I'd rather pair it with Scizor or another bug type personally. Because being a rock type is pain, and the Steel/Fire overall has much worse stats and dies to Earthquake.

Rock/Bug is odd because while it has only a few weaknesses, it only has a few resistances too.

#

Wow, this one's tricky, there really isn't a cut and dry best option in the game with all the minimum stats you want

#

Like, you want at least 60 speed and 80 defensive stats

What would be better actually, using belly drum to get shields down, or spend a few turns spamming def+ moves till you get to half normally?

cedar fjord
#

I mean GF clearly thinks its part of the balance for rock to be the best attacking type and have exclusively risky attacks

#

Same insane reason they almost exclusively make slow and defensive ice types

green yew
#

Fighting actually and Ground actually has the most coverage.

cedar fjord
#

Rock is statistically the best and the only type that has more things weak to it than things that resist or are immune

#

In practice because Pokemon distribution isn't even it isn't actually the best

green yew
#

Fighting hits five different types, so does Ground.
They both even have really strong moves, in Earthquake and Close Combat.

cedar fjord
#

Yeah and both have a type thats immune

green yew
#

Rock is basically Ice but worse.

crystal cosmos
cedar fjord
#

Rock has nothing immune to it

green yew
#

Ice also hits four types, simlar to Rock, but actually has a good movepool.

green yew
cedar fjord
#

And like I said GF gives different types different identities

green yew
#

Anyways, cheating aside, like I said, Rock is basically worse Ice.

cedar fjord
#

And the identity for Rock is clearly 'inaccurate' which is pretty shit

#

Much like how electric types have terrible physical moves

green yew
#

They have a similar identity in "everything hates me, I hit a lot of things", but Rock has terrible accuracy. That and Rock has a problem in the modern generation where ground, fighting, and steel are everywhere.

cedar fjord
#

I mean yeah but thats been an issue since Gen 2

#

GF don't care. And Ice in general is significantly worse off

green yew
#

Ice actually got a few good offensive 'mon in recent times

crystal cosmos
#

The last non-signature 100% rock type move introduced into the game was Smack Down 💀

green yew
cedar fjord
#

Doesn't really matter when 90% of ice types are crippled by being slow walls

green yew

crystal cosmos
cedar fjord

At least most rock types are weirdly fast

green yew
crystal cosmos
cedar fjord
#

And it finally got a good physical ice stab

#

That also clear hazards. Gen 9 was good eating for Weavile

eager quarry
#

Ice spinner is the terrain, not hazards

crystal cosmos
#

And Triple Axel was better for it anyway, which it doesn’t get anymore

green yew
# cedar fjord At least most rock types are weirdly fast

The only rock types at 110 speed or above are Ogerpone Cornerstone(which is probably the worst form in my opinion), Lycanrock/Dusk, Diancie-Mega, Aerodactyl/Mega, Archeops, Arceus(this is cheating though), and Minior(who has relatively low offensive stats and is very squishy),

crystal cosmos
#

Well the one thing rock has for it is that it gets a 50% sp.def boost in sandstorm

green yew
cedar fjord
#

Tbf I didn't mean in general. I meant most of them were weirdly fast for their defensive stats

#

Compared to ice types who are usually incredibly slow

crystal cosmos
#

At least they got a buff in Snow this Gen so they get a 50% def boost while in it. A9T with Snow Warning and Aurora Veil is a nasty combo

green yew
#

They get murked by a Greninja, probably nuked by Tapu Koko, Iron Valiant with Speed+ Quark,-
Arceus Ice, Chien-Pao, Iron Bundle, Weavile for above 120 speed tier.
Frosslass for 110 speed tier, but eh, low offensive stats sadly(tfw they're also my favorite ice type).

#

Baxcalibur is pretty slow at 87 speed but managed to get itself banned out of singles OU if that means anything

crystal cosmos
green yew
#

I'm pretty sure Scale Shot + Dragon Dance was what pushed it over the edge. Scale Shot was also why Koraidon got banned out of NDU.

prisma willow
#

Is Rock a bad type or does it just have terrible Pokemon that have stats that run counter to how the type is coded? Like Ice which has that problem while also just being a bad type.

#

Because I'm not sure how you can fix rock without fixing the attacks and the Pokemon unlike Ice which can be helped by giving it resistances.

prisma willow
cinder oasis
coral solar
#

Rock is a lot like Ice in that it’s a very good offensive type, but a shit defensive type. Unlike Ice though, most Rock types have a defensive-oriented stat spread, which is… usually counterproductive.

cinder oasis
#

Rock type has the worst pokemon out of any typing in the game

coral solar
#

That’s something I know many people would hard argue with, but I digress

cinder oasis
coral solar
#

I figured, but I have no horse in that race either way

cinder oasis
#

Bug type is the only one I’d say you can debate is worse than rock

#

Also that rock types have terrible moves as well

coral solar
#

The bug typing itself is fine, it’s just mostly mons with bad stat totals because it was meant to be a joke type until Gen 5

cinder oasis
#

Bug type is the worst type in the game

coral solar
#

Aight then lol

cedar fjord
#

Bug type is a pretty absurdly good defensive typing and a good chunk of the best Pokemon in the game have been Bug type since Gen IV

bitter comet
#

I love the electric tarantula so much

hushed mantle
#

I like how bug is one of the worst types competitively but it’s arguably the type with the hardest designs

cedar fjord
#

i literally do not think its one of the worst types competititively. Like it has a pretty insane defensive profile with resistances to ground and fighting and couples with Steel for one of the more broken dual typings in the game. Bug/Steel is on a bunch of Pokemon and several of them have been competitive mainstays for years

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

and that isn't even getting into like Volcarona, Ribombee or Scolipede who have all been meta warping at various points

#

there are more bug types in high level competition teams than there are of several other typings

cinder oasis
#

Volcarona, Ribombee and scolipede are good but there’s a lot of pokemon who are bigger menaces than them

cedar fjord
#

Volcarona has been a top tier OU threat since its inception in singles and literally got banned to ubers this gen

cinder oasis
#

Wobbufet has been in Ubers twice and is a menace

cedar fjord
#

ok, I'm not saying Wobbuffet is bad? I'm saying that calling Bug types the worst competitive type is absurd when there are a lot of bug types that have centralized the metagame over the years

#

like Scizor in Gen IV/V being on literally 70% of all teams

cinder oasis
#

Bug type is the worst typing in the game, doesn’t mean bug pokemon can’t be good

cedar fjord
#

its absolutely not the worst typing in the game. Worst typing is ice because its literally only negative to have ice typing

#

while bug typing provides many benefits including fighting and ground resistance

cinder oasis
#

Ice provides more value then bug types

cedar fjord
#

like....

#

Like there are several pokemon who have a dominant Tera type into bug. No one tera types to ice

cinder oasis
#

Ground, dragon, flying and grass

cedar fjord
#

that's not a value to ice typing, that's a value to ice moves

#

I was under the impression Regileki mostly did Tera-Dark

cinder oasis
#

Huh?

cedar fjord
#

I haven't seen anyone go Tera-Ice with them

steep glen
#

Ice typing as a lot of bad match ups

cinder oasis
cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

Bug hitting Dark is still incredibly worthwhile considering how abundant dark types are

cinder oasis
#

Ice hitting ground and dragon types is incredibly valuable considering how abundant both these typings are

cedar fjord
#

ok, I am not disputing that. It still is a shitty type for a Pokemon to have while Bug is a good defensive typing for a lot of mons

cinder oasis
#

Bug types are bad because it is the worst offensive type in the game and is alright defensively

cedar fjord
#

its good defensively and its not the worst offensive type in the game, that's Normal

#

especially with the loss of Return

cinder oasis
#

Second worse out of 18 is not good

cedar fjord
#

I think Steel is also worse than Bug

cinder oasis
#

Bro what 💀

mellow estuary
#

Bug is worse than ice

cedar fjord
#

offensively, to be clear

mellow estuary
#

Steel is one of the best types tf

cinder oasis
#

It hits 3 more types neutrally and hits fairy super effectively

mellow estuary
#

It's not gen6 anymore, fairy doesn't need to resist bug game freak!!!

#

That was an insult to injury fr

cedar fjord
#

looking at total resists/immunities/etc in a vaccuum doesn't show the full picture. Steel is bad offensively because it so heavily overlaps with fighting offensively

#

also Water is just absolutely busted

cinder oasis
#

It’s mediocre offence is more than made up for with its 10 resistances

cedar fjord
#

I was only talking about offense!

mellow estuary
#

Feel like steel should be weak to electric

cinder oasis
#

It’s still better than bug offensively

cedar fjord
#

Bug has more synergistic coverage with the normal coverage moves

cinder oasis
mellow estuary
#

The resistances make sense at least

cedar fjord
#

not really

mellow estuary
#

Errr yeah, it's steel

cedar fjord
#

which is somehow weak to... ground and fighting

mellow estuary
#

Steel is meant to be durable

tranquil path
#

i mean they at least removed its resist to ghost and dark so its not super busted, its not a powerhouse offensively so the resists are fine

cedar fjord
#

because punching steel is definitely a thing that makes sense

mellow estuary
#

It's pokemon, everyone is superhuman

cedar fjord
#

ok then why isn't normal super-effective

mellow estuary
#

Cause normal is normal

cinder oasis
#

Because normal is normal

mellow estuary
#

Fighting is offensive use

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

typings are completely arbitrary and you could realistically re-arrange the type chart in any way and it would make about as much sense as it does now

mellow estuary
#

Ah yes, grass can beat fire

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

like Electricity in real life should work almost exactly the opposite as how it does in Pokemon

#

Ground should be weak, Flying immune, Grass weak

mellow estuary
#

Electric and water should be super effective against eachother but that's just buffing water

cedar fjord
#

the way its set up right now makes like negative sense if you know how electricity works. Water should resist it

mellow estuary
#

How would ground be weak to electricity

cedar fjord
#

Water is a terrible conductor

#

why wouldn't ground be weak to electricity? One of the most famous parts of electricity is that it is able to literally blow holes in the ground and create glass from sand

cinder oasis
#

That’s heat

mellow estuary
#

...

cedar fjord
#

... from the lightning

mellow estuary
#

Blows holes in the ground???

cedar fjord
#

also you need to be grounded to complete a circuit

mellow estuary
#

Pretty sure the whole thing with lighting is the heat and the actual shock

hollow quest
#

i mean yeah it can do things to the ground but electricity generally dissipates into the ground

cedar fjord
#

and lets not pretend heat is somehow exclusive to a single element considering we have no fewer than 5 based around it

#

or are we also collapsing the type chart

#

When electricity dissapates into the ground it usually does some serious burn damage

hollow quest
#

not in most cases

cedar fjord
#

like that's the whole reason its dangerous

cinder oasis
hollow quest
#

i mean yeah, if you get a giant lightning bolt to hit, but otherwise it just quietly dissipates

cedar fjord
#

well that would be true if an 'electric cloud' could exist

#

i mean Electricity in Pokemon is exclusively shooting giant lightning bolts

hollow quest
#

just keep in mind pokemon is a not a game with especially great logic

cedar fjord
#

right that's my point

#

most of the type chart is arbitrary, we've just interalized it

cinder oasis
#

That’s why ice should be super effective against fire

hollow quest
#

however, most the type combos do have some valid reasoning behind them, it just doesn't always line up well

cedar fjord
#

not really

#

like why are Rock and Ground separate? Why can rocks hit flying but not ground?

hollow quest
#

because the ground doesn't fly, the rocks do

cedar fjord
#

why the heck is Dragon only super-effective against dragon

#

why is ghost good against ghost

#

why can you poison a ghost or a rock but something made of metal is a step too far

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

why does normal exist

hollow quest
#

like when's the last time you threw like dirt and had it actually do much damage

cedar fjord
#

why the hell is fighting good against steel or ice?

#

why can you bite a ghost but not punch it

hollow quest
#

scrappy heehee

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

ok then why does anything resist fighting

stone cliff
hollow quest
#

because you can't fight a ghost normally

cedar fjord
#

I can squish bugs a lot easier than punch ice apart but Machamp sure as heck can't

cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

.... yes

cinder oasis
#

So you want me to fly up to them and punch them in the face?

cedar fjord
#

if they resist it you have to have hit them

stone cliff
cedar fjord
#

otherwise they'd be immune

white meadow
cinder oasis
cedar fjord
#

or ... cold? Or fairies?

white meadow
hollow quest
#

well usually they aren't flying that high in the games (or at all), so they'd be harder to hit but not impossible

cedar fjord
#

point is a lot of those are completely arbitrary

cinder oasis
hollow quest
#

i think more of them make sense than don't

cedar fjord
#

I mean if I'm fighting it and it comes to attack me? yes

white meadow
hollow quest
#

you're just cherry picking the more questionable ones

cedar fjord
#

I mean I listed like a dozen

cedar fjord
#

and its not like it was exhaustive

cinder oasis
hollow quest
#

game freak don't like guns gentlyholds

cedar fjord
#

I mean that makes as much sense as the current explanations

white meadow
cinder oasis
#

Ice should be weak to electric since lightning bolts produce heat

cedar fjord
#

why does being evil make you immune to psychic powers

eager jungle
cinder oasis
#

Ghost should be super effective because normal is scared of Ghosts

hollow quest
#

yeah but they can rarely actually hurt them

cedar fjord
#

actually why is steel resistant to psychic powers considering we based Gen 1 Pokemon on Uri Geller, famous for bending steel with his mind

eager jungle
cinder oasis
#

Water should be weak to bugs because bugs drink water

hollow quest
#

everything drinks water

cinder oasis
eager jungle
hollow quest
#

i mean animals obviously...

cedar fjord
#

a pretty large minority of Pokemon aren't based on animals

eager jungle
hollow quest
#

the vast majority

eager jungle
#

"Kangaroo rats, according to scientists, are the only animals that can exist without water. According to the findings, they do not have any water in their bodies for any of their digestive functions. Kangaroo rats can survive in deserts without ever drinking."

cinder oasis
#

Psychic type should be strong against grass type because you can mindbend the grass types

hollow quest
#

i'm talkin about real animals here, because we're trying to relate this stuff to realism

cedar fjord
#

Pokemon is a world where you can shrink god into a ball you put in your pocket before sending it to be digitized into your PC

hollow quest
#

there's like one animal and a few microbes that maybe don't need it, no need to correct over that

cedar fjord
#

realism went out the door a long, long time ago

eager jungle
# hollow quest i'm talkin about real animals here, because we're trying to relate this stuff to...

Kangaroo rats, small mostly nocturnal rodents of genus Dipodomys, are native to arid areas of western North America. The common name derives from their bipedal form. They hop in a manner similar to the much larger kangaroo, but developed this mode of locomotion independently, like several other clades of rodents (e.g. dipodids and hopping mice).

i feel like ghost types aren't really ghosts, as stupid as that sound

since they can reproduce with non ghosts i feel like they are still alive, they just have ghost-like properties

so they resists poison but aren't immune because they are just a little dead, not fully (?

meager python
#

Really just making ice resist SOMETHING would make it way better

prisma willow
#

This was stemming from a discussion of how to buff ice so it isn't the worst defensive type in the game

meager python
#

Literally the worst defensive type

pale flame
#

What does rock even resist? Normal and bug and flying?

prisma willow
#

Ice only resists itself.

meager python
#

Ice ONLY resists ice…

pale flame
#

Personally I think ice should resist

Water
Grass
Flying

At minimum

meager python
#

I was so excited for hisuin avalugg until I learned it was ice rock

pale flame
#

And had paper thin defenses

meager python
#

It has a better stat block to :(

meager python
prisma willow

Hm, it would be nice to add another type that resists electric due to it being a fairly common attacking type.

#

And barely anything resists water.

pale flame

meager python

Lapras

pale flame
prisma willow
#

That's a credit to the pokemon and not the type. Weavile is very fast and Lapras is part water.

dense inlet
meager python
#

Avalugg isnt that bad now with teratype because it can start get resist these mediocre special moves like hp fire

#

So adding more resists to ice would be broken

prisma willow
#

Ah yes, in order for ice types to be good they need to not be ice types.

pale flame
meager python
pale flame
#

Sturdy is what makes avalugg usable XD

dense inlet
#

i think glastrier trick room was a thing in gen8 for a while

pale flame
#

So was Regigigas.

meager python
#

But in singles its usable because it is the biggest defensive wall in the game

prisma willow
#

Like... What. That's proving my point. Ice typing is such a detriment that one needs a generation gimmick in order to remove the typing from ice pokemon to make them viable.

meager python
prisma willow
#

That's just saying ice types would be good if they weren't ice types.

pale flame
#

It should have either fire, rock, or Steel removed as a weakness.

meager python
pale flame
#

The issue with rock types is that they often have a secondary ground type.

meager python
#

Getting rid of its steel and rock would be good

pale flame
#

Or some other type that gives it a crippling quad weakness

lament tundra
#

Why is ice weak to rock anyway? If ice gets in the cracks of a rock, it breaks it apart.

meager python
#

Because monkey brain, rock break ice

lament tundra
#

Rock also break skin

pale flame
meager python
#

Rock can solve lots of issue if you hit it against something enough

lament tundra
#

But normal is not weak to rock

pale flame
meager python
pale flame
#

Normal is a balanced type. It has one weakness, one immunity, and hits nothing super effectively.

prisma willow
#

The whole talk about buffing ice by giving it resistances because despite it being a great offensive type, it has absolutely no resistances so it becomes a type people have to work around instead of work with. Coupled with how Gamefreak keeps making slow tanks for a type that again, has no resistances and 4 weaknesses, which is contradictory thinking.

pale flame
#

Aurora Veil is your best option as an ice type, but it pretty much guarantees you a bad entry matchup

This was also a part of a greater discussion of how to buff weak types.

No NSFW names/avatars, no NSFW conversations, no suggestive emotes, no sexualizing Pokémon or other people, and absolutely no mentions of anything horny whatsoever, even as a joke. This also means no edgy jokes that could appear to be a mask for something serious, such as self harm or suicide jokes.
