#

idk i haven't played in a while

magic river
#

I cleared boss 180, apparently

wispy blade
#

yoo

#

but have you done the troll challenge?

magic river
#

It's been a minute, I don't remember

#

I think so though, yeah

#

I know what it is and I know I tried it at least

wispy blade
#

you should have this achievement then

#

it's fucking horrid lmao

limber knotBOT
#

I mean I don't get the RPG "number get bigger" either so 👀

magic river
wispy blade
#

yeah

#

i was considering buying cookie clicker on steam, but ended up not doing that

limber knotBOT
#

only number that matters to me right now is my download speed as I'm fighting with my network setup limiting my gigabit connection :(

#

and I'm unsure if paying 300€ for two routers is actually the right decision lol

wide chasm
#

Cookie Clicker can actually become kind of an active game late game, by trying to optimise building statuses and maximising golden cookies

magic river
#

I've been looking in to getting a proper network setup in my house but I don't want to do 1 Gbit

wide chasm
#

I don't do that, because, it's cookie clicker, but it's there if you want to

magic river
#

I suppose I can just run cat 8 cable and wait for switches to not by $150/port for anything better than gigabit

limber knotBOT
#

well my main issue right now is that I can't run cables without destroying walls that are pretty much new

magic river
#

Not sure if there is a point to cat 8 though instead of running fiber

#

If you only cut holes near studs you can plaster in some patches and no one will ever be able to tell 😛

limber knotBOT
#

lol, cat8 only has 40Gbps? thonk

magic river
#

I think that's how that works, I forgot that part of shop class

#

cat 8 can do 40? I thought it could only do 10

#

40 is probably enough to do it then

limber knotBOT
#

my issue isn't that I need to put cables through walls, my issue is that I need to run a cable through multiple floors in my families house xD

magic river
#

SSDs are faster than 1 gigabit though so if I want to get serious about NAS I want more than that

limber knotBOT
#

a streamer I watch is currently installing 100Gpbs everywhere in his house xD

magic river
#

You can't do PoE with that though, unless standard cables run power wires next to the fiber

#

But 100 gigabit is probably good enough for the next couple decades so at least you wouldn't have to mess with it again

#

We've been stalled at gigabit in consumer electronics for like a decade and it looks like we're maybe going to go to 5 gigabit so we can reuse the same cables (mostly)

limber knotBOT
ashen cliff
#

Aruba.

#

Looks fine tho.

magic river
#

Why does he have an "offline" network that still has connections to his online network?

limber knotBOT
#

as far as I can tell it only has access to the storage stuff

#

he does work in cybersecurity so I would hope he knows what he is doing lol

minor otter
magic river
#

Oh gigabit is even older than I remembered, the powerbook G4 in 2000 had a gigabit port

#

I thought it took a while to get built in to things like that

limber knotBOT
#

doesn't most stuff have 10Gbit now? or is that just on good mainboards?

magic river
#

But I guess servers were already on fiber at that point so all of these copper standards have been for workstations and home use

#

What boards have 10 gigabit?

limber knotBOT
#

apparently not many thonk

ashen cliff
#

ASRack.

limber knotBOT
#

interesting, the ASRockX470 Taichi Ultimate is only 240€ and has 10Gbps

golden gust
#

Pretty sure that it's typical that people just add in a card to the mobo given the various 10gig networking standards out there

magic river
#

gigabit was standardized in 1999 and the first computers were shipping with it in 2000

#

10 gigabit was standardized in 2006, still waiting...

#

10 gigabit over twisted pair was in 2006, over fiber was 2002 and twin-ax was 2004

limber knotBOT
#

mfw 100Gbps switches start at 8k

magic river
#

In 2016 we got a new spec that is 10 gigabit tech but scaled down to fit in cat 5e and cat 6 cables, that's why 2.5 gigabit and 5 gigabit are a thing

ashen cliff
#

Most of the 10Gbps cards integrated onto mobos are usually bad/have issues tho...
So, if someone is doing something that actually requires the cards to do work, they avoid those.

limber knotBOT
#

so apparently there is only one consumer-grade router which kinda does 10Gbps thonk

#

(at least on geizhals so available to me thonk)

magic river
#

There is only one 4 port switch for 5 gigabit that is less than $500 last time I looked

#

All the 10 gigabit ones were starting at like $800

twin lagoon
#

on b550 iirc

golden gust
#

There is just no real consumer grade demand for it, like, you have the hobbiysts and shit who want ultra-fast internal networks for shit, but, getting gigabit to the house is something you're kinda lucky to have available if you do, at least in a good chunk of the UK and the US

limber knotBOT
magic river
#

Even for a kind of average SSD you would need 5 gigabit to keep up

#

If you had SSD caching in your NAS or just only SSDs then you need at least 5 gigabit for it to be worth it

#

HDD NAS can saturate gigabit without too much trouble

#

wifi is faster than ethernet in consumer gear these days

#

Oh wow I wonder if the US market just sucks or if the prices for these things cratered over the last 18 months

#

Looks like the cheapest ones on that list just came out this year so maybe things are finally moving

ashen cliff
#

Like instant.

limber knotBOT
#

yeah the fact that wifi can be faster than ethernet now in an avarage router is pretty insane lol

ashen cliff
#

300Mbs wifi... 100Mbps ethernet port.
kekwhyper

limber knotBOT
#

more like 1.75Gbps wifi, 1Gbps ports ;D

#

(although unfortunately openwrt can't manage more than 750Mps on my routers :S)

magic river
#

Real world wifi 6 is only like 750 megabit though

#

Oh wait that's for mesh routers

limber knotBOT
#

I need to look into how to do my stuff with dd-wrt as they seem to use proprietary drivers for the switches and openwrt does it via the CPU which sucks on mine

magic river
#

For standalone ones you can get like 1.5 gigabit

#

dd-wrt doesn't support qualcomm stuff, iirc

ashen cliff
#

Best I can do was like 650Mbps real world with my Wifi setup.

magic river
#

I can get like 400 I think but it's very inconsistent

#

This is an old house though, even a single wall seems to nearly kill the signal some days

#

I have a cable running along the ceiling to the next room to connect to my router and have a switch at my desk to hook up my docking station, desktop, and PS5

ashen cliff
#

I have 3 APs just because of walls, but nothing can make the transitions seamless... so roaming inside the house is still a pain.

limber knotBOT
#

do you have them on the same mobility domain?

#

(or however that feature is called outside of OpenWRT xD)

ashen cliff
#

I'm using OpenWRT.

#

Legit tried everything, nothing works. kekwhyper

limber knotBOT
#

well a good chunk of devices doesn't support that I guess

ashen cliff
#

Mostly phones. Like I had luck with one of my laptops.

#

And nothing else.

magic river
#

I guess OpenWRT doesn't support 802.11r?

#

Or 802.11s if you're trying to do mesh networking but that won't be as fast

limber knotBOT
#

it does

magic river
#

Huh

#

I've been on commercial networks where that works great

ashen cliff
#

Yeah. Commercial stuff works great.
The stuff I setup at work, works fine.

#

But at home... nope.

#

Can't do it with prosumer gear for some reason.

limber knotBOT
#

have you tested that with stock firmware? might be some openwrt oddity

ashen cliff
#

Can't. kekwhyper

limber knotBOT
magic river
#

Of course 802.11r gets you KRACK and... oh, I guess the newer attack didn't get a fancy name

ashen cliff
#

I got the AP with bricked firmware and the official one requires cloud management with a licence.

#

Aka. ain't paying for that at home.

magic river
#

bluesocket?

limber knotBOT
#

crack it

#

runs

magic river
#

Oh, no, the bluesocket stuff doesn't have 802.11ax yet

#

Also fuck bluesocket

ashen cliff
#

ExtremeNetworks. kekwhyper

limber knotBOT
#

btw what do you mean by ddwrt not supporting Qualcomm? I had it running on Qualcomm routers thonk

magic river
#

For 802.11ax stuff they said if it's qualcomm don't even bother asking

#

Either that or they only support qualcomm now, forget which one it is

limber knotBOT
#

ah, yeah, I only tested on ac

magic river
#

Didn't sound like it was a "this isn't possible right now" thing either, it was a long term "we aren't going to support this" thing

#

Or maybe that was openwrt... I dunno, I only look at this shit at 2am when I should be sleeping 😛

#

xiaomi already puts openwrt-based builds on qualcomm gear so I can't see that being a thing for long

ashen cliff
#

At least MediaKek is supported. kekwhyper

limber knotBOT
#

I think the issue with openwrt and newer stuff is that they re-implement all the drivers and shit if they aren't open

#

dd-wrt includes propritary blobs

#

(or well, openwrt would need to reimplement them and I doubt people want to do that lol)

ashen cliff
#

While I like OpenWRT... sometimes I question some of their decisions when it comes to device support.

#

I have 4 devices that just needed to be added to the device list and would just work... PRs go unaccepted forever.
So you just have to custom build.

magic river
#

None of these routers are fast enough to go full gigabit speed with proper queuing to avoid bufferbloat

#

The hardware acceleration doesn't do it either so you have to use the CPU

#

Although I wonder if you could get away with only using the hardware for LAN and software for WAN...

ashen cliff
#

Usually the WIFI chip already has some kind of hardware acceleration, same goes for the LAN chip.

#

Tho, both of those are usually horribly broken and the world MAKES SURE, you buy REV 0, so you have to suffer.

limber knotBOT
#

pretty sure the router I have (Archer C7) is able to do hardware lan stuff to get full 1Gbps if not used with OpenWRT due to the drivers not being open

#

at least that's what I read somewhere

ashen cliff
#

Maybe? Tho, I remember most TP-Link stuff being "bad" in general when it comes to aftermarket support with great performance.

limber knotBOT
#

yeah I'm starting to notice that in my quest to get my full internet speed :S

ashen cliff
#

Yeah, good luck.

magic river
#

Ah I think OpenWRT is qualcomm only for 802.11ax, that's what it was

#

Because only qualcomm has drivers in the kernel for 802.11ax hardware that supports ap-mode

#

ath11k

#

Do they still have open firmware too?

magic river
#

I think for ath9k they did, not sure about later stuff

#

Huh, mediatek too

limber knotBOT
#

why do they not feature external antennas anymore? :'(

magic river
#

That Belkin RT3200 looks like the way to go right now

#

The UniFi stuff is access point only (although if you don't need wired connections I suppose with openwrt you could make it a standalone router?) and always sold out anyway

limber knotBOT
#

yeah, the Linksys E8450 apparently isn't available in germany

magic river
#

The linksys is the same thing as the belkin, just in a different box

limber knotBOT
#

also I wish they would release more stuff in the original WRT design xD

magic river
#

They're made by the same company and are usually either literally identical or close to it

limber knotBOT
#

TIL

magic river
#

Cisco sold Linksys to Belkin in 2013

#

They're both under Foxconn these days but still just rebadges of the same gear

limber knotBOT
#

also TIL that the FCC publishes internal photos of everything they approve

ashen cliff
#

Yep.

#

Useful to find debug headers without opening the device.

worn ember
#

what cursed things are you doing now

limber knotBOT

apparently I even get 800Mbps transfer speeds when accessing my network storage so maybe there really is a WAN issue with my OpenWRT setup thonk

foggy veldt
#

The fcc won’t let me be

limber knotBOT
#

I wonder if I can set it up to just not run the firewall on WAN but I don't really trust the Vodafone provided one lol

#

I use open source software on my routers, yes

#

but most stock software wouldn't even be able to do what I want (mainly wifi bridging and ad blocking)

warm anchor
#

Yeah I asked coz I do believe there are still a lot of limitations if you are using an isp

limber knotBOT
#

I just use the ISP provided router as a modem and run my own hardware behind it

lean kiln
#

use kotlin if you want to use kotlin

#

otherwise don't

warm anchor
#

If you have to ask, don’t

golden gust
#

I love Kotlin

magic river
#

Kotlin is still much nicer than Java but Java has caught up some since Java 8

warm anchor
#

(Inb4 this starts a fight)

magic river
#

And Java has and is getting some features that aren't in or will be hard to put in Kotlin

lean kiln
#

I like kotlin as well but it's not always "better"

#

it has it's issues

golden gust
#

But, I'd heavily suggest getting more to grips with some of the basics like Collections, etc, before moving towards a language which isn't all that well supported in the community

#

jmp

#

I'll have you know

lean kiln
#

java is generally more stable especially when it comes to writing APIs

golden gust
#

that I implement 90% of the functionality in my plugin in extension functions

magic river
#

For a library (or a plugin?) Kotlin is at a disadvantage

#

There is a Kotlin feature (forgot what it is) that is really nice to have but only works with Java interfaces, not Kotlin ones for some reason

#

And exposing a clean Java API from Kotlin is extra work

golden gust
#

Yea, you can call Kotlin from java just fine, but, things like companion classes get... interesting...

magic river
#

And of course Kotlin is an extra dependency for your library/plugin

golden gust
#

Like, you see how horrible kotlin kinda is deep down, and ^

magic river
#

For an application I'd still use Kotlin

lean kiln
#

kotlin fixed that

lean kiln
#

they added fun interface

#

before you could only do it with java functional interfaces

magic river
#

For plugins or libraries unless they're meant for Kotlin users I'd probably stick to Java, so long as you can use Java 16

golden gust
#

I mean, it is fun to code with, and I find it much easier to do some stuff

#

it's also stupid in other areas and ain't gonna fix your fundemental knowledge gaps

lean kiln
#

it's where you can then instantiate/implement the interface like ```Runnable {
}

golden gust
#

if anything it's gonna strain them further due to how kotlin works

magic river
#

Well, if it was a private plugin I'd still use Kotlin 😛

golden gust
#

huggles Kotlin

#

I actually kinda miss working in it all the time

#

but, I mean, java is getting some nice features and shit, e.g. I've fallen in love with the instanceof thing

magic river
#

I miss Kotlin sequences all the time when I'm working with TypeScript

#

I suppose I could use io-ts or something but they lean heavily on the functional style and terminology, you have to buy in to the whole thing

#

Sequences are a neat thing from functional land that were integrated into procedural land

golden gust
#

Yea, that's my thing with Kotlin is that theres some really fricken nice stuff in there, but, especially with java 16, there is less and less of a "need" to use Kotlin

#

In the language is so weird in some respects

magic river
#

Even sequences are actually an example of that, they're basically streams but with batteries included

#

Except not quite really the same and they don't interoperate

golden gust
#

is literally the worse, but, hey, wanna deal with a collection? col[Any?] ftw!

Repeat for 5 rounds. Then to finish I did a 2 movement 4 round finisher. I am dead. it was just 50 mins of cardio but i am DEAD.
