A lot of the stink comes for supposed/apparent earlier drafts of D1's story, where at the end of it would be revealed that the Traveler was apparently evil all along. It's a narrative that was further spread by Game Theory (always hated that episode as much as I love Game Theory overall)- And from there it kind of took root in the community.

Many have tried to argue that the Traveler is evil, when literally we have no actual or concrete lore/evidence to point towards that. IE, a common argument is how the Traveler 'abandoned' the Eliksni during the Whirlwind, when in reality she was attempting to lure the WItness away from them. And tbh if she hadn't done what she did, there was a good chance they would have been wiped out completely.

She only works with a faith in your better judgement and provides the freedom to choose to be good, though it is very clear in Ahsa’s recounting of the Witness origin and the Warlords of the Dark Age that people are willing to abuse the gifts she provides, which is where “she is benevolent to a detriment” is coming from.

D2 vanilla: "The Red Legion marched at our walls and cut us off from the source of our power. Disgraced and defeated, our bastion was taken over, but still we stood defiant. Upon regaining our Light at a long abandoned shard of the Traveler, we took the fight back to them where we showed the Cabal why we were chosen by the Traveler. Then, the Traveler awakened, destroying their leader, Dominus Ghaul, for good and allowing us to reclaim what was taken from us. However, this awakening has left ripples that gained the attention of more ancient foes to come."

Curse of Osiris: "The legendary mad warlock, Osiris, sent out a warning of a dark future awaiting us on Mercury. As the Vex converge there, Panoptes, the Infinite Mind, seeks to bring about the simulations of its victory into reality. Thanks to the help of Sagira, Osiris' Ghost, we managed to track down Panoptes and instead made its defeat a reality."

Warmind: "As the ripples of the Traveler's awakening continue to leave their mark, the frozen glaciers of the Hellas Basin on Mars start to thaw, revealing a forgotten Clovis Bray facility that houses the Warmind, Rasputin. Along with that, however, something sinister has also surfaced. A sect of Hive cast away from the rest long ago seek to conquer Mars under the command of Nokris and his patron worm god, Xol, Will of the Thousands. With the might of Rasputin by our side, both Nokris and his god were both defeated and the Warmind stood triumphant."

Forsaken: "What started as a riot in the Prison of Elders turned into a tradgedy as Cayde-6, the famed Hunter Vanguard, was murdered by former Prince of the Reef, Uldren Sov, who escaped with the notorious Scorn Barons. Seeking vengeance, we traveled to the lawless frontier of the Tangled Shore where we hunted down each of the Barons until we finally executed Uldren himself. Little did we know that Uldren's actions were guided by a being the Awoken kept secret and locked away. The last known Ahamkara, Riven, manipulated Riven into opening the way to the Dreaming City in hopes of escaping. Foolishly, we stormed the Keep of Voices where we destroyed her, only to condemn the city to an unending curse."

Black Armory: "In order to fulfill a favor owed to a questionable ally, we assisted Ada-1, the curator of the Black Armory, in restoring the ancient and powerful foundry to its former glory. Along the way, we also uncovered a Fallen syndicate of anarchists who sought the Black Armory forges for their own gain. In the end, their leader, Siviks, Lost to None, lost to the Guardians. With that, we were finally able to retrieve the Obsidian Accelerator and the lost history of the Black Armory bringing the foundry back into humanity's hands."

Joker's Wild: "The Drifter has come to us with a new proposition, Gambit Prime. Much like his original Gambit, but with a twist which prioritized specialized roles and the use of the Haul, a mysterious artifact given to him by the Nine. Over time, we would gradually uncover the mystery of the Nine, their Emissary, and their deals with the meretricious rogue.

Penumbra: "Impressed with our performance aboard his Leviathan, Emperor Calus invites us once more promising riches. Within the Menagerie, we faced brutal Vex and Hive monsters contained within and even destroyed a corrupted experiment known as Gahlran, the Sorrow Bearer. Despite the allure of his promises, we saw through the facade and retained our stance with the Vanguard.

Season of Undying: "After following the signal through the Black Garden, the Sol Divisive were sent into a frenzy and stormed the Moon. The architect of this invasion, the Undying Mind, made numerous copies of itself and hid with the Black Garden making it difficult to destroy. Thanks to our ingenuity, Ikora Rey created a portal that could be anchored onto the Vex gate we encounter during our offensives against them. With this, we drew out the Undying Mind until it and all of its copies were destroyed."

Season of Dawn: "As a result of the Undying Mind's destruction, the timeline on Mercury was shattered. Furthermore, a sisterhood of ambitious Psion flayers discovered a dormant device left behind by Osiris. The Sundial, a machine meant to save the life of someone he cared about, was now being used in an attempt to change the past. Along the way, we would achieve a task thought to be impossible by the Sundial's own creator. Saint-14, the greatest Titan who ever lived, was saved from his own demise. Eventually, three of these sisters were slain by our hand and their hold over the Sundial was put to an end, but the remaining sister, Amtec, survived and seeks vengeance."

Season of the Worthy: "Amtec has sent the massive Almighty on a collision course towards the Last City and our only hope to stop it is Rasputin. However, he can't do it alone. With our aid, we rebuilt his warsat network and armed him with the weapons necessary to reduce the Almighty to smoldering ash."

Season of Arrivals: "The fleet of Pyramid ships has finally arrived and in the process, Rasputin is knocked out trying to stand in their way. Unknown in power or intent, they send us messages only to be interrupted Nokris in the service of Savathun, the Witch Queen. In the meantime, as the Pyramids push on our borders, we are pressured to evacuate our operations on Mars, Mercury, Io, and Titan. After getting rid of Nokris once again and recieving the last message, we are told that power awaits us on Europa. But Before we could investigate, the Traveler started to resonate. when we gathered at the Last City, we watched as the Traveler reformed itself in an act of escalation while the Pyramids stole multiple celestial bodies from the stars leaving a void in their place."

Beyond Light: "While investigating Europa, we encounter Variks who warns us of a Fallen empire led by Eramis, the once-shipstealer, who seeks power from the Pyramids. Now armed with Stasis, a power of the Darkness, Eramis seeks to go to war with humanity and fulfill her dreams of revenge against the Traveler for abandoning her people during their Whirlwind. Left with little choice, we resolved to using the enemy's own tools against them and set out on dismantling the House of Salvation. Upon mastering Stasis, Eramis was broken and was engulfed by her own power, trapping her in a frozen prison. Yet despite this, her remaining council sought to continue her work to claim the secrets of the fabled Deep Stone Crypt for themselves. After narrowly preventing the destruction of Europa's surface and putting down an old foe hopefully for the last time, the crypt was now left open to both friend and foe alike."

Season of the Hunt: "Xivu Arath, the Hive god of War, has made her first move on the Sol System. Seeking to corrupt herself an army, she sent her High Celebrant to erect cryptoliths to spread her influence. In order to stop this rising threat, we teamed up with the now-lightless Osiris and Spider who introduced us to his enforcer, Crow, who was once Uldren Sov now revived as a Guardian with no knowledge of his past life. When the hunt for the Wrathborn ended, we decided that Crow should not be trapped under Spider's thumb, so we conviced him to relinquish Crow to us."

Season of the Chosen: "After the fall of the Cabal homeworld, Caiatl, the Empress of the Cabal empire, has arrived to gather what remains in Sol. In the process, she attempted to coax us into being absorbed into her empire which we refused. Thus, a race was started to prevent this conflict from escalating into another war with the Cabal using the Rites of Proving to defeat her aspiring champions. After one final rite, we forced Caiatl to agree to an armistice laying the groundwork for an alliance."

Y4 part 1

Season of the Splicer: "An endless night has enveloped the Last City. Seeking assistance, Ikora invites the House of Light into the Last City as suggested by Osiris, much to the dismay of many people including Lakshmi-2, leading represenative of the Future War Cult. Armed with the tools of an Eliksni splicer, we delved deep into the Vex network and uncovered the source of the endless night, Quria, a Taken vex mind controlled by Savathun. It wasn't long before we tracked it down and ended its reign of terror. Despite this victory, Lakshmi wasn't satisfied. With the aid pf Osiris, she conspired with the other faction leaders to stage a coup on the Last City and expel the Eliksni from it. What she didn't know was that she was walking into her own doom. She unintentionally unleashed the Vex on us and was killed in the process. Fortunately, we were enough to repel the invasion and with the factions gone, we cemented the House of Light as an ally to humanity."

Season of the Lost: After the Vex's failed attack on the Last City, Osiris ran away to the Dreaming City to meet up with Mara Sov who had finally returned after a long absence. However, when we confronted them, we found out that ever since he lost his Light, Osiris was possessed by Savathun herself. Upon introducing herself to us, Savathun gives us a deal: if we help Mara exorcise her worm, then she will give Osiris back to us. Reluctantly, we agreed to her terms. In order to perform the ritual, we needed to rescue the coven of techeuns scattered by Xivu Arath's forces in the Ascendant Plane. Throughout our journey to complete this task, Savathun continues to sow discord in her wake by revealing to Crow his past life. Once the exorcism of Savathun's worm was complete, she fulfilled her end of the bargain and relinquished Osiris back to us after escaping."

I love the game's lore and story to death but everything is so scattered that like- Unless you're going out of your way to deliberately keep up, it's hard to keep up with it all

The Witch Queen: "Mars has finally reappeared after it was torn from the stars by the Pyramids prompting the Vanguard to send the Hidden to search the clues left behind. Our investigation was interrupted by the Cabal and a ship left by Savathun, enticing us with mystery. Aboard the Lure, we find what was once thought to be impossible, Hive wielding the Light. The mystery continued in Savathun's Throne World where we used a new power of the Darkness known as deepsight to uncover the truth. Thanks to this new power, we discover Savathun's plan and the existence of an entity known as the Witness. However, we unknowingly played right into the Witch Queen's hands by revealing her own past to her. Much to our surprise, it was the Traveler who gave her the Light by allowing a Ghost to revive her after her death following the exorcism of her worm. Shaken, but unrelenting, we continued to use Deepsight to uncover a truth that even Savathun was unaware of. With this, we thwarted Savathun's plans and defeated her. While her Ghost escaped, we secured her body leaving her out of the fold, for now."

Season of the Risen: "The Lucent Brood plot against us, but our new allies, the Cabal Empire, have come to us with a plan to reveal their plans to us. With the aid of potent technology and a powerful psion envoy, we would capture Lucent Hive leaders by severing them from their Light through the mindscape. Then we would scour their minds for whatever information they had. Eventually, we discovered that their plans converged on the Moon where they planned on taking over the Scarlet Keep. As we succeeded in dismantling the Lucent Brood's schemes, Crow, acting out of good intentions, accidentally killed the psion envoy sent to us. In order to protect him from the consequences, Saladin gave himself up to the empress. Caiatl accepted Saldin's offer and forced him to serve as part of her war council. For now, our alliance with the Cabal is intact."

Y5 part 1

Season of the Haunted: "Calus has returned, seeking to link the Leviathan with the Lunar Pyramid. In order to sever the connection he attempts to form, Eris Morn uses the Crown of Sorrow, a Hive artifact once in Calus' possession, to link us to the Nightmares that manifest aboard the Leviathan. By our side, Zavala, Crow, and Caiatl are faced by their inner turmoil. Though the path was tough, they walked through it resolute. Though Calus was able to form the link momentarily, we were able to force him back in the end."

Season of Plunder: "Unfrozen by the Witness, Eramis was sent out to retrieve ancient relics of primordial Darkness scattered throughout Sol. With the Old Crews at her call, Eramis worked to gather the relics, but we had a ship and crew of our own to challenge her. One by one, we would reclaim the relics which were revealed to be pieces of the corpse of Nezarec, a disciple of the Witness. Mithrax would then use his expertise to distill the primordial Darkness within the relics into a tea which Saint-14 used to wake Osiris up from the coma he was left in when Savathun gave him back to us."

Season of the Seraph: "Ana Bray seeks to rebuild Rasputin after his defeat by the Witness. In order to achieve this, we are sent into areas taken over by Xivu Arath's forces to retrieve fragments of subminds, AI created from portions of Rasputin's own mind. We are also sent to an orbital station above Earth to create a backdoor so Rasputin could take back control over the warsat network when he is restored. While we would succeed in this, we are left in a dilemma. Using the warsat network only strengthens Xivu and will allow her to summon a fleet above our heads while not using it will allow other to use it against us. Rasputin himself was haunted by this dilemma until he saw the answer when Eramis attempted to use the warsats against the Traveler. In an act of sacrifce, Rasputin destroyed himself along with the warsats, saving us and the Traveler."

Lightfall: "The Witness has arrived and has caught the Traveler in a stranglehold. While it is busy holding the Traveler down, it sends Calus, its newest disciple to Neptune to find the Veil, an artifact it needs to enact the Final Shape. We chase Calus to Neomuna, a hidden human city untouched by the Collapse where we meet the Cloud Striders, augmented defenders with a shortened lifespan. It is also there where we discover a new power originating from the Darkness, Strand. Following the path of a Cloud Strider, we learn how to properly wield this new power to challenge Calus. After numerous battles against his Shadow Legion, we face Calus for the last time beneath the Veil in an attempt to prevent him from forming a link between it and the Traveler. Though we manage to defeat Calus, the Witness takes control over our Ghost to create the link. The Witness then creates a portal to an unspecified location and goes into it making sure it can;t be followed."

Season of Defiance: "While we were busy contending with Calus, the Shadow Legion attacked various settlements outside of the Last City taking many people as prisoners. Stepping in, Mara Sov offered her power to us so we can infiltrate the Shadow Legion prisons and rescue the prisoners. During our mission to free them, tragedy would strike as Amanda Holliday, famed pilot and friend of ours, would perish during a routine rescue mission that turned out to be a trap. Yet, we still stand unbroken. With a vengeful spirit, we took the fight to the Shadow Legion and destroyed their main prison ship. That was the day the enemies of humanity were reminded of our fury."

Y6 part 1

Season of the Deep: "Once again, another destination taken by the Witness has returned, Titan. When we arrived there, we discovered that Deputy Commander Sloane had survived after all this time. Not only that, but she had also formed a bond with an massive creature known as Asha. With this bond, Ahsa could speak through Sloane and reveal to us secrets that could help us defeat the Witness. However, their bond needed to be powered by egregore coral which could only be found deep beneath the surface of Titan's methane ocean. Fighting against the forces of Xivu Arath once more, we would discover the Witness's origins and how to follow the Witness through the portal it created on the Traveler, which required the Witch Queen, one of our greatest enemies."

Season of the Witch: "With the knowledge given to us by Ahsa, we reached out to Savathun's Ghost, Immaru, so that he would ressurect Savathun. However, he would not do so unlesss we were to fulfill a bargain Savathun had prepared in advance. If we were to get rid of Xivu Arath, then Immaru would revive Savathun and she would tell us how to reach the Witness. To achieve this, Eris Morn stepped in and anointed herself as a new Hive God, the Hive God of Vengeance. To assist us, Savathun's spire and oubliette were opened to us so we can tithe power to Eris Morn so she can be strong enough to challenge Xivu Arath. As tension rised, it became clear that at the rate we were going, Eris would not get the strength needed, but she had a plan. After we defeated Xivu Arath's champion, Eris coaxed Immaru into resurrecting Savathun early so that she could kill her and claim the boon of power stored within. At that point, Eris was the strongest Hive there was, and she chose to cast off her power in a single exertion which saw Xivu Arath banished from her own Throne World. With our end fulfilled, Savathun told us that the way forward would be revealed to us soon. Sure enough, we would find the way forward through an egg and a wish."

Season of the Wish: "Now that the way to the Witness is clear, Mara Sov summons the spirt of the previously defeated Riven so that she can enact the final wish which was meant to get us through the portal. However, Riven refused to grant it unless we retrieved her secret clutch of eggs that were scattered by an unknown party. As it turns out, the eggs were scattered by Riven mate, who granted his own wish at the cost of his existence in order to keep them protected. We also found out that the last wish can only send 1 person through the portal. Due to Crow's connection with his sister, he was chosen as the one we send so that Mara can use this connection to track him and guide us through. Finally, we would recover the final egg from Riven's clutch and watch as Riven grants her final wish before fading away for good. Crow then departs through the portal to follow the Witness and lead us to it."

Into the Light: "While we wait for Crow to lead us to the Witness, its forces attack the Last City in an attempt to hold us down. To combat this, Shaxx sends us to contested zones with the Advanced Defense Unit to stand our ground. He also reissued various previously banned weapons to help us in pushing back our enemies. Be Brave Guardian."
