Oh hey I'm on break again and I might have figured out Kartana's invasive species parallel. With the design being obviously taking from the pun blade of grass I looked into invasive grasses on Hawaii and there's one called Pampas grass, whose genus literally translates to "cutter" in part because the leaves are sharp enough to injure native birds who try to eat it. It's also highly flammable, which goes well with the dual weakness to fire grass-steel gives

It was also used for construction of kites in China, and has a very pale white color. It's not a perfect one to one obvious match, but it fits well enough I'd accept it.
