Bungie removed Chris Barrett from the position of Marathon's game director in favor of Joe Ziegler, former game director of Valorant. Under his leadership, Marathon is shifting to a hero focused setup instead of customizable characters.

A source internally at Bungie says something "doesn't add up" and that unless The Final Shape sells immensely well, allowing some shifting of staff, layoffs will likely follow its release.

Matter has been cancelled as was another project internally at Bungie. Project Gummy Bears is also on hold.

There is an expectation that much of Bungie's current senior leadership is waiting out on payments from the Sony acquisition that will end in summer 2026 to then jump ship.

Since the layoffs, Sony has continued to be hands off with Bungie.

It's clear internally that The Final Shape needs to do extremely well.
