Zorua is quite a popular mon and this concept is similar to Sif from Dark Souls who is also pretty popular. So it may have been voted over your Pawniard (a less popular Pokemon) for these reasons

Well, if we can talk about sprites that are out of the contest in isolation... I'd say a big part of it for me was that I couldn't connect the dots between the fused mons and your idea. Yamask is a spirit holding a death mask, so it's really swinging in the other direction tonally for the fusion to yield a child playing at being a hero, in my opinion.

The top 3 of each bracket advance to the quarter-finals, which consists of 4 brackets of 6 entries each. The winners of the 4 quarters go to the finals, while the second and third place go to the semifinals.

The semifinals are 2 brackets of 4 entries each. The winners will go join the finals, meaning that the final round is between 6 entries. @plucky arch

The weedle/sunkern is adorable. Some of it just comes down to the experience people have making sprites. I try and use the contest as learning opportunities, look at what makes some more popular than others. Well highly detailed sprites are one thing, giving them emotions/personalities also helps make sprites more popular. The average spriter learns how to blend two sprites together without many changes to pose/expression. The next step is to learn how to change poses/expressions while making sure the viewer can still tell what two Pokemon will fuse.

Personally I use M+KB and up until recently just MS Paint. Tbh I still use MS Paint for a majority of the work since I'm most familiar with it. Sprite work is a lot less forgiving towards this than other stuff since you can go pixel by pixel and it'll just be slow but doable.

usually at the start of a new month, on of the sprite managers will collect everything in sprite gallery and put it into the next sprite pack. but the sprite manager who does it is taking a well deserved break, so we can expect the next pack in august

typically, if there's a sprite submitted for a pokemon that already has a sprite (or if i assume 2+ are submitted in the same month) they go to 'main sprite voting', where people vote for what will be the main sprite, and what will be the alternative sprites you can access via the pokedex.

all sprites in #sprite-gallery are ones that have been submitted to the game. you can check https://if.daena.me/ to see if a fusion has been done, or search the discord (eg. search mew/bulbasaur). it's ok to submit sprites for a fusion that already has a sprite
