Toggle fury shark override should be the option rather than forcing their version of "firefighter outfit" down your throat.

humble mural
#

That is fair. Maybe there could be levels of toggle? Like certain items or overrides are registered as overly flashy, and they just get disabled for public viewing by default or on a medium toggle, but you can still see it for yourself locally privately or there's another toggle option to see it. Maybe a lot of players have this concern after all

primal bluff
#

I would say that physical items should never be keepsakeable, so you actually have to clear overrides or toggle it to see what people actually wear. Those physical items can be like snowman outfit or so

cold oasis
#

the keepsake system should be removed

primal bluff
#

I agree that some outfits should be removed. Give more toggles.

shy path
cold oasis
#

the only reason theyre keeping it atm is because it generates money for them

shy path
#

However I have black pants keepsaked because there isn't many options for black pants (which one could say might be a cosmetic issue, not a keepsake issue)

cold oasis
#

copy wows system. when you equip an item, you gain the appearance of it forever, but you can never trade it to another player again. but also, delete all of the ugly outfits so the game doesnt look like a fortnite lobby.

versed grail
#

personally, I still think that is cosmetic rewards and mechanical rewards both have value, then there's value in using both

primal bluff
#

For example : Snowman outfit should not be an override but physical item instead. So if you want to wear some cool costume it will be an actual physical item and so the need to clear override or toggle it.

I think keepsakes could stay somehow, like squirrle ears are nice to have keepsaked for example. Ps. Note : some items like squirrel ears don't give a copy/clone like some other items do.

Skilling outfits for like mining, shark, ... should be changed (there are some nice art I've seen the last couple of days (like Legendarts). Not just the dev team but also the community have plenty of great artists.

Wardrobe itself : make constistency, if you search 'shark' you see multiple shark plushies > just make it one item with recolour option (like chic scarf).

cold oasis
#

except its unlimited and not pay to unlock

primal bluff

These three for example : the ogre one looks too big and so not grounded imo, but I get if people say that its actually fitting the game (medieval, ogre, ..).

The vitality one should be removed imo

the deathless regent looks too heavy too imo but somehow connects to the world (necromancer-like), maybe adjust it

I like Keepsake system because I really am attached to those vampiric boots, the only black ones with heels. They add Elegance to every outfit

And I love Being able to have a classic cute outfit instead of whatever ridiculous looking armor I'm forced to wear that's most efficient for battling. It allows me to for example, dress up as a runecrafter when doing magic damage instead of whatever level gear Which honestly looks great and very intimidating but kind of breaks my immersion for just being a typical Mage or something. I want my character to be a high level runecrafter or wizard from the Wizards Tower not a magic force of nature or somebody who's seen the mushroom beyond or aligned with one of the deities ooc or something

The thing that can be improved about Keepsake system is the MTX

Oo I see v

primal bluff
# shy path What makes squirrel ears different?

I mean squirrle ears for example should stay a physical item but it fits the world and let say that keepsake keys stay I would say that this one should stay keepsakeable.

Some physical items should be keepsakeable and some don't.

I hope this is clear? 🙂

Though id not be against them like adding a little folder that contains them

Same can be said about certain pets, if you search 'raven' you see 7 ravens, it should be like Mune > 1 raven with skin/transmog options.

One of the many wonders of a 25 year old game, the coding is marvelously inconsistent and incredibly intertwined in ways that are not obvious

humble mural
#

I like Vitality one, but I definitely am okay with it being private. like to me it just looks like I'm from The Cosmic plane and it's one of those fun silly things for a silly mood because they don't actually allow us to have completely faithful versions of non-human species but like I think it's totally fair for it to be a private thing, but I wouldn't want it to be removed. I think it's something you actually pay runecoins for

#

Like I only bring that outfit out, for some laughs while doing some idle skilling. I wouldn't actually want it to ruin anyone's day so I be perfectly fine with it just being private

#

But I actually did pay runecoins for the privilege of having a silly outfit to take out occasionally for some laughs while idling so it being removed just seems kind of not reasonable

#

I agree. and esp with the current Wave of Gamers having even less attention span and time from what I can tell compared to when I was a kid. old Tutorial island really presented the mechanics excellently in a very non-overwhelming, non-busy way.

I was a little excited in the past to get more fellow players back when I was more invested, and the efforts to get people to try out the game in the past were successful, it sounded like people really did try and install the game but it sounded like most of them just tried and left because the tutorial turned them off the game and it was quite a shame.

#

And because it's real money involved, refunding is sensitive too. It's real money that could have gone into a subscription so

rose thorn
#

With that in mind, we will shuffle this first Regrounding Items update later into the year, perhaps to be rolled into its previously planned second iteration – no specific date is currently locked in.

That means the Regrounding Items update **will not launch on the 23rd of February as previously planned**, but it does allow us to continue to iterate on changes needed.

Skin selection is nice and not new - remember Felix? They have many skins selectable via their menu. Same as the halo/bunny ear skilling pets and the anima pets (Shattered Worlds). I think Diddymus has the same thing, altho' not in game so can't check for sure.
That's a pet which is different from an item but just bringing up that it's not unprecedented to have diff. skins for things rather than entirely separate entries.

#

Also - on the plushie thought... I think it'd be cute if at some point, plush fury shark, plush nature's sentinel, or plush gemstone golems became a thing as a little homage to what once was and a nod to the history of the game. Either as an item you can carry around like existing plushies, or as a furniture item introduced alongside or after the construction update, or just placed as a bit of world decoration at a place that makes sense. It's silly, but might fit better than a wearable outfit and be a nice thing to stumble into

also, jagex stated in their first blog what their intentions were with player identity

As long as they're not cutting the update, and not considering keeping elite skilling outfits looking the same, I'm fine with delay for a higher quality.

#

Thankfully thats what they indicate. Not doing it at all would be a massive misstep.

If it means we get peak like arch outfits I'm happy

There's a bit more info in the early game rebalance post too, not just on the reddit. Not sure if it's already been shared here (prob's has) but I didn't see it on a quick scroll through.

They delayed the update

they still sound adamant in making sweeping changes, hope they stick to their guns.

I'm excited to see what they've been cooking for the unrevealed outfits (thieving etc), as well as what alterations (if any) are made to the initial concepts that were shown. ^^

glass vessel
#

I think it's good that they'll roll this update probably alongside a bigger one together with customisables
Make actual skilling outfits look more grounded and based on real outfits is good 👍 they're doing progress on that, they're on the right track for it to look good, it's just the overt removal of things that people got attached to that's ticking people off the most

As for customisables, I agree that super oversized or overtly particled armour pieces need to be adjusted. But if people wanna look like a bird, or dragon, or frog or whatever, why not right. Some people just wanna look a lil silly. If it's not in an all too intrusive way, I dont think it forms a major problem

In general tho, looking at how other MMORPGs like WoW or Final Fantasy XIV handle glamours / outfits will help give ideas on how to proceed. Most people make sick armour combos, other use cozy/casual wear, and a small minority just wants to be silly. But that's an accepted part culturally

cold oasis
#

the art style of older outfits doesnt fit the future of rs

glass vessel
#

That I agree with! Visual inconsistency in artstyle is not a good thing
But they can be reworked to fit the design philosophy for outfits going forward, retroactively.
If they

  • update the graphical textures
  • reduce oversized outfits
  • reduce particle effects
on the most garish looks, it would solve a lot of issues already

Shave off the extremes on the visual side of things, while leaving the option to players to be a lil silly billy

cold oasis
#

i hope the delay gives them the time needed to do all of that

vivid oak

The div outfit vibe is not there. 10/10 please redesign.
Fishing is just a recolor of fish flingers outfit, lazy work, please redesign.
RC is good.
Mining is meh, would like something better but it's better than the first 2.

Why is the runecrafting / mining recolours good but the others aren't?

I think the best solution was changing them to fit the skill or skill cape colors

little bit of a wig out, but ive seen this referenced sooo many times here. Runescape is not a medieval themed fantasy.

its in the early renaissance era - the cannons, ships, plate armors, telescopes, gnome gliders, etc... the list goes on and on. which puts RS in the 1300's to the 1600's thematically.

They arent changing skilling outfits now? Like its delayed?

And then they did exactly that but people got mad :(

dusty sage
#

for skilling outfits, they really need to look at the balance between the regular and elite outfits and the desired unlock periods.

too close of an unlock and itd be pointless to have the non elite outfits - too late and its pointless to have elite outfits...

from there, the outfits should not look anything like each other. the archeology outfits are a good example tbh

I feel like that's where it started, but it's evolved. Renaissance is just a subset of the gamefeel nowadays. We have magics (standard/ancient/lunar, necromancy, godsy stuff) and science (invention), distant past (archaeology, anachronia, gear from previous ages), and different very separate civilisations (mazcab, zolarea, elves, vyres, ...) and they're all RuneScape. There are things outside of that though, despite it being so wide nowadays and regrounding may mean tightening the scope a bit too whilst still keeping things 'scapey. Not saying that everything is good, just that I don't think the "it's not renaissance-era, so it's not RS" thing fits so well.

lament dock
#

I believe people should be allowed the freedom to express themselves. This right needs to be respected if Jagex plans to do any regrounding whatsoever. Im glad they delayed this and are giving themselves more time to cook, because it means they have more time to possibly do the right thing, and put what people are attached to into cosmetic overrides. There is a reason why older gens of Jag have used the 'depreciate and discontinue' route: While it creates FOMO, it also avoids pushback from the people who spent their time garnering the cosmetics.

Tthat is how I have seen things work with designing in many MMOs. And cosmetic pushes are pretty much the industry norm these days, and relatively peaceful compared to some practices. Like TH. And ptw MTX.

dusty sage
# woeful ether I feel like that's where it started, but it's evolved. Renaissance is just a sub...

I wasn’t meaning to say it could only be “this” - just counter pointing out to people that a medieval theme is not what rs is.

Renaissance covers a wide area of thematic content - which invention does fit in, along with heightened interest in architecture and archeology.

Rs is a high fantasy game… that’s why I keep referencing “renaissance fantasy”… so, yea obviously magic…

lucid bloom

There aren't a lot of firearm weapons in RS3. There are hand cannons. There are fixed devices which aren't exactly weapons. And there are imcando pistols. You have the multi cannons.

Yup. No reason we can't have flintlock and blunderbuss guns. More gun-based weapons and cosmetics would be neat.

jaunty relic
#

And lasers can be implemented via "magic". What's medieval about falling magma or controlling tidal waves? If they wanted to make a medieval game, we remove magic as a skill.

dusty sage
#

🙄 my point - is the game’s theme… like character designs, building designs, city designs, weapon / armor designs, the overall creative feel of the game… is that of renaissance high fantasy.

Rs’ first through third age would be more aptly placed as “medieval high fantasy”

torn creek
#

a lot of medieval games have magic as part of its theme. there area also lasers in rs3 already

disagree.. if i paid money for it, it should remain as it is paid for... oh wait... remembers premier artifact, it is just a business, and nothing is actually ours - it all belongs to Jagex we just waste our time.

Jagex be Jagex'ing...

That being said, I have never heard (from long term 20+ year players) so much about quitting runescape, until recently. I have heard it a ton. This bringing in new blood, isn't working. What it is doing, is pissing off a lot of long time players who have stuck through all of the shenanigans (EOC, Squeal, all their missteps, etc. The mistakes and sometimes what the shareholders dictate that has been truly predatory and malicious). Changing RS3 based off of OSRS input, hoping to bring in OSRS folks to RS3.. isn't working. Different games... Leave it as such.

The cosmetic theme has evolved over the years. To say NOW, that it is a mistake, it should have been considered decades ago. The RS we play and continue to spend our valuable time on, is what it is. Don't take things away without proper compensastion for runecoins, loyalty points or bonds that have been spent. It isn't good business practice to kick your historically paying customers. They won't stick around to be kicked more.

For the record, I pay for membership, have since classic. I am not a bond spender and I have some cosmetics, but I know people who love fashionscape. There is a RolePlaying world: World 42. People still roleplay. I know a few who are heavily into that and the cosmetics help them (including and especially the flaming head and slayer helms/masks).

cold oasis

There were all flavours of golden barrows (and war priest + god swords), added as part of [[Balthazar's Big Raffle]] which was basically a big raffle, tickets as a login bonus, where you could pick what prize to try for.

I think they're pretty cool despite never using them (big part is that they're an item, not an override = keepsake key costs); whether or not they make a return in some fashion... 🤷 I kinda hope so but also wouldn't lose any sleep if they don't.

rugged tapir
#

Toggles now exist and things can only get better because of them for people that don't like certain cosmetics.

With them, it is completely unnecessary to delete items and punish the people who like them. All this would do is harm player numbers in a moment when they are needed the most.

clever crow
#

Toggle being a decent solution has been refuted multiple times already.

rugged tapir
#

No it hasn't

wheat raptor
#

The problem is that most of the things this blog is tackling are items that are kept as physical items hence wearable even with toggles off
However I do support leaving most of them to overrides and some of them reworked than absolutely wiped

cold oasis
#

if something doesnt fit in the natural game world, a toggle should not enable it to exist

clever crow
#

Overrides are part of the next regrouding update, like @versed grail said "if you must curate your experience for a cohesive world you do not HAVE a cohesive world". If your solution for keeping your items on the list Jagex decided are not fitting the game or are obnoxious is to : disable cosmetics for everyone that dont want to see them, you are out of your mind, you are asking everyone to lose cosmetics to cater to you.

rugged tapir
cold oasis
#

except it doesnt by jagexs own admission

clever crow
#

We have multiple cosmetics in the game that fit the game, asking everyone to play without to them to people can keep the cosmetics that doesnt fit Runescape is not a valid option

cold oasis
#

the people in charge of the billion dollar company are telling you they dont like a lot of outfits and its ruining their vision. why are you saying theyre wrong?

clever crow
#

You can find another option but this one is not possible.

rugged tapir
clever crow
#

This solution is selfish and will ruin the game for a lot of people.

cold oasis
#

in an ideal world, i think they should be working towards the cosmetic toggle being removed once everything is in place.

rugged tapir
cold oasis
#

good thing we dont need to convince you then lol

clever crow
#

A good solution is : keep these as overrides no one else than the wearer can see even with cosmetics toggle on. Or create 2 worlds called Obnoxious items on

rugged tapir
cold oasis
#

and you stick your fingers in your ears whenever someone says something you dont agree with

cold oasis
clever crow
#

Then we agree on a solution

#

Because in that particular solution you dont ask thousand of people to turn off their cosmetics only for a couple items so its better

rugged tapir
clever crow
#

On others ? I mean if you add an option specifically for it sure

rugged tapir
clever crow
#

But its hard to know what they are able to do with toggles really, right now all we have is all or nothing, they can expand them a bit but we dont know where they can go with it

rugged tapir
#

I mean they released them quite quickly. A lot of the exsiting physical items can become overrides too via keepsake keys. Idk the details but I'm sure they can do something.

Once everything they have all cosmetics which are too large or too immersion breaking together,

They could just put all of these in a toggle option, could be the "large and non-human" toggle idk could use a better name. It could also include wings and anything that makes players look like animals or creatures.

Then players could just have this one toggle on and see all other types of cosmetics or whatever.

remote adder
#

The problem you would have is who would decide what is large, obnoxious, non-human, etc. That is a subjective opinion and if Jagex is the one calling the shots, you're bound to have someone that disagrees with their decision.

#

Take a look at TF2 where Valve decides what is Halloween restricted or not, and there are cosmetics the community generally agrees with what should be the opposite of what Valve has set.

#

Regarding lucky items, i like my lucky chaotics and it saves me the 1-2m dung coins. i see both sides of it but it was a cool thing and hope they can find a way to add it to bosses. maybe as a spare drop or something?
its sad to see the same topic looping over the next day, im glad jagex is going back to gain feedback on how to go about it. IMO tackle the bigger items and the biggest culprits first not the .0001% items. as they arent really that intrusive as people make them out to be. i agree with @wheat raptor if the issue is physical then give us over-rides rather than just... wiping them from people as thats a big issue for a list of people. i dont see jagex removing like.. 20% of the cosmetics in the game because "they dont fit" while some of them... actually fit when you actually look into the logic that jagex was looking. not one person gave me a reason other than "cuz i dont like it" to justify why something was up on the chop block.

and what classifies as "fitting the game world" and how many items will be removed because of it. Like i said prior, lets see some good numbers, lets see some statistics. Hey, 50% of playres use this outfit at least once a week and we believe it to be intrusive. i rarely see people using any of the items that were on the chopping block, but give 1 person a ring of trees and they can cause x10 worse "immersion breaking" imo.

"the solution is selfish and will ruin the game for a lot of people" goes both ways, its selfish to want the stuff removed because 5 people dont like it, way more selfish than people who want the things they paid premiere club/premiere tokens/or runecoins for. the solution seems selfish asf "oh cuz i personally dont like 5 outfits 10 outfits that 5 people use i deem them as bad and i dont wanna see em"
we already got the cosmetic toggle. ez

also, how many "large items cosmetics" are in the game vs how often are they used.

#

IMO the best solutions :

  1. explain WHAT the issue is in detail and show why its being targeted , make them a cosmetic over-ride or downsize the cosmetic a little bit so it isnt as bad. Example, whats the issue with a flaming skull when a water battlestaff/staff is worse VFX side by side. The dragon thing and one mod mentioned a like.. ogre set? i can see why some people find it anoying. But are we talkin like.. world 2 has 30 people rocking this outfit every day? someone mentioned the nox scythe having the pukies, make that a toggle on/off . same with many staffs i think we can have a toggle on/off feature. or a setting that "reduce vfx for weapons/wings/etc"

  2. for the skill outfits, give us more customization. maybe color changes. or like "evolutions" to the oufit where when your skill levels you unlock more "evolutions" to it and gives you varying looks for varying skill levels (upto 120/200m?!) i think that can be REALLY cool. and let it color change just like we have with the 25th anniversary scarf/current skillsets/some cosmetic armours. i saw some GREAT suggestions, make it a community event, lots of people love runescape, and i think that can be a great opportunity.

  3. i think jagex needs to do a poll/survey ingame, because thats how most people contribute. I HEARD they did in the past, but if your trying to target people it shouldnt be based on 1 year ago it should be based on the data from past and current players. see what bothers people/why, and make a video showing "this cosmetic bad, this is why, and this is our solution" and make another blog about it/video association.

Step 2 I do like the idea of, akin to pet metamorphosis in osrs. Different resources used on the outfit give you different colour schemes.
Step 3 would be way too much work for them to come up with all the various fixes for dozens if not hundreds of different pieces of gear

Can “you can’t tell Jagex they’re wrong” stop being repeated over and over by the same people, please? It’s been days.

1. It’s fallacious to appeal to authority. If authority stood against your opinion, then you wouldn’t appeal to it. It’s as flimsy as an argument can be. Any update should stand on merit under player scrutiny.

2. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to shut down discussion. There’s a myriad of proposals in this thread for Jagex to explore now that they’re taking more time. If they were only interested in affirmations, these discussion threads would not exist.

3. They postponed outfit re-grounding for “later into the year”, “perhaps” rolling it into Summer’s re-grounding without providing a date. If you appeal to authority, this should give you pause. Jagex may revise their approach, or they may not. But they are considering feedback here.

Different opinions don’t bother me when shared earnestly. But what does bother me is when people try and discourage others from sharing their voice. Somebody might see it and decide it’s not worth the hassle to give their two cents. Nothing is set in stone. Let’s not discourage each other by appealing to an outcome that hasn’t arrived yet.

Right, and that’s an opinion they can have. Losing paid items/cosmetics in gaming is typical for bans or closing business, but it’s extremely uncommon to have them removed otherwise.

#

It’s commonly understood that a game studio owns accounts, branding, and everything under the game code. It may discourage marketplace sales if players learned Jagex was fine revoking or altering cosmetics without making the consumer whole. It may open consumers up to hesitancy, as it would for me.

cold oasis

i still think this is the strongest stance on the matter and im confident that any of the opposing opinions havent been able to successfully challenge their position.

I did reply to that actually. Have cosmetics toggled off by default. Then new players don’t have to curate anything for cohesion if obtrusive items are made into overrides. “Obtrusion” would be opt-in.

Never did I think Jagex was going to be taking away cosmetics for being too silly. The game has jokes built into some of the quests that reference this. I'm deeply disappointed with the way this is being handled.

#

The new outfits look super lazy too. I don't want my outfit when I'm doing routine activities to look super basic. A fisherman's shirt to replace a shark outfit is a serious downgrade, and goes against the ingrained silliness that the game has had for the >20 years I've been playing.

vapid viper

sorry, I cant find any thing about this but i've heard my octopus backpack that ive had since 2017 is being removed? will there be a reimbursement of sorts as it was a treasure hunter item, or is this just a "were removing it and we dont care what you have to say on the matter" kind of deal. I'm not sure how it doesn't aesthetically fit in the game when there's like 39 different types of flashing and pulsing wings on my screen. i've had this back pack longer than 3 of my kids have been alive..

lament dock

Fortunately, those cosmetics are not being removed immediately. They delayed them from next week to this summer to rethink their regrounding approach due to alot of pushback. So you will, for now, get to keep them.

Also note, when they do get to the update there is now a chance they may have the time to turn them into cosmetic overrides instead, or do something else, and tweak them so they dont have to remove them. So there is that potential option now.

vapid viper
#

Well that's fortunate. I'm also just reading about the Lucky Chaotic items as well. It would be a shame to see an entire category of items that i've been collecting for the last 20 years playing to disappear without notice, detailed explanation aside from the few sentences in the blog and lastly compensation. . infact, this is the first time I've ever reached out outside of the game in 2 decades. hopefully there's a middle ground

Create three toggle groups: no cosmetics, all cosmetics, immersion breaking cosmetics.

From there, compile a list and put up pole voting on offending items at jagex’s discretion.

Move all cosmetic items into overrides.

Tone down / remove particle effects. They should create a creative guideline - where only x type items can have particle effects. As most of the egregious instances are where every equitable slot has particle effects.

It's a longterm goal to equilibrate the graphical look of older equipment with current day guidelines, as they've stated themselves they wanna do
Jagex can decide which content is irrelevant and doesn't require graphical updates, or (using their own market data) can pinpoint which cosmetics are currently used a lot or not and allocate resources as they see fit

I can see them removing cosmetic outfits if:

  • they are too hard to graphically update ( way too much time and effort)
  • there is no previous basis in the world of Gielenor or wider universe present ingame for these outfits to exist

So the zodiac outfit one could argue could be removed, but smth like that ogre outfit someone had a posted couple days ago, which looks really oversized to the regular playermodel, could be a case of resizing and updating textures

cold oasis
