I had that happen to me in Dying Light as well, well, the infected spawning right next to me (just see them appear out of thin air) just beside me.

But I also did have moments where'd they dispawn right in front of me, that only really happened twice when I played online with someone, sometimes it looked like the game lagged and basically removed the infected. One of those times it happened, my attacking animation had also just reset mid lag; I'd be post-sword swing and it would just snap back to Crane causally holding the katana.
