Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in GG. You can find it under Settings > Sonar > Backup Device Switch.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same options menu. Simply scroll down to see the full list of devices.

All of this is edited from before because now I know the exact cause.

Spotify is keeping Sonar active despite not showing in the routed apps. Even though the music is paused, it's keeping Sonar active, which is keeping the default driver active, which is preventing the PC from going to sleep on its own. There is no permanent fix on the Sonar side of things, only restarting Sonar. After I close Spotify, the system driver in powercfg /requests immediately goes away. Only one other app has been occasionally problematic, and that's Medal.

I should note that Spotify doesn't always disappear from the routed apps. Most of the time, after a while of just sitting there though, it will disappear yet keep Sonar active.

Many SteelSeries headsets come with Sidetone, which allow you to hear yourself through the headset’s mic for better clarity when talking.

For most headsets, the volume of the Sidetone can be lowered in SteelSeries Engine, which is part of GG. GG can be downloaded here: https://steelseries.com/gg

This program is actually getting unbearable to use. I dont know of any other audio mixer that, when I plug in my second monitor, it changes specifically one of my headset channels to output through my speakers. Why is sonar still such an absolute pain to use?

In Sonar, choose a profile, enable Spatial Audio if it isn’t, then to the right you can toggle between the two modes.

Hey, is there a way to lock certain apps into the different audio profiles? I poked around in the settings and didn't see it. It would be really nice for discord to always be in the chat profile, and something like firefox to be in the media profile without having to open up GG and place things in the right profile after opening them.

Heyo, short question. I have Sonar on two devices, but while on one the CPU usage from Sonar is basically 0%, on the other PC its constantly going up and down, taking away around 10% CPU performance and up to 15%, when it takes up more than my rather heavily loaded OBS.
Settings are the same, Moments is killed, my 2nd PC even has less EQs and stuff running.
So... whats that?

Here's a question/concern, I just purchased and then promptly returned the Nova Pro Wireless headset. I had the Arctis Pro Wireless for years, it worked great, never had an issue until just the other day the right ear peice just decided to stop working. Long story short, I contacted support was told "sorry we can't do anything.. here's a discount for a new headset (which didn't work and the site told me it was "invalid"). I tried to contact support again but got a message that they can't receive me message for "reasons". Anyway, so I get the Nove Pro Wireless because I assumed it would be as good as the Arctis Pro Wireless.... boy was I wrong. I plug it in and there are more pops and clicks coming from this headset than popcorn in a microwave. With the Arctis the only software that was really needed was the Engine, that was it. The headset connected and worked out of the box. I find that the Nova, for some reason only God and the engineers at Steelseries know, the "Sonar" app is required to adjust anything about the sound. Now Windows has a perfectly good built in volume control for sound devices but the Nova immediately pegged my Windows volume to 100% and would not let me lower it at all. I could turn the volume on the Nova but the Windows volume always stayed at 100%. I installed the stupid and backwards "Sonar" software... and that proceeded to install "virtual sound devices" for every single sound device on my computer. Seriously? Why? Its like "Hey, we know you have real sound devices and real working sound hardware on your computer... but we deiced we needed to emulate all of it with virtual versions of it so that our Sonar BS software can control and ruin all of it." What is going on with this?

i've said this a few times but:

Any SteelSeries headset should sound 100% "fine" out of the box. Obviously everyone has different preferences on sound profiles and their optimal sound (some people like more bass, some people like a flatter sound, etc) but overall the headset should be totally usable on the first plugin. Engine/Sonar is there to help tweak the sound to get it exactly the way you want it, but is never flat out required for good audio.

If you plug in a headset and it's having issues like hissing, popping, supremely awful quality, etc... that's either some hardware issue, or some 3rd party software is doing it, so you should troubleshoot that first before even touching GG settings. Trying to layer on Engine/Sonar settings on a headset that's having issues won't fix the issues and will probably just lead to misguided frustration.

Question for y'all. I have a Apex Pro keyboard, and Arctis Nova pro wired with the gamedac. I have a mini run of the mill Bose speaker connected to the Line Out feature on the game dac and the application (opera for youtube) set to the Aux output on sonar. However, when I use the wheel on the top right of my keyboard to lower the volume, it seems to only lower the volume of the headset and not the speaker. Can I change the scroll wheel to target the Aux out audio line?

When I lower the Master audio volume it lower the entire system and the speaker. However, when I use the wheel the master volume lowers but it doesnt effect anything but the headset

This is because there's no Master volume device in Windows. When you use the volume wheel, the keyboard sends some generic volume up/volume down commands to Windows. From there, Windows will take those commands and change the volume of the main device in Windows. However, when Sonar is active, the Game device is the main output, so it'll only affect that device.

The only way around it is to use the keybindings in Sonar to change the volume. Unfortunately the Apex Pro doesn't support rebinding the volume wheel, but you can either bind the hotkeys to another key (like something on the meta layer) or you can use another program to intercept the volume commands and turn them into keypresses (I use Windows PowerToys for this)

This has been happening for about 4 days. Whenever my headphones get disconnected, this error happens. I used to fix this by restarting the GG but now the same solution does not work.

It also sometimes happens whenever I quit an online game.

"Backup device switch" setting used to cause this exact issue only when my headphones were disconnected. But the said setting is off.

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

I everybodi (sorry for bad english) i have a problem with discord only, if i choose on audio the "Gaming" profile, i can´t ear nothing, but if i choose the "chat" profile, the audio it's so bad, the only solution for now it's using the default audio output, before to format my PC, eveything works nice, and now i have that issue

I have a problem with "stereo" because when I have active vocal cleaning via AI, my sound "flips" to the left and right as if it was going from one side to the other. Does anyone know how to fix this? Sonar does not have the option to mix stereo to mono or I'm blind. Hey guys, I have an issue with Sonar automatically switching to the wrong output devices for Gaming, Chat, Media, Aux, basically everyting, as well as switching to the wrong input on Mic.

This happens every time I start my PC. I tried disabling all the unnecessary devices, but I still need more than one for input and output to be enabled, and Sonar basically chooses the wrong one every time, so I have to manually set it to the correct one every time

Nevermind, it was probably a "Backup Device Switch" setting in Sonar, set up with the wrong priority for devices. Hopefully this helps solve this issue

I've ended up doing a windows system restore because I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I really don't like how flat the sound is (my old Asus monitor has more lively speakers). Went trough 3 equalizer guides, but it doesn't come close to my corsair void. Also the super invasive software that takes control over my entire windows sounds management is ridiculous. I feels more like bloatware then a usefull tool to get the most out of a product.

I've just spent wel over an hour trying all the spatial settings. Still super flat or a little less flat, but it sounds like your shooting inside a concrete bunker. Had a heli hover about 50 meter next to me and it the sound is just completly off compared to my Corsair void and my sony MDR headphones (for music, not gaming). With the GG software my monitor sounds actualy good. Like suprisingly good. On the other headsets it's still wrong.

I've also hooked up my home theater set to get a base reference of what the sounds should look like.

hello, I am routing all my audio for streaming and such thru sonar. And have a soundboard set up in stream deck. One file plays fine, but the next file never goes out . no one can hear it. using wav files i can see it triggering the meter in Sonar but the sound is not getting routed. SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in GG. You can find it under Settings > Sonar > Backup Device Switch.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same options menu. Simply scroll down to see the full list of devices.

Good day, I've been using Steelseries GG solely for its sonar capabilities since I'm using PC speakers and it helps to enhance the audio by quite a bit. But theres a catch, the app just crashes randomly at random times for no apparent reason and alongside all the audio devices the app offers so i have to restart the app again. make sure 1. youre not com banned. 2. make sure you clikc the gear icon next to the Master and set your personal to your headset, stream mix to the stream option for sonar and your microphone set to the one you'll be using to communicate. Go into cod and tab back to sonar and route (drag) your mic into the mic section and drag the game over and so on and so forth. change everything in cods audio settings to match what you have routed in sonar.

Sonar is honestly just a really frustrating program to use. Ive used it for about over a year now and it has issues practically daily. Almost every day Ive had to force close it and reopen it then have to wait like 10-15 minutes before Sonar finishes loading the actual audio mixing menu and i get audio through its channels

Like right now all im trying to do is get my capture card audio as usual, yet for whatever reason, despite me not changing a SINGLE thing about my set up, I needed to hard restart sonar because it muted all my channels and started buffering, then after waiting about 10 minutes it finally loads the menu and i can hear through the channels, but now sonar wont let me mute any of the channels, and I can move the volume bars for the channels though it does not affect them, and now for some reason adjusting channel audio ONLY works through windows settings.

This program is such a mess I honestly have no idea why its this messed up

Slightly confuse, I have the Arctics pro nova 5. When I'm not using the headphones, I have my monitors plugged into the aux out.
But neither the volume control in windows, or the volume control on the controller that came with the headphones adjusts the master volume. The only way, and I do mean the ONLY way I can adjust volume is by opening the steelseries app and manually dragging the sliders.

Am I missing something? Surely there's a setting to tell the dial to adjust the master volume meter when the headphones aren't in use

A situation I am running into and maybe someone has had the same problem.

Sonar GG - Fifine Tank 3 & SC3

I purchased the Fifine Tank3 and SC3 combo and set it up.
I listened to my voice via Windows and via Sonar, At times it sounds loud and in others it sounds low.
Any reasons why?

Also, I noticed that on Discord, my audio sounds low. I changed Discord to experimental and then I removed all audio settings from Discord so that the Sonar setting push through, but still same issue.

Also, on Sonar I noticed that Discord shows either a circle with a dot or a Triangle with an exclamation point. How do I fix these?

your problem is not in the discord settings, but in the stabilization of the sound; it stabilizes the silence, trying to make this silence louder, and when you speak sharply, it reduces the volume lower so that it stays at the decibel mark

Hi V, I would suggest that you have Discord in the Chat channel which have better options for speaking! Only issue with that is if you play with friends and die first but wanna spectate it's going to be A$$ 😉 but you can always do a quick switch to one of the other channels that are better suited for game/music/movies etc.

Hello! I'm not sure if this issue was ever resolved for you, but I was having the same issue and it was driving me nuts. If you're using Sonar, see if "Clearcast AI Noice Cancellation" is enabled and turn that off. Fixed the issue for me almost instantly

Yeah I use the microphone very little as I have a dedicated microphone but have heard the few times I used the built in one that it isn't the best. But at the very least I can say that disabling the AI noice thing on the chat channel fixed the weird issue with audio from discord only being in one ear. I would check your media/aux equalizer settings in sonar as well to see if that helps your music sound any better, myself though I have had a pretty good experience otherwise sound quality wise. I hope your experience gets better as well. If you have issues with the inner earcup part pressing into your ear and getting sore, what solved that for me was a pair of wicked cushion replacement pads, I'd give those a shot as they were a life saver for me as well. I'm using the Nova Pro Wireless for Sonar and I like it a Lot 😉 That's the best part that you can individually set the different channels so you have one for gaming one for discord/teams, skype etc. and me personally divided media and aux for music and movies, streams etc. so i don't have go in and switch the configs back and fourth but still do on occasion when I need the extra oompf 😉

And as I mentioned to multiple in here I would use the "Chat" for just that bc it's made for speaking and not all that other fancy configs for shooters if you catch my drift..

this is likely because you're using bluetooth. bluetooth is provided with the headset as a "bonus", but it's not meant to be the main connection method due to the limitations you're describing. the headset comes with a USB-C dongle that uses a different type of wireless connection that supports a lower latency and higher quality connection.

for the system itself, sonar should automatically take care of it, but if it doesn't, the main output should be " sonar gaming" and the main input should be " sonar microphone"

for discord, it should have it's output set to "sonar chat" and it's input on "sonar mic"

also make sure that you have the headset selected on the outputs in sonar (using the dropdown under each game/chat/media device). in fact, i'd probably just turn off bluetooth entirely to make sure you're not accidently connecting to it.

^actually, reading the manual doesn't really explain a clear way to turn BT off on the nova 5, so i'd probably just recommend unpairing it from the PC or turning BT off on your PC temporarily while you test stuff.

Use the Windows key+R keyboard combination to open the Run dialog box. Enter shell:startup to open the Windows 10 startup folder. Right-click in the folder > select New > Shortcut > Browse > New > Finish to add a new startup program. Repeat as desired to launch other apps when you start your computer.

not usually, when moments is ON it's not actively recording unless you have a game open that it detects. if you turn on desktop capture then yes, it'll record everything, but you have to manually turn on desktop capture so you should know when it's recording or not.

Ah, ok, I found a new screen in windows 11 that shows it. As you can see, the volume bar is filled in past the circle. It's showing my audio level and fluctuates

So when I test it in windows, I can see both the windows volume bar for the device, and the sonar one moving, but hear nothing. I've also just unplugged the headset from the DAC and plugged it into the computer directly and I can hear sound using that device in sonar

I hope that SOMEONE can help me solve this problem. I'm trying to setup Sonar GG for recording in OBS. My desktop/game audio works perfectly fine, however the issue lies with discord. When I set OBS to record, it will only either record my discord output (friends talking or bot playing music) or my voice from my microphone, but never both simultaneously. Does anyone have a fix for this? All settings for input and output are in their respective channels in Sonar. I'm thinking this has something to do with the Sonar program?

1. make sure that you have both game and chat set up for recording in the settings
2. make sure in the advanced audio settings that both the game/chat are being recorded to track 1

you can actually just click on the nodes on the sonar graph and type in the numbers from engine. so for example, you can take the first slider, type in 64hz, and then set the gain to whatever the slider is at. just keep the Q factor at the default and it should be really close.

i would leave the bass/voice/treble sliders at 0 until you've finished transferring it over

well, the other issue is that you have DTS surround sound on. every virtual surround sound like DTS and Sonar has a slightly different effect on the soundscape, since each one makes different assumptions and tweaks for the sound. unfortunately you won't get a 1to1 sound change even with sonar's surround sound on, so there will still be some tweaking involved.

if you scroll down to the spatial audio, you should be able to tweak the sliders for distance and immersion. i'd start there to see if it gets close.

if they're reverting then something else is moving them. check the app itself for any output settings.

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

Make sure Sonar is using the correct headset and that the software creating the sound is in the right column.

Click the cogs then select ur headset on every column. You should see ur browser or game in one of the columns the way my Microsoft Edge is showing up in Media for me.
