Essentials can handle Gen IX mechanics, it's when you increase the number of fusions that things are more likely to get a bit hazier. Plus the fact that certain additional forms require multiple Pokédex slots, so rather than 809 going up to Melmetal, you'll have a bunch of extra slots that then have their own fusions. 😅

There's a difference between moves that can be easily coded like Scorching Sands, which is basically just a slightly weaker Scald) and more complex moves like No Retreat that combine multiple existing effects and whatnot. 😂

Frog has confirmed that we have enough space to add in 100 generations of pokemon (since the limit before was around 251,000 slots since that was when he hard-coded each fusion) with the new way the fusions work, the game currently only takes up 515 slots (that is the 501 mons plus all the triple fusions)

So he has more than enough slots to add the rest of gens 4-7. Currently he isn't doing that because

Time. Engagement. Game Design. Real Life.

However the issue of adding them isn't that is an impossibility, its just a matter of when Frog is available to add them. He normally adds them when the total # of fusions in the game has ~50% of its fusions sprited or major milestones. But that definitely is pushed back currently due to working on Hoenn.

So even if Azelf and the other trio doesn't get added till like 10 years down teh line, they are for sure coming into the game.
