Game is free so anyone can afford to play it; in turn increases the player base size which increases the game popularity even more (as some kind of loop effect).
The game gets financed through optional cosmetics for people who can afford them meanwhile people who can't still can play with their friends
Where it goes south is when you add Pay 2 Win, and even worse when said P2W is through some gambling system/loot box system. Just look at the Diablo Immortal disaster or to a lesser extent the genshin disease

I can see the appeal of both honestly. Personally havent played Dota but from the games i played, mix and matching pieces often has a... different? feeling to it. Sometime it can look good but i havent had many where i felt all the pieces created a "whole".
I think there are alot of criticism about league and riot that are very justified but if there's one thing they're good at, its making a silly idea look and feel great.
Theyre great at visual and audio design. Many league skins turn a champion that feels decent into an experience that feels surprisingly different and new simply by changing SFX, VFX and voice lines. Dr. Mundo for example is a hulk-like dude that throws cleavers as his core gameplay. Champion is very simple and kinda boring but they made the base cleavers sound super satisfying. And then you buy Pool Party Mundo and now you throw Banjos at people at it makes a super satisfying and banjo-like sound amazing.
But then some skins are basically nothing more than recolors and go for almost the same price. So i can see why you'd think theyre boring

i think thats a very valid opinion honestly. They do some silly balancing things and when you look into it, it really seems to be because of money though. But i mean, business is business, gotta get that paycheck or else tencent wont be happy.
But when they release a new skin that they expect high sales of (K/DA for example) they buff the champion into oblivion and then the champ has a 20% pick rate and 56% winrate, which is league of legends linguo for alot of ruined games which left a feeling of "So what were my counterplays, actually?"

and you do get rusty in your decision making and macro when you dont play. The ability to quickly plan out and think is something that you quickly get rusty about. You dont lose all of it of course, but its rusts out
then there's the fact that when i came back from 2 years hiatus, there was 7 new champions and they all have whack ass skillsets and playstyle, literally every item is the game got a big rework, 8+ items were removed, almost half the champs got some amount of changes and everything became much more fast paced.
Concepts like vision, lane priority, revealing yourself around the map being a deep concept (which alot of people dont realise), when to do/not do baron or when to split push are knowledges you dont really forget, but you do struggle with implementing your knowledge properly once in game after a long pause.
