Like, if you know the systems you can "beat" a map in a couple hours if your definition is guaranteeing you'll survive any drought

If your definition is "there isn't any room on this map to do things anymore" then it's a lot more involved 😄

It's kind of a challenge, if you expand too fast you could die or at least have massive set backs

in the beginning you gotta manage your water and food etc, but once you're over that point not much else to do other than increase production and scaling

i like the early game struggles the most in games lol

But yeah, the point of these games isn't to be a constant challenge or whatever, it's to have enough challenge to keep you paying attention while you just grind out terraforming the world and building your perfect city

i worked on some terrain gen for a while, but i never managed to get rivers implemented cuz math

so maybe i'll revisit that when i feel like playing it again

"realistic" river generation doesn't have a simple math equation, you have to do a hydrology simulation

similar to how minecraft does it

Or at least a super bare bones version of it, you can skip the sediment depositing and such and just do a single path of erosion with an override saying "this is going to be a river, deal with it"

MC rivers are more or less "this is a biome boundary, put a river there"

Or superbiomes these days

but then you can run into the issue that a river only covers like a small part of the map

You can kind of do it as a pathfinding problem if you go for the simplest solution

Pick the highest point on the map, pick the lowest point or the ocean or whatever, A* through it weighted with the relative elevation differences between tiles then have the river carve canyons if it has to go from low to high on its route

most only go over hypotheticals and not really how to implement them from what i've found

Most worldgen papers these days are about methods that let you combine procedural generation with hand edits

So you provide high level goals or whatever and it generates something interesting based on that

No one wants to figure out how to efficiently do fully random, they want to figure out how to do open world maps that aren't boring and don't take years to create by letting you mix manual and procgen

Although apparently it's also easy to avoid killing everyone you just don't always know what you're doing will kill everyone when you do it and it's hard to recover?
