To me, the most impressive base is one for a mon that is not really known for varied and dynamic angles and that breathes new life and potential into it.

And while there is a couple of problems with the Wingull, it certainly accomplishes that for a mon often than not little remembered outside of Mr. Briney's "Peeko" or constant pestering encounters on the various routes throughout Hoenn. I'd say it's certainly deserving of atleast some recognition

I think it's about finding a balance. A lot of judges think that most gamefreak bases aren't actually the best, so we want bases to look nicer - without going overboard. If it sounds contradictory it's probably because it is

There is no "default", since the sprite players see is randomized among all 'main' sprites, so the Yanmega u see might not be what others see
There are also many sprites that are kinda cut off because they couldn't fit the whole sprite in, mostly Kaijus specifically, so the sprite might look a little... boxed in

Meh, for judges, i always assume the "safest" option is to follow gen 5 art style.
However in the end it's all a flip of a coin. Since there's several judges, it's hard to cater to all of their tastes.
And if a single judge doesn't like your sprite, it can affect your overall score

They are more "static" in their poses, but watching them in a 3D environment was something i always wanted as a kid.

I believe the distinction was clearer in the past, where the term Legendary was referred to something described as real, just either unproven or undiscovered. Examples were things like the City of Atlantis, City of Gold, or in the case of animals, Big Foot, Giant Squids, Megalodon, etc
Where as mythical is essentially described or proven as fictional (E.g. Phoenix, Minotaur, Demons, etc)
So in the 1990s, Pokemon used those terms similarly, where Legendary Pokemon are so rare, u only encounter 1 per playthrough, or none at all if u didn't have a guide
As for mythical, u couldn't get them at all except through events, so for most players, they essentially didn't exist
Lorewise it makes sense, Giant Squids were thought to be legends as well until we scientifically encountered them, it's the same for legendary Pokemon
Mythical is... less fitting, but i guess they needed a different word to seperate Legendary mons that were unobtainable

I just wanna beat my record for average score which is currently 8.5. I don't think it will happen this time because I keep making new technical errors when agonizing over and "fixing" old ones.

Main criticism: fix this one mistake or too ambitious. There's always something to learn from the winning sprites which cleverly balance cleanliness and interesting details, so I gotta take what I can.

I think you're too hung up on that waifu comment.
You just need to be aware that the judges are as vanilla as they come... most of them at least
So the most important thing to note is whether your fusion conveys both materials used without seeming too farfetch'd, or including unnecessary components that don't belong to either
Ofc that's only when going for events. For regular sprites, do what u want

This is my personal opinion but I think there are styles that are more emersion breaking and some that are less so. If a sprite looks like it belongs into a final fantasy game because it is 300% rendered to exellence, it is quite emersion breaking to me. If a sprite looks like it walked out of a idk Madoka Magica (insert any distinct anime style, really) it would also be emersion breaking. There are some that are closer to what the pokemon style also is going for so they are less heavily judged in that regard. In the end it is of course also a very subjective matter. One person might not mind while others do.
