if your new character is 10 power and you have a 400 power character, you can do anything on the 10 power character to get 400 power drops and catch up relatively quickly

hello! just got into destiny 2, did a guardian rises questline and started the edge of fate campaign on legendary. it took me half an hour to kill vessels of archon in the first mission. is this a sign that I should lower the difficulty? or does it get easier with better gear?

As a newer player, I'd mainly focus on three things:

1. Leveling up your Power from 10 to 200. This will help you access all sorts of activities in the game
2. Unlocking as many subclasses as you have access to. The originally three (Arc, Solar, and Void) can be unlocked via Ikora at the Tower, and Stasis can be unlocked by completing the Beyond Light campaign. Strand and Prismatic require you to purchase DLCs to access, but I'd say that's worthwhile if you're enjoying the game.
3. Unlocking as many Exotic weapons and armor that seem interesting or exciting. While there are several Exotics you can earn quickly as a new player from the tutorial quests, the others require some additional steps to unlock. Some can be unlocked just for opening Exotic Engrams at Rahool, who will also let you obtain specific armor pieces if you have the right currency. Weapons can be unlocked at the Monument to Lost Light, a kiosk on a wall near Rahool. And many others require you to do quests, dungeons or raids to unlock.
   Hopefully that provides some initial direction while you continue to explore and discover what parts of the game are enjoyable for you.

Power is like the level of difficulty you can play in activities relative to enemies. Say an enemy is 250 power and you are 220 it'll be a bit difficult compared to if you're 280 and they're 250. Of course bungie likes to always put you at a negative delta.

Gear score I'm assuming you mean the stats on a gear. The stats affect different parts of your kit such as grenade regen and damage. Higher stats just mean you can push your stats to higher levels for more benefits.
