It’s weird they can call them if they’re not related though? Maybe some form of symbiosis, the vultures come because they can prey on whatever is attacking the grubs?

My headcanon is that adult vultures eat any grubs they find (hence why they are hidden underground most of the time, the eggs get laid there or something), but in times of danger the grubs can summon vultures in hopes of them targeting their attackers
And the reason why grubs are often dead is the strongest one of the batch fights and survives, securing the area's food for itself

Oh and I forgot to say in my comment: you are an excellent visual storyteller, maybe because you’re an artist, maybe because of the art you attached to the work, maybe both, but whatever the case, it is very rare that I read fiction of any kind that is evocative of a visual mood. Like the first two chapters read a blueish-grey color (like a cloudy February morning), and this one is all bright and golden and pretty… it’s very impressive.
