From my experience, the shop can give you orange colored weapons that give the max damage on that type of weapon (ex: pickaxe, machete). It also depends on your legend level

It is a buggy achievement but you can try different things, like you and your friend take turns in hosting. Each of you take a bit of damage before one kills the other. Those are the main two that I find seem to work.

So my working theory is this: What happens to a host is dependant on external factors. You get bitten and you become a viral. Viral are very clearly alive by the way they react. They run, they climb, and dodge swings.

If a viral however stays in the sun for too long and has no fresh peoples to eat they eventually will wither away from brain rot and become an undead biter.

But if they are able to catch and eat a people's and then make it to somewhere dark. With time they will enter a chrysalis phase and emerge as a Volitial.

You're not really specifying what you're playing on, but an higher survivor level let's you find better weapons, you can use blueprints but it depends on the base weapon being used most of the time either way
