where when x would have value 1, immediately return exit the method with return value I

it does not accept return there, for that you would need to use the :-switch

is kinda weird that they didn't but kinda makes sense in some ways given that an assignment operation expects an assignment

^, In Rust, for example, the return works, but returns from the whole method. This is a non-issue, since Rust is expression-oriented and so supports returning the trailing expression in a block

but now return just does not work at all and we introduced a useless yield keyword (which couldve been used for generator functions like in JS e.g.)

yield helps differentiate the behaviour from a return keyword, in my opinion that alone doesn't make it useless.

And if they ever decide that they want to introduce a yield similar to yield in JS, they can just use a different word for that

Yes, but temuring gives you an easy way to multi-stage build the JRE and use it in any image you want.
