade to provide an example for a person that put a deposit down for a shell to use reenacting.
EDIT: This has a medium/Heavy aluminum oxide texturing in the paint to eliminate glare.

This one was supposed to be a repair depot replica with a Tri Color scheme but the person saw the pic of the shell after cool down from paint oven and told me "Don't touch it, when can I get it?" LOL

My mix for standard Field Grey Dark with heavy texturing of aluminum oxide. There were about a dozen different shades of the German Field Grey Dark and 5 different factories making helmets, so shades, sheen and texturing vary. This one is spoken for. I try to replicate the exact process of painting and texturing, as close as possible, only oil based paint/enamel and what was used for texturing in the paint.
Absolutely NO water based Acrylics used ever. My shells will not peel and will age just like the original paint used. As one of the people said of my restorations, "I went to scratch it with the bottom of my Bic Lighter and I was disappointed, I thought it scratched very easily, only to see that it was a 1/16 of and inch ground off of my lighter, I wiped what came off the lighter off with my thumb and there was no scratch"
My paint chips, never peels and that's exactly how it's suppose to be.

Straight out of the paint oven after cool down. This shell was repaired, rust removed, painted to German factory specs with aluminum oxide texturing. Then after that paint cured I mixed some Tan color (oil based), painted waited for that to cure and then added the green splotches. I copied this from a picture of Normandy era invasion (field painted) camouflage helmet seen on this German soldier.

What are all of these helmets for? Reenacting?

That and for people that don't want to spend $3000.00 or more USD for a WW2 German combat shell with camouflage. My shells are painted with nothing but oil based enamels for factory coat with aluminum oxide for texturing. And only oil based paints and sand for texturing if they get a camouflage paint scheme on top of the factory standard paint. None of that cheap Acrylic Spray Can paint, I paint them as close to exactly how they were painted and use materials as close as possible to how they were done during the war. They're German M40/55 Finnish contract helmets, I bring them to bare metal, remove all rust. They will last out in the field for reenacting and at least another 100 years on a shelf if bought for display or collection.

Thank you.!!! The pictures I posted are German produced M40/55 Helmets that were sold to Finland on contract. I also do repro helmets for people with larger sized heads above 57cm in circumference, I strip the cheap acrylic paint off of those and paint them correctly with oil based enamels and aluminum oxide texture and cure them in a paint oven as well, I also paint the camouflage patterns on after the factory paint if requested. Both the M40/55 helmets and Repros are field ready or for display/collection and they cost a magnitude less than a German Heer/Wehrmacht combat helmet. I'm not trying to advertise them here, that would probably against the rules, my pics were meant as an example of Stahlhelms restored and painted correctly and as authentic as possible will commercially available products. You can PM if you have any additional questions on the process of restoration and paint, if you like. I will be away from my PC for a few hours, I'm stripping a shell as we speak, it's currently sitting in the solution I use to strip paint.

The overwhelming, vast majority have no Factory & Size Stamp or Lot Number stamp in the shells. It was said that some of them MIGHT be sterilized wartime shells but I have found only one shell that had stamps that would show (slightly) through paint and only two others that had what appear to have been sandblasted/sterilized and only left a partial stamp, very shallow and not visible after painting. This is out of of over 2 dozen shells, I always check for stamps, just in case I might get lucky but I don't expect it at all. I think I have owned at least 35 shells and sold at least half of that number. I will see if I can lay them out on an old painting tarp and take a picture of what I have left, I believe I have 9 or 10 painted and a few not done. I plan on keeping those few (3), as good examples of untouched Finnish contract M40/55 helmets, for posterity. I believe the vast majorty of them are postwar production, that's my opinion.

Another restoration and paint, borrowed the mid summer colors directly from the original issued cloth camouflage helmet covers issued to the Wehrmacht/Heer. I did a little touch up after this pic, before I put it in the paint oven for an hour.

No I had I bought a kit and I had to make it all myself except I 3D printing the final pieces

Made the netting from bandage gauge made the sandbags from putty, made the figure by combining Body parts from different kits and sanding and shaving to them fit

I had to paint and weather it, the camo pattern is also my an exact copy of the tank from the game I took pictures and sized located how to paint the camo on

white, then black over where you think will need fake shadowing, then your top coat which would be like your camouflaged green or whatever your going to pick but be careful not to apply to much paint over the white and black or you will ruin the desired effect. so slowly build up the paint to your desire

if you're actually interested btw, tilt shift is an optical affect produced by specialist lenses. Whilst it can be replicated in a digital space such as unreal engine or maya or whatever else, it produces more "organic" results from a practical process. It's why cinema still uses anamorphic lenses after nearly 100 years(I'd have to fact check some dates on that one tbh) and why some people can feel the difference between a 35mm film shot, a medium or large format film shot and a digital film shot. Some people with enough experience in the space can even tell the difference between digital full frame and digital medium format

But more importantly, look at where our supply trucks went. They were never destroyed by the enemy.

Sometimes they leave the supply trucks alone if they don't have any way to explode them. I saw that last match in Foy where they would leave it alone maybe to not expose their position. I think those garrison placements are the reason the match was lost. Open fields and roads are a huge no no for garrison placements. Proper garrison placement should be outside the point while in or near a trench line with no line of sight. Forests are good too if you can find a sand bag trench. Really, those garrisons is what done it. Games can go south really quick if those aren't placed properly.

These are in no way perfect trench positions and I don't claim they are. These are just a rough idea on where garrisons should go. I try to put them in or near trench lines off the main roads. In a pinch, you can place a garrison somewhere, but try to do it behind some sort of structure.
