SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in Sonar. Simply click on your devices in the Mixer and open the Device Manager in Sonar.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same Device Manager menu. Simply drag and drop to set the order of devices.

I can move apps from "Game" to "Chat" as an example in windows sound controls. Im certain i used to see the apps at one point, but cant pinpoint when or what that made them disapear. In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

3. If you are having issues with step 2 or step 3 above, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

If you see the "Sonar did not allow this app to change outputs" error, then step 1 above did not work, and you may need to do step 2 or step 3 to route your audio.

Hello Guys! I posted a feature request for sonar to decrease music volume when detecting voice. Have any of you ever wanted to listen to music while chatting with someone on Discord, Teams, etc.? On discord we have music bots (at least last I heard) but for other voip calls we don't have this feature. Why not something integrated into the sound mixer?

I have my headset higher in the priority list than my speaker. So that when I turn my headset on, it will auto switch to it.

Recently this behavior no longer works. The headset is still showing higher than my speaker in the list. But when it's connected, it won't auto switch to it.

Same thing happens with my Nova Pro Wireless since the last update. I assume it's a bug. For some reason Sonar doesn't detect that the headset is actually "on" even though it is, and connected to the PC, and audio still comes through Sonar when I manually set it to the headset.

Hopefully they'll fix that bug soon because it is incredibly annoying. Also my chat mix dial doesn't work on the base station with Sonar. I have to adjust it with the slider in the app 🙃

Guys, I have a Razer Kraken Kitty Edition and I'm facing the following issue: the microphone doesn't work if I select the (Steel Series Sonar - Microphone), but if I select the headset microphone, it starts working again. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've already uninstalled all Razer drivers, completely removed Synapse, tried adjusting some things in the mixer, but without success. it wouldn't be affected by sonar at all. the mic monitoring would just be the raw output without any noise cancelling or EQ applied. the base station should handle the audio into the headset when connected to the line in on the base station.

Maybe this is an issue thats already been reported here. My sonar mixer sliders all of the sudden do nothing. I have the default devices set correctly, im running as admin, and they are doing nothing. I can move both the personal and stream sliders and the volume stays the same. If i restart the program the audio goes to whatever level i set before the restart. Any ideas? Kinda defeats the purpose of the software if the mixer doesnt work :/

As of now I'm having issues with my audio input for myself. It's either my input mic works for discord and not detecting inside GG or it's detected in GG but my friends can't hear me in discord.

I've spent like 30 minutes trying to troubleshoot it and I haven't found anything that could possibly fix it

try disabling the AI noise cancellation, it was doing weird things on my mic, like the first part of the sentence being quiet then getting loud (proper volume) mid sentence. I figured it was the AI noise cancellation trying to filter out sound so i disabled it and everything's good now.

Battlefield doesn't really work with GG sonar so I had to downgrade for it to work as it should. Sonar on 96 literally won't connect as a headset.. also I had to change the headset on discord from the certified headset to just the arctis nova pro wireless headset for audio so sound any type of decent.

Like it wouldn't register any spatial audio using BF6 and won't even register if I put it on 7.0 7.1 surround or spacial audio so I had to downgrade. Like audio wouldn't even come thru the headset if I had sonar on and all the mixers set properly. My only fix was going to the PC and setting the audio output as arctis nova pro wireless headset. In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

3. If you are having issues with step 2 or step 3 above, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

If you see the "Sonar did not allow this app to change outputs" error, then step 1 above did not work, and you may need to do step 2 or step 3 to route your audio.

Hello, I have an issue with Sonar in the device management section.
Originally, I was able to separate “Headphones 3 – Arctis Pro Wireless Game” and “Arctis Pro Wireless Chat.”
Before a Windows update (I think), I could exclude “Arctis Pro Wireless Chat,” but now both are linked together, as shown in the screenshots. I have the latest version of GG: 97.0.0

it's the volume of the physical device in windows. sonar just works as an inbetween with apps and windows so the volume of the device is still a separate thing that can be changed.

Hey guys, I just replaced my old headset with the WoW 20th anniversary headset and it's comfy and I love it....but this sonar is going to drive me crazy. I set my sound in discord to the headset, and I though sonar was set too. But it keeps having sound go to my speakers. I have tried disabling my speakers and messing with settings and googling it with nothing helping but it is so so frustrating
Discord is weird because people talking in voice is through my headset....but the sound alerts either aren't heard at all or they come through my speakers and again, it's super quiet when it does

You would normally set sonar channels in your apps, and select your audio device for each sonar channel, you can also go to gg settings and disable sonar if you dont care about its features since it aint mandatory

Hello SteelSeries Support Team,

I'm having an issue with SteelSeries GG / Sonar — the microphone section shows a red warning (as shown in the attached screenshot), and the Sonar audio drivers do not install at all.

Here’s what I’ve already tried, but nothing has worked so far:

Completely uninstalled and reinstalled SteelSeries GG multiple times.

Restarted my PC after each installation.

Enabled and disabled Sonar from the settings.

Checked Windows sound settings to make sure the correct input/output devices are selected.

However, the Sonar audio devices (Gaming / Chat / Microphone) never appear in my Windows sound settings, and Sonar continues to show the mic input error.

Please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible — I really need Sonar to work properly.
I’ve attached a screenshot showing the exact problem.

i observed that whatever state i start sonar with (headset on/off) it will just be frozen in that state (on/off) in sonar, no matter how often i turn the headset on/off.
the audio is working fine but i guess sonar falsely detecting if my headset is on/off is what makes the automatic device switch not working anymore. everything was working fine yesterday, i didnt change anything.

I reconfigured Sonar Gaming to my preferences and I am very satisfied with it but the moment I switch to a game with my cursor (or start up a game); there is an incredible change in the sound quality even though the sound device doesn't change.

I can't figure out why it happens. Presets are the same, equalizer doesn't change, output device is still set as Sonar-Gaming. Couldn't find anything on windows sound settings. I would appreciate any type of help really. Getting frustrated here

SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in Sonar. Simply click on your devices in the Mixer and open the Device Manager in Sonar.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same Device Manager menu. Simply drag and drop to set the order of devices.

Anyone have a problem where you make a clip, in steelseries moments if you review it it has Microphone, Destkop and Chat Audio, but then when you watch at it with VLC or Windows built in media viewer the audio of some tracks just disappears?

The player doesn’t automatically play the extra tracks iirc. You can select the track for playback in VLC. You can also hear the extra tracks in editing software like Adobe Premiere

Latest version of sonar occasionally freezes for me for a couple seconds. I'm on 98.0.0

The audio just completely stops for a few seconds. I thought it might be my headset (Arctis Nova pro), but I was watching and when audio cuts out the app just freezes where it was at in terms of levels until audio comes back and then it behaves normally.

I am having a very weird specific issue with sonar where sometimes when i connect my headphones it starts with muffled low volume then when switch the output to a different device then switch it back the low volume and muffled sound stops and its back to normal volume.

So this is going to be long so I apologize. I downloaded Steelseries GG when I bought my Steelseries Artic 7 Wireless headset. I had a wired 7 and I loved it but the wireless one no longer managed the two channel system on its own (Meaning the voice/game chat volume dial) Now I downloaded GG so I could have the ability to spin that dial to turn down the game volume or discord, depending on what is the loudest at the time. Since downloading I've had this issue where the core process SteelSeriesSonar.exe would randomly stop responding. I wasn't sure why this occurred and have been frustrated so I asked here before if anyone has had issues and fixed it as I've seen others online say they had similar problems. I believe at the time there was no idea on why it was doing this and that maybe something I was doing on my end caused it which I sort of chalked up as possible and just since then been dealing with it by restarting the program when it crashes.

Well generally when my night is winding down and I get off discord I will switch the volume control from my headset to my sound system so I don't have to wear headphones and when I get off I generally mute the computer cause if I've left obs running when I get in bed and turn on my switch it will also pop up on OBS and start firing through those speakers as well as my tv. Well tonight laying in bed, with the tv on and switch running hardly having the volume on the game volume just starts blasting the room. I get up walk over to the computer and have this message with only thing running was obs and discord. So I'm sort of at a loss why this keeps occurring because it is so random and doesn't need me to even touch the computer for Sonar to crash. So I decided to come back and see if maybe someone has figured something out or has the missing piece to my problem so this at least happens less than it does now.

I am going to toss in a support ticket, I just from experience generally have better luck with the community than the support at times.

Welp, i think I accidentally found the answer to all of my issues with sonar, and i am almost certain no one ever suggested this.

Normally any device reconnect or anything would cause all of my audio mapping to reset. nothing would ever save, and it would pick random devices for in or out at times.

"Streamer mode" seems to have solved this

Also having this issue. reinstalling didn't help but I did notice if setting device output to a lower percent it seems to be less noticeable. My output was a 75% I dropped it to 50% . This is more of a band-aid fix but better than losing my hearing cause of a bug.

I'm having this same issue since the last update. Swear my speakers sound like they are about to blow when it does this. Reinstalling does not help, running as admin does not help, giving sonar high prio in task manager does not help. I don't know what else to do but uninstalling and trying a different software. For me, the solution was to uninstall SteelSeriesGG and download the older version, 97.1.0. The only problem is that it updates automatically every day, but maybe I've found a way to prevent it from updating automatically.

Voicemeeter is only for the virtual Audio Channels. Equalizer APO has a lot more going on than just an equalizer. It has a 15 or 31 band graphic equalizer, preamp, amplification of single frequencies, of which you can have as many as you want.
High Shelf, Low Shelf Filters, VST Plugin support (although only 32bit) settings per device and so on.
And it´s very low latency.

But it's really not nearly as easy to use as Sonar.

But I must correct myself. Voicemeeter also has a graphic EQ per channel. Quite a good one too.

Same. By default, I have my main speaker volume in windows sound setting in 100% and sonar "Game" around 10-20 highest volume. I've had these settings for years with no problem until the latest update came. If I'm watching a YouTube video and skip or forward the video, audio would fluctuate and boost the volume in a split of a second. It seemed like Sonar couldn't suppress the speaker volume and bugs out. Unlike the previous update. Hopefully they fix it soon.

I’m getting a sudden volume spike for about 1 second whenever I skip forward/back on YouTube, but only when SteelSeries Sonar is active. Using Kefine Dieci AE (CX31993 DAC) via USB-A, and I also tested with HyperX headsets — same issue. Looks like Sonar resets the audio engine or applies some auto-gain when the audio stream changes. i think i found the issue, the vibecoded software doesn't realize the ALIAS PRO device I have plugged in is an Alias Pro.

hey, since the last update im getting a very annoying bug

whenever a audio source that is not showing on the "apps" panel under the mixers starts playing it, it goes to 100% volume before going down to the 10% i set

It's incredibly consistent and annoying since it blows my ears everytime i get a discord notification, play a youtube video, open a new game, etc...

I noticed there is a slight delay before the playing program shows on sonar and during that delay that the audio goes to 100%

Again, this wasn't happening before the update and the lack of customization options gives me 0 clues on how to fix this. Sonar is useful for my daily use but if i cant fix this ill probably have to uninstall it

I was previously using the Azla Azel Edition G2, and it was excellent for hearing footsteps and provided great sound spatial awareness when playing PUBG. I recently purchased the SteelSeries GameBuds, but the sound is much harder to hear, and it feels unnatural. In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

3. If you are having issues with step 2 or step 3 above, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

If you see the "Sonar did not allow this app to change outputs" error, then step 1 above did not work, and you may need to do step 2 or step 3 to route your audio.

In addition to the existing sections—Main, Game, Chat, Media, Aux, and Microphone—it could be useful to add a section called Browser, which would specifically capture or separate what comes from the browser.
This way, it wouldn’t overlap with the other sections and the other software being used at the same time.

I'm trying to set up Steelseries Sonar to work with VRChat, It's important to note that I'm using Virtual Desktop to stream wirelessly between my PC and my Quest 2 headset. I also want to be able to play music from Spotify through my microphone for other VRChat players to hear it. Up until recent Sonar updates, I was able to patch media and aux to separate channels in OBS. So you could send one channel to YT and the other to Twitch. (Or in my case have live audio and different VOD audio.)
But SteelSeries has always insisted on using their stream mix into OBS. Which does not allow you to use the OBS channel patching that I just mentioned. And the most recent Sonar update only allows me to use my
microphone in the "Stream Mix" sent to OBS. - Between not being able to set up my stream audio the way I intend to use it, and the painfully loud audio spikes I can no longer recommend Sonar.

Let me know when there is another update that fixes these issues.

My Arctis Nova 7 has some serious hardware problems.

Yes, I've tried to reset it.

It is just barely 1 year old (reaching it's age on the 27th this month) and has been having some - at first easy to ignore - problems. Namely, the audio drivers themselves. For some reason unknown to me (but hopefully to Steelseries Support - I opened a ticket) the headset sometimes increases it's volume by an unknown percentage each and every time. Strangely, however, it is not editting it's own equalizer, and I am not touching the Sonar software itself. It just... does this by itself.

I know this, because when I watch YouTube, pause for a moment, close the window, read something perhaps and then watch YouTube again later, the volume will be up to 50% louder than it was before without me having touched the volume. It is noticeable even more when I power the headset off, to then power it back on again. During it's powering-off beep, I can hear that it's peaking over it's normal limits and the beep sounds almost distorted. It also hurts my ears if I am too lazy to take them off to reset the power.

Right now, it seems to default to a +50% volume, so I am 100% it's hardware is... f'ed.

I have, repeatedly, gone through some steps that end up in me pressing the pinhole reset button - but it seems to be refusing to reset itself.
