Ultraman the original 1966 series rewatched. God DAMN I fell in love all over again. Ultraman is the second in the Ultra series, a MASSIVE Japanese superhero franchise that continues to be popular to this day, often compared to Superman and Doctor Who in fame, and helped pave the way for Kamen Rider and Super Sentai (and Power Rangers). Produced by the special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, Ultraman tells the story of the Science Patrol, a group specializing in researching and resolving strange creatures and happenings. Usually giant monsters. When they are in trouble, they are aided by a mysterious giant named Ultraman, who is secretly Shin Hayata, one of their own who gained the ability to be Ultraman after an alien accidentally killed him and brought him back to life.

Strictly formula but a ton of fun to watch, and sometimes the Science Patrol managed to solve the problem. In fact, they have the highest kill count compared to other Ultraman supporting cast (lol Blazar’s Earth Garon). Ide the inventor stole the show with his comedy and heart, and I love the Captain, dude was perfect for the role. Hotheaded marksman Arashi I was ok with until his spotlight episode that showed his vulnerability. Hayata the MC and second in command is a pretty characterless good guy but later on he cheats in a lottery so he gets to escort a pretty lady LMAO! Fuji the communications officer (of course) actually gets to go to the field pretty often so she’s not just there to look pretty. Her Pearl obsession was funny. Hoshino… is the kid. Funnily enough after his godawful spotlight ep very early on, he was tolerable. Shame the actor broke his leg and couldn’t be there to the end.

1. Zetton the Space Dinosaur. Cool robot bug and famed as the first one to kill an Ultraman. His odd moniker is because Zetton was not originally the final enemy. No, that was supposed to be Saigo the Sand Abyss Monster, producers switched the two since Zetton looked cooler. Zetton’s design inspired Wild Arms’s Ragu O Ragula’s redesign! His name came from Z (Zeto) and N being the final letters in English and Japanese respectively.

2. Alien Baltan the Space Ninja. Superman has Lex Luthor, Doctor Who has the Daleks, and Ultraman has the Alien Baltans. Not the strongest foe but they’re persistent, constantly targeting the earth. The Baltans are tricky enemies using illusions, barriers, and deceit as they try to take down an enemy far stronger than they are. Plus that condescending laugh they have.

3. Gomora the Ancient Monster (or as the fans call it, the Monster Prince). Gomora was the first to outright defeat Ultraman in a one sided battle. Cool dinosaur design too. Sad thing is he wouldn’t have gone on a rampage if humans didn’t tranq him and kidnapped him to civilization. Fortunately in a future series he comes back and stars as a hero… or so I’ve heard.

4. Dada the Three Faced Phantom. Creepy demeanor and a stark surreal design, the Dada are very memorable. Hilariously they’re kind of a pushover as Ultraman delivered a beat down while no selling all their fabulous gimmicks lol. The Serpos of Dandadadan are based off the Dada.

5. Alien Mefilas the Malicious Alien. He disdains fighting yet still wants to conquer the earth, preferring to have others do his bidding as well as coercing and blackmailing. In a fight he’s no slouch and fights Ultraman to a stand still. Then he leaves because even if he wins the earth would be destroyed from their fight. But he warns Ultraman that he’ll be back. Unfortunately the rematch never happened, but man what a great manipulative enemy. Great devil design too.

Caught up with Doctor’s Rebirth, a Reincarnation Mages about a doctor who was killed and becomes a minor character in a Murim (Eastern Martial Arts Fantasy) novel and uses his future knowledge and medical knowhow to survive. It’s ok, pleasing to the eyes art and story is serviceable without any irritating factors that make annoyed. Two things though:

1. It’s not just here, but these reincarnation work keep having super negotiations powers that really should have them have a better life in their original one. Just weird.

2. This is my first Murim work (not counting The Gamer which is a whole other can of worms) and… a lot of the conventions are taken for granted and left me scratching my head. Like we’re supposed to know all the different sects? Orthodox, unorthodox, or otherwise. Elixirs and medicine balls are also weird, don’t really understand how they work. So I just went along with it haha.
