I mean, it changed though, I don't think "easy" is exactly part of the equation as much as "you where allowed to"

Like, the ODB stuff made stuff muuuuch easier especially as cars got more complex, but now stuff is moving even more towards magical boxes; electrical cars aren't gonna lock you out from shoddy design issues or mechanical wear as much as some "computer says no" type BS

Oh cars today are definitely moving toward intentionally locking you out of doing repairs/modifications, sure

And the old cars really were simpler and easier to work on

But that's because they were pieces of shit 😄

Their really simple designs were easy to work on but also so unreliable you had to work on them

The newer stuff is more complicated but also more reliable

Most of the complaints I've seen around "ease" where more about accessibility to the stuff needed to get shit done and the parts

If they skipped the intentional blocking of repairability they'd still be a pain to work on compared to something from the 70s but they also last for 200,000 miles with basic maintenance

like, you can get your hands on oil filters and such, those are consumables which are often just standard parts

issue is often sensors and such, which as cars get older the parts often get harder to get, or if you wanna change a sensor or something stupid you have to buy the part that the sensor was attached to

That's a mix of the tech world moving faster than car people are used to and intentionally blocking repairability
