SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in GG. You can find it under Settings > Sonar > Backup Device Switch.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same options menu. Simply scroll down to see the full list of devices.

Hello looking for some help, i'm playing first decendant and the game is in game in sonar and all setting is fine but when i lower the volume in sonar nothing changes, if i move the app to ex: media i can controll the volume but not in Game or in chat, i restarted sonar the game pc and tried but the only place i can control volume is in the media tab why is that ?

Hi, you can achieve that in a couple ways.. Either go into Sonar settings and go to mic tab under Backup device switch and put the Alias as no:1 pick or exclude HS mic. Next thing is basically the same thing but 2 ways to disable the mic itself! See pic where to do it..

yea I dont know how it isn't a feature yet(?) is it a challenging feature or they just haven't thought about it at all... When I first got my new Nova 3, I copied an eq from a youtuber to the "gaming" tab but it is for daily use/an all-rounder if )I'm using that term correct lol) and now I have to use the sonar:gaming as my output and if I'm playing games with their own eq, I have to either change the profile or endure the sub-par sound experience when let's say I die and alt tab to a yt vid while my team try to revive me or something like that

Like.. there is the duplicate option but it only duplicates to the same tab with no option to choose where ? and share just puts it to the tab its from. So if I share my current eq to a friend and I say "hey this is good for music but its on the gaming tab so you will have to either copy these one by one to another tab or use it at gaming output" my friend would prob. be like why can't I choose where I put the eq on ??

If this is happening on Chat try to check you settings. ClearCast AI is ON by default. This is very good for cleaning voices but if you listen music or other contents that are not voice through Chat you should turn it OFF

double check you have your microphone routed to the MIC channel in sonar, i know i know but check first. if your mic is set as the input in sonar you should go to discord set input and output to default, then go into your pc settings and make sure input is set to the sonar microphone virtual channel. sometimes for me that doesnt work but a work around is to change your audio output to a different audio setting than any of the virtual channels then going into the sonar app and you should have a yellow alert saying to "set sonar as your pc audio default" click it and it will automatically change your settings.

it's actually Discord exposing two different audio streams (usually one is used for listening to chat one to listening to other media). Discord doesn't allow Windows to route audio so in Sonar you'll only be able to visualize those rather than moving them around. If you want to change the channel you'll have to do it in Discord settings

I confirm it's not possible. You can only change game volume. You can bind shortcuts to master volume so that you'll still be able to change volume or mute without opening the interface

By changing it in Discord settings, I'm assuming you mean this? I don't know why, but running discord through sonar makes all discord audio randomly switch between left ear and right ear, which makes it kinda hard to understand people since the volume automatically changes along with this as well

Im having this issue once again after having it about a month ago. i /thought/ it was an issue with my headset software (icue) interfering with sonar/discord. but its definitely just something within sonar now.

any app i try to use the sonar mic with it doesn't work. i record/test my mic on steelseries and it's showing theres sound, but within any other app there is nothing. the only fix that worked llast month was completely reinstalling steelseries every time it happened, until one day it stopped happening. but thats not feasible.

If you add your devices in "engine" you can link profiles for each game and device, and the set profile launches when you start your games. A workaround I use in some situations, haven't found a way to do the same with Sonar yet..

Well, the routing does not work because sometimes I just want to change from using speakers to headphones (for example at night) so in that case it requires me to open GG, which is slow and requires several clicks just to go to sonar and change the output for the device.

I'm starting to think it might just be easier to disable Sonar and just use Windows game overlay to change output device. What a shame there is not similar switcher in the tray icon for Sonar config that there is for Engine configs 😕

I understand what you mean.. I get in the same situation sometimes. We need a Game Profiles function in Sonar! But have you tried to put your devices priority? It was a Beta function last time I used it, but you basicaly set your devices priority order and it switches to the next one in order when you switch your device off.

Yes we do! 😃 What do you mean setting device priority? I have Arctis 9 headset and if I switch them off, it does not change the device to other because the headset is still visible and selected in Sonar.

In GG you press the settings tab down to the left and scrolls down to Sonar, and there you have something called Backup device switch. It switches devices in a order of choice when one is unavailable or shut off. Bellow that setting you can also make shortcuts to switch between devices by key press combinations of your choice

Okay, found it. It does say that it is only available for Arctis Nova Pro Wireless to detect whether its available or not and does not work with my Arctis 9 headset.

I use Arctis Nova 7 and use that feature together with some speakers. Might be that it needs to detect a signal on/off to switch devices? Maybe try the shortcut option then? If you only use 2 devices and they're in the game tab in sonar you could switch device output by using alt+1 and alt+2 for example

I thought the shortcut only works if the Sonar is active but it seems to be global shortcut so that's nice. I also found some app in github which claims to auto switch Sonar profiles based on which game is launched so I think I'll try that also.

When I restart my PC I often have to manually open Sonar to get my audio channels to be correct... sometimes I have to reset them. believe there are two issues here... one related to restarts or windows updates and one related to headset going inactive.

if you use JUST your headphones, you can completely turn off the output switching in the settings and have sonar be fully locked to the headphones

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

there's some older Arctis headsets that have chatmix built into the hardware, and then new Nova headsets just use Sonar for chatmix. so it can get kinda weird if you're using Sonar and an older headset since there's two chatmixes that you need to work around

From my quick reasearch, it seems without 3rd party software there isnt a quick way. But now I just change it in windows on my taskbar and it works. Much faster then to go into sonar and change it there. Thanks for the help!

Hot key seems like a possible fix but just changing it in taskbar is quick and easy enough. Just tested it and works as desired.

both media and AUX are just extra audio devices. they're available so that you can route apps to output to them and not have them be affected by the EQ on Game/Chat.

as an example you can have game have the EQ for whatever game you're playing, but then you can set spotify to output to Media to give it a more music-centric EQ

or set your browser to output to AUX so it's not being affected by game/music EQs

Is anyone able to help me? I just started using Sonar and for some reason I can't hear any audio at all. However I can hear myself speak if I listen to my mic in the Master mixer. I know that sound is coming from my application because when I change to audio to go straight to my headset and the output device set in Sonar is the same headset I'm using. In case anyone is missing audio on the Game channel (but not on other channels) after the GG 66.0 update: try disabling and enabling the Sonar Gaming playback device. That recovered it for me.

Interesting enough, I found out that having the USB Dongle set to Xbox mode and having Xbox Accessories App installed the headset is working like if it was on Xbox, all features in Sonar work as normal but the Volume feels a bit different compared to PC mode. Although is not recognized in Engine section so it is important to set the EQ Flat on the App, this is helpful for me since I move the dongle back and forth to my Xbox and PC and I forget to switch the Mode and helps to not damage the switch I want to get a BT adapter for my PC to not move the dongle that often lol

Do yourself a favor and get an Xbox Wireless Adapter instead of an BT adapter. USB Bluetooth dongles sometimes have occasional distortions and with the Xbox Wireless Adapter you don't suffer from lower audio quality in hands free mode when you want to access your mic.

this is actually more of discord's fault. they recently updated their desktop streaming flow and it caused this bug, it didn't really happen before. the only solution for now is just to only stream the app you want instead of the entire desktop

Recently swapped to wireless ss headset, and hardware and sound wise its 10/10. But issue here is software. Why the f is it hijacking my knob on my keyboard? I wouldn't mind that if there is an option to assign it to master channel. If there is please help! Having it on game channel is frustrating. There was such a problem that registration in the SteelSeries GG application simply flew off, I tried to log in to my account again, but then an error came out that "the password is incorrect". Okay, I entered my account and password, (they are correct!) It won't let you in anyway, even with a new password it won't let you in. I tried to create a new account and got the error "There were problems with the response of the service, try again in a minute or skip it." I tried everything as described, nothing helps.
I started looking for a solution on the Internet, tried everything, and rebooted the application, tried the drivers too and various schemes, nothing helps. Only Windows did not reinstall.

There are 3 possible Scenarios that will cause that error.

Scenario 1: the GG login authentication servers are offline or overloaded or down in some form, in which case. Please wait and try again later. Maybe an hour. Maybe 3. Maybe tomorrow I don't know.

Scenario 2: your ISP or firewall software may be blocking the port or traffic being called when trying to authenticate the login token. Turn off your firewall and try again. Given the Russian language if you are located in Russia you may have to do a VPN due to the restrictions and sanctions imposed on all of Russia due to Putins inhumane war on Ukraine 🇺🇦 🤔

Scenario 3: and the most likely. You have intered your username/email and or password incorrectly or not authenticated the account through the email that was sent after creating the account. Check your email. Go to steelseries.com and try to login there and verify your credentials. If you cannot there then.... again. You forgot something. So click forgot password and follow instructions for resetting to something you'll remember 😉

Sorry for being annoying y’all. I just don’t like it when things ain’t working. Especially on my pc. I tried everything. I recently upgraded my motherboard & CPU. I did a fresh version of windows 11 it’s a stripped down version of Windows 11 (Better for gaming with little to no input latency). I got it done with FPS Hub a legit optimization brand. They tune CDL players & streamers PCs. I updated my audio drivers & Bluetooth drivers as well. I uninstalled it & reinstalled it like 10 times at this point. I followed @hallow nest advice and still nothing. I also contacted support. Just waiting for a response, but you know how companies are. They take forever to reply lol 😂 But I guess it’s GGs man 😔💔

SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in GG. You can find it under Settings > Sonar > Backup Device Switch.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same options menu. Simply scroll down to see the full list of devices.

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

1. The Chat channel is optimized for voice which means you will have a bad experience if you use it for Spotify, even without Clearcast.
2. The Chat channel has Clearcast Noise Cancelation enabled by default which will attempt to treat everything else than voice as background noise that needs to be cancelled out.

Move Spotify to another channel and you should be fine.

Hello everyone, I need help. for some reason I have volume slider set to 1% (the lowest) on the chat, media, and aux submixers but the audio is overwhelmingly loud to the audience in my twitch streams. I have to manually turn down the volume slider even more on OBS so that the viewers get a decent audio experience. How do I fix it so that the volume slider accurately represents what I expect people will hear on stream?

As you can see in both photos i turned down the audio sliders across both Sonar and OBS so that we can get adquate volumes

I don't think you have your audio setup in OBS correctly. You should only have the one "stream" output going to OBS since streamer mode is already combining the outputs for you.

The big thing is that when Streamer mode is active, all the Sonar outputs get locked to 100% volume. So anything you do to bypass the Stream output would just mean you'll run into the same issue with things sounding too loud and needing to lower the volume in OBS.

I personally don't use streamer mode and just leave Sonar in it's regular mode and have all the outputs put in scenes just like yours.

It does mean that I lose out on the audio monitoring, but it simplifies the setup where I can just manage my volumes in OBS's mixer directly and not need a second window open

the volume sliders in streamer mode just affect the volume of the two mixes (personal and stream mix) so when the outputs are added to OBS directly, they'll always be at 100% volume

You were changing the wrong sliders in Sonar to change the volume for OBS if you add them idividually, you changed the stream volume, which you didn't add to OBS

Just bought Arctis Nova Pro Wireless about 3 weeks ago. Using Windows 11, sonar is enabled. Yesterday I heard a beep and my mic stopped working. I checked the mute switch, checked that windows could see it, but no peaks on the indicator in sonar. Rebooting did not fix the issue either. Today, the same, when I check the sonar control panel, its not indicating that the mic is being heard. When I check the windows sound panel, I can see that it is being heard. This is what was happening until I went to take a screenshot for this post and noticed sonar is 'hearing' the mic again... I started having this issue before I plugged the snowball in, and both times this has happened (today and yesterday,) it only started working again AFTER the snowball was plugged in. The snowball is the backup mic when the headset is off, but I did not have this problem for over a week after removing the snowball from the setup (not plugged in ). Any ideas? I know there's a "quirk" of the sonar UI that the mic's volume meter doesn't work unless the mic is active in another program. that doesn't mean the mic isn't working, it just isn't showing up.

if you have a steelseries keyboard you can bind the keys on the meta layer to a keypress, then use that keypress as a shortcut in sonar. for example you could bind volume up and volume down to F13 and F14, which are keys that windows recognizes but no keyboard physically has so you can safely use them.

i would sugegst going to the mic tab in sober, select the preset above equalizer (Make sure equilizer is turned on) then select the preset "deep voice" if you want it deeper then click the 3 dots next to magnefying glass and choose duplicate. then you can you the deep voice preset as a basis and move around or add points in the equilizer to achieve the depth or sound you want. (TIP: click the headset above mic mix in ("Mixer") Tab to add mic to your personal mix so you can hear in real time the changes you make)) Just make sure to remove from personal mix before streaming or your voice will double in stream and your headphones and make it impossible to talk coherently

go into settings, moments, game detection, select every game you dont want it to clip for to the right of each game there is a 3 star circle symbol. click it then select disable capture. also go to auto-clip setting and turn that off if you dont want to use moments at all. or select each game and uncheck any event you dont want a clip of

not outdated, if you look in windows sound mixer youll see all the sonar steel series virtual input and output devices. those are the ones you want to select per application, ((i.e)(Discord set output to steelseries chat and input to steelseries mic)) that way they appear in the proper mixer in sonar for you to isolate and adjust each app appropriately

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

in GG go to settings, device backup, either turn all off, set your personal channel output to your headphones in the master mixer and your input to your mic, it will no longer change your devices on reboot. Or turn all 3 on and at the bottom order your hierarchy of devices if sometimes you want to listen through a different headset, or speaker or monitor. drag primary most used to top, then next bellow and so on. combine all output channels, then do the same for input if you have multiple you use. and anything you never will use but is a virtual or OS Driver audio from your pc, click it and click the right arrow in the middle of the 2 boxes to add it to the excluded list so sonar never even looks at it. (DO NOT EXCLUDE ANY STEELSERIES VIRTUAL DRIVERS if for some reason they show up in the lists)

if you dont stream however you only need to pay attention to the activation of streamer mode and how to add different audios to their respective channels and how to enable all used channels that you would want in your clip to the Streamer Channel.
Then in GeForce clip settings have its output audio device set to Steelseries Streamer, and your input device set to Steelseries Mic.

thats what is supposed to happen, thats how sonar is able to work. if you have sonar set up correctly. again watch my video. heres my defualts. i still hear every audio from any app i use, from my system, because with sonar open you it takes every audio and routes through the individual sonar channel then outputs to your headset. because sonar looks for all inputs to first come to gaming channel as default, then you can drag and drop or go into apps like discord and set the inputs and outputs to specifically use the chat cannel and sonar mic mixes so you get the eq modifiers and filters and everything sonar offers. then you select in sonar to have the master channel output your personal channel to your headphones and use your headset or freestanding mic as the input to go through the mic channel. if you change windows sound settings to not use sonar gaming and sonar mic then anything you thing youre adjusting or changing or using sonar for, well youre not. as soon as you change windows sound source and open sonar, youll even see sonar telling you that you need to let is change your audio defaults to work properly.

Ive found setting the default device in windows to whatever your output headset is. Lets you control the volume across all the mix channels. But it doesnt change the built in sonar master volume

it would mess with how things get routed. some apps are just routed to the "default" device in windows, which is usually Game. but if you're manually switching the default device to the direct headset, anything routed to default will bypass sonar.

it'll retain anything not set to default, like those set to chat/media/aux, or anything thats manually set to Game, but there's still a risk that some things would bypass it

if you have another microphone, setting discord to only output (AND NOT INPUT) to your headset, your connection will stay in the "Normal" mode (good sounding)... if your headset is both the mic and output it goes in to "hands free" mode (tin can sounding)

Same issue I've got. Except some apps have a little exclamation mark saying "this app may not be routing correctly"... and that's exactly the case. There's no other way around it other than to turn off the softare and just use direct plug and play.

yeah, i suspect more of windows taking a temp control of that apps audio for a system tone or check that drags it out of sonars channel for a sec then sonar doesnt update to renew the token for the app because it already got it when the app opened so if its gone it asssumes the app closed and will get pushed a new token on the next startup of the application.

hi, I just bought an Apex 5 and the Arctis Nova 3 headphones and I activated SSGG and Sonar, and I am having an issue with the volume control

The Sonar app insists on me setting my main PC channel to Gaming, so through my keyboard when I use the scroller to set the audio it only affects games but I want it to effect everything

like if I am hearing music and I want to lower it or make it higher I want to control that too

but I dont want to lose anything that Sonar has to offer

Sonar is using Game as Windows default in order to capture your game sound (nearly any game play sound in the Windows default device). This feedback is under our radar though. Meanwhile I suggest you to setup Master volume shortcuts that could be a nice workaround.

If Sonar routing fails or it shows an error this means that the app you are trying to route doesn't allow routing. In this case the only way to route it is going in the app settings and change it there.

No voice chat, 60 fps cap on gameplay and 30 on cutscenes,input lag and can't even change lobbies without the game giving some sort of error, kicking you to main menu only for you to get in to the same damn lobby

and they stop making updates midway thru the year because they already have so much profit from recycling the game with the new seasons roster and people spending hundreds of dollars just to get 1 build to max overall
