#

Huh, so UE5 has a software renderer

#

It just runs on your GPU

#

To some extent this has been true since shaders have existed but they seem to only be using the texture units and the shading cores while reimplementing the rest of the GPU

fallen oracle
#

I've been playing with the EA builds, it's pretty cool.

magic river
#

They don't use the ROPs or built in depth testing

#

It's 3x faster than when they tried to implement their rendering using the hardware

#

All because they wanted the ability to render pixel sized triangles efficiently

static badge
#

wat

warm anchor
magic river
#

Virtualized geometry

#

You can drop film quality meshes in to the engine and it'll figure out how to draw 1,000,000 of them at 144 fps

#

Ah, clever, but for big triangles the HW is still faster so they switch between the two on a chunk-by-chunk basis

static badge
#

i see

#

one of these days i need to start dicking around with rendering, i barely understand it

magic river
#

Chunk, cluster, whatever you want to call it

static badge
#

"bunch of shit in some specified area"

magic river
#

a 3D (usually biased to the camera) tile

#

So the chunks are smaller near the camera

#

Although their chunking is even more complicated than that to avoid some issues with cracks in LOD edges

#

oh hehe they still do SW depth test even for big triangles because it made things simpler

static badge
#

i don't understand these rendering terms

magic river
#

Oh they found a use for the hardware depth test after all, they use it to cull unused materials

#

For the texturing and such they draw a full screen quad for each material in the scene but since all of that was handled on the GPU they didn't know what materials were actually visible, would be expensive to have a bunch of draw calls for materials that don't have anything to do

#

They write the material ID in to the depth buffer then when drawing the full screen quad for that material they set the Z to the material ID and if there is nothing to draw the GPU depth testing hardware will quickly skip over it

#

First game to use that technique was actually Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, neat

#

And then of course they add tiling in to the mix to let them quickly skip whole sections of the screen before even attempting a depth test

#

In the end this lets them dump a billion triangles in to a scene and have the engine cull it down to 25 million every frame

#

Their asset format assumes DirectStorage (or the console equivalents)

#

Specifically they assume there will be hardware accelerated decompression they should optimize their format for

potent fossil
#

kind of like the computer making a relief every frame paperUwU

magic river
#

Apparently the demo they made couldn't do 4K, it was ~1400p then upscaled

potent fossil
#

"hey computer take this assload of material and then carve away everything that isn't important so only the good stuff is left"

magic river
#

Not sure if that was on PS5 or some unspecified PC GPU

potent fossil
#

"now do that 60 times a second"

magic river
#

Probably PS5 since I think that was the focus of their demo

static badge
#

jesus

#

i really do need to fiddle around with rendering :)

magic river
#

Their Lumen demo was 25.90GB of raw data, 7.67GB in their in-memory compressed format (optimized for GPU access), and 4.61GB on disk

static badge
#

all i can think about is how many more harddrives i need to buy per game

#

these sizes are actually getting out of control

magic river
#

Nanite can't render translucent things or animated things though

#

Those are all old school renders where you have to count triangles

#

Oh, and it kind of sucks at grass, leaves, hair, etc

#

Lots of tiny simple things next to each other

static badge
#

seems like it might have gone too far in one direction?

magic river
#

Their goal (which pretty much everything except those things I just mentioned reaches) was to have rendering performance scale with output resolution, you don't have to care about mesh complexity or texture size

#

The engine takes care of that stuff for you

#

What part of the last hour of my liveblogging this paper made you think that was for you 😛

static badge
#

the sentence above it

#

pls look at timings

#

#

#

l

#

s

magic river
#

Amusingly they couldn't use ray tracing for shadows (what current RT hardware is supposed to be good for) because the BVH structure you have to build for that takes too much memory when you have this many triangles

#

The RT hardware isn't flexible enough to let you define custom tree layouts

static badge
#

what kind of tree would even work at a billion triangles lol

magic river
#

Oh neat the guy I was going to reference to explain chunks/clusters/etc apparently works at Epic now and did their shadow implementation for UE5

#

I imagine it'd have to be an implicit tree

#

I think that'd technically be a heap?

static badge
#

sounds about right

magic river
#

I mostly understand the rendering techniques to make basically infinite lights run smoothly, this stuff for basically infinite texture and mesh sizes is way beyond me

I know a lot of the words and have a general idea of what they're doing but there is no way I could do anything like it on my own

#

im not sure if this is the place to ask, but im getting an error about an "Unsupported upgrade request" when trying to use java.net.http.HttpRequest, yet when i try to run it through something like mitmproxy to debug, it works just fine and gives the expected response

golden gust
#

having "smart" stuff in the middle often creates debugging headings

#

depends on where exactly you're getting it, screams that you tried to connect to a web socket or something?

dim jungle
#

the webserver seems to be complaining

#

but even when i try putting the log level to trace it gives nothing helpful (this isn't actually at trace, but trace just shows when i connect / disconnect)

golden gust
#

well, what's the web server doing?

dim jungle
#

just returning some json at the moment

golden gust
#

I mean, 2 second google points to "incomplete uvicorn install"?

dim jungle
#

is it meant to set this header for a get?

#

i've tried reinstalling uvicorn, thing is it works if i proxy it, but not through pure java

golden gust
#

if there is no request body you're sending, yes

#

Yes, but proxies do dumb things

#

It's pretty easy for a proxy to hide server impl behavior from you

dim jungle
#

now to hunt for what's setting the header

golden gust
#

Not used the new API but generally looks fine

worn ember
dim jungle
#

thinking_gun the headers don't even seem to be set before send is called

golden gust
#

Well, yea, much of that is sent down the line often

#

the caller generally doesn't care to specify things like the content length when the library can just read it before it writes it

dim jungle
#

yeah, just thought I would be an obvious point to check

golden gust
#

the issue is your server, basically

#

as said, quick google suggests a bad uvicorn or whatever install

#

proxy intercepts the connection and manages it a way that the "upgrade" isn't attempted

#

No idea why it attempts it, not aware of where that is as such, apparently something to do with web sockets but god knows

dim jungle
#

I'm assuming it's the wacky header

limpid comet
#

#

mossy vessel
#

wsl java home

limpid comet
#

here's the big mind boggling question

frank otter
#

archlinux-java I find more usable than JAVA_HOME

limpid comet
#

if i gradle install compile whatever, and say, publish to maven local, is that going to the maven local on my Windows or is it stuck in WSL land

wispy blade
red timber
frank otter
#

does it? doesn't show in shell variables

#

naom send neofetch then

wispy blade
#

frank otter
#

dwm supremacy

#

I have more packages that I have realised

red timber
#

hm, it at least used to do that

#

doesn't seem to set it anymore

#

but it does append it to the PATH

frank otter
#

Is JAVA_HOME just a convention for naming some arbitrary variable to be appended onto PATH?

limpid comet
#

looks like its building on wsl!!!

frank otter
#

Oh interesting, java was the only thing I'd heard of that used _HOME

potent fossil
#

gradle and maven both use it as well

#

gradle_home, mvn_home

nimble depot
#

Would Gearwheel be a good name for software (previous was called Vortex)

potent fossil
#

potent fossil
#

developers naming shit

nimble depot

I don't even remember what ETCE meant but that was a really evil thing. At least it could recompile on the fly

@nimble depot you know about enterprise shit, can you explain why server racks cost way more than they should?

potent fossil
#

at least they have a 301 http->https KEKFlushed

wispy blade
#

no glass doors or smth fancy, just 16U of metal

nimble depot
void void
#

gotta make sure nobody can MiTM those scammed credentials

nimble depot
#

The high end racks are so expensive because they are modular and that takes time to engineer you know. I can disassemble the ones I have without using any tools for example

wispy blade
#

15U Serverkast 19 inch met geperforeerde voordeur, geschikt voor onder de bureaus, (BxDxH) 600x800x769mm, Zwart

#

and that's 400,-

nimble depot
#

you should look at StarTech they got cheap stuff

wispy blade
#

thanks for the tip

nimble depot
#

they are also probably the only company in the world that makes good powered USB hubs you can trust

potent fossil
#

i ordered a startech dock and it came doa, sent it back and got a new one sent. came doa. sent it back for refund, bought pluggable.

wispy blade

Who's gonna put a server rack under their desk

wispy blade
