Honestly, most of the sprites didn't even need that much vfx. Some sprites used these like sprite backgrounds and made me feel like I was seeing gacha character pngs. I cannot imagine some of them to look natural as Pokémon sprites

Especially when, repeating my previous statement, I got feedback for "AA" because this could make the sprite blurry and was literally 9 pixels while other sprites became hard to see with a whole background behind them.
(and no Katten, I like to take feedback and I accept it if I feel this can be constructive for me and my sprite, but that time I didn't see how that feedback helped the sprite to look better. I was just pointing out a previous experience that I lived )

cast light if the pokemon has a light source

different shade style
(too many colors or just a different way to shade)

Some like casting light can make the sprite better actually, even if it's not made in Pokémon sprites because of the official 15 color limit limitation. I don't see it not different than making coloured outlines in Reuniclus sprites.
For the other two, I agree. I even saw a sprite in the contest that has a lot of dithering and the shading was in the wrong direction

I did think the Onix sprite had a good change of winning when i saw it. One thing i thought about this contest is that anyone using Deoxys first was at a disadvantage because the base deoxys 2 color combination is surprisingly unappealing, and a lot of entries had it, which made looking at them pretty repetitive (for no fault of their own)

That said, this is the one i liked most:

some very appealing shapes and silhouette, moderate but cool sfx, great storytelling and a fun concept conserving all of Deoxys' core elements (chest crystal, scary alien look, tentacles)

I mean, all my critiques are because some people, especially non-spriters/non-designers, tend to vote the thing that looks more visual instead of voting a design in a design contest. Of course I'm prioritizing that, but I'm not attacking anyone's work in particular. Although it's true that I consider most vfx in this contest were a bit forced just to make them more visual, I consider most of the finalists were worth winners

It's like when it's two contests in a row that I was told that I don't have chances to win because I'm not using a popular Pokémon, like if it wouldn't matter how good could a design will be if it's not Gardevoir or something like that

Of course all this is my opinion. But in summary, what I mean is that a fusion contest should mean that people should evaluate the fusion, and not anything else

I wouldn't have guessed the contest winner was either an onix or a deoxys fusion (without contemplating the sprite to try and figure it out more). It just didn't feel like a fusion of onix and deoxys. The rendering of course is top of the line and it's a worthy sprite and even stylistically isn't far off of gen 5/pokemon.

If i may correct you, only two of each person actually will get voted on in the "actual" brackets, and my poll is already over. The one's that dont go through to the next brackets dont get voted on anymore, meaning that discussing them is no longer barred. After all, the choice awards are to be made by kiwi alone

It messes up the polls because it leads to polling bias. If you can see what other people have voted for, it can subconciously influence your decision on what to vote for - you might feel like you should vote for the same sprites because you don't want to be the odd one out or vote for a different sprite because the one you like already has a lot of votes

that's why they're anonymous; that way you're not influenced by anyone else and the results are accurate to what sprites are the most popular
