The game runs on a program called Poke Essentials that allows for the addition of Pokémon up to Gen 7. That version of Poke Essentials is unable to add Pokémon beyond that normally, and attempts to directly code them in have ended in game crashes. And we can't update to a newer version of Poke Essentials that does allow Gen 8+ Pokémon without rewriting a lot of the code

If you have seen even a single custom or base sprite for any pokemon:
Do this first: navigate to the help man in the Pokecenter and go to Sprite Options -> Clear Sprite Cache.
Otherwise, your game is fine and working properly! The game can only download a limited number of sprites while playing before going on cooldown, you have simply hit the download cap for now.
If you still feel like your sprites are not downloading, ensure that you have your "download data" option enabled and your device is connected to the internet.
If you have not seen even a single sprite for any pokemon:
Your game is not working properly!
Step 1. Ensure you're on the latest version (check your title screen and compare with #downloads)
Step 2. Ensure you have a good internet connection.
Step 3. Check your options in a save, turn on "download data" if it was turned off.
Step 4. If that did not fix it: head to a pokecenter > talk to the man in a black suit with sunglasses and navigate to Sprite Settings and select "Reset sprite cache" & "Reset displayed alt sprites".
Step 5. If that did not fix it, delete any game or launcher folders and do a full reinstall.
Step 6. After reinstalling, repeat step 4.

You receive an egg for every legend and can CHOOSE not to use them
