On PSN it allows you to reload an old save if you exited the game properly. Have a save with a bunch of items, drop it in multiplayer, have the player pick it up. You leave, come back and download your old save with the items already set on it. So you get the items back, you have the friend in-turn drop the items and you leave upload the save and repeat method until you're maxed out on items.

Then you can give the friend the maxed items whenever they are low.
