The API design in Sponge might cause enough overhead to offset those improvements but based on just the optimizations I would have expected Sponge to be competitive with or beat Paper

I don't know why Sponge needed such a major overhaul for 1.13, the point of the API design was that it was meant to be like where Minecraft is heading (and like how major AAA games work) and just shimming that on top of the less flexible real Minecraft that's underneath
