Go from mars you have to escape it's influence (much harder) but that puts you in orbit around the sun - now you gotta expend more fuel to put you on a trajectory to get back to earth

From the moon that can be solved easily enough in a variety of ways. with mars you either learn how to create rocket fuel on mars (hard to do, very complicated for a very long list of reasons) and trust that the rocket you rode in to get there will work as well for the ride home.

Or you send missions to mars before you that has the fuel for your return trip. That's much easier, but is also squarely in the "hard as fuck" category

moon orbit earth. moon substantially less gravity than earth. escape moon gravity and you immediately are orbiting the earth like the moon is. fairly simple to get back as gravity will help out. relatively easy physically speaking

mars orbit sun. mars has much more substantial gravity than moon does, much harder to escape it. but if you do, you are now orbiting the sun. now you have to figure out how to get back to earth's orbit and then enter it again. much harder

• knowing a programming language
• knowing how to design programs
