Surprisingly, if we’re going mechanically, basculin has more potential than luvdisc: luvdisc only brings good speed and only water type with access to heart stamp, meanwhile basculin brings good attack AND speed, on top of opening potential with nearly every ability it gets between both forms

Luvdisc is generally an alright Pokemon design wise. Simple, but good. Simple can be better than overcomplicated. It's why a lot of people miss older generation design philosophy compared to newer gens. They were a lot less over designed.

Bruxish is just the biggest example of overdesigned.

Oh it absolutely did. Aside from bruxish and some other overdesigned pokemon, the Pokemon designs were phenomenal in gen 7. I'd say gen 8 was it's lowest in my eyes.

Most of the Pokemon were just...uninteresting. especially the starters. They didn't just feel generic, they didn't feel like pokemon. Except for rillaboom. They're great.
