We started our journey as the Artificer with hate in our hearts and rage that anchored our soul to this world. Rico attached to us by some obscure means. They are likely not sentient, but maybe we had some resemblance of someone in the past like us, and that is all they knew. To them we were just a citizen.

Pebbles? I am unsure of his future. He hides his sadness and frustration in his efforts to fix his mistakes. I know he regrets them, he just doesn't have the capacity to grasp that yet. Maybe he one day will fix his mistakes and leave this world behind, maybe one day he will be free.
Maybe his mistake will leave too much a scar and have him die slowly, unable to do anything about it. I can only hope that he too will one day find peace.

Artificer was never going to get her "happy" ending. No matter what she did to climb up, grief will forever hold her to that one instinct. It's been burnt into her soul. She watched her children grow, and she loved them dearly. They were energetic little ones and quite curious, but that was always going to be their downfall. It only took one pearl. She tried to save both of them, one was cornered and killed by the scavengers. She tried her best to preserve what was left. She grabbed her only remaining pup and used all she could, even if it hurt her. The scavengers chased them and knocked them apart. The little one fell into the water and they were unable to surface.
A scar is the only thing that remains, across her face and through her soul.

After meeting the echo in Metropolis she considered their words and well...she tried to heal. She tried to break free of the cycles, or perhaps she just wanted to be free from her grief. From the endless bloodshed and rage, from loneliness. Forcing her way through the Depths under a false mask...dragging her anger with her. It's quite ironic really, the image of Artificer dragging a dead scavenger through the depths to hide her low numerals...the frustration she held when she killed that scavenger...

The tv-heads didn't stop her. The decent was peaceful almost, but not. The void sea wouldn't let Rico follow her down, and there I felt I lost yet another of my children...instead it was me running from them in attempt to be free. I hope he'll be okay.
The swim through the void sea was...interesting. Different from what I've seen elsewhere. The serpent seemed to swim into us far more often, or perhaps the Artificer just wasn't strong enough to swim freely, perhaps it's just coincidence. Upon reaching the bottom the void serpent inspected us, like they have done with many others before them, but this time they weren't going to help them to ascension. Her low karma was never going to fool them, and they left.

There she was, alone.
In a void sea with nothing.
She continued swimming down, unsure and angry, she didn't know what else to do.
But nothing survives the void sea.

Slowly her physical form was ripped off, bit by bit she was disintegrating.
and then...there they were.
two little faces..

It was at that point she accepted it, that they were gone and that she was going to die here too. But she was okay with it, she got to say her last goodbye.
And then the Artificer was gone.

When I reached the Exterior in my own playthrough, I myself thought that I had reached the edge of the whole area I had explored, like it was all one part of the world I was exiting. It made sense with the name, Exterior, but of course, I was still confused what Leg could refer to until I realized the real answer later!
