So my issue is that I have a stream of data from thousands of devices, and I have to ensure ordering, enrichment, conversion, calibration, quality assurance, and a few other specifics. Some of the operations are "per device", some are cross-cutting, some of it requires managing accumulative state, etc. It's a bit involved. The data is broadcast to various databases and services. Once in a while, a mistake happens, and I have to "change the past" for a particular device. Sometimes all the way back to its epoch. But changes to one device can affect the behavior and state of cross cutting concerns, so the whole thing propagates out into a mess of "we may have to rewind and play back with new state/behavior" to rectify, and then we also have to make changes accordingly downstream.

I feel like this is a problem that other people must have solved before, or maybe the solutions are just awkward because the problem is awkward.

It's often like "CPU usage metrics" and logs and generally stuff that "dies" in the stream after some super loose retention policy, and "well can't you just ignore the problem and let it go away?", but I can't because all the data is important xD

It’s possible to update the proxies even before the version is released because they don’t interact much with game logic and only generally need small parts of the protocol; and the changes the new version brings can usually be assumed from the snapshots (with a bit of luck there are no last-minute changes)
