- Pokemon placement was rough. Many of the new mons were stuck to Kanto or super late game (Ursamajor/luna in mount silver for example), Magcargo and Houndoom were both in Kanto too
- Gym Leaders rarely get to use new mons. Bugsy for example only has an ariados, flying one has no Hoot-Hoot or Noctowl.
- A lot of new mons kinda just suck. Unown is a weak gimmick, many are just so slow, Ledian is infamously bad to the point where people believe it was a mistake. Scizor is trade evo so rarely do you get to run it.
- Everyone's team is kind of just set: A bunch of people were just running the Starter, Ampharos, Kenya/Fearow, Togipi line, and Gyrados.

The game "opens" up to let you do gyms in any order but there's so scaling so levels are just all over the place; you have 3 gyms at level 30 and generally you're going to be doing the east side before going west too.

Also: Red is only mainly hard because he was so high leveled and the game makes grinding a pain in the rear end.
